Beneficiaries of Kappa’s 68th Annual Holiday Homes Tour Newhouse

Vibrant Health

Comfort. Safety. Hope. Three words by which guide the daily work at Newhouse, a domestic violence shelter situated near the heart of Kansas City. Over 45 years ago a small group of women gathered around a kitchen table wondering how they could help a neighbor who recently left her abusive spouse. From the meager beginnings around this kitchen table, Newhouse has grown to provide extensive wrap-around services to help remove any barriers to living a violent-free life. Newhouse emergency shelter provides safe living for 88 adults and children each night coupled with round-the-clock emotional and basic needs support. Professional and licensed staff provide supplemental supportive services to meet the victim’s unique emotional, economical, educational, legal, and housing needs. The greatest barrier is often just simply the victim taking the first step in their journey to becoming a survivor and believing they are in fact are worthy of living a safe and self-sufficient future. Under the guidance of providing comfort, safety, and hope, Newhouse trained Advocates also respond to multiple 24-hour Hotline numbers. In 2018, Advocates responded to over 17,000 Hotline calls requesting assistance or guidance. The calls vary in their requests for assistance; from guidance on how to help a neighbor, to questions on their restraining order, to becoming homeless due to leaving the violent and abusive situation and seeking shelter. For every victim of domestic violence who received safe shelter and supportive services, it all started with gathering up the courage to pick up the phone and call the Hotline.

Vibrant Health is a Federally Qualified Health Center and not-for-profit network of safety net clinics, operating three locations and providing school-based services in Wyandotte County. Vibrant Health care teams provide primary medical, dental, behavioral, and women’s health care services for children and adults – serving more than 10,000 patients and 27,000 visits annually. Formerly known as Turner House Children’s Clinic for more than 20 years, the organization rebranded as Vibrant Health in 2018 when two local safety net clinics merged operations. Vibrant Health’s mission is to provide access to respectful, empowering, culturally sensitive and appropriate high-quality health care for the community, regardless of socio-economic obstacles. Our target population are underserved and uninsured families living at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level; however, persons of all incomes and payment types are eligible for care. Vibrant Health relies on philanthropy to close the gap between revenue received for patient services and expense for operations, new programs and services, new sites and capital needs. Your gift to Vibrant Health ensures that patients receive quality health care, no matter their circumstance, contributing to their ability to thrive and overcome the impact of poverty.

Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation The Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation’s mission is to invest in our members by funding programs that meet the evolving needs of women. The Kappa Foundation provides support for leadership training, harm-prevention programs and educational opportunities, scholarships, financial assistance, and the preservation of Kappa’s heritage. Twenty-five percent of this year’s event proceeds will be used to fund the Foundation’s programs. For nearly 150 years, Kappa Kappa Gamma has recognized women’s potential and challenged them to pursue it. As Kansas City Kappas, we view our support of the Foundation as an opportunity to pay it forward within our organization as well as impact communities beyond our own and help women dream boldly and live fully. his Georgian Colonial home was built in 2015 by Bryce Gahagan’s building company, Gahagan-Eddy. Bryce’s father’s family originated in New Orleans. Both Katie and Bryce, love the charm and timeless elegance of the South, notability the uptown area of New Orleans, so it became their goal to create a family home steeped in southern-style architecture, pared with a modern take on traditional furnishings. The family built in Prairie Village not only for the schools and services available in Kansas, but also for the “in town” feel and walkability provided by the nearby Prairie Village shops and restaurants.

he home features hand plastered smooth stucco and was built to draw as much attention to the front entrance, allowing the garage to appear as more of a carriage house with a lower eave line and dormered windows. Brackets and dental molding adorn the soffits, and the windows are true double hung with simulated divided light. Each exterior opening was given a traditional sill and crowned header. The porches are supported with round tapered columns and the exterior ceilings, all done in a traditional tongue and groove. The unassuming exterior opens to the foyer and main staircase, the owners’ favorite space in the home. The foyer gives the home the character and charm of a different time. The Carrera and Nero Marquina marble floor, along with the white walls and trim feel timeless. Adjacent to the foyer is the formal dining room that comfortably seats 1012. Both the dining room and the foyer open to the main living room which has a coffered ceiling and a masonry fireplace with beveled black marble subway tile surround. Next to the living room is a small library as well as the kitchen which has additional seating for six. The kitchen features inset cabinetry, beveled Carrera marble backsplash and white Quartzite countertops. The children bedrooms upstairs showcase custom bedding and art from Nell Hills. The master bedroom and second floor laundry are located at the opposite end for privacy. The vision for the home’s landscape came early on. Due to the lot’s size, privacy was a must. The backyard is surrounded by a huge juniper hedge and, as a result, is completely private. Seasonal plantings stretch across the front of the house. Hydrangeas in the East garden connect the front and rear yards, with climbing white iceberg roses next to the outdoor dining space.

his Georgian-style home was built around 1922. It was originally owned by Jacob Barzen, the president of Sterling Machinery Corporation. The original rooms of the home include the central hallway, kitchen, formal dining room, and the sitting room. The garage and expanded carriage house were designed by Generator Studio to match the features of the main home and construction was completed this year. A significant renovation was completed by O’Connor Properties in the late 1990’s to add the back entry hall, upper loft, living room and the basement area. The existing theater, located in the basement, was renovated with modern electronics and new decor in 2017. The décor inside the home combines traditional elements with contemporary details.

hen guests enter the home, they will be greeted by the gorgeous black and white marble floors and beautiful fabric-covered walls. The dining room features curtains, wall coverings and a rug that were selected and designed by Portfolio. The table and chairs were custom built for the room by the previous homeowner. The prominent poppy picture is by Victoria Montesinos. The curtains and bench coverings in the kitchen were selected and designed by Portfolio. The still-life art near the stairway was created by local artist Paula Hauser Leffel. The living room features several original elements from the home, including the light fixture and the glass in the doors and the den, which includes the home’s original exterior windows. The room also features two original etchings by Thomas Hart Benton. The great room features a prominent ceiling designed by Mary O’Connor. It includes a piano that is more than 100 years old; it still has its authentic ivory keys. The wooden bench in the room is a handmade antique and was originally stained with oxblood. The room also includes a painting by R. John Ichter. The library in the home features multiple woodwork pieces created by one of the homeowner’s parents. Upon arriving onto the 2nd floor hallway, you’ll notice artwork by Jacqueline Carcagno Weyman, a French artist who currently resides in Savannah, Georgia. The 2nd floor master outer room includes a desk and furniture by Stickley. The area is used as an informal office space. The 3rd floor is a teenager’s paradise. It includes three separate rooms and access to a spacious outdoor porch area. The basement of the home has a full private home theater, a music room and it includes a pool and ping pong space with its own kitchen.

his modified ranch-style home was originally built in the 1940s and has been home to the Koesters for four years. Recently married and now empty nesters, Chuck and Lynette set to work to merge their lives and modify the home for their new needs. Renovation was completed by John Noblit of Noblit Didier, and the couple worked with interior designer Natalie O’Shaughnessy. The traditional look incorporates favorite items from the couple’s previous homes and new items chosen together specifically for this one.

he open kitchen is full of natural light and features new Carrara marble surrounding the bar sink and full-height back splash. Drum pendants from Shades of Light hang over the island, and a custom walnut table by Peter Kohl provides extra seating. A painting by local artist Helen Lea adds interest. The dining room is home to a painting by local artist Lou Marek. A Thomas O’Brien light fixture hangs over a Baumann table. The torchiere is by Kansas City artist Tom Corbin. An antique, balloon-themed screen purchased at a flea market in Paris is flanked by arm chairs with custom-made pillows in a Scalamandre ikat fabric in the living room. Hickory Chair seating and club chairs surround the fireplace. The couple’s Christmas tree features Mrs. Koester’s needlepointed ornaments; family tradition calls for a new ornament for the family’s children each year. The foyer walls are covered in a Phillip Jeffries grasscloth. The porcelain vases from Nell Hell’s sit on an antique table from Mr. Koester’s family. The couple modified the original master suite configuration from two bathrooms and a shared shower to a closet, dressing room and bath they would both share. The dressing room cabinets were designed and built by British Traditions. A Victoria and Albert soaking tub fits perfectly in the niche under the bay window in the reconfigured bathroom. A Lillian August bed is covered in linens from Annabelle’s. Automatic window shades, set to a timer, ensure the room always has just the right amount of light.

alking up to the Lockton’s home you will see stone that was hand selected from seven different quarries. The dining room features a Pennsylvania 18th century Chip and Dale highboy and 18th century set of Hogarth lithographs called The Marriage. Entering the kitchen, you will see a beautiful copper bar, custom made range hood and custom tile and copper backsplash. The Kitchen Aspens are photographs from Vail, Colorado. Mike Savage created a painting of the house with the Lockton’s car and dogs. The painting in the sunroom is of the Lockton’s wedding in Vail commissioned by David and done during their ceremony on site by K. Winters. The table was built by Unruh Furniture. The ceilings are vaulted with oak beams and the walls are shiplap. The unique outdoor living space was designed and planted by the Lockton’s and John Winn. 2019 Annual Christmas Ornament Hand-crafted by Tricia Szasz

T

his year’s Kappa Christmas ornament is sure to be a showstopper. In keeping with the key theme, we have brought back artist Tricia Szasz with a totally new design. A dazzlingly intricate antique silver, crowned key, embellished with sapphire blue, faceted gems. The 75th Anniversary of the Holiday Homes Tour will be celebrated in 2026. To commemorate this momentous milestone, we are celebrating this diamond anniversary with a 10-year series of KEY ornaments. This year will be the third year of the collection. The 2019 ornament along with a limited supply of the first two year’s series will be available at the Holiday Boutique.
