The works of Phyllis Gorsen and John Howell White explore the lingering impact a painting can have. Through a mix of abstraction and representation, these works slowly unveil their meanings to the viewer The vibrant and dynamic geometric compositions of Phyllis Gorsen are intended to move the eye using energetic patterns, movement, and vibrancy. They reveal elements of the familiar and commonplace; language, technology, spirituality, environment, and culture. John Howell White’s work is a reflection on how paintings inhabit the world. Paintings, like ghosts, confront viewers through their impact and haunt them through excluded information; they conjure an absence, which ferments attachments and invites future visitations. Phyllis Gorsen, born in Philadelphia, PA, received her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2014. Her work has been exhibited nationally, including galleries in New York, Philadelphia, and California. John Howell White is Professor of Art Education in the Department of Art Education and Crafts at Kutztown University in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. He has an M.F.A. from Pratt Institute and a Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University. He is the author of Experience Painting, a textbook for secondary art students.
This show is viewable online only. In addition to the exhibition site, works are accessible through this digital lookbook, as well as our artsy gallery. Works will be housed at The Ludlow offices of East Market in Center City Philadelphia until March 20th, 2022.
