Welcome to the

The Indiana Green Expo is Indiana’s largest and most comprehensive green industry educational conference and trade show serving Indiana and the Midwest. The 2022 Indiana Green Expo (IGE) is presented by the Indiana Nursery & Landscape Association and the Midwest Regional Turf Foundation. Since the IGE is managed by green industry professionals for green industry professionals, you’ll find targeted, industry-specific products, information, education, and networking that you can use immediately in your profession. This year Purdue University and industry have worked together to bring you the best line up yet! Our educational programming has something for all facets of the green industry. The trade show features vendors with new products and show specials to make it worth your while. Take your time to visit as many as possible! We thank you for joining us this year and look forward to seeing you again in 2023! MONDAY EDUCATION

MONDAY, JANUARY 24, 2022 MONDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS REGISTRATION HOURS: 8:00 AM – 5:00 pm EDUCATION: Workshops A – G EXHIBITOR SET UP: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm JOIN THE CONVERSATION: #IGE22

WORKSHOP A / Room 107

Making the Right Moves to Enhance Your Weed Control Program Aaron Patton, Purdue University 9:00 am – 12:00 pm • CCH = 3a:1.0, 3b:3.0, 6:1.0, RT:3.0 An effective weed control program must be built on a strong foundation. Through proper cultural practices including mowing and fertilization many weeds can be reduced substantially but not eliminated. In this presentation, learn the most important principles for optimizing control with herbicides including weed identification, herbicide selection, application timing, water quality, and adjuvant selection. The presentation will also cover common mistakes made in the creation and implementation of weed control programs.

WORKSHOP B / Room 108

Concre te Paver Installer Certification (two-day workshop) Donny Duke, Arbor Gold Software January 24: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm • January 25: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm For contractors involved in the residential and commercial installation of interlocking concrete pavements, the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) Concrete Paver Installer Certification is THE industry recognized program for the professionals committed to industry guidelines for segmental concrete pavement installation. The two-day course equips individuals currently employed in the concrete paver installer industry with training and tools to properly install interlocking concrete paving systems. In addition, participants have the opportunity to pursue certification at the end of the workshop, as well as potential industry recognition in the future. Workshop includes continental breakfast, lunch, and refreshments — both days. Monday’s schedule continues on page 4. 2

MONDAY EDUCATION

Monday, January 24, 2022 WORKSHOP C / Room 116

Native Plants Mark O’Brien, Cardno and Indiana Native Plant Society 9:00 am – 12:00 pm • CCH = 2:1.0, 3a:3.0, RT:3.0 Native plants provide many ecological benefits to the landscape and environment. The addition of native plants will provide habitat and food for many pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects, while reducing any impacts of potentially invasive species. In addition, native plants promote biodiversity within the landscape and can reduce inputs. This workshop will discuss utilizing native plants in the landscape and provide insights that you can use to educate your clients in promoting native plants. In addition, the increasing interest and implementation of solar farms across the Midwest will be discussed as an opportunity to increase the usage of native plants. This discussion can lead to a viable and profitable opportunity, thus potentially gaining the knowledge to successfully bid jobs in these solar farms.

WORKSHOP D / Room 117

Rooting Out Soilborne Turfgrass Diseases with Timely Management Lee Miller, Purdue University 9:00 am – 12:00 pm • CCH = 3b:3.0, RT:3.0 Soilborne turfgrass diseases are particularly difficult to diagnose and manage because the pathogens subversively infect and damage roots well before plant symptoms arise. This seminar will describe the soil environment in correlation with the biology and epidemiology of the pathosystem of soilborne diseases infecting cool-season turfgrasses. The course will also explain the crucial aspects of each disease cycle, highlighting where disease control measures can most effectively impede pathogen development.

MONDAY EDUCATION

Monday, January 24, 2022 WORKSHOP E / Room 107

Turf Math Aaron Patton and Ross Braun, Purdue University 1:00 – 4:00 pm • CCH = 3a:3.0, 3b:3.0, 6:2.0, RT:3.0 Practical math calculations are essential for any manager for planning, purchasing, and applying anything to turf. Though few of us like math, these instructors make it educational as well as enjoyable! This workshop covers area calculations, fertilizer and pesticide calculations, calibration, and purchasing decisions. Attendees will receive a comprehensive packet with how-to-instructions for all the content covered and more.

WORKSHOP F / Room 112

Indiana Accredited Horticulturist (IAH) Review and Exam Jim Messmer, Vincennes University, retired 1:00 – 5:00 pm 1:00 – 3:00 pm: IAH Review (additional fee) 3:00 – 5:00 pm: IAH Exam As an educator and experienced IAH facilitator, Jim will aid you in preparing for the afternoon exam. There will be ample time for questions and individual attention. The review is also a great refresher for those already certified — earn IAH CEUs by attending. Contact the INLA (800-443-7336) for program materials which are an additional fee.

WORKSHOP G / Room 116

Landscape Maintenance 101 Kyle Daniel, Tom Creswell, John Bonkowski, Purdue University 1:00 – 4:00 pm • CCH = 3a:3.0, RT:3.0 This workshop, which is designed as an introductory course for landscape management basics, will include topics, such as proper planting, pruning, fertility, weed control, mulching, how plants grow, and more. We’ll also demonstrate calibration of backpack sprayers as a hands-on demonstration. This course will cover many topics that entry-level employees (and those that need a refresher) will need to know for the 2022 season. 5

INEF SILENT AUCTION Dear IGE Attendee, This year’s donations from exhibitor’s help fund the Indiana Nursery Scholarship Fund (INEF). INEF annually offers a scholarship to be awarded to a full-time student enrolling at Purdue University or Vincennes University in landscape horticulture. The scholarship recipient will receive 50% of their scholarship with the first installment at the beginning of their first semester. The final 50% of their scholarship installment will be awarded to the recipient at the beginning of their third semester provided they are still enrolled in landscape horticulture field at Purdue University or Vincennes University and have achieved a “C” grade average.

TRADE SHOW

In 2021, the Indiana Nursery Endowment Fund, which is commonly referred to as the “INLA Scholarship,” had three recipients. Rachel Zelt from Monroeville, Indiana as the individual scholarship winner and two donation recipients — the Indiana FFA Leadership Center and the Indiana Accredited Horticulturist (IAH) program. Rachel Zelt received a total scholarship of $6,000. Currently enrolled in Purdue University’s Landscape Architecture program, she received $3,000 her freshmen and will receive $3,000 her sophomore year, providing proper transcripts are sent to the INEF Board. The Indiana FFA Leadership Center in Trafalgar, Indiana received a one-time donation of $4,000 to help it recover from the impact COVID had on its program. The Indiana Accredited Horticulturist program received a one-time donation of $4,500 to assist in a planned update to the current IAH educational training manual. Again, many exhibitors will donate an item or their booth contents to the INEF Silent Auction in an effort to generate proceeds for the scholarship fund. Auction bid tickets will be available on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at the INEF booth #345 on the trade show floor. The INEF booth is near the Landscape Challenge in Hall D. The bid tickets offers anyone wishing to bid on auction items from vendors inside the hall. The Landscape Challenge donated material will be held in a live auction at the INLA Annual Reception. Both the live auction material and “Silent Auction” material from the trade show floor will generate a substantial amount of money for future scholarship winners. The INLA Annual Reception will be at the Indiana Convention Center, Wabash Ballroom 1 on January 25, 2022 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm (ish). The 2021 INEF scholarship winner will be recognized at the reception and will receive plaques for her scholastic achievements. Thank you for supporting this worthy cause! Sincerely, Brian Julius, Walnut Ridge Nursery & Garden Center & INEF President 42
