Rotational Exhibits Park Towne Place Museum District Residences is uniquely situated on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway among the City of Philadelphia’s most cherished art and cultural institutions.

The vision for the community is to fully integrate Park Towne Place into the fabric of the Parkway – providing a unique art experience for residents and visitors alike.

In addition to the permanent art collection on display, rotational exhibits like Chiaroscuro Spring showcase both established and up-and-coming artists. Each exhibit includes companion educational and social opportunities to visit with artists who host talks and provide insights on their original works.

Chiaroscuro Spring highlights the work of seven artists whose work celebrates Spring as not only a season but a time of growth and rebirth. Throughout the show the artists, Anita Allyn, Marilyn Holsing, Sam Nejati, Heather Ossandon, Laurie Beck Peterson, Rebecca Saylor Sack, and Jacqueline Yvonne, present their own unique interpretations of nature’s gradual bloom into Spring: tentatively reaching out towards the sun and in the hope of a warmer tomorrow.

We are at a moment of time for cultural rebirth and reawakening as we emerge from what has felt like a year long winter of isolation. As cities reopen and we reunite with friends and family we ourselves are in a state of Springlike blossoming. Marilyn Holsing and Rebecca Saylor Sack depict these blooming worlds erupting from the ground and providing new landscapes for us to explore and get lost in.

Jacqueline Yvonne, Laurie Beck Peterson, and Anita Allyn all use trees to depict rebirth from a dormant winter. From branches, Yvonne “grows” her family heirlooms, giving both the heirlooms and branches renewed life; while Beck Peterson transfers prints to their tops, making us examine the stumps and their imprinted landscapes from a new angle.

Allyn, meanwhile, prints the images of delicate new branches and growth onto silk cloths, allowing her work to breathe.

Sam Nejati and Heather Ossandon use different media to explore liminal spaces that give way to an emerging spring.

Nejati’s paintings metaphorically capture quiet and reflective moments, and Ossandon’s sculptures focus on still scenes, meant for a spring picnic but evidently not fit to eat. These moments are all fleeting, tender, unsure, but also all capture the joyousness of birth and emergence.

Anita Allyn Anita Allyn’s works include digital video, digital photography, and installation. Her single-channel videos have been screened at The Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, Pioneer Theater in New York, United States Super 8 and Digital Video Festival, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Israeli Center for the Arts. Allyn’s photography and installation works have been exhibited at such venues as The Tate Modern, The Art Institute of Boston, Atlantic Center for the Arts, Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, The Center for Photography at Woodstock, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the 2003: International Photography Biennial, Colombia, South America.

Marilyn Holsing Marilyn Holsing holds an MA in Drawing with a minor in Painting from the University of New Mexico, and a BFA from The Ohio State University. Holsing has exhibited nationally at such venues as Michael Kohler Art Center, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Delaware Art Museum, Woodmere Art Museum, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Holsing’s work is included in many private and public collections including Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Library of Congress, and Woodmere Art Museum among others.

Sam Nejati Sam Nejati was born and raised in Tehran, Iran. He attended the Tehran Visual Academy of Arts. In 1999 he moved to Los Angeles, in 2012 on to the San Francisco Bay area, and in 2021 to Philadelphia where he is now pursuing his studio practice. Nejati has exhibited mainly in the United States, and his work has been written about extensively, most notably in Works & Conversations, Artwork, and Studio Visit magazines.

Heather Ossandon Heather Ossandon is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Philadelphia, PA, USA. Heather holds a BFA in Sculpture from Montclair State University and an MFA from University of Delaware.

In 2018 she was awarded a Maker Creator Fellowship from The Winterthur Museum, and in 2019 was an artist in residence at AIR Vallauris France. Her work has been shown in various galleries including A.I.R Gallery, NY, Worcester Center for Crafts, MA, Laurel restaurant, PA, France, China, and Costa Rica. Currently, Heather is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Delaware State University and operates HEOS ceramics from her Philadelphia studio.

Laurie Beck Peterson Laurie Beck Peterson is an alternative process photographer primarily working in gum bichromate, cyanotype and platinum palladium. Currently, Laurie teaches alternative process photography at Tyler School of Art and Architecture. Her most recent project We All Fall Down began at The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, Philadelphia, PA. Her work is exhibited nationally and internationally and is included in many private and public collections. Two bodies of work were awarded at the 15th Annual Julia Margaret Cameron Awards on view in 2021 at FotoNostrum in Barcelona. She is a past board member of First Person Arts.

Rebecca Saylor Sack Rebecca Saylor Sack earned her MFA from Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University and her BFA from The Cooper Union. She is a recipient of the Fleisher Wind Challenge, and the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship from the United States Department of Education. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions nationwide, including Nicelle Beauchene Gallery (New York, NY), Fette’s Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), the National Art Museum of China, (Beijing, China), Galleria Glance (Torino, Italy), and Donn Roca Gallery (Odense, Denmark). Sack’s work is in the collection of the National Art Museum of China, Alter Hall Collection, and Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, in addition to national and international private collections. She is currently the program director of the Fine Arts Program and Painting emphasis coordinator at The University of the Arts.

Jacqueline Yvonne Jacqueline Yvonne grew up in Greenbelt, Maryland, and attended Maryland Institute College of Art BFA program in Baltimore, Maryland. She later completed her degree at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She completed her MFA at the University of Delaware, where she specialized in sculpture and material culture studies. She has taught sculpture and other fine art courses as an adjunct instructor at multiple universities, and is currently the Makerspace Manager at Swarthmore College. Jacqueline has exhibited works in the Philadelphia region, New York, and Berlin, Germany, and is a member of Automat Collective Gallery. She currently works out of her home studio in Philadelphia.
