Rotational Exhibits Park Towne Place Museum District Residences is uniquely situated on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway among the City of Philadelphia’s most cherished art and cultural institutions.

The vision for the community is to fully integrate Park Towne Place into the fabric of the Parkway – providing a unique art experience for residents and visitors alike.

In addition to the permanent art collection on display, rotational exhibits like The Shape of Tomorrow showcase both established and up-and-coming artists. Each exhibit includes companion educational and social opportunities to visit with artists who host talks and provide insights on their original works.

The Shape of Tomorrow highlights the work of five artists, all of whom’s work utilizes color and form to offer the viewer a chance to escape into abstract other-worlds. Throughout the galleries, the work of Charles Emlen, Greg Kelly, Tremain Smith, Larry Spaid, and John Howell White take unabashed joy in their included forms and color pallets to provoke the visual senses of the viewers.

This moment in time within our culture is one that is begging for escapism, a chance to revel in shape, color, layer, texture, line, and form — and to fill that need, The Shape of Tomorrow delivers. Tremain Smith builds up the surfaces of her works on panel. By utilizing the ancient technique of encaustic — pigment mixed into wax — Smith’s layers become semiopaque and create a visual challenge to the viewer. Perhaps if one concentrates on the small moments in her works, they will get lost in the complex and quiet little worlds that Smith’s work inhabits. John Howell White, likewise, layers his monumental unstretched canvases with paint, allowing carefully structured forms and freely dripping brush strokes to clash and create surfaces that pull you in with their depth and layers of color.

While some artists in The Shape of Tomorrow utilize complex layering in their work, others are slightly more reserved in their work. Greg Kelly minimizes his color pallet, utilizing stripes of alternating colors to create dizzying surfaces that seem to undulate and take on a life and movement of their own. Larry Spaid’s compositions are much more rigid, not unlike the giants of modern design. But in Spaid’s quiet restraint is the compelling beauty found in the mastery of his understanding of composition. Charles Emlen’s sculptures often adhere to a monochromatic pallet of repetitious shapes; in these constraints, the gestalt shines. Together, all five artists celebrate the empowering and uplifting nature that color and shape can bring to our lives.

Charles Emlen Charles Emlen was born and raised in Paoli, PA. He received his BFA in sculpture from Pennsylvania State University in 1981, and his MFA in sculpture from Arizona State University (ASU) in 1984. After leaving ASU he worked for several years as a sculptor’s assistant with Arizona artist Michael Anderson.

In 1987 Emlen returned to Pennsylvania where he built a sculpture studio and for the next twelve years worked on sculpture commissions and custom metal work.

During this time he also worked as an electrician and CNC programmer. In 1999 Emlen took a position at a local avionics company and spent the next 18 years as a software engineer, designing and programming aircraft flight display graphics. During his years as a software engineer he continued to create both two and three dimensional art. In 2017 he retired from the avionics industry and has since been devoting all of his time to sculpture, machine art, and site specific installation.

Tremain Smith Tremain Smith has studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Tyler School of Art, Carnegie-Mellon University and the University of Pennsylvania. Smith has shown widely within the United States including having solo exhibitions in New York; Los Angeles; Chicago; Atlanta; Philadelphia; Scottsdale; Maine; Delaware; Florida; and Hawaii, as well as an artist-in-residence at the McColl Center for Visual Art. Smith’s work can be found in many private and corporate collections, and she has four works in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Smith has been reviewed extensively including coverage by the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Chicago Tribune and the LA Weekly. Her work is in The Art of Encaustic Painting Contemporary Expression in the Ancient Medium of Pigmented Wax published by WatsonGuptill and in the art journal New American Paintings.

Alongside her studio work, Tremain also teaches, lectures, and leads workshops.

Larry Spaid Larry Spaid is a Professor Emeritus of Art at the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. He received an MFA from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA in 1973 and a BFA from the John Herron School of Art, Indiana University, Indianapolis, IN in 1969. Spaid has been exhibiting his work since 1976, including 17 solo exhibitions in the US, the UK and Italy. His work is found in many private, corporate and public collections. Public collections include: Ball State University, Muncie, IN: Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, IN; Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia, PA; Lessing Rosenwald Print Collection, National Gallery, Washington, DC; Temple University Law School, Philadelphia, PA; Penn Medicine, Philadelphia, PA; Trenton State College, Trenton, NJ; University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA; University of North Carolina, Greensboro, NC; University of Tokyo Museum of Fine Arts, Tokyo, Japan; and Widener University and Widener University Law School, Widener, PA. John Howell White John Howell White is Emeritus Professor of Art Education in the Department of Art Education at Kutztown University. He earned his M.F.A. from Pratt Institute and his Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University. Howell White is the author of Experience Painting, a Davis textbook for secondary art students.

He has conducted research and published extensively about the history and philosophy of art education. He has served as Director of the Higher Education Division of the National Art Education Association and Chair of the National Art Education Association’s Research Commission, the Department of Art Education, Kutztown University, and the Council for Policy Studies in Art Education. In 2012 he was named the National Higher Education Art Educator of the Year and in 2009 the Pennsylvania Higher Education Art Educator of the Year.

John Howell White has been a practicing artist for over 40 years. His work in oil, acrylics, egg tempera, and watercolor has generated paintings that grapple with the interplay of cognition, sensation, and affect.

Howell White has recently shown at: The Works Gallery, NYC, NY; Archer Law Gallery 35, Philadelphia, PA; Provincetown Art Association and Museum, Provincetown, MA; InLiquid, Philadelphia, PA; The Cotuit Center for the Arts, Cotuit, MA; and Maryland Hall, Annapolis, MD. His studio is currently based in Philadelphia.

Greg Kelly Greg Kelly is an artist based in Philadelphia, PA. Kelly received his BFA in Painting from the University of Delaware in 1990, and an MA in Arts Education from the University of the Arts. Kelly has worked as a picture framer for over 35 years, including owning and operating the Kelly-Weber 201 Gallery in the Crane Arts Building from 2006-2010. Kelly maintains a studio practice making small scale abstract works out of his Fishtown home.
