I would always be hanging out at my good friends, moms tattoo shop and around the age of 14 I got my first tattoo and the minute I sat in the chair and the needle hit my skin, I knew that very moment that this is what I want to do with my life. Now it was just a matter of finding an apprenticeship Coil or rotary? Rotary because unfortunately, during my apprenticeship I didn’t learn coils 100% because of the time period I grew up tattooing in. (2018) From who or where do you get your inspiration? I gain my inspiration from multiple sources. Master tattooers around the world, master painters and draftsmen and illustrators, nature, architecture, cinema, music, the list goes on What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Don’t neglect preparing for your tattoo appointment. Preparation can even start one week prior to the appointment day by staying hydrated, exercising, eating healthy, getting adequate sleep every night leading up to your appointment and eat a full meal right before and don’t be drunk or

Only until I could support myself with tattooing did they respec my decision. My friends supported me from the beginning ⸺ What is your favorite part of the job? Falling into the Flow State and enjoying the process. Wiping the blood and ink away, dipping into the ink caps, seeing my creation come to life. Also being able to connect so closely to others. Artist From who or where do you get your inspiration?

I am inspired by the vibrancy of life, travel, and the emotions experienced. These are an inexhaustible source of ideas for my work.

As for the specific style I prefer in tattooing, Japanese culture has had a significant impact on me. Its traditions, symbolism, and art are reflected in my creations.

ALENA LANG

Alena has been passionate about the art of tattooing for over a decade. The 32-year-old artist is captivated by Japanese motifs, creating work that resonates with Japanese traditions.

Currently based in Montenegro, Alena has plans to relocate to Spain to embark on a new chapter in her career. Her ultimate aspiration is to become a globally recognized tattoo artist whose work is widely sought after.

What do you enjoy most about tattooing?

What I enjoy most about tattooing is its uniqueness. I value the opportunity to help people express their individuality through tattoos, making each piece special and one-of-a-kind. It’s not just a drawing on the skin; it’s a part of their story, their personality, and I love being a part of that process.

Tell us about your favorite tattoo that you’ve ever done? It’s difficult for me to single out one tattoo as my favorite, but I particularly value projects where I can combine animal imagery with elements of Japanese culture, such as depicting animals in kimonos.

These works allow me to play with tradition and modernity, infusing each tattoo with a unique character and meaning.

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? I would advise carefully choosing the artist for your first tattoo. It’s crucial to be completely confident in their skills and style.

Also, I recommend refraining from getting a tattoo until you’re at least 21 years old. This will allow you to better understand yourself and make a more informed decision that you’ll be happy with for life.

How do you see the industry evolving, and how do you plan to stay relevant? In the coming years, I expect the tattoo industry to become even more intertwined with social media and digital technologies. The content we create and share online will play a key role in attracting clients and promoting our art. To stay relevant, I plan to embrace and adapt to new technologies, such as artificial intelligence. This means not only keeping up with technological advancements but also being willing to integrate them into my work, offering innovative and unique solutions.

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to tattooing? I would advise newcomers to the art of tattooing to focus on their own path and try not to compare it with others’ achievements. It’s crucial to spend as much time as possible drawing, as it’s the foundation of all tattooing skills.

How was yours? I’m technically self-taught, but after three years, I met Emerson Forth, and he taught me proper traditional tattooing Coil or rotary? I don’t use pens much; not for me. I was born in Turkey and moved to the U.S. in 2021. I particularly enjoy working with high-resolution photos and blending them with geometric lines to create visually striking and balanced designs. Social media, was once super helpful for showcasing our work and discovering other artists to learn from. Now doesn’t really promote good work as it should. I feel like it’s doing more harm than good. People think what we do is much easier than it actually is ⸺ Have you ever wanted to stop tattooing? If so, why? I’ve definitely had moments like that. I always aim to do my absolute best, and as long as I can, I’ll keep going ⸺ How do you stay inspired and motivated as an artist? I think I’m good at what I do, and every time I finish a tattoo and show it to my client, their reaction keeps me motivated. My partner, who’s also a talented tattoo artist, supports and motivates me to do my best. Daytona Beach, FL native, Andrew Graves, known as “MrGravesTattoos,” grew up in an environment that encouraged creativity.

He developed an early fascination with tattoos when his mother had his name tattooed on her shoulder in the early 90s.

Throughout his school years, he expressed himself through drawing, painting, and other artistic endeavors.

After high school, he pursued a career in electrical engineering, earning multiple degrees and spending over a decade in the communications field.

What do you enjoy most about tattooing?

Creating the ultimate form of art and being blessed enough to get paid a decent living to do so.

Tell us about your favorite tattoo that you’ve ever done? One of my favorite tattoos was for a client whose brother has autism. He called my client “HONEY,” and she had me tattoo it, in his handwriting, on her wrist.

Those meaningful ones pull my heartstrings!

From who or where do you get your inspiration? Living in Florida, inspiration tends to stare us all in the face on a daily basis.

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Tattoos are awesome, but give it some thought. What is cool now may not be as cool tomorrow.

Before picking up a tattoo machine, Fabio spent 16 years as a civil engineer in the construction industry — a career that, while successful, eventually led him toward a creative reinvention. His love for tattoos made the transition feel natural, even if the path wasn’t easy. From who or where do you get your inspiration? I love renaissance paintings, so I would have to argue that most of my renaissance requests or full-color projects are heavily inspired by those types of paintings. It’s a tougher palette for sure, but I think it just sits on the skin so beautifully.

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Please eat and relax. I’ve seen countless clients come in for their first tattoo who feel the need to prove something by either not eating or psyching themselves out thinking it’s going to be much worse than it really is.

How do you see the tattooing industry evolving in the coming years, and how do you plan to stay relevant?

I’ve definitely noticed a shift in the last year or so. The tattoo industry has way more saturation and is becoming more mainstream on social media. I think for my business, the artists I surround myself with have all been able to adapt pretty well by working together and communicating well what we need from each other.

We are all able to crosspromote each other, offer pieces or walk-ins to each other, and sort of steer the boat together so to speak. Back then there was a shop, and

not much power in the hands of the artists as the shop was what brought business to the tattooers; now it’s almost the opposite. A solid and happy team is what builds a business now.

focus on putting out good work. Whatever gets into your chair, knock it out of the park and do that consistently.

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to tattooing?

You don’t have to find your identity as a tattoo artist right away! I know plenty of tattooers who do one style now but didn’t always. In the first year or so of your career, many believe they have to have their brand or their style figured out, and they don’t! Just

Hi, I’m Cera! (like triCERAtops). I’ve been tattooing at Lasting Image Tattoos since January 2022. Art has always been my passion since childhood, with pencil/pen drawings and acrylic ink paintings being my favorites.

My goal is to create unique tattoos that empower my clients. I specialize in black and gray illustration and Fine-Line tattoos.

What do you enjoy most about tattooing?

I love drawing every day, all day. To succeed in the tattoo industry, you need to fully immerse yourself in it. I also enjoy getting to know my clients.

Some people need to express their feelings, and I’m here to listen.

Tattooing is called “ink therapy” for a reason.

From who or where do you get your inspiration? I find inspiration in Mother Nature. Many of my best tattoo ideas come from spending time outdoors.

I’m also inspired by my talented mentor, Bryan Anastasio. He consistently encourages me to have confidence and integrity, discusses my goals, and provides me with the tools to achieve them.

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Do your research on the artist!

Make sure to eat a full meal and drink plenty of water beforehand so you don’t pass out. Get a good night’s sleep.

Remember, if tattoos were truly excruciating, people wouldn’t have full sleeves. Just breathe.

How do you see the industry evolving, and how do you plan to stay relevant? Although I’m new to the industry, I understand that social media is crucial for selfpromotion and attracting the right clients. TikTok and Instagram have been instrumental in my career so far, and I’ll continue to focus on those platforms.

I’m also open to trying new needle brands and other helpful equipment (like fake skin) within the tattoo community.

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to tattooing?

Tattooing is an art form, nothing more, nothing less. Tattoos serve as reminders of special moments in our lives, boost our confidence, and connect us to the art community.

How do you stay inspired and motivated as an artist? I maintain a positive mindset, stay active, rest when needed, and spend time in nature.

I avoid comparing myself to other artists and focus on staying humble and grounded.

Discuss any challenges or obstacles you’ve faced in your career as a tattoo artist?

While I enjoy connecting with other artists, some have big egos. I’ve been friendly with local artists who ended up blocking me after I achieved a significant goal. ✕

Stay humble How do you stay inspired and motivated as an artist? I stay inspired by seeing other fellow artists do their art. I get excited when I see them progress; it makes me want to push more. What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? It’s never as bad as you make it out to be in your head. I’ve noticed that people get so nervous because they’re afraid of how much pain they may be in through the process. The idea of pain can be perceived differently because most of the time any pain that people go through is usually unexpected and unintentional. So sitting down and trying to anticipate a pain that you haven’t felt but are intentionally trying to get can be off putting subconsciously.

But it’s never as bad as people think. Best thing to ever do is relax, be comfortable with who is tattooing you, and ask whatever questions come to mind.

Educating yourself in the process and the industry definitely helps.

How do you see the industry evolving, and how do you plan to stay relevant?

Only being four years in, I haven’t had the opportunity to see the huge changes in the industry like many other artists have. But I have seen that it is becoming more commercialized, in a sense. And everything is becoming more targeted towards social media. Unfortunately, changing with that seems to be the only way to keep up and stay relevant. At the end of the day, it is what it is, but I do envy the older traditions where being an artist was just that, and your reach was word of mouth.

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to tattooing?

Considering I’m still new myself, the only thing I can say is the same things that we’re told to me by veteran artists.

Stay true to yourself, stay consistent, don’t get lazy, always keep learning and working on your craft, and let your art speak for itself.

How do you stay inspired and motivated as an artist? Staying inspired and motivated can be hard sometimes, but just seeing so many amazing artists and what they’re able to do always drives me to do better in my own craft. As well as, working with other talented artists that are always willing to help each other improve. ✕

Clifford Chen, also known as Cliff Ink, is a 30-year-old tattoo artist based in Los Angeles, California. His journey in tattooing began at 16, inspired by his family’s artistic background and a lifelong passion for drawing. Attending his first tattoo convention as a teenager ignited his tattooing career, and he has dedicated countless hours to perfecting his craft. What do you enjoy most about tattooing?

What I enjoy most is being able to do what I love, make art that’s permanent and meaningful for my clients.

Art and tattooing is my way of expressing myself and to be able to put a smile on my clients faces and impact their life in a positive way is definitely what I enjoy most.

Tell us about your favorite tattoo that you’ve ever done?

There are so many tattoos that I really love and some of my favorite pieces I’ve actually done on my fiancé. We’ve been working on a full wildlife animal leg sleeve that we started on in 2018. It’s a collage of various animals going down her entire leg, ranging from tree frogs to a tiger drinking from a stream. I’m really proud of that project!

I have always looked up to her as a person and an artist. My grandmother was also an artist and my father is a painter as well. My family is a huge inspiration to me!

As for tattooing, I look up to many artists. To name a few, my good friends Johnny Bones, Chente Rios, Ebone Capone, Reuster, Genoski, and many more.

These are guys I’ve had the honor of working next to and continue to learn a lot from.

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Think it through and make sure it’s something you would really want and not just a spur of the moment thing, because this is permanent. Another important advice is find an artist that you love and does the style of work that you love.

Don’t shop around for a good price, but instead find your favorite artist and pay what the artist is worth and you will never regret it! Definitely do your research!

What is your favorite tattoo you have on yourself? I love all of my tattoos but my favorites have to be my mothers portrait on my neck and my grandmothers portrait on my forearm. Both done by Chente Rios.

What are some ways you’ve learned to tattoo besides your apprenticeship? Get tattooed and watch artists work. Getting tattooed, you get to see the whole process of how it’s done. From what needles they use, to certain techniques, to executing the piece.

You get to really pick the artists brain and apply it to your own style. ✕

My favorite tattoo i’ve done so far is also arguably one the stupidest tattoos i’ve done so far. It was a bright green monkey jerking off with a flesh light, dick and all. I’d say a lot of my inspiration comes from a blend of new school and traditional artists, which is kind of a weird combination i’m aware. I’ve always had a deep love for both styles. I feel like my brain imagines pieces in more of a new school style, but I still draw in a pretty traditional style. Anything loud, weird, and in your face is pretty much my inspiration What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Drink water and breathe. I feel like a lot of people take for granted how much being hydrated will do for you How do you see the industry evolving, and how do you plan to stay relevant? I feel like there’s going to be even more of an influx of tattooers in the next few years. Tattooing has always been popular, and I don’t think that’ll stop anytime soon. That’s all you can do What is the most important advice you can give someone new to tattooing? Draw. Draw draw draw. There are SO many apprentices I see that talk about wanting to tattoo but can’t finish a flash sheet within a week. You have to be HUNGRY. If you don’t want to draw now, you’re definitely not going to draw later. Also, respect what other tattooers are telling you. Don’t get butthurt over constructive criticism Are there any tattoos you would decline to do based on placement or other factors? The only tattoos i’d refuse to do would be if they went into a place that is not really able to be kept clean (like a butthole) or if it just won’t heal well in that area How do you stay inspired and motivated as an artist? Seeing what other artists I look up to are putting out keeps the fire lit under my ass. Seeing cool shit makes you want to do cool shit. ✕

I’m Daniel Espin, a 32-year-old tattoo artist from Venezuela. I discovered my passion for tattooing while studying arts and graphic design at university.

Midway through my degree, I bought my first tattoo kit and started tattooing friends. This led me to travel to Colombia, where I began working professionally. I later won 1st place in traditional Japanese tattooing, and my career took me to Argentina and eventually to the U.S., working at top studios in Florida and Texas. After a year and a half at Dark Age Tattoo with Rember Orellana, I now work at Studio 104 Tattoo. I’ve continued to attend seminars and courses to refine my skills and remain passionate about sharing my art with clients who trust me with their tattoos.

What do you enjoy most about tattooing?

The ability to make a living from art, whether painting or tattooing, and meeting amazing people who share a passion for creating.

It’s the combination of art and connection that keeps me inspired.

Tell us about your favorite tattoo you’ve ever done. It’s tough to choose because my favorite changes, but one that stands out is a heart with an eye surrounded by surrealistic elements.

At the time, it felt like I reached a new level in my work, though I always have bigger ambitions ahead.

How do you see the tattoo industry evolving, and how do you stay relevant?

Tattooing is evolving with better machines and access to information, though I see some styles straying from the physical limitations of tattooing on the body. To stay relevant, I focus on evolving with the industry, but always prioritize quality in my tattoos and overall art. No matter how technology changes, caring about quality will always keep clients coming back.

What’s the most important advice for someone new to tattooing? The amount of study and practice you put in directly impacts your progress. Talent helps, but dedication and conscious effort are key to advancing quickly in this industry.

Where do you get your inspiration? My inspiration comes from the mystery and beauty of darkness, using techniques that resemble oil painting or watercolor.

I combine these elements with traditional tattoo aesthetics for a unique look.

What advice would you give to someone getting their first tattoo? Find an artist who specializes in the style you want. Just because an artist is good in one style doesn’t mean they can execute every style equally well. Also, remember that quality tattoos aren’t cheap, and it’s important to invest in a lifetime piece of art. ✕

It’s an owl I did in 2023.

I won an award for it, and it was a real turning point in my career.

From who or where do you get your inspiration? I’m really inspired by the old Renaissance painters and by nature. Anything with interesting textures catches my eye.

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Do your research and find the right artist for you. It’s important to find someone whose style matches what you’re looking for.

How do you see the industry evolving, and how do you plan to stay relevant? I think we’ll see more automation, with machines doing simple tattoos. But there will always be a demand for custom work by skilled artists.

I plan to stay ahead of the curve by continuing to learn and grow.

Are there any tattoos you would decline to do based on placement or other factors? I won’t do anything that promotes hate. Other than that, I’m pretty open-minded. If you want a tattoo on your nose, let’s do it.

She gave me a hard time in school because they started to judge me; that led me to feeling uncomfortable and getting really bad anxiety and starting to lose confidence in myself.

You have to keep going.

One of my favorite tattoos is a Walter White portrait I did. It was right before I moved to Paris for a year and it felt like a turning point in my career. It was the first portrait where I truly surprised myself with the result.

It depends. For tattoo artists, I think spending hours on Instagram hoping your tattooing or drawing will magically improve doesn’t help at all, haha What do you enjoy most about tattooing? I am currently working on a series of animal skeleton illustrations and am highly pleased with the progress. The combination of anatomical accuracy and artistic expression has produced visually striking and compelling pieces Can you discuss any challenges or obstacles you've faced in your career as a tattoo artist? In the beginning, my progress was constantly stalled. Good references were almost impossible to find, animal anatomy books were either expensive or in English, video tutorials basically didn’t exist, and high-quality tattoo reference material was incredibly hard to come by. I spent hours hunting down each bone online with poor photos and little help. That lack of resources really slowed down my development How do you balance the demands of being a successful artist with your personal life? I currently limit myself to a maximum of four clients per week in order to dedicate the majority of my time to ongoing anatomical study, original illustration work, and the careful development of each custom design.

This schedule allows me to maintain the level of detail, exclusivity, and personalization that I believe every piece deserves What are your goals as a tattoo artist? My current goal is to keep pushing my artistic growth, with a strong focus on large-scale and full-body pieces. I’m fully aware there’s still an immense amount to learn: advanced anatomy, large-area composition, body reading, flow, and movement. That continuous pursuit of knowledge is what drives me. What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Research.

Beyond an IG search, find recommended people from those you trust. Social media is deceptive, and the person is rarely represented truthfully.

Trust your gut. Speak up about what you want but be reasonable.

The artist knows best, except when they don’t.

How do you see the industry evolving, and how do you plan to stay relevant? I see the saturation starting to have an effect. There’s too many artists to treat clients shitty, and a lot of artists treat clients shitty. In other words, if there are 10 amazing artists in the area, and seven are assholes, the other three stay busier.

We are in the business of discretionary income.

When there is less of that around, people get more discerning with their funds. Again: we need the clients more than they need us. Act like it.

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to tattooing? Take your time. Study all the styles and learn them, even if you don’t want to do them. They’ll all help you.

Keep a humble attitude, and remember: you need the clients more than the clients need you. Don’t burn them.

I’m not religious, I just don’t like the energy.

I plan on staying relevant by treating tattooing like a business, which it is. I market myself online and try to stay relevant to current clients and potential clients. There is also an increase in tattooers now in the industry. Creating and maintaining those good relationships with my clients is important in order to keep them coming back to me How do you balance the demands of being a successful artist with your personal life? Balancing my tattoo life and personal life has always been challenging for me. When I started treating tattooing like a business, it helped out so much.

Setting boundaries is very important. I have set hours for myself for working on designs, or replying to clients. I also have set days off, which I didn’t have in the past, which lead to a constant burnt out feeling. I use my website and social media as a platform to share answers to FAQs, which leads to more serious tattoo inquiries. ✕

Creating designs for my clients and spending so much time getting to know them. I also love having my apprentices as part of my tattoo family. I don’t just teach them tattooing skills, but I also teach them to find happiness in tattooing and in life.

I have a few favorite tattoos I’ve done, but every year I have new favorites since I’m still always learning and growing. You can see my current favorites in these photos.

From who or where do you get your inspiration? Horikyo, who I mentioned before, and also Japanese Ukiyoe artists like Hokusai, Ekin, and Kyosai.

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Nowadays, you can find tattoo artists on IG or online, but you have to find the right tattoo artist for you. Don’t just look at the numbers based on popularity; look at their work.

How do you see the industry evolving, and how do you plan to stay relevant? In Japan, tattooing without a medical license was illegal until very recently.

So it’s getting better, but tattooed people still can’t go to onsens (public baths) or gyms. I think in the future this will change

and get better, but it’ll take a long time, I think.

Since there is no law or regulations right now, a lot more young people are getting into tattooing without knowledge or experience. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing yet.

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to tattooing? A lot of young people think they want to be a tattoo artist because it looks cool or easy. This might be common sense, but tattooing is permanent, and we as artists have a lot of responsibility. I always tell new artists to really take it seriously.

Are there any tattoos you would decline to do based on placement or other factors? I don’t refuse anywhere on the body, so that’s not an issue.

I do only my style of Japanese traditional, so I will refuse any other style.

If a client wants a style different than my own, I have many apprentices I can point them to.

What are you currently working on? Any plans for the future? Recently, I’ve been photographing my clients to capture not only the artistry of Japanese traditional tattoos but also to highlight the unique beauty of individuals who wear them. My goal is to showcase how these tattoos enhance and interact with the person as a whole, beyond just the artwork itself. In the future, I plan to create a photo book featuring these portraits. Additionally, I am working on various art pieces that I hope to offer for sale soon. ✕

My grandmother gave me an old copy of our family tree that lists Odd Nerdrum and my grandfather right next to each other, but their common relation is actually a few generations back. Tell us about your favorite tattoo that you’ve ever done? One of my favorite tattoos I’ve done was a chest piece for this guy. One side was a portrait of his father and the other side was a portrait of his mother, both with a round, cracked stone, greek key patterned frame around them. When I finished them, I just remembering thinking this is really a leveling up type of piece for me.

From who or where do you get your inspiration? I get inspiration from just about everywhere. It could be something from other visual or tattoo artists, music, a concept thought of while talking to a friend, Pinterest, nature, plants, sculptures, patterns, how I feel, and more.

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Sit on the idea for six months, make sure the artist you want to have do it lines up stylistically with what you want, make sure you’re confident in their work, and make sure you’re comfortable.

It’s a big step for some people so being nervous is normal, but if you do your research on the artist and they make you feel comfortable, that should help ease the process some.

How do you see the industry evolving, and how do you plan to stay relevant? The tattoo industry has been evolving and changing at such a rapid speed since I started, I don’t know in what other ways it can evolve more. My plan however, is to stay open minded in how I promote my work, learning either about new tools or techniques, finding new subject matter to focus on, etc. as long as I don’t lose a sense of myself in it along the way!

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to tattooing? Stay open minded. I mean it in every aspect of it. Open to who you learn from, be willing to learn something new whether it’s a technique, a new style, how you interact with clients, etc. You never know who you’ll meet or what opportunities could arise by staying open minded.

How to take good photos, how to make videos. It’s really time consuming, but you can’t expect a client to just come to you. It’s nice because the tattoo reputation gets much better but it also means many more people want to be tattoo artists.

What do you enjoy most about tattooing?

Being able to do art every day. I remember years ago, an 18-year-old Kirstie was contemplating going to Art School but ultimately decided not to as I was too afraid I wouldn’t find a job or be financially stable later in life. Now, I have found my way back to art in the form of tattooing because that is what I am passionate about. We should all do what excites us.

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Be bold, speak up and don’t ever get something you feel pressured into.

Too many of my friends and now clients have told me stories of how a previous artist may have scoffed at design edits, their placement selection or the design

in general. When getting your first tattoo, research your artist and make sure the vibe is right.

The experience should be a fun and impactful memory to look back on, not something of regret.

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to tattooing? Trust the process. The only way to get better is with experience and the only way to gain experience is to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

Discuss any challenges or obstacles you’ve faced in your career as a tattoo artist? Imposter syndrome is all too real.

I have always dreamed of starting a career as a tattoo artist so once I got started, it was hard to convince myself that that’s what I was. But how do you convince someone else of your greatness if you can’t even convince yourself?

That was a hurdle I worked hard to jump over in the beginning. I also tend to be very critical of my artwork so once it was going on someone’s skin, permanently, it took a while for me to feel comfortable taking on larger and more intricate designs.

What are your goals as a tattoo artist?

To at least try every style out there. I really want to experiment more with American Traditional, Neotraditional and Realism.

Our industry in in the midst of a transformation. I think that most of the things my generation of tattooers were “brought up with” are different now. The technology and equipment has evolved a lot, advertising is different due to social media, and the traditional apprenticeship model is dying. I think it is very important to stay up to date on what is going on in the industry, and one of the ways to do that is to continue networking with other shops and artists, as well as going to the occasional tattoo convention. As far as the technology, regardless of what we think of it, we can accept it and use it to stay relevant, or be salty about it and become relics. When I started tattooing in 2006 there were not many female tattooers, and even less white women doing Polynesian tattoos. What sparked your interest in tattooing?

The desire to tell stories through art ignited my passion for tattooing. I was drawn to the idea of using tattoos to express emotions, experiences, and identities. Witnessing the transformative power of tattoos inspired me to become a tattoo artist.

Was it hard getting an apprenticeship?

I didn’t have a formal apprenticeship. I learned through passion and hard work, watching other artists, practicing, and experimenting. My journey wasn’t easy, but it was filled with learning and growth.

Coil or rotary? I prefer rotary machines for their smoother, quieter operation, and consistency. They allow me to focus on artistry and client comfort. The choice between coil and rotary is personal, but rotary aligns better with my artistic vision.

If you could meet one tattoo artist, who would it be? I’ve been fortunate to meet many incredible artists. The beauty of tattooing lies in its diversity, and every artist has influenced me.

I cherish the connections I’ve made and continue to seek inspiration from the vibrant tapestry of talent.

From who or where do you get your inspiration? Inspiration is everywhere. Social media connects me with talented artists worldwide. But inspiration also comes from everyday moments and experiences. My goal is to translate that inspiration into meaningful artwork.

PAUL MCNABB Let me tell you a bit about my journey as a tattoo artist and the story behind McNabb’s Tattoo & Fine Art. I’ve been in the game for nearly a decade now, but my love for art and shading goes way back to when I was just a kid. It all started with my older brother, Shaun; he’s the one who introduced me to the world of tattooing. Watching him work sparked something in me, and I knew I wanted to give it a shot.

At first, I dabbled here and there, nothing serious. But life has a funny way of shaking things up, and for me, that shake came when I found myself incarcerated. During that time, I had a lot of time to think and draw. It was in that chapter of my life that I realized tattooing wasn’t just a cool hobby. It was my way forward. I made a promise to myself: I’d turn my life around and pour everything I had into this craft.

When I got out, I hit the ground running. No more “on and off.” This was it. I dedicated myself to my art, and before I knew it, McNabb’s Tattoo & Fine Art was born. Let me tell you, it wasn’t easy, but the grind was worth every second.

For me, tattooing has never been just about making a paycheck.

It’s about the art, the stories, and the connections I get to make with my clients. That passion is what sets my shop and my incredible team apart from the rest here in Boise. We’re not just slinging ink; we’re creating something meaningful.

of my biggest personal challenges in my career as a tattoo artist was figuring out the style that I wanted to work in, but that is something that will happen with some time and experience. I think it’s nice to explore all different styles of work as an apprentice so you really get a sense of what every style is like, and then after a few years, pick one that works for you How do you politely reject a project that you don’t want to work on? It’s really important to be able to say no to projects that you do not want to work on for any reason; sometimes, the project is in a different style that you don’t feel comfortable working with. It’s important to communicate with your client and be honest with them and explain why you prefer not to work on that particular project. Most of the time, people appreciate honesty!

Are there any tattoos you would refuse to do? (face, private areas, etc) Yes. I would like to work on certain parts of the body only, where the skin is nicely stretched and mostly flatter areas. Small realism requires flatter areas; for example, small portraits could look really distorted when placed on a curvy part of the skin or on a stretchy part. ✕

Phil Moore is a devoted husband and father to a 7-month-old son.

He has dedicated his entire 5-year tattooing career to Prophecy Ink, with many more years planned. Phil’s passion for art began early, and he enjoys exploring various styles, from traditional and neotraditional to cartoons, moons, mountains, mandalas, and everything in between.

Roly met Julie in New York City while attending the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). His journey from Bolivia to the U.S. was challenging, but studying illustration at FIT was a pivotal moment. Drawn to illustrative styles and comics, he once aspired to write and illustrate his own story. Life, however, led him to Tennessee, where he began tattooing to support his family, discovering endless artistic possibilities in the process. His mentor, Andy Casali, was a significant influence until his passing in 2011.

In 2012, Roly acquired half of the studio where he apprenticed and now owns it entirely.

What do you enjoy most about tattooing?

Tattooing individuals with self-confidence issues is particularly rewarding. Witnessing their transformation after receiving a meaningful tattoo is remarkable.

While not every client experiences this, those instances are profoundly satisfying. It’s a privilege to positively impact someone’s self-image through art. On an artistic level, the most fulfilling part is when a project nears completion.

Adding the final touches, such as white highlights and blending, brings immense satisfaction as effort manifests into the envisioned outcome.

I feel like a lot of newer tattooers are impatient and all about finding their “style.” I think learning the art of tattooing, tracing old flash, and having a strong foundation is pretty important. Tell us about your favorite tattoo that you’ve ever done? My favorite tattoo is one I did on myself. I did a color realism portrait of a zombie on my lower leg. I did it over three-day sits, and I’m so happy with the outcome and that I can see it every day.

From who or where do you get your inspiration? I get my inspiration from so many artists. You will see inspiration in my work from Waler Montero, Rich Harris, and Sandry Riffard, to name a few.

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Don’t listen to other people’s opinions of the kind of tattoo you want; everyone has different tastes in what they like. Far too often, I hear of people not getting the tattoo they want because their friends/ family don’t like it; just be you and get whatever makes you happy.

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to tattooing? Don’t rush into anything; things take time, and you can’t rush perfection. You’ll be happy you took a little longer to reconsider/ change plans if needed.

And always take advice from experienced artists; you can always pick up some good tips.

How do you see the industry evolving, and how do you plan to stay relevant? The tattooing industry is such an ever-growing industry.

I can see the use of AI making a massive change to how things can be done, whether the effects will be good or bad, I’m unsure. But I like change. I like things that make the job that bit easier, like the use of procreate and wireless machines. I’m all for the art of tattooing; if you’re doing good tattoos, I don’t care if you used a coil or rotary, or if you drew your design on paper or procreate.

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to tattooing? Listen to your mentor, practice art daily (even nontattoo related), and be prepared to manage your own social media and marketing. Stay humble, embrace continuous learning, prioritize rest and recovery, and never stop creating.

As an apprentice what are your biggest concerns? The fear of giving someone a bad tattoo is a constant concern. While having a supportive mentor who ensures quality, the desire to leave a positive impression and create tattoos that clients love remains a priority.

Has there been any red flags in your apprenticeship?

Fortunately, no. The mentor fosters a positive and encouraging environment, focusing on building confidence and consistency rather than creating insecurity.

Is there any style of tattoos you don’t do as an apprentice?

Technically, there are no styles off-limits, as the mentor encourages exploration of various styles to find what resonates best. However, Fine-Line tattoos with a single liner and American Traditional are currently not practiced due to equipment limitations and preferences in the studio. ✕

Get comfortable with failure—embrace it, get excited by it, because it leads to growth. Let go of your ego; you’re not fooling anyone, and it’ll only hold you back from becoming a better artist and person. Be open to learning from anyone. Always assume the person you’re talking to knows something you don’t. If you’re sensitive or soft, toughen up. Keep your compassion, but build resilience to those who try to bring you down. Whether it’s standing your ground or not letting negativity ruin your day, remember the world isn’t happening to you— it’s just happening. The best thing I ever did was take control of my life. I did custom shoes, I picked up a machine and met my first mentor Kartoon Hero. He was killed in a motorcycle accident six months after we me.
