OUR HISTORY BACK IN 2002, EXPRESS ALES WAS STARTED BY DENNIS & PAM HALL. THINGS HAVE MOVED ON SINCE THEN...

Having spent many years in & around the drinks trade, Dennis noticed that too many businesses in the area suffered a lack of service by larger national wholesale distributors.

Based in a small warehouse unit in Stratford upon Avon & one van, they started offering a limited selection of beers, ciders, wines & spirits to local businesses.

The demand for credible & quality drinks wholesale & distribution services was soon apparent, & the fact they delivered a whole lot more than just ales meant the current name didn’t do them any favours.

So, in 2004, when more of the family & an old friend & colleague, Graham Lawton, joined the team, they decided that a name change

needed to be made. Thus Inn Express was then born!.

Over the coming years & moving closer to the present day, our team has created an innovative, ever-evolving product portfolio to keep our customers engaged with modern-day trends. We operate in a unique style, which is only possible with such a dedicated & long-serving team.

Although having such a long-serving team is a considerable benefit we constantly add to our team to sustain our growth further & ensure we have a diverse group who can share ideas & previous experiences to better the business. We often get asked “what craft beers do you have?” Now, depending on who you speak to, “craft beer” means different things to different people. Which is helpful, huh? We tell our customers that it’s sometimes easier to define the category deciding what The opposite of craft beer is?

The opposite of craft beer is commercial beer. Commercial beer is mass-produced & readily available in most high street pubs & restaurants. Another telling factor is that you won’t find commercial beer on tap if you step inside a craft brewery taproom or independent bottle shop.

Craft beer is a term that has migrated across the pond from the USA & is still very much a hot topic for debate. Craft beer, while increasingly popular everywhere, is somewhat difficult to define. Generally speaking, craft beer is a beer that independent breweries make in small batches. According to the Brewer’s Association, to qualify as a craft brewery, the beer “must come from a brewery that brews

no more than 6 million barrels of beer per year, have under a quarter of the brewery owned or controlled by the alcoholic beverage industry, & has at least half of its volume in all malt beers.”

Micro, macro & nano breweries all produce smaller quantities of beer annually & typically focus more on experimentation & variety.

Established in February 2002, we are now in our 20th year of trading. Over the years the we have evolved with the trends & diversified in to different opportunities as they have presented themselves. The one thing we have always prided ourselves in our selection of cask beer. We offer the best cask beer from around the UK. Whether you venue sells the best of the UK’s biggest brewers or you are after something a bit more crafty we have something just for you.

We offer a weekly rotating cask beer selection from some of the UK’s premier brewers.

Each week we add new beers from national brewers such as Thornbridge, Fullers, Sharps, Wye Valley, Purity, Tiny Rebel, Vocation, & Timothy Taylor.

We also distribute cask beers for smaller brewers such as Brew 61, Church Farm, Black Iris, Clavell & Hind & many more.

We store & deliver our casks directly from our temperature controlled warehouse using our own liveried fleet of vehicles. Our team then deliver them exactly where you need them so they are in tip top condition ready for serving.

1767, Joseph Priestly invents Soda Water & is believed to be a cure for various illnesses because natural, carbonated water contained healing powers. Soft drinks soon outgrew their origins in the medical world & 1845, R Whites Lemonade went on sale in the UK. Early 20th Century sees soda bottle sales increase exponentially in 6 packs & vending machines. This grows again in the second half of the 20thCentury as soft drinks are canned.

Consumption doubles from 1970 – 2000 with more & more flavours introduced & with Sugar levels high, Diet variants are more widely introduced.

To avoid large price increases due to the Sugar tax in 2018, many soft drinks manufacturers reformulated their range to lower sugar levels & avoid the levy. As consumer demands change & the category’s premiumisation continues, many brands are now looking to promote both “All Natural” sweeteners & flavours. Raissa de Haas, the co-founder of Double Dutch Drinks, says the government’s soft drinks industry levy has “definitely set a wave for people to become more health conscious”.

But those two words ‘spirits & liqueurs’ sound so simple when you say them but combined, they include some of the worlds most famous brands & also some of the worlds oldest products.

But what’s the difference?

Noun: the liquid containing ethanol & water that is distilled from an alcoholic liquid or mash — often used in plural

Noun: a usually sweetened alcoholic liquor (such as brandy) flavoured with fruit, spices, nuts, herbs, or seeds

In their most traditional sense are made from grains or other plants, with the main six ‘pure spirits’ being gin, vodka, brandy, tequila, rum & whisky (or whiskey depending on your location), all of which have a high alcohol content of usually over 38% ABV.

Probably the oldest of all high-strength alcoholic beverages, liqueurs were originally the preserve of monks who produced them primarily for medicinal purposes.

Made through distillation using an alcoholic liquid made using a fermentation process; this liquid is then placed in a still where the alcohol is extracted in a relatively high concentrate, resulting in a pure distilled spirit.

The first written record of a liqueur belongs to Kummel in 1575, but many knew that certain religious orders had produced elixirs for centuries before this date.

Regardless of the styles, sub-styles & methods to make it, all you need is hops, water, yeast & a grain of some sort (barley, wheat, rice, etc.) to get your malt from

Choose from the world’s best known brands such as Peroni, Stella, Asahi, Carling & SuperBock, along with renowned brewers worldwide such as Hitachino nest, Vedett, Orval, & the world’s oldest brewery, Weihenstephan. For those who prefer things a little more traditional, we’ve all you can ask for when it comes to bitter & mild, stocking the brands that consumers have come to know & love, such as Timothy Taylor, Purity, Wye Valley & Sharps.

So despite the bewildering array of names given to the final product ultimately, all of them fall into just two styles which are Ale & Lager.

So, makes an ale? With the only discernible difference from Lager being a super eukaryotic, single-celled micro-organisms (yeast to you & us!), It’s understandable why sometimes the lines become very blurred with the terms & names for each style! Ale yeasts do well in the warm & Lager in the cold. Both are fermented & then taken down to a lower temperature to finish off, with Lager being taken colder & left for longer. As a result, Lager is clean, bright & refreshing (usually served cold) & ale, complex, chewy & darker (often served closer to room temperature). Stout also technically falls into the ale category.

HOW DRINKS WHOLESALE SHOULD BE DONE

Our ethos is to explore the potential that the cider apple can offer us. We have unashamedly taken a leaf out of the craft beer brewers’ book by using different yeast strains, (Brettanomyces in Killer Sharp), some wild yeasts, different fermentation techniques, (keeving used in French Revelation), & being selective with the addition of other complementary ingredients (Chinook & Cascade Hops in HipHop, Elderflower in Wild Elder). The result is a very diverse range with highly distinctive characteristics.

We don’t use apple or pear concentrate, nor do we add sugars prior to fermentation. Only using cider apples & perry pears means our drinks are complex & refreshing.
