TALKBACK Introducing Belinda Lubkoll, a manufacturing jeweller and designer based at Ringcraft Moana & Belinda Lubkoll Jewellery, Ōakura, Taranaki.

When did you first take an interest in the jewellery trade and what happened next? I began working for our local jeweller, Rob Wright at Ringcraft Moana, when I arrived in New Zealand from Berlin in 2009. My background was in marketing, but shortly after I started, Rob had to undergo hand surgery. I stepped in to help at the bench and quickly fell in love with the process - the ability to bring ideas to life and the satisfaction of working with metal.

Today I am a trained manufacturing jeweller at Ringcraft Moana and run my own business under my name, Belinda Lubkoll Jewellery, where I also offer workshops for a range of skill levels.

Preferred type of jewellery to design and favourite materials to work with?

I primarily work in gold and silver. Gold is my preferred metal for its richness and versatility, but in the current market most clients choose sterling silver. It’s also the material I tend to use when experimenting with new designs.

Inspiration comes from where?

I’m drawn to geometric forms and architecture. One collection was inspired by tiles and wall paintings I saw in castles across Germany.

The Bauhaus, (German art school operational from 1919 to 1933 that combined crafts and the fine arts), has also had a strong influence on me, having grown up surrounded by its architecture and design philosophy.

More recently, I created a collection from shells and textures collected on a local beach in Ōakura, which I exhibited in Munich - very organic and coastal in contrast to my structured work.

Who do you work beside at Ringcraft Moana? I work alongside Rob Wright, who is still active in the workshop.

While many would retire at his stage, he continues because he genuinely loves the craft and his long-standing clients.

It’s special to see pieces he made 40 years ago come back through the door for repair.

What services does Ringcraft Moana provide? We are a small manufacturing workshop offering everything from repairs to redesigns, combining traditional goldsmithing techniques with modern CAD technology.

What is the best advice re the trade you have ever received? “Learn to enjoy the struggle -the most beautiful gems are shaped by the tumble between rocks and water.” And don’t ask everyone’s opinion or you will turn in circles.

What are some of your favourite jewellery trends right now? I don’t actively follow trends or industry publications. I prefer to focus on developing my own design language rather than responding to seasonal directions.

What is your favourite piece of personal jewellery? I still have gemstones waiting to be turned into pieces I envisioned more than 10 years ago. I guess I just run out of time, so my own jewellery is always a work in progress.

You were an exhibitor at the 2025 Munich Handwerk & Design fair. What pieces did you show? I exhibited pieces inspired by New Zealand’s coastal environment - shells and barnacle textures collected from the beach in Ōakura. The collection included ‘ram’s horn’ sterling silver necklaces set with diamonds and Biron emeralds, honeycomb rings and barnacle-inspired rings with gemstones.

I also spent some time connecting with the industry, including guild members and fellow designers. It was amazing being able to have my own exhibition under my own name overseas.

Tell us about your jewellery making workshop… The idea grew from seeing how fascinated clients were when learning how a wedding band is made by hand. It also highlighted how few traditional goldsmiths remain in New Zealand and the risk of the craft being

replaced by large-scale manufacturing.

My first workshop invited couples to create rings for each other while hammering, soldering and texturing side by side. Since then, I’ve expanded into weekly workshops covering earrings, bracelets, rings, sand casting, wax carving and stone setting for different skill levels.

What I value most is seeing the pride at the end. The process, the challenge, the laughter and the connection. It creates something far more meaningful than buying a mass-produced piece. I want to help keep this craft alive.

How do you relax away from the bench? I enjoy being active. Mountain biking, artistic inline skating and ice skating whenever I can. We also have animals, which keep me outside before and after work.

Two things that top your bucket list?

Ice skating on Lake Louise in Canada and experiencing a European winter and Christmas with my New Zealand family.

What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done? Leaving Germany with a backpack and moving to New Zealand with very limited English was probably the most challenging and adventurous step I’ve taken.

If there was one luxury item you would like to buy for yourself today, what would that be?

A high-end Garmin adventure watch.

BILLION BARRIER BROKEN

Christie’s Luxury division surpassed US$1 billion in global auction sales in 2025, achieving a 90% sell-through rate and hammer prices reaching 129% above low estimates.

Digital engagement continued to reshape the market, with 85% of bids placed online and 41% of all new

bidders entering Christie’s through Luxury sales. Millennials and Gen Z accounted for 44% of bidders and buyers, while total spend from female clients rose 20% year on year.

At Sotheby’s Hong Kong in April the Jwaneng 28.88ct diamond crossed the auction block and sold for more than US$2.6 million. Recovered from Botswana’s Jwaneng mine, it had been transformed from a 114ct rough by months of meticulous craftsmanship.

The diamond is a 28.88ct round brilliant-cut diamond graded D colour and flawless clarity by the GIA. These are the absolute top grades achievable in both categories. Beyond that, it carries a Type IIa classification, which places it among the rarest natural diamond types on Earth.

Fewer than two percent of all natural diamonds reach this designation. Type IIa stones contain virtually no nitrogen impurities, the element responsible for the faint yellowish or brownish tint present in most colourless diamonds.

The result is a transparency and purity of colour that experienced gemmologists describe as almost water‑like.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was once again graced by many familiar faces on the first Monday in May for the Met Gala. This year, the biggest names in fashion, jewellery, TV, film and music gathered in New York City for the annual fundraising benefit, decked head-to-toe in dazzling jewels with the evening’s theme, ‘Costume Art’, seeking to explore fashion as an embodied art form.

Among those seen at “fashion’s biggest night out”, from left, was Rihanna who wore a look embellished with more than 115,000 crystal beads, paired with earrings featuring two exceptionally rare pear-shaped natural diamonds totalling more than 51.9cts. Meanwhile Zoë Kravitz wore a pair of asymmetric earrings by NZ born, London-based designer, Jessica McCormack, that could be considered works of art and model Cara Delevingne chose the De Beers Individuality earrings from the high jewellery collection Forces of Nature, a tribute to Art Deco.

German company Arnoldi International won Inhorgenta Munich 2026’s Gemstone Design of the Year award for a bicolour Imperial topaz, described by the jury as a nearly 13ct stone with colour intensity ranging from purplish rosé to vibrant orange and copper, “impressively highlighted through masterful cutting”.

According to Alexander Arnoldi the topaz from Brazil is: “distinguished by its exceptional colour complexity, rare natural colour, remarkable clarity and a precise cut that enhances its depth and brilliance.”

New from the New York City-based designer Johnny Nelson, four-finger adjustable rings in gold-plated brass with an antique finish. Johnny was born in England and raised in Brooklyn. He says his biggest influences include Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and the iconic neighbourhood jewellers that elevated hip-hop culture in the 80s and 90s.

British watch brand Studio Underd0g has collaborated again with retailer Time+Tide, to launch a double order of pizza-themed watches.

Two new models, the Burnt Pepper0ni and the Classic Cheese, continue the playful concept that began as an April Fools’ joke back in 2023. The first Pizza pair, released in 2024, sold out quickly and even ended with a one-off Half n’ Half Pizza Unique watch that raised $US17,000 for the charity Mary’s Meals.

The Burnt Pepper0ni takes the bold colours and mad toppings of the original Pizza Party Pepper0ni watch and reinterprets them with a charred, muted design.

It features a PVD-coated case and comes with both a leather strap and a Milanese mesh bracelet.

Jacob & Co. has never been shy about spectacle, but its latest Billionaire watch brings more than just flash: a genuine contribution to the art of diamond cutting.

Recently unveiled to celebrate the Jacob & Co’s 40th anniversary, the limited-edition Billionaire Double Tourbillon Angel Cut introduces Jacob & Co.’s proprietary diamond geometry called, naturally, the Angel cut.

Developed over two years, the 37-facet cut is named for founder Jacob Arabo’s wife, Angela, with the facet count marking 37 years of marriage.

“Twelve years after the 288-facet Jacob cut, this patented cut is a major

milestone in the Jacob & Co. history,” according to the watchmaker’s website.

“More versatile, more luminous, more luxurious, the Angel cut offers a stepped rectangular outline, a lozengeshaped table and cut corners. All of which evenly and harmoniously reflects light to a degree never seen before.”

The watch’s 54 x 41mm white gold case carries 98 Angel-cut diamonds totalling more than 51 cts; the dial adds another 88 Angel cuts, along with 80 emerald-cut diamonds framing twin flying tourbillons at 12 and 6 o’clock.

HARD AT WORK

The new edition of Tiffany & Co.’s legendary Blue Book offers a high jewellery collection that advances classic themes of flora and fauna, showing a garden’s hardest workers bees, birds and butterflies - in elaborate gemstone form.

Tiffany will release this year’s Blue Book in three phases: spring, summer and fall. The northern-spring Blue Book, is titled ‘Hidden Garden’, where the jewels’ vibrant hues of pink, orange and denim blue come from such stones as salmon Padparadscha and sapphires from Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Montana.

Rio Tinto shuttered its Diavik diamond mine in Yellowknife, in the Northwest Territories, Canada, at the end of March after 23 years of operations and more than 150 million carats of rough diamonds. Diavik mostly produced white diamonds, but a few significant yellow diamonds were also found there.

“Forty years ago, there were very few people who believed there were diamonds in Canada, even fewer could have foreseen how many the Diavik story would unfold,” said Sophie Bergeron, managing director for iron, titanium, and diamonds at Rio Tinto.

“To arrive at this milestone has required vision, courage and determination to overcome significant challenges to mine diamonds beneath a frozen lake in one of the world’s most remote and pristine ecosystems.”

The mine, discovered in 1991 below Lac de Gras (about 135 miles south of the Arctic Circle), began operations in 2003 using both open pit and underground mining methods. To fully close the mine, which will take about four years, Rio Tinto will continue to supervise key areas such as safety, land use, water and biodiversity in the area.

NEWS A LASTING PARTNERSHIP

OMEGA is set to continue its legacy in sailing when the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup is contested next year in Naples.

The OMEGA/America’s Cup partnership stretches back to 1995, when the Swiss watchmaker began its long-standing partnership with Emirates Team New Zealand, then under the leadership of Sir Peter Blake.

Each time the New Zealand crew has won the ‘Auld Mug’, OMEGA has been

positioned as Official Timekeeper at the following edition. So far, that has included the America’s Cup events in 2000, 2003, 2021, 2024 and now July 2027.

Bvlgari has announced two new unique Lvcea timepieces, created in collaboration with Japanese artist, Yasuhiro Asai. Asai is known for being a master of Urushi lacquer and the ancestral Raden technique, with origins tracing back to prehistoric times. Speaking on the new dials, Bvlgari’s executive director of product creation, Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani Stigliani said: “We found a new way to speak light through the reflections of thousands of tiny mother-of-pearl fragments. With this technique, we offer a fresh perspective on light through colour.”

It took 60 days to create each dial and due to the nature of the technique, each is unique.

STRUCTURAL DESIGN

Through a process borrowed from aeronautics and automotive engineering, Boucheron has turned loose grains into solid, wearable architecture. 3D-printed black sand brings a raw, tactile beauty to Boucheron’s latest iconic Quatre design.

Layers of polymer binder are sprayed over the sand in ultra-fine sheets, each less than a millimetre thick, until they adhere like a millefeuille of mineral and air. The result is a material that retains the texture of sand while achieving the resilience of metal.

Swiss watch brand Furlan Marri has launched the Meteorite Octa, a new limited pre-order release within its Mechaquartz collection. Only available for 10 days in the month of April, the stainless steel watch features a dial cut from the Muonionalusta meteorite, one of the oldest and most scientifically significant meteorites ever found.

Formed 4.5 billion years ago in the core of a differentiated asteroid, Muonionalusta fell to Earth more than

a million years ago near the FinlandSweden border and wasn’t discovered until 1906.

What makes it special is its Widmanstätten pattern, a lamellar crystalline structure that develops through cooling at a rate of just a few degrees per million years. This cannot be replicated back down here on Earth and every dial cut from the meteorite reveals a completely unique finish. The watch was priced at £680.

ARTISTIC AND UNCONVENTIONAL Known for colourful, unconventional dials and references to art movements, Alexander Shorokhoff watches often blur the line between timepiece and wearable artwork. Limited to just 50 pieces the new Karandash model follows this philosophy.

TOWN AND AROUND Meet the team at Cameron Jewellery, Palmerston North. Cameron Jewellery was started by Peter Cameron 42 years ago and after his retirement in 2022 his daughter Jessie and manufacturing jeweller Sam Drummond, who has worked in the business for more than 20 years, took over the reins.

PALMERSTON NORTH As told by Jessie Cameron…

Tell us the history of Cameron Jewellery – we understand it is the oldest manufacturing jeweller in Palmerston North…

Yes, the oldest family-owned manufacturing jeweller still manufacturing on site. Peter Cameron, my father, started Cameron Jewellery in 1984 after completing his apprenticeship and working in Australia and in Hatton Garden in London. When he started the business he worked on his own and then Jill, my mother joined him. That first store was tiny, in a small area of Square Edge, the Arts Centre here in Palmerston North. They then took the business home and set up a workshop in the garage so they could be at home with me. I used to love seeing the jewellers come and go! They then moved back to Palmerston North and the business continued to grow with Sam and I joining the business in the early 2000’s.

Moving into our current building, the Salvation Army Citadel, was momentous. Jill and Peter spent a year renovating the building back to its former glory and turning the space into a European style gallery with open workshop. That’s where we have been ever since and where Sam and I began learning to take the reins.

Jill and Peter retired in 2022 and Sam and I purchased the business. They are huge boots to step into, but we were

taught well and the business is growing and we are putting our own mark on it while staying true to our traditions.

What services does your business provide and do you specialise in a certain area?

Cameron Jewellery specialises in repairs, remakes and custom pieces for our customers. Repairs are our bread and butter, but it is our one of a kind designs that we are really known for.

Sam and I love creating pieces for the store, we try to make things beautifully unique, we mix metals and love to use colour.

Your jewellery and watch brands include…

Cameron Jewellery of course! German brands Breuning and Bastian, Mark McAskill, as well as New Zealand fashion brands Karen Walker, Meadowlark and Boh Runga, as well as Australian brand Bianc.

What is your role in the business and who do you and Sam work beside?

Sam and I are joint directors, but Sam oversees the workshop and I the retail store and office. We are very grateful to have an incredible, dedicated team of jewellers and retail staff.

Qualified jeweller, James Sheu, has been with us for six years, he completed his apprenticeship in 2023 and is an extremely competent jeweller. He loves completing repairs

and handmaking chain! Rita Bryson works alongside James and Sam and is in her 2nd year of her apprenticeship.

Rita’s talents are her love of design and meticulous workshop with tiny details like flowers and repeating designs.

In the store I have experienced salesperson Eden Vince, who started working for Cameron’s at age 16, when she would come after school and cut wrapping paper and restock boxes.

With us are Tyla Stevens and Naomi Bell and newcomer to the team, Zoe Giddens.

We understand the business has always supported apprenticeship training…

Yes, always. Peter completed his training with Keith Plier and then has trained perhaps eight jewellers himself.

When he retired Sam took over James’ training and saw him finished and is now training Rita. Training apprentices will always be extremely important to us, we love teaching and having a young eager staff. While we have the workshop space I think we will always try to have an apprentice.

How have your customers’ tastes in design and materials changed over the years?

Trends come and go and I think currently we are in a trend of traditional and simplistic. We are making almost everything in yellow gold, with lots of solitaires and three stones. Wedding bands are mostly plain and on the wider side and we’ve also seen an increase in traditional pieces like paperclip and figaro chains with fobs and ingots.

Then we went to all the petite designs with tiny band, micro pave and hidden halos, tiny fine chains and making everything as fine as possible. I definitely love this current trend for durability and practicality.

Sam and James are both tech guys and really like keeping up with what’s happening in the industry with advances in technology. Sam and I believe it’s important to keep the tools and tech up to date. It gives the jewellers (especially James) something to get excited about when we invest in new equipment and keeps them learning, which is also a good thing.

Current best-selling pieces?

For us because it so important to have pieces for different generations and life stages, we like to have quite a range of pieces. We have been selling lots of paperclip and Figaro style chains and chain bracelets, traditional silver bangles and smaller strings of pearls.

In terms of diamond jewellery, definitely oval cut solitaires!

How are you addressing the increasing demand for sustainable and ethical jewellery?

I think we all try our best. I am really exclusive with what suppliers I work with and I ask them a lot of questions, especially around coloured stones. I always pass the information onto the customer and believe it’s important to do so. We are very transparent about our processes and always have been.

Tell us a customer story you are most proud of…

There are definitely a few over a 20year career, but one recently is for a very special customer of ours who was given a voucher to have something made when she retired from teaching.

She took her time deciding what she wanted to have made because she knew she wanted something that would be just perfect and she really wanted to include her father’s wedding ring to add extra special sentimental value.

When she first came to see me, she knew the basic design she wanted and also that she wanted a green stone that had something special about it. Her design was a cluster in our ‘Cameron Jewellery style’, rub-over set with bead set diamonds around and a heavy swept up band, perfect for using her father’s ring.

We went hunting for a centre stone in Peter’s gemstone collection first, as I knew she would love to pick something that he has chosen. We started with emerald, then sapphire and finally green tourmaline. She knew as soon as she saw that stone, the most beautifullycut 2ct fancy round cut peacock green tourmaline with beautiful flashes of blue.

We had the ring completed just before Christmas and it was so very special showing her. Such a wonderful consultation and design process with a really lovely client and then the use of her beloved father’s ring and that her colleagues had gifted her the money for her retirement after a long career, it was just really special.

To top it off she wrote Sam and I a beautiful thank you card!

How do you relax away from the business?

Jessie… Spending time on my lifestyle block with my husband and children and being in the garden.

A fair with a strong sense of community Product launches, networking opportunities and respected industry voices taking to the stage combined to deliver a positive sourcing experience for visitors to Melbourne’s Jewellery Industry Fair (JIF).

Across two days in March close to 900 guests from across Australia and New Zealand were brought together at the historic Royal Exhibition Building. The exhibition floor showcased a broad cross-section of suppliers, including companies specialising in tools, technology, diamonds, finished jewellery, precious metals and manufacturing services. Exhibitors reported excellent foot traffic, strong engagement and positive sales outcomes, while visitors praised the fair’s welcoming atmosphere and strong sense of industry community.

Ahead of the exhibition weekend, the Jewellery Industry Network (JIN) hosted a special workshop in partnership with Platinum Guild International, introducing jewellers to two initiatives launching globally.

The first was the Digital Product Passport (DPP), a technology-driven solution designed to provide customers with greater confidence in the provenance and traceability of their jewellery purchases. The system allows jewellers to share verified product information with clients, supporting transparency and trust in the luxury retail environment. The second initiative was the Certified Jewellery Professionals training programme, an online education platform developed to help retail jewellers strengthen their teams’ product knowledge and sales capability.

Opening the first day of the fair itself, luxury sales expert Bart Ware delivered a presentation on the art of luxury selling, sharing insights into how jewellers can better engage customers and elevate the retail experience. This was followed by Karen Lindley, who spoke about resilience in the jewellery industry, exploring how businesses can navigate challenges and adapt to change using strategic thinking and practical tools.

This year, more than ever, we felt it important to demonstrate our reliability and support during a time of uncertainty. Those who made the effort to attend clearly benefited from the strong sense of community and networking opportunities available.”

In the evening the industry gathered again for the Summer Social to enjoy live music from a jazz band, alongside food and drinks and lively conversation as jewellers, suppliers and designers re-connected after a busy day on the exhibition floor.

First up on the Sunday retail consultant Nick Gray held a session on emotional intelligence in retail, exploring how jewellery businesses can better understand customer psychology and use it to strengthen sales conversations and relationships.

The fair also hosted the Women in Jewellery High Tea, featuring Kate Bishop of Diamond Collective and Kate Bishop Consulting, who shared expert insights into building successful teams and fostering positive workplace cultures within jewellery businesses. Later in the day, Laura Brehaut from the Gemmological Association of Australia delivered a gemmological presentation furthering the fair’s commitment to industry education.

Overall, the 2026 Melbourne event delivered a sense of renewed positivity and confidence across the industry, reinforcing the importance of platforms that bring the jewellery community together.

“The Melbourne Exhibition building is a truly magnificent venue to hold a trade fair. Majestic high vaulted ceilings, endless frescos and light streaming in from the huge windows. The fair had a good vibe and was steady throughout Saturday.

Talking with other exhibitors, most seemed to be reasonably busy, but Sunday was certainly quieter, as it is at most fairs.

One of the highlights was the gelato cart at Palloys, the coconut flavour was delicious. Also the fresh rock oysters were ‘divine’ and didn’t last long!

I managed to find a few things for stock, including a gorgeous red bamboo coral necklace and some nice freshwater pearls. There were plenty of natural and lab grown diamonds on offer, made-up jewellery and coloured gems, but there is no doubt that the increasing price of gold and silver is putting pressure on the trade.

The JIF may be a smaller show, but it has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and is worth a visit if you get the chance. Stay on for few days if you can and have a short break in beautiful Melbourne, lots to see and wonderful restaurants.”

Not all watches are worn the same Sotheby’s has announced ‘The Shapes of Cartier: The Finest Vintage Grouping Ever Assembled’, described as the most important and comprehensive collection of vintage Cartier watches ever brought to market.

The collection comprises more than 300 timepieces spanning a century of Cartier design, to be offered across the house’s Important Watches auctions in Hong Kong, Geneva and New York throughout 2026.

Featuring models such as the Crash, Santos, Baignoire, Pebble, Cintrée and rare Tank variations, the sale charts the evolution of Cartier’s watchmaking across its Paris, London and New York maisons.

Assembled over 25 years, the collection is expected to achieve in excess of US$15 million. The first sale in the series saw a rare 1987 Cartier

London Crash sell for US$1.99 million at Sotheby's Hong Kong in April, making it the most valuable Cartier wristwatch ever auctioned.

A new world of jewellery to view

By Craig Anderson The Hong Kong International Jewellery Show joined my list of events to visit not long after my first couple of trips to Vicenzaoro.

Some years later the opportunity arose to attend this event for the first time with my colleague Debbie Whiting.

The Two Shows, Two Venues - the 42nd International Jewellery Show at the Hong Kong Convention & Event Centre (HKCEC) and the 12th Hong Kong International Diamond Gem & Pearl Show at AsiaWorld Expo (AWE) hosted some 4,000 exhibitors from 40 countries and regions, attracting 80,00 buyers from 150 countries and regions.

Having arrived in Hong Kong a day late due to a cancelled flight, I soon caught up on the proceedings at the HKCEC, including the Jewellery Networking Reception where Kent

Wong, Chairman, HKTDC International Jewellery Show and HKTDC International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show Fair Organising Committee and Winston Chow, Chairman, HKTDC Jewellery Advisory Committee were introduced to the attendees, along with other dignitaries. On show at the event were designer jewellery pieces integrated with a Dragon Dance performance.

The Hall of Fame, was reserved exclusively for top jewellery brands who showcased their latest designs and exclusive jewellery. The superb designs of the jewellery, manufactured in yellow or white gold and platinum, set with diamonds and naturalcoloured gemstones, were impressive in detail and quality.

Technology, Packaging & Display were set side by side giving the opportunity to source both types of products in the one exhibition hall.

On the technology side a light box for photography caught my attention.

The GemLightboxMax, from GemIQ, is the latest in jewellery and gemstone photography. Easy to use with selffocusing lens, LED lighting and the ability to be integrated for those doing valuations.

There were also tool suppliers and the latest in machine manufacturing including electroforming equipment.

of jewellery and watch display, colours and quantities, along with complete showcases and the ability to have your own specific designs incorporated in product.

Friday saw me visiting the 12th Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show, at AsiaWorld Expo, a 28min train ride from Hong Kong Central Station. The easiest and cheapest way to get there as the station platform was within the venue.

There were seven exhibition halls and included was the largest display of pearls I have ever seen. Exhibitors with trays, trays, and more trays of predominately strands of white pearls, but also bags of every size available, along with coloured pearls in visually impressive quantities.

Many lab grown diamond companies exhibited, reflecting the rise in the increased sales and use of these diamonds. One exhibitor had an array of vibrant green smaller stones though other colours were available, along with every diamond shape cut.

Natural diamonds were also abundant in quantities, with one supplier of

large stones having a 22ct rbc on their stand, along with displays of 2ct to 10ct rbc, beside large emerald and pear cuts.

Coloured gemstones, from large to small were readily available as well as some very large stones. One emerald I saw was a 64ct emerald-cut stone and I consider the nicest green I have ever seen. An unusual gemstone that I read about, but had never seen in quantity, was Ammolite.

Canadian company KORITE had varying sizes of complete or near complete Ammonites, the fossilised material Ammolite is cut from.

With numerous seminars and events associated with the event, buyers and visitors had plenty of choice to purchase product from existing suppliers, source new suppliers and attend seminars and functions that would increase their awareness of product trends, new products and technological advances. What I was not quite prepared for was the size of the venues, the number of exhibitors and visitors attending. The scale of the shows meant planning your day and setting up appointments is essential to ensure that you achieve the results you want and give you time to take in what’s on offer. This event should be on everyone’s list to visit at least once.

On the social side I met up with some of the NZ delegation members for dinner at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.

Ammolite, formed more than 70 million years ago from fossilised shells of Ammonites, was officially recognised as a gemstone by CIBJO (World Jewellery Confederation) in 1981. This rare, iridescent, organic gemstone, 70+ million years old, is sourced exclusively from the Bearpaw Formation in Southern Alberta, Canada, and marketed by KORITE. The indigenous Blackfoot people called Ammolite Iniskim - Buffalo Stone and was used in talismans believed to bring prosperity, protection and good luck.

This iridescent gemstone is

considered the Seven Colour Prosperity Stone revered by Feng Shui experts and energy practitioners who believe the stone has absorbed the earth’s and the universe’s positive comic energy, also known as qi (ch-ee).

The seven colours represent power - purple, health - blue, energy - red, growth - teal, creativity - orange, balance - yellow and wisdom - green.

Examples on display for purchase at the fair ranged in size from large complete Ammonites and smaller pieces, across a wide range of shapes and colours suitable to make into jewellery.

The World Gold Council showcased, in collaboration with 10 Chinese gold manufacturing businesses, Hard Pure Gold. Innovative technology that produces pure gold jewellery and products with manufacturing processes that include electroforming and lost wax casting, creating jewellery and items with hardness and durability, which are light weight, brighter and affordable for the consumer, whilst still maintaining a gold purity of at least 99.0%.

TRAVEL NOTES

Like life and business, we all have the occasional setback and international travel is not immune to this. Having set out to travel to Hong Kong, my cancelled internal NZ flight meant missing my Hong Kong connection. A change of flights and airlines allowed me to travel to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, China, then to Hong Kong, but I missed a day and a half at the event.

The trip itself to Guangzhou was not without turbulence and at about the halfway point and some rather unexpected discomfort, it was announced “We thank you for your courage”, which was a fitting remark considering the situation. This also allowed me to experience of arriving and departing one of the world’s busiest airports with passenger numbers exceeding 80 million in 2025.

From my hotel to the Hong Kong Convention & Events Centre, the walk would take 15-20 minutes or a Red Taxi ride of about 8-10 minutes, depending on the time of day and traffic. Buses and the Ding Dings (the trams as the locals call them) are very a cheap transport alternative, as was the train to AsiaWorld Expo.

The trip home from Hong Kong International Airport to Christchurch seemed mundane by comparison to my travel over the last few days. Also thank you to Debbie Whiting for being my guide and photographer.

For anyone travelling to Hong Kong (Hong Kong Island) I recommend the following experiences: A night at the Happy Valley races, travel on the Ding Dings (trams), a cruise on the harbour in the evening by junk boat to watch the 8.00pm light show. Visit Lee Tung Avenue, Wan Chai, where colourful lanterns hang; great restaurants and a vibrant feel. A walk along the harbour from the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club to the Central Ferry Piers to take in the view across the harbour to Kowloon and visit any of the well-known street markets.

The discipline of making From June through to early October this year, L’ÉCOLE in Paris is presenting ‘The Art of Line and Light Exhibition’, which features more than 75 works by American goldsmith Daniel Brush; jewellery, sculpture and works on paper, many rarely seen outside his Manhattan studio.

A cult figure, Brush (1947–2022) was never easy to categorise. He began as a painter and philosopher, then moved fully into metal. By the late 1970s he had turned his loft into a workshop filled with antique lathes and hand tools. Retreating from public life in 1978 he spent more than a decade in near seclusion teaching himself the ancient Etruscan technique of granulation - the painstaking process of soldering minute gold grains to a gold surface.

This exhibition is significant because most of the pieces to be displayed do not travel. Some are being shown publicly for the first time. From early gold-granulation pieces and whimsical Bakelite and diamond-studded animals to silkily carved and engraved steel flowers, they rarely appeared on the market. Instead, passing directly from Brush to the hands of private collectors almost all of whom Brush knew personally. To him, these clients were suitable caretakers of his work.

It’s not a traditional jewellery exhibition - showcases of finished pieces presented as luxury. Brush treated metal as something to explore, not simply shape. Gold, steel, titanium, diamonds, the focus is on surface, light and the discipline of making.

Playful pieces From English jewellery and silverware designer Theo Fennell’s studio at Chelsea Barracks, London. Fennell is nicknamed the ‘King of Bling’ due to his flamboyant designs for celebrity clients.

Showcasing a biblical earthly paradise, a fantastical ring that tells the story of Adam and Eve's temptation and expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

The body of the ring is made in 18ct yellow gold and has engravings of fig leaves. In the middle of these are two modelled fig leaves that open to reveal Adam on one side and Eve on the other, painted in enamel in the style of a Renaissance picture. On the top of the ring is a serpent, minutely carved from petrified wood, in this case Jasper.

This ‘lid’ is surrounded by diamonds and lifts to reveal an enamelled apple. POA,

For someone who has just had a baby girl, or who just loves this little work of art, the Magpie Ring.

‘One for sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a girl and Four for a boy…Magpie…’

The ring is sculpted in white gold and has two Magpies on its shoulders; the ‘two for joy’ from the ancient nursery rhyme. There are rows of mounted diamonds by the finger and another surrounding the red tourmaline (or whichever birthstone might be suitable).

When you lift the ring’s top it reveals a yellow gold Magpie’s nest with a sprinkling of tiny diamonds that he has collected and three miniature eggs, carved from turquoise…. so, ’three for a girl’. £21,250.00.

That adds up. A sterling silver Binary Adder (Model K) mounted on black marble. American researcher at Bell Labs, George Stibitz, made the original version of this in 1936 on his kitchen table, hence the name ‘Model K’. Meet the designer - a rebel maker London-based designer Hannah Martin is celebrating two decades of rocking the jewellery world. Balancing on a knifeedge of gritty rebellion and supreme grace, Hannah brings the punk movement, London's underground music world and sensual references to high-end jewellery.

As Hannah explains: “Musicians make songs out of pain, I make jewellery.

Having some kind of creative output is a blessing in itself because it helps understand what feels quite understandable at the time, in moments of emotional turmoil.”

Hannah studied jewellery design at Central Saint Martins. Her first designs were for men, but were wanted by women, making her an unwitting pioneer in gender fluid jewellery. Soon after graduating, she moved to Paris to work as an intern at the jewellery benches of Cartier on Place Vendôme.

Winning the prestigious Cartier Award gave her the opportunity to breathe and work amongst the greatest craftspeople of luxury jewellery, a transformative experience which influences her work to this day.

“I was spending my days on the

rarified Place Vendôme and my nights at sweaty punk gigs with pretty boys in underground clubs,” says Hannah. “I put these two worlds together and the seed of my brand was born.”

In 2005 she founded Hannah Martin Limited to continue making bold, sculptural and gender-nonspecific pieces of jewellery inspired by film music and rebellion. The demand for Hannah's aesthetic has led to commissions to create complete fine and high jewellery collections for Louis Vuitton and Chaumet. Her private clients include celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Rihanna and Madonna.

Beyond jewellery, Hannah has designed medals for The London Design Festival, cocktail sets for Grey Goose Vodka and hand-blown glass hip flasks for Hendricks Gin.

JWNZ PRESIDENT’S REPORT Thank you to all members who recently completed our JWNZ survey. Your input provides valuable insight to guide our organisation’s way forward.

The results provided us some insight into what we are doing well and more importantly what we need to work on, with a majority of the suggestions for us focussing around more Educational Articles, Increased Member Benefits (industry discounts etc), Greater Industry Advocacy and Enhanced Online Presence. Craig Anderson and I met recently to discuss the results and we have identified some areas we will try and make headway with going forward.

Speaking to customers and our sales team over the last month or two reinforces what many businesses are experiencing: trading conditions remain challenging, with economic pressures continuing to influence buyers. Costof-living constraints and subdued confidence are affecting discretionary spending and the green shoots we saw at the latter part of last year and early this year will need watering if they’re continue to flourish. Members are contending with rising operating costs; Increases in rent/interest rates, insurance premiums, wages and freight expenses are but a few items placing a squeeze on margins. The difficulty being balancing necessary price adjustments to protect margins with maintaining customer loyalty in a competitive environment.

Competition continues to evolve, particularly with the growing influence of international brands and online retail channels. Consumers seem increasingly comfortable researching and purchasing

jewellery and watches online, which is reshaping expectations around pricing transparency, convenience and service.

While this presents challenges, it also creates opportunities for members to strengthen their digital presence and better engage with customers beyond a physical store. Online retail is here to stay and to remain current and competitive it is important to embrace the sales and marketing channels available and the reach that online presence has; particularly to the younger consumer. Those carrying out repairs rather than retailing may be somewhat insulated from this. There continues to be cautious optimism around the continued gradual return of international tourism, which can play an important role in supporting sales in key regions.

Despite these challenges, there are always areas of opportunity; identifying those key areas is the difficulty!

Members who can find a way to differentiate their businesses and build stronger brand value and customer loyalty will likely insulate themselves somewhat from the onward march of the digital world.

In summary, while the current environment remains complex, the New Zealand jewellery and watch industry is demonstrating resilience, especially with those carrying out repair and remodelling work. To continue to grow and to ensure we take advantage of any opportunities we must find new ways to connect with customers and embrace any efficiencies where and when able.

JEWELLERY INDUSTRY REGISTRATION BOARD There have been many challenges over the last three months and I believe it's important to celebrate what we have achieved and take a moment to appreciate just how far we have come since 1996/2005. This was when the JIRBNZ agreed to self-fund and accepted the responsibility for maintaining the continuation of the apprenticeship system for the ‘Skilled Trades’ within our industry.

We are pleased to confirm that the JIRBNZ has successfully met the requirements of the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. Our updated constitution has been accepted and we remain a fully functioning, independent New Zealand Incorporated Society.

Thank you to JIRBNZ Executive members Alistair Saywell and Michael Crout for their excellent assistance with this.

Our qualifications, developed and owned by JIRBNZ, remain listed on the NZQF. Through targeted engagement with NZQA, they have remained largely unchanged since I wrote them in 2015.

Our Education Organisation number is 8075, with the qualifications listed as Manufacturing Jewellery (2632) and Watch and Clock Making (2633). Both are currently listed as Current, which is important as we navigate Consistency Reviews and ongoing NZQA interactions.

I continue to receive regular communication from NZQA, including a recent request for a discussion on how we have achieved what we have and where I see focused resources should be aimed. Our apprentices are well supported; they don’t walk away with large student debt and are currently well supported by industry including our sponsors below. It’s no secret that I feel the future of our industry relies increasingly on support for our NZ Employers and Masters who are prepared to pass on their skills.
