A True American Icon
Let a Timex on your wrist be a reminder that time belongs to you
Since 1854, Timex has embodied the spirit of American ingenuity, revolutionizing a 300-year-old industry to craft quality, accessible timepieces and achieving many firsts in watchmaking. But what truly distinguishes Timex extends far beyond our heritage; our watches have gone from being simple tools to cherished companions through all of life’s moments.
Boccia Titanium watches are made from the highest quality materials. Nickel and allergy free, titanium is not only light, but nice to your skin, perfect for everyday wear. Whatever the occasion, there’s a Boccia watch to suit.
Introducing Antonia Morris, great-grand daughter of JJ Morris, founder of Morris & Watson, a JWNZ Trade Fair sponsor and exhibitor …
Where do you live and who do you share your home with? I live in Birkenhead, Auckland, with my partner, Bruno and more importantly our cat, Des.
What is your role at Morris & Watson and what are your responsibilities? My role is very dynamic and varies day-today. My overarching focuses are sales, HR, management and operations.
Where do you fit on the M&W family tree? I'm proud to say that I'm part of the Morris & Watson legacy; JJ Morris, the company's founder, was my greatgrandfather. Growing up around our Auckland factory, I've had the privilege of witnessing both my dad and grandad working together. Currently, I'm fortunate to be working alongside my dad, David Morris.
What is M&W’s core business and what other services does the company offer? Originally, M&W began with my great-grandfather travelling around Australia, purchasing scrap from local jewellers. This initiative evolved into refining, which soon led to bullion production and fabrication. Our casting department was established in 1985, followed by our chain department in 1998. More recently, we have ventured into crafting handmade chains and bangles.
Who are your customers? We service a wide range of customers, from hobbyist jewellers to global retailers. One of our core strengths lies in our ability to adapt to the diverse needs of our clientele.
A loyal sponsor of the JWNZ Fair, this year M&W will also be exhibiting. What will visitors see on your stand? We love supporting the JWNZ Fair and we are thrilled to be participating ourselves this year to highlight the range of services we offer. As dedicated sponsors, Morris & Watson is eager not only to contribute to the fair, but also to demonstrate our latest offerings to both current and potential customers. We’ve been working hard behind the scenes and visitors to our stand can expect to see a showcase of
both our timeless classics and recent innovations. Joining us at the event will be myself, our General Manager Adam van Sambeek and our incredible team members, Robyn Saint Laurent and Laurie Kearns. We are really looking forward to welcoming visitors and presenting the full breadth of our services.
What happened in your working life before joining the family business? I used to own a food truck and operated markets with a close friend of mine. We loved it, but ultimately, we opted to trade late nights and weekend stints for a 9-to-5. While I do miss the food truck community, I've really enjoyed my journey so far within the jewellery community.
Tell us about two special /memorable moments in your working career... I currently sit at the desk that once belonged to my grandfather and then my dad. I have such a appreciation for the history items can carry and this desk serves as an ongoing reminder of my family's legacy.
Recently, M&W became a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). It was incredibly rewarding to watch our company come together and accomplish this milestone - taking responsibility and closely examining every aspect of the business. We've forged an incredible 98-year history in the trade and witnessing our transformation into a future-focused business is very exciting.
Most memorable holiday? And why? In 2023, my partner and I spent three months in Europe. We did an incredible 5-day hike from Bologna to Florence, which I will remember forever. Partially because it was in 30-40 degrees days, but most importantly for the landscape and food.
What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done, that has taken you out of your comfort zone... I spent two years hitchhiking around Latin America, which proved to be both the most remarkable and the most challenging
adventure of my life to date.
The best thing your parents taught you… Understanding the importance of continual personal growth has been a mindset I embraced from a young age. I’m very grateful that both my parents emphasised the importance of seeking growth and embracing change. They showed me firsthand that it's never too late to adopt new habits and perspectives.
Two things that top your bucket list... Visiting the pyramids in Egypt and seeing M&W achieve 100 years - at least this one is not far off!
Tell us about your favourite personal jewellery pieces… I am lucky enough to have inherited my grandma’s engagement ring that was made by Karl Plank. I wear it every day. It's one of the things I admire most about this industry, creating lasting memories that will be passed down through generations. And, of course, there's my own stunning engagement ring, crafted by Louis the Goldsmith.
How do you relax in your spare time? I enjoy spending time with my partner, friends, and/or my cat, Des - maybe with a martini in hand.
Favourite city for a bit of retail therapy… Melbourne of course.
What is the most important lesson life has taught you? Appreciate the small things, as I live an incredibly fortunate life.
If there was one luxury item you would like to buy for yourself today, what would that be? Does a trip to Egypt count?
Antonia Morris

Despite retiring earlier this year Cambridge goldsmith Geoff Taylor is still making things.
“This teapot took 50 hours of labour and I melted and prepared all the materials in my studio,” said Geoff. “The wooden sections are Australia jarrah and the handle was wax carved, sliced in two and cast in silver. Finished weight 550 grams.
“I hope this inspires the younger up and coming jewellers to continue practicing and to find the joy in the
creative work and to remember that a ‘Man who works with his hands is truly free’.”
THERE IS GOLD IN THEM THAR HILLS
An Australian mining company has told its investors a gold discovery in Central Otago, near Bendigo, may be the largest gold discovery in New Zealand in 40 years. Santana Minerals, which is listed on the Australian stock exchange, estimates the resource contains 2.6 million ounces of gold, at an average concentration of 2.5g per tonne.
Named ‘Rise and Shine’, the discovery was one of five within 5km of the strike, though was so far the only anomaly adequately drilled. The gold found could have a value of NZ$8.6 billion once mined. Santana Minerals has been drilling the prospect under an exploration permit with increasingly positive results since 2021.
DETECTING LGDS
De Beers Group has unveiled its newest diamond verification instrument which will bring its synthetic diamond detection technology to the retail counter for the first time and support consumer confidence through detecting the differences between natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds (LGDs).
The device rapidly screens both loose diamonds and diamonds set in jewellery and has a zero per cent ‘false positive rate’, meaning it will never pass an LGD as a natural diamond and results are delivered within seconds. It has been designed for use at both the retail counter to support the sales process or in the back office for inventory checking purposes. A high-quality digital screen
enables consumers to easily see the differences between natural diamonds and LGDs in real time and the screen can also be used to play promotional or educational videos to support the sales process.
Sandrine Conseiller, CEO of De Beers Brands, said: “Buying a diamond is one of the most emotionally significant purchases a person will make so it’s essential that consumers have assurance that their purchase is authentic and represents the value they expect.
“With many consumers being unaware that every LGD can be readily and reliably detected due to growth structures that are different from natural diamonds, we hope this new device will be a valuable tool for retailers to help their customers make informed purchase decisions. As the retail prices between natural diamonds and LGDs continue to diverge, it’s increasingly important that consumers can be confident in the integrity of their natural diamond purchase.”

RUBY RED ONE-OF-A-KIND
Decorated with 308 Mozambican rubies and timed to highlight the month’s birthstone, the Fabergé x Gemfields Malaika Egg, the latest collaboration between the art jeweller and the coloured gemstone miner and marketer, was revealed on July 1st.
The deep red stones used in the one-of-a-kind egg objet came from Mozambique’s Montepuez ruby mine, which Gemfields majority-owns.
Malaika means angel in Swahili, a language spoken in Mozambique and the pattern on the egg’s exterior done in the signature guilloché enamel that Fabergé is famous for, was designed to resemble angels’ wings.
Fabergé combined the rubies with 4,312 round brilliant-cut white diamonds, 252 round brilliant-cut brown diamonds, 421 round pink sapphires, and 61 amethysts to bring out the fiery hue of the rubies. All the stones are set in 18ct rose gold. As always, Fabergé added a surprise treasure inside the egg. As

ETERNAL SPLENDOUR
Bulgari’s 2024 High Jewellery collection ‘Aeterna‘ celebrates 140 years of the Roman jeweller and is described as a love letter to its city of origin. According to the company the diverse jewels and watches are united by classic Bulgari design codes that pick up the history of Rome; from the shapes of the tiles decorating its monuments, to the emperors that ruled it and the dawn light that seeps in each day to bathe its streets.
High jewellery watches are a keen focus within ‘Aeterna’. These ranged from simple dials secreted within Serpenti mouths, to elaborate timepieces that are more jewel than watch.
The rose gold and blue titanium Fuochi D’Artificio secret cuff watch features a central ruby and depicts fireworks in the night sky with an explosion of precious and semi-precious gems atop black onyx. It took more than 1,450 hours to create the piece.
FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS
The rose and white gold Fenice watch, which took craftsmen more than 3,000 hours to complete, used pink and purple sapphires, amethysts, rubies, pink garnets, tanzanites, iolites, aquamarines and diamonds to create a phoenix inspired by Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s altarpiece in the Roman church of Santa Maria della Vittoria. A tiny dial, fitted with Bulgari’s miniscule Piccolissimo movement, is hidden beneath a hinged 9.78ct Paraiba tourmaline.
Georgini, a leading name in affordable luxury jewellery, announces the launch of the Sydney Soirée Collection. Celebrating 20 years of crafting jewellery for life's most treasured moments, this collection embodies a perfect blend of timeless elegance and contemporary style, marking a significant milestone as Georgini’s third anniversary collection.
The Sydney Soirée Collection is anchored by Fairwater, named after one of Sydney's most prestigious estates. This exquisite piece symbolises romance and sophistication, featuring lustrous mother-of-pearl elements and a unique doublesided stone setting. The Fairwater set comprises five versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched.
A highlight of the collection is the Elaine, a piece that showcases an elongated cushion-cut stone in an intricate setting. The collection also includes a range of sparkling earrings, each designed to catch the light with every movement and intricately-crafted necklaces that elegantly frame the neckline. www.georgini.com.au.
CENTRE OF ATTENTION
Standing out on the show floors of ‘Las Vegas Jewelry Week’, the hottest engagement ring trend was the elongated centre stone.
HEAVYWEIGHT TIME
Before they entered the ring in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to fight for the heavyweight championship of the world in May, Briton Tyson Fury and Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk were given their own watches made by Jacob & Co., in collaboration with design studio Big Time Creative Shop. The boxers’ watches, named ‘Ring of Fire’, are based on Jacob & Co.’s three-dimensional Astronomia Art collection.
The hefty 50mm rose gold timepieces suit a heavyweight wrist and designed as tributes to Mr Fury and Mr Usyk, including 10mm high figurines of both fighters and their blue and red boxing gloves. The watch’s regulator, a double-axis flying tourbillon, controls the rotation of the scene while a small time-only dial also circles the watch face.
With a limited edition of only 126 pieces, the watch has a retail price of US$300,000.
WITH ROYAL COURT DESIGN
Louis Vuitton has launched a high jewellery collection - ‘Awakened Hands, Awakened Minds’ - to celebrate the transformative period of 19th century France when innovation became the legacy of France. The collection celebrates the country’s flourishing savoir-faire, exceptional craftsmen and
leading inventors of the 19th century. Francesca Amfitheatrof, artistic director for Watches and Jewellery at Louis Vuitton, said: “France in the 19th century was a phenomenal time of incredible change when Paris really became the centre of the world. The design language of the
collection reflects that all its intricacies, complications and innovations turned into incredible jewels.”
This is Amfitheatrof’s sixth high jewellery range for the Maison and Louis Vuitton’s largest collection to date. Embarking on the first chapter with 11 themes and 100 one-of-a-kind pieces, ‘Awakened Hands, Awakened Mind’s’, begins its journey with the end of royal court rule, as France’s ateliers and craftsmen were given free rein to explore and experiment.

A QUICK FLIP
Patek Philippe president Thierry Stern voiced frustration that Hollywood hero Sylvester Stallone resold a rare Grandmaster Chime watch within a couple of years of being given the green light to buy it from the watchmaker’s headquarters.
Sotheby’s New York sold the watch, still contained in its factory wrappers, for US$5.4 million to an Asian buyer; likely netting the Rocky star a profit of more than US$2 million.
OFF THE SHOULDER
Australian actress Cate Blanchett and Louis Vuitton led the way in sustainability with a repurposed high jewellery shoulder necklace at the Cannes Film Festival.
Cate Blanchett graced the screening of ‘The Apprentice’ with a one-ofa-kind Louis Vuitton custom high jewellery pearl shoulder necklace. This unique piece is composed entirely from repurposed precious metal, white Ayoka and metallic grey Tahitian pearls and 633 diamonds. The bespoke jewel was hand-threaded to perfectly hug the actress’s shoulders, yet move with the body
The watch collecting community also criticised Mr Stallone flipping such a prestigious watch, which most will never have the chance to buy, even if they can meet the sticker price.
“It is not fair for a client that may have been waiting for this piece for many years and then sees it being sold,” said Mr Stern.
In his defence Mr Stallone said: “I have always thought of this as something to just be admired. I wasn’t going to covet it and keep it forever. That’s just not my personality. I tend to enjoy things and then I like to share them."
JEWELLED SCULPTURES
UNIQUE AND PRECIOUS
The ‘La Pendule Magnétique’ Cartier art deco floating table clock sold for US$1.92 million, more than seven times of its pre-sale estimate, at a Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo Hong Kong Watch Auction. This museum-worthy treasure is crafted of marble, silver, lapis lazuli, nephrite, coral, mother-of-pearl enamel and jade. It is one of the four magnetic water clocks known that was ever made by Cartier’s most talented horologist, Maurice Couët. The present water clock is considered the most lavish and complicated example and the only one bearing the chimera ever made.
The mechanism of this clock operates on the same principle as the ‘South Pointing Fish’ compass invented by the Chinese in 1040 AD. The base is crafted of marble, while lapis lazuli and aventurine accents stud the base.
The basin itself is a Chinese creation from the 17th century. Crafted out of jade, a chimera, an auspicious creature in Far Eastern Mythology, coils around the basin, showing the meaning of good luck, fortune and wisdom. In Chinese imagery, the dragon and fish are often depicted together, symbolising potent and auspicious powers, particularly with control over water.
‘Superstones. Jewellery from the Heart of the Earth’ was an exhibition of unique items by the Tuscan designer Giovanni Raspini at Palazzo Colonna in Rome.
The collection featured the use of natural stones and minerals of all kinds set in silver and gilded bronze to generate jewellery with shapes and sizes that are anything but commonplace: dragons that cling to arms, cascades of amethyst flowers adorning the neck, rock crystal pinnacles rising from the head in the manner of a tiara, tropical fish with enamel scales hiding among baroque pearls and anemone-like mineral fragments.
There is no limit to the imagination of Giovanni Raspini and his skilled craftsmen, who went beyond the idea of formal jewellery to create 30 innovational wearable sculptures. The recurring theme revolved around poor raw materials that are widespread in the subsoil, but rare in goldsmiths' workshops, for example, malachite, azurite and chalcedony.

TOWN AND AROUND
Meet designer Sophie Divett, a Christchurch-based jeweller handcrafting rings and jewellery inspired by nature and antiquity using ethically sourced materials….
Tell us about your background in the jewellery industry, when did it all begin? I first started dabbling in jewellery after finishing my Fine Arts degree, as a creative outlet and way to make a little extra money. I did a few night classes and watched a lot of YouTube videos and spent a year working as a sales assistant at a small manufacturing jewellery shop in Wellington. The more I learned, the more I loved the artform and so I went on to do another two years of full-time study specifically for jewellery design and construction. Cobbled together, these experiences gave me a pretty good foundation for building my business.
When was Sophie Divett Jewellery established and have you always been in your present location?
I began Sophie Divett Jewellery in 2012. The business started from humble beginnings with a small bench setup in my bedroom, then moving to two other locations over the past five years as the business and team has continued to grow and evolve.
In April 2023 SDJ relocated to a new space which we consider our forever home. Our new space at 462 Colombo Street is a beautiful gallery store and workshop, located in a heritage space, in the city fringe suburb of Sydenham. Sydenham is one of the oldest boroughs of Ōtautahi. Since the earthquakes it has become a thriving and vibrant hub for artists, galleries, creative start-ups and street art.
Who do you work beside?
We’re a team of four…well, five including my Labradoodle, Ned.
Louise is our manager, Sophie is my workshop assistant (yes, another Sophie!), and Sammy does our photography and social media, Ned’s role is mainly aesthetic, but he’d say that’s just as important!
Being a such a small team, we’re all multi-tasking all the time. We all work with customers in the shop, taking care of sales and are constantly collaborating
with each other on whatever we’re working on.
Describe your retail space… When we moved to this space we wanted to create a jewellery store of a bygone era. A vintage-tinged calm space that felt distinctly ‘us’ – like an old-fashioned library or den, a cabinet of curiosities you can walk into. We’re painted the walls a deep sapphire teal, sourced antique wooden cabinetry for our displays, sourced vintage oil landscape paintings from op shops and hung dried floral arrangements to create a cosy, calm and luxurious jewel box of our own!
What does SDJ specialise in?
Sophie Divett Jewellery offers handcrafted and custom-made jewellery pieces in sterling silver, gold plated or solid gold. Our ranges include engagement and special occasion rings, ceremonial and wedding bands,
Sophie Divett and crew member Ned.
necklaces, earrings, bracelets and brooches.
Wedding and ceremonial bands are a large part of what we do. We craft every ring to order in our customers’ desired specifications. Choosing from our collection of SDJ organic ring designs and textures – customers can then customise their band width, metal, carat, and size, which we will then bring to life. We don’t believe that any two people, or union, are alike and we don’t think wedding rings should be cookie-cutter either.
We specialise in creating custom rings, either through our ‘build-your-own ring service’, where customers can assemble their own ring from our collection of setting styles and gemstones. Or if you are after a completely new style of ring, I will consult with you to design something with you.
We also love breathing new life into old pieces – part of our sustainability mindset – where customers can bring us an existing piece of jewellery that they may have inherited, isn’t to their style, or don’t wear anymore and we can try to repurpose the stones into a new piece, enabling it to be worn and loved once again.
We understand sustainability is a huge focus of every piece in your collections… Sustainability and ethics are of huge importance at SDJ. Whether it’s using recycled diamonds and metals, ethically sourced gemstones and recycled and lab-grown diamonds handpicked from our trusted suppliers and ring boxes made from renewably sourced trees. These values influence every piece we produce and decision that we make.
SDJ creations are inspired by? Our pieces are inspired by ancient
artefacts, classical Greek mythology and Aotearoa’s dramatic landscapes, terrains, mountain ranges, flora, and fauna. Our signature collections feature castings from real leaves, seed pods and other plants, immortalising every detail and texture.
Our mountain ring collection is inspired by the peaks and mountain ranges of Aotearoa and Aoraki Mt Cook. Mountains hold such special significance for so many and our customers really love to be able to celebrate that connection by incorporating it into in their wedding band, or special occasion ring,
What are your current best-selling pieces?
• Mountain ring collection, specifically Aoraki bands and mountain fitted bands.
• Gem set Mira engagement rings.
Waterdrop circle necklace - 9ct yellow gold with recycled diamond.
Sterling silver Sycamore earrings.
Mountain ring & neve set - both 9ct white gold. Tourmaline centre stone.
• Waterdrop necklaces and earrings.
• Sycamore necklaces.
• Green sapphires are our specialty and we love to set these into many of our rings.
Tell us about two crucial milestone moments in your career… Each time we’ve moved to a new space has felt like a huge leap forward for the business. Our current store is our ‘forever home’ in Sydenham and before that we were located on High Street in the Christchurch CBD. My first shop was a tiny 12m2 space in Cashmere and tiny as it was, signing the lease for my own independent space definitely felt like a big turning point. The biggest milestone for me though would be hiring my wonderful employees, it’s such a joy to be able to come in to work each day and share the joys of this business with them.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the trade…
Be creative about where you get your experience from and be open to any new opportunities that arise, you never know where they may lead. While I’m sure there are traditional apprenticeships available out there, I’m quite happy to have gone a less conventional route.
How do you relax in your spare time?
Aside from jewellery making I like a lot of different craftsknitting, crochet, cross stitch, weaving. Ned and I enjoy a good walk too.
Did you see any jewellery pieces during your recent trip to Europe that really excited and inspired you?
So many! I managed to see so much jewellery and art in Europe, it was really inspiring. Highlights would be seeing the ancient Etruscan and Egyptian jewellery collections in the Louvre, and the Imperial Treasury in Vienna. While not necessarily jewellery, I also loved the Matisse Museum in Nice and the Medici portrait gallery in the Uffizi – they’re pictured wearing some fabulous jewellery.
Plans for the future?
After my Europe trip of inspiration gathering, I have a bunch of new collection ideas swimming around in my head. I’m excited to get back to creating at my bench!
MEET THE DESIGNER …
Inspired by London life
Every northern autumn, London’s Goldsmiths’ Fair brings together a curated selection of the UK’s best contemporary jewellers and silversmiths. Each exhibitor has a unique approach to working with precious metals, fusing techniques and inspirations in innovative ways.
Of the 130, 2024 exhibitors 20 craftspeople will be exhibiting at the Fair for the first time. One of these first timers will be Kasun Ekanayake, Creative Director behind the brand ‘Kasun London’. Kasun was born in Sri Lanka and raised in New Zealand, where he finished a bachelor’s in industrial design and learned jewellery manufacture and design in Auckland under goldsmith Graham Shirley. Kasun moved to England in 2007 during his around-the-world back packing holiday. After working as a designer for many brands in the

jewellery industry in the United Kingdom, Kasun settled in London in 2011, where the ‘Kasun London’ jewellery brand was established.
Inspired from his life and experiences in London, Kasun creates uplifting jewellery collections that are playful and sometimes quirky. His collections are available at leading international stockists and online.
“Close to 20 years ago when I was at Graham Shirley’s we were one of the first in New Zealand to offer 3D printing and CAD services to the trade,” said Kasun. “I was involved in the design of NZ’s first designer jewellery collections.
“My advice to someone starting out in the trade would be if you want to build a brand it helps if you can offer something different to the norm. Don’t be afraid to be different. Embrace social media, especially tik tok and make sure to show off your thinking and making processes through those channels.”
In his spare time during the northern summer Kasun plays cricket as often as he can. “Sometimes it can be hard balancing the shop and cricket matches, but I love the game. I must admit two of my main passions are cricket and jewellery! Also, in my spare time one of the best things about living in London is how easy is to travel to other countries, which I love doing. This helps inspire new collections as well as sourcing
gemstones.
“I do, however, miss the vast space of emptiness I experienced in NZ, the mountainous city landscapes, especially the hilly Wellington city where I went to university. I loved how most cities are so close to the Pacific Ocean and pristine beaches. I love driving in NZ. When I’m driving anywhere near the ocean or the forest (bush) there will always be roads going off the highway leading to interesting scenic beaches or nice forest walks - which I know that my dog Pepper would especially love! I’m definitely due a visit to NZ soon!”

A thimble, a bobbin, a pin cushion, a pair of scissors, or a tape measure may be the simple tools of the trade of couture, but in Chanel's ‘Couture O'Clock’ collection, they become playful elements in a luxurious capsule collection of watches celebrating French fashion designer Gabrielle (Coco) Chanel (1883-1971).
Chanel has a highly distinct and original approach to watchmaking, in line with the house's ethos of embodying the spirit of its founder in everything it creates. Each watch and a desk clock is a limited edition exploring various facets of the couture house's craft, while shimmering with diamonds and alive with whimsical details.
Mademoiselle Chanel was a perfectionist, utterly dedicated to her craft. She was known for her handson approach in her rue Cambon ateliers, where she brought to life her now legendary haute couture creations.
The Mademoiselle Privé Pincushion Cuff Couture yellow gold watch is limited to five pieces. A new motif, inspired by pins in a pincushion, adorns the dial.
The Couture Workshop clock, a unique piece featuring five bejewelled mannequins dancing under a chandelier, also functions as a music box playing 'My Woman,' a melody beloved by Mademoiselle Chanel.
The safety pin necklace has a tiny quartz powered watch and the pincushion ring is set with diamonds and 134 miniature gold pearls.
Boy-friend Couture watch elegantly channels the iconic
featuring intricate silver braid outlines and eight diamonds resembling buttons.
Subtler is the white J12 Couture with scissors for the hour and minute hands, a needle for the sweep seconds and a bezel reminiscent of a tape measure, all against a dial decorated with a dressmaking pattern. The J12 White Star Couture wristwatch contrasts dazzling white ceramic and diamond baguettes and the black link and case edges.

On the wild side
Since its inaugural edition in 2005, the non profit bi-annual event, Only Watch, held under the patronage of Prince Albert II of Monaco, has raised NZ$234 million for the benefit of research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy and other genetic diseases. This came about by auctioning highly creative, one-of-a-kind timepieces put forward by leading watch brands, including big players and niche independents.
This year 47 lots were auctioned by Christies, Geneva, comprising the work of 73 watchmakers and donated by 52 brands. Unbridled from commercial concerns and brand guidelines, they
Designed, developed and manufactured at Louis Vuitton’s watchmaking workshop in Geneva, the Tambour Einstein Automata features a dial of remarkable craftsmanship. Incorporating the techniques of microsculpture and grisaille enamel, the dial depicts the likeness of Albert Einstein in one of his most notorious photographic and mischievous portraits, sticking his tongue out in an unexpected moment of levity.
For the first time Bart and Tim Grönefeld decided to add a hinged hunter case back to one of their timepieces, the Gronefeld 1941 Principia. The dial of the watch showcases a vibrant and intricate mandala design. Bart: “On the dial, you'll find highly polished hour markers. To make this unique dial we started off with 60 base dials to create one perfect dial. It took 16 clichés to print the dial, one cliché for each colour. A mandala is a symbol of the universe in its ideal form, it holds the power to transform a universe of suffering into one of joy.”
produced some truly surprising designs and remarkable feats of engineering to animate their watches. At Only Watch, watchmakers and brands make their watches at their own expense and risk and are therefore free to do as they please.
Czapek’s donation was a unique openworked reinterpretation of a double escapement watch, a combination initially created in 1830 that is still very rare in wristwatches. Two independent escapements beat at their own pace, with any rate variations balanced by a differential, all beautifully featured on the dial side.
Tiffany & Co’s, the Bird on a Rock pendant watch re-envisions Jean Schlumberger’s iconic brooch that he created for Tiffany & Co. in 1965. For the pendant watch design, Schlumberger’s bird is repositioned in a front-facing stance as it perches atop the case. The case features a faceted aquamarine crystal of over 34cts, secured by four 18ct yellow gold prongs, that sits atop a dial with 461 snow-set diamonds of over 1 total carat.
The platinum bird, set with over 3cts of diamonds, has pink sapphire eyes and 18ct yellow gold feet.
Here are a handful of the most inventive and lively.
The Louis Moinet Art-Tech is a strictly traditional watch with a hand-wound tourbillon movement. In similar fashion to the Lederer timepiece, its dial is immediately distinguishable with its vibrant colour palette and intricate dial pattern. There’s use of laser engraving on a silicon wafer, a technique that only a few brands have explored in watchmaking. This approach creates an iridescent surface, showcasing a captivating play of light and adding a unique character to the watch.
Urwerk's Space-Time Blade: Where science fiction and time telling meet in glowing magic. Set on a bronze pedestal, the digits of light guide you through the Spacetime continuum, as the glass column illuminates not only the hours, minutes and seconds but also kilometres.
Continuing their fruitful collaboration with artist Takashi Murakami, Hublot presented the MP-15 Takashi Murakami Only Watch Sapphire, in a case made entirely of clear sapphire in the shape of twelve petals set with 444 gemstones. But the MP-15 goes beyond aesthetics with Hublot’s first-ever central flying tourbillon movement.
To date, the Barbier-Mueller’s Mosaïque II is the only collaboration F.P. Journe has made. The watch has employed the visionary design of Eric Giroud, with the craftsmanship of Les Cadraniers de Genève and Les Boîtiers de Genève.
The result is a 41mm platinum watch, with a mesmerising mosaic of stones, to create a lotus flower that represents more than 1000 hours of work and incorporates 12 métiers d’art techniques. The stones, set using the champlevé technique, adorn the dial, case middle and clamshell back, for a fully sculptural effect.
MB&F and H. Moser joined forces to create a unique version of Moser’s Streamliner for the auction. While combining the design codes of both brands, the star of the show is the return of a miniature DJ Panda, who is in charge of the sounds on the chiming minute repeater timepiece.
Here’s to the heroines
Meet ‘The ReBelles’ - a Stephen Webster collection that draws inspiration from the fearless heroines of history, honouring their remarkable accomplishments, sharp intellect, and indomitable spirit of rebellion. Each of the seven limited edition cocktail rings from the British designer pays homage to the distinct personality and magnetic charisma of the rebel who serves as its muse.

A tale of golden spurs
Chele Clarkin often gets asked to make some ‘interesting’ pieces of jewellery, but her last request was certainly ‘interesting and amazing’. HRH The Crown Prince of Johor requested a pair of solid gold polo spurs.
Chele: “When asked if I would make them I quickly said, ‘of course’, then worried about the logistics later.
This request required specialised help. To produce these required a great team and I could not be happier with the result.
“I had worked with Paul Williams for more than 30 years, I know his work and that I would get the job done right. Paul now works with Nick Cowley at The Refinery - Rotorua's Manufacturing Jeweller, so a good combo. Paul and Nick worked on the logistics together and called on Mike, Paul’s brother to CAD them for us.
“Once they were cast, Paul set to work cleaning them up and putting them together and was given the task of hand fabricating the lettering and gold buttons for the straps. These spurs are more than 300 grams each in 9ct yellow gold, with white gold rollers and the initials TMJ (Tunku Mahkota Johor) overlayed on each spur. Even the buckles are 9ct gold.
“I then got my friend Helen Nash, a saddler, on board to handmake the spur straps. These she made from NZ bridle
leather and they are completely hand stitched. Then to prevent the spurs from being scratched or damaged when not in use, Helen made a pouch each for them using NZ deerskin.
To complete the package was a NZ rimu box with the initials TMJ engraved into the top
Chele Clarkin with Big Betty and guard dog Dory.
“I was worried about how these would get to HRH, but brother David, who has worked with the Royal Family for more than 20 years, had that in hand. I was visited by one of HRH’s body guards who had to duck to get in the doorway and come in sideways - he was a mountain of a man! I gladly handed the spurs to him, knowing they were in safe hands and he personally delivered them.
“When Chele contacted me with a crazy request to make some gold polo spurs, she had to repeat herself when I found out it was for HRH, The Prince of Johor.
“Paul Williams (our senior jeweller) and I set about planning the build and talking to people we would need to assist us in fabricating the spurs. One of the issues with the build was the physical size of each unit, as even the largest casting flasks couldn't cope with the volumetric shape.
“We both decided that the best way to solve the issue was to involve Mike Williams, of MW Design, an industrial product design agency, to supply us with CAD renders which we could break down and reassemble when they had been cast. Another issue was the amount of gold needed and the specialist casting equipment required to start the construction. Much thanks to Morris & Watson for its part in this step.
“Then, between Paul and I, we sank more than 85 hours into the construction and finish of the spurs.”
- Nick Cowley, The Refinery & Solar Jewellery, Rotorua

Take it to the top
Since ancient times there has been a tradition of wearing elaborate head wear to symbolise significance. The Greeks and Romans wore gold braided leaves in the shape of a crown to signify high honours. In medieval times, crowns and jewels were worn by brides.
Tiaras became synonymous with royalty in the 18th century. During this time, coronations were cemented by the crowning of a new heir to the throne. While many of the tiaras have not survived since these early periods, they have been captured in classical art pre-dating the neoclassical period. The

Diamond tiara from the 1930s
This tiara is an emblematic timepiece of 1930s fashions. It is known as a ‘Halo Tiara’, as it is meant to be worn at a steep angle, high on the crown of the head, encircling the wearer with a halo-like blaze of precious stones. The style was developed to serve as the perfect complement to the closely cropped, waved hairstyles that were in favour of fashionable women at the time. This tiara sold at auction for US$659,000.
It is extraordinary because of its graduated series of alternating palmette and arrowhead motifs, each palmette motif supporting a cushion-shaped diamond, set throughout with circular-cut and cushion-shaped diamonds, the band enhanced with baguette diamonds.
From the collection of Princess Maria Immaculata of Bourbon, 1844-1899
Made by Köchert, a Viennese jeweller, this magnificent tiara from the late 19th century was sold at auction for US$898,000. It is constructed from natural pearls and diamonds. The tiara is an openwork, garland design, set with drop features to slightly baroque drop-shaped natural pearls set throughout with cushion-shaped and circular-cut diamonds.
The central elements are detachable and it comes with two hairpins. It was common during this time for tiaras to be multi-functional and worn as necklaces or bracelets.
Ruby and diamond tiara, circa 1896
Rubies and diamonds are the perfect combination in this tiara from 1896. This tiara was part of the estate of Isabella, Duchess of Württemberg (1871-1904). It stands out for the one-of-a kind rubies and bow ribbon set design and includes a set of three matching hairpins. Sold for US$841,900.

From the Collection of Archduchess Margarete Sophie of Austria, Duchess of Württemberg (18701902), this superb ruby and diamond necklace/tiara is from Köchert, circa 1893. It sold at a Sotheby's auction for US$602,300. It is designed as a spray of wild roses, where the stamen and rose-buds are set with cushion-shaped and oval rubies. The leaves are pavéset with cushion-shaped and rose diamonds. Additionally, it includes six brooch fittings and two hairpin fittings.

Showcasing the art of decoration
Patek Philippe presented 80 exceptional timepieces, alongside craftsmen demonstrating their rare artisanal skills at the 2024 Rare Handcrafts Exhibition in London.
At the heart of the collection was Patek Philippe’s dedication to perpetuating rare artisanal techniques such as enamelling, engraving, marquetry, and gem-setting. While other luxury watchmakers increasingly incorporate elements of these skills, Patek Philippe is unparalleled in its comprehensive approach to preserving the full breadth of these ancestral métiers d’art.
Among the showcase creations were pocket watches, dome clocks, table clocks, pocket watches and wristwatches.
Play of Feathers pocket watch featuring a white egret in a miniature painting on enamel. The gold dial is hand-guilloched with a sunburst motif and coated with dark green translucent enamel, showcasing the flinqué enamelling technique. The crown is set with a green sapphire cabochon (0.32ct). The watch is accompanied by a white-gold stand on a green marble base.
This pocket-size work of art is a miniature enamel painting of light playing on purple irises, based on the work of Claude Monet. The makers used 20 colours and fired the piece 28 times at temperatures of up to 900ºC.
Bear and Salmon pocket watch with a caseback in wood marquetry showing a brown bear catching a brightly coloured fish. The incredible detail is created by 315 tiny veneer parts, as well as 75 inlays, from a palette of 38 species of wood of different colours and textures. The dial is in American walnut and the small-seconds dial is in sycamore maple. An almandine garnet cabochon (0.42ct) is set into the crown.
The smoky atmosphere of a billiards saloon is perfectly captured in this wristwatch decorated with Grand Feu cloisonné enamel.
The American Trains dome clock captures the dawn of the age of the railway in the United States. The dramatic streamlined train and New York skyscrapers are recreated in grand feu cloisonné enamel and silver paillons (thin sheets of usually fine metallic foil, as of silver or gold.)
This fascinating scene on a desk clock of coy carp swimming beneath water lilies in translucent water is made of 385 different tiny wood parts, chosen from 36 different types of wood for their colour and texture.
Riding the rails
Earlier this year London’s Theo Fennell launched his collection, ‘Masterworks’, a compilation of one-of-a-kind pieces. Among the collection is the Railings bangle inspired by the various railings of London.
“It often occurred to me how sculptural and individual the railings in London squares and streets were,” said Theo. “I started to sketch out an idea of how a bangle might look if it were made up as a circle of railings.
“I took this idea a step further, adding
a basement gate to act as the opening to the cuff, adapting a version of its latch to act as the snap. Finally, I added a bicycle and a dog to the prototype, and it looked and felt like a miniature part of this great city.
“Since then, we have made versions in every mixture of coloured gold and stones and almost every breed of dog and cat, as well as anything else that might be tethered or leant against the individual railings of that city street or square. Each one also boasts its appropriate, enamelled, miniature street sign.”

Having a swinging time
Pendant or sautoir watches are swinging back into popularity, as revealed at the Watches and Wonders Fair held in Geneva in the northern spring, where fashion houses presented several styles of pendant timepieces in their lineups of creations for the year.
Sautoirs and indeed pendant watches on said necklaces, have been around since the 17th century, becoming popular in the 18th century when French aristocrats started wearing them as status symbols. The name comes from the French verb ‘sauter’ meaning ‘to jump’, supposedly because of the way the necklace dances as the wearer moves and refers to a long necklace that can reach as far as the waist. Unsurprisingly this style had a resurgence in the 1920s, with flapper girls finding them the ideal accessory for drop-waist dresses and uncomplicated necklines.
Watchmaker Piaget brought the sautoir back to the stage with its ‘21st Century Collection’, a line of jewels, each with a secret or open watch dial dangling from precious metal and stone chains. It was Piaget who coined the moniker ‘Swinging Sautoirs’, a reference to the relative freedom of the time mirrored in the freemoving, seductive style of pendant.
The Chanel Bust Long Necklace Couture watch includes a diamond-encrusted dressmaker’s mannequin on a gold chain. The waist slides open to reveal a concealed watch dial.
Adorned with onyx and diamonds the sautoir captivates while the watch, graced with a tassel of lustrous Akoya pearls, completes the ensemble by Vacheron Constantin.
Piaget’s Swinging Sautoir watch is centred on a rare 25.38ct oval cabochon Zambian emerald. The draped chain is hand-made from twisted gold circular links, connected by diamonds and interspersed with emeralds. The malachite dial pays homage to Piaget’s 1960s creations and the sautoir is finished with a three-strand fringe, a silky cascade of diamonds, tipped with cabochon emeralds.
In the nature of things
‘Nature Studies’, a July exhibition of jewellery and objets d’art was an opportunity for Wellington jeweller Steph Lusted to showcase the beauty of Mother Nature through her own personal observations and interpretations.
Visitors were invited to look closely to find moonstones representing dew drops on a leaf, the intricately engraved wings of a tiny insect and a critically endangered species rendered in equally rare mammoth ivory.
“I chose to realise these various subjects in materials that have been used throughout the ages to mirror the beauty and majesty of the natural world around us,” said Steph.

EGGCEPTIONAL ...
In sunny Gisborne, smack in the middle of town, you will find a very talented man, Tony Field, in his beautiful corner store.
Tony trained as a jeweller with Peter Hutchings in Gisborne. He eventually purchased the business, Fine Arts & Jewellers in 1980 and that's how he developed the concept for his current store, Tony Field Jewellers. He has always loved antiques and now offers a wide range of jewellery, pearls, estate jewellery, antiques, watches and products targeted towards the cruise ship industry.
Tony and his late partner Janet Shiach were together for 27 years and travelled the world extensively. She adored sapphires and pearls. On a trip to Singapore, Tony purchased Ceylonese sapphires which he made into a very special Faberge style 'memorial egg' in memory of Janet, who died in 2021. Previously he had made her another egg with rubies and diamonds after a trip to India. These eggs are just exquisite and if you ever get a chance to visit Tony, ask him for a peek.
Away from work, Tony is a keen gardener and lives in an old home beside the river, which has been in his family since 1939. He enjoys gardening as recreation on an acre of terraced gardens, traditionally styled in 'rooms' to reflect his travels with Janet. These gardens were badly damaged in the Cyclone Gabrielle floods, so now Tony is hard at work putting them to rights.

ROVING
The official magazine of the Jewellers & Watchmakers of New Zealand. JT 2024 is the focal point of JWNZ member and New Zealand jewellery and watch industry communication. Published seasonally, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter by InkLink Publications Ltd.
It has been a tough year for goldsmiths, but we are not alone; many businesses are struggling. The hospitality business has been particularly hard hit as has the clothing industry. Retail shops everywhere are generally empty, with minimal staff manning them. The job cuts in the public service have certainly had quite an impact and it is wellknown that a number of public servants are now departing for more promising opportunities in Australia. I have seen these downturns before and this one certainly wasn’t unexpected, following on from the covid pandemic. Some financial experts advise “Just hang in there until 2025.” They may be right in their beliefs; only time will tell.
The Jewellery Industry Registration Board of New Zealand recently
recognised Goldsmiths Guild members Craig Anderson, Brian Barrett, Steve Crout, Andrew Linn, Les Riddell and Mike Sherring, presenting them with their Statement of Attainment Certificates – Trade Certified Master Manufacturing Jeweller. This is an acknowledgement of their long-time support and commitment to the jewellery manufacturing facet of the jewellery and watch industry through training apprentices in the skills required to become Trade Certified Manufacturing Jewellers. These members have a long association with the jewellery and watch industry, with Craig, Steve and Brian all having held the position of JWNZ President. Noel Herd from Blenheim was also awarded this recognition.
It was a sad day for the industry with the loss of David Gill, who passed away recently after struggling with a debilitating illness for many years. He was a well-known character in the trade in Wellington and we will all miss his smiling, cheerful face.
The JWNZ Spring Trade Fair is to be held on Sunday, 8th September. I will be there, representing the Goldsmiths Guild and I do hope that many of our members are able to attend; I would welcome a chat with you. I am also keen to encourage new members, and to meet those who are still training and are likely to be members in the future.
Recently, Pilbrows Watchmakers have had the privilege of working with two of New Zealand’s leading watch microbrands, helping them to produce a high-quality product.
Microbrands have become a significant force in the watch industry, offering fresh designs and innovation. From a watchmaker’s standpoint, these brands represent an exciting opportunity in keeping mechanical watches available to the masses. They excel in personalising the watch experience, frequently involving customers in the design process and maintaining direct communication.
Microbrands also challenge the status quo by providing high-quality timepieces at competitive prices, often bypassing traditional retail markups. This direct-toconsumer model allows for greater access to a high-quality product at a more digestible price point.
However, their growth also brings challenges. Microbrands must navigate scaling their operations, while preserving the attention to detail and quality that initially set them apart. Balancing innovation with reliability is crucial, as these brands strive to make a lasting impact in a competitive market.

The Jewellery Industry Registration Board of New Zealand recently recognised watchmakers Ash Wells and Alistair Saywell with Gary Barwick, JIRBNZ Chairman, presenting them with their Statement of Attainment CertificatesTrade Certified, Master Watch and Clockmaking.

JWNZ PRESIDENT’S REPORT
As I write this report on a sunny overcast/dry/wet/warm/cold/windy/still mid-winter morning, I am determined to be ‘positive'. There are new lambs in the paddocks, daffodils in full bloom and birds singing as they dash to the feeder for a snack. Despite all the doom and gloom, good things are happening, spring is not far away and we can look forward to the 2024 JWNZ Spring Trade Fair at the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron at Auckland Viaduct on Sunday 8th September.
The fair is another sell-out, with 16 new exhibitors (five from New Zealand and 11 from Australia). And we have a waiting list. It promises to be a great day. Our trade fair organiser, Debbie Whiting, has done such a sterling job that we have 'outgrown the RNZYS site
at the JWNZ National Office for your tickets.
There are several hotels close to the venue and parking is available, a short walk from the venue.
Industry members are invited to register online to visit the JWNZ Spring Trade Fair 2024 at www.jewelleryfair. co.nz
The JWNZ greatly appreciates the continuing support of our 2024 Trade Fair sponsors; Star Gems & Jewellery, Landau Jewellery (Christchurch), Pacific Time Industries, Morris and Watson and PEKA and our exhibitors.
2024 MEETINGS
The JWNZ National Council will meet prior to the JWNZ Annual General Meeting. The JWNZ AGM is being held at 2.30pm on Saturday 7 September in the Quarterdeck, at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, (RNZYS), 181 Westhaven Drive, Westhaven Marina, Auckland.
The Jewellery Industry Registration Board of New Zealand Annual General Meeting will be held at 5.30pm on Wednesday 11 September at the JIRBNZ Wellington office.

It is quoted that “it takes a village to raise a child”. With an apprenticeship it is no different - “it takes an industry to raise a tradesperson.” The similarities don’t end there as like young people who go on to form society, our tradespeople go on to form what is our industry.
This could not be truer of the two new tradesmen pictured here. Thomas Luoni started off by enrolling in the first stage of the correspondence course that our trade apprentices undertake,7471 Stage 1, while planting pine trees in Otago, (we do let some of the public also enrol this way to enter the industry). Nick Gould also public enrolled in 7471 Stage 1, but then enrolled in a school course. By means of JIRBNZ introductions, both then went on to gain apprenticeships. They’ve been influenced by many and experienced a wide range of work right across the spectrum of our industry.
Special thanks goes out to the Open Polytechnic, the Minturn School, Everson’s Manufacturing / Dave Moran, Sherrington Jewellers, Jewel Petone, support at JIRBNZ , support from the JIRBNZ banner sponsors below and to all the tradespeople that helped them learn their trade.
JIRBNZ has been able to put into place - where those who have met the standard set to be authorised to be able take on an apprentice, as in a Master and an Apprentice and also been deemed to have upheld the tradition and integrity of the jewellery industry and conducted themselves and their business in such a manner that has reflected credit to the trade, their fellow members and the industry as a whole - the recognition of being
awarded a Masters Certificate.
The focus here is on two new Qualified (yes, Manufacturing Jeweller is a qualification, so don’t use it if you are not qualified), Trade (used as in the Industry) Certified (used as in guarantee by the Trade that they have been assessed as work competent for the industry for which they have been trained) Manufacturing Jewellers. Introducing Thomas Luoni and Nicholas Gould. Qualified, Trade Certified Manufacturing Jewellers. Well done both of you, welcome to the Trade.
We do have more apprentices coming through and you may see me with those who are sitting their Final Trade Certificate examination at JWNZ Trade Fair time. I will be introducing them to the JIRBNZ banner sponsors who have supported these apprentices throughout their apprenticeship, on our walkabout following the conclusion of the exam.
