Born in 1972 and brought up in Livingston, New Jersey, Andrew Weill enjoyed a typical middle class family life with his Mom, Dad, brother Michael, and sister, Karen. He laughingly describes himself as a “New Jersey smart ass,” who had a drama-free childhood and played with lots of neighborhood kids. In high school he wrestled and played lacrosse, but despite enjoying sports, it was glass work that got his attention years earlier while watching TV. He was only six years old at the time, but the idea of working with his hands somehow resonated in his soul.

Andrew then spent some time at a community college before enrolling at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, New Hampshire where he became a teacher’s assistant. Being a TA afforded him the opportunity to spend a great deal of time in the glass shop honing his skills. He graduated in 1995 with a BFA in glass and a minor in art education and

work, so ceramics and clay arts were his focus; it wasn’t long before he became quite skilled at pottery throwing on a wheel. He eventually attended Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, and it was there that he developed a true appreciation for handmade art. One of Andrew’s teachers taught him the ins and outs of clay arts and had a tremendous influence on his him. “I learned to appreciate the flaws of hand-made work over the perfection of machine-made objects… before being kicked out of the academy!” he volunteered.

Back in Livingston, NJ and now 16 years old, Andrew sought, and found glass-related work, while finishing school. He landed a prized studio job where he could be hands-on under the tutelage of local glass artist, Lennard (Lenny) DiNardo. Lenny was reluctant to hire him at first until he happened to see Andrew hanging out with a bunch of his buddies,

In 1998, Andrew was fortunate to work in a small glassblowing shop in Sweden. This opportunity allowed him to travel a bit and immerse himself in European glass art. Here he came to appreciate a wide variety of blown glass including the durability and functionality of Swedish glass - think IKEA style - and the spectacular colors of well-known

6 Italian Murano glass. Along the way he picked up some new techniques that were great additions to his growing repertoire of glassblowing skills.

When Andrew returned to the USA, he decided to settle in New England, specifically Vermont. A 200+ year old house with three apartments in Manchester Center, Vermont was an unlikely location for his dream of opening a working glassblowing studio, but with some modifications, a little love, and some sweat equity, he saw the possibilities. He converted two of the apartments into a studio and gallery.

The third was kept as a residence. According to Andrew, the realtor and the locals thought he was crazy, but on July 4, 2000 he fired up his furnace for the first time, and on July 6, 2000, Manchester Hot Glass officially opened its doors.

It has grown and evolved with the community ever since.

Even if you aren’t knowledgeable in the process of glassblowing, it is pretty easy to understand that the glassblower’s furnace is central to the business and is where it all begins. The furnace at Manchester Hot Glass is no exception. Like being a parent of a newborn baby, it requires Andrew’s constant attention. If not in the studio, regardless of where he is in the world, Andrew calls in to be sure all is well with the furnace. It is actually kept running 335 days a year, save for April when the furnace is shut down for 30 days. This offers him a brief respite from glassblowing and allows for planned maintenance and repair.

A glassblowing furnace reaches 2400 degrees Fahrenheit in order to melt glass and is an extremely expensive piece of equipment. Besides maintenance and repair, it goes without saying that operating it properly is essential to the ongoing safety and success of blowing glass. But when asked if the art of glassblowing is dangerous or intimidating Andrew replied, “it is no more intimidating than turning on a computer if you don’t know what you’re doing.”

How is it done? Basically, glassblowing is a very straightforward process. A glassblower heats a mixture of pure silica and other additives into molten glass, then turns the molten glass into decorative and utilitarian objects.

Sounds easy. It’s not. It starts by melting the silica mixture in a ceramic container called a crucible, which sits inside the furnace. When melted to a molten lava state, the glassblower extends a four foot long steel blowpipe into the mixture and gathers layers of the molten clear glass. Without pause, and while still holding onto the blowpipe, the glassblower places the end with the molten glass onto a steel table called a marver and rotates the pipe until it begins to take a cylindrical shape. He or she then moves to the glory hole, which is a separate opening on the side of the furnace where the temperature is maintained, at or just above, 1000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Here the blowpipe is inserted and continuously rotated to reheat the glass only to be brought back to the marver to be turned again. This back and forth process is a precisely choreographed dance whose steps are repeated many, many times to keep the glass at the right temperature for continuous shaping and forming.

It is at this point that color is added using powders and other color forms called bars and frits. By rolling the blowpipe end with molten glass into these substances and then returning to the glory hole, the glassblower will continually finesse the shape of the final piece while the

color is melting into the clear glass. In addition, various specialty tools are used, including crimps, paddles, shears and blocks to create openings, handles, stems, and decorative elements as desired. As you can imagine, it is incredibly challenging to simultaneously turn the piece with one hand while using the other to snip, prod, and coax it along. Being ambidextrous comes in very handy for a glassblower.

Now is the moment when the glassblower blows the first puff of air through the blowpipe into the molten glass. Blowing, turning, shaping, and reheating is repeated as many times as it takes to achieve the client’s vision. When the glassblower is ready, an assistant will take another steel pipe called a punty, which has been heating in the furnace during this time, gather some clear melted glass from the crucible, and walk over to the glassblower who is now seated briefly at a bench. The glassblower stops turning the blowpipe with the colorful, hot glass cylinder and allows the assistant to carefully attach the punty to its bottom surface. At just the right moment, the glassblower raps the blowpipe, breaking it away and leaving the cylinder attached to the punty.

Assuming the transfer was successful, the punty with the evolving piece, is once again heated in the glory hole, then turned and detailed some more by the glassblower. When done, the glassblower firmly hits the punty so the new blown glass piece will drop off into a box filled with layers and layers of fire blankets.

Finally, the glassblower dons Kevlar gloves, picks up the super-hot piece, and quickly moves it into the annealing oven, which has been kept at 960 degrees Fahrenheit. A slow cooling process begins that will last over 14 hours, to ensure that all the stressors in the glass are released, so the piece does not crack or break. Now the piece is considered done except for the sharp edges left by the punty that will need to be ground off.

It’s a very deliberate process that has the potential for immense joy and satisfaction as well as heartbreak and frustration. Andrew calls it a “humbling job” because it is not uncommon for a piece to be nearly finished only to accidentally drop on the floor as it is being removed from the blowpipe or punty. That’s when you literally pick up the pieces and start again.

In 2008, Manchester Hot Glass experienced a slowdown in business, as did so many other small businesses. That was the year Andrew decided to offer private glassblowing classes in his studio. They were an instant hit. He discovered that he loved teaching and unabashedly describes himself as animated and entertaining. The classes include locals, tourists, and celebrities as well. For Andrew, teaching classes keeps him in the studio, which he loves. He encourages his students to “have fun, don’t get hurt, and make some nice stuff.” When asked what the most popular colors in blown glass are, he replied with a glassblower’s

must survive being tossed on the floor or into a truck without the contents breaking. After all the hard work, breakage at this point is both devastating and expensive. mantra, “If you can’t make it good, then make it big. If you can’t make it big, then make it blue.” So blue it is.

Custom lighting is another segment of the business that continues to grow and challenge Andrew and his team. Architects, interior designers, and homeowners alike have discovered their talent

and creativity. Currently they are working on a custom light fixture for a New Jersey home. It consists of 19 greige-colored (grayish beige) glass cylinders with white interiors, each measuring 10 inches tall by 4.5 inches wide. When wired and assembled, the cylinders will spiral down 12 feet in length and 2.5 feet in width from the ceiling of the home’s foyer. No doubt it will be spectacular.

And yet with all the risks and stressors, Andrew would not have it any other way. This is his 20th year in the business. He says that glassblowing for him is not just a career, but a lifestyle. It’s with him 24/7. He gives tremendous credit to his wife, Trish, who is an artist in her own right and a vital part of the Manchester Hot Glass team. According to Andrew, “she turns my doodles and scribbles into understandable designs and amazing renderings,” which is crucial to explaining a creation to a client or glassblower. Trish also maintains their social media presence and keeps the business side of the company running. They make a great team.

Daughter, Sofia, is the unofficial third family member in the business, and she definitely has the artist genes. You can hear the pride in Andrew’s voice when he speaks of her budding talent and love of glassblowing. Neither scared nor intimidated, and with the help of her Dad, she was just a toddler when she held a blowpipe and blew some glass for the first time. Today, eight year old Sofia is always eager Sofia and Andrew to blow glass with him in the studio, so it’s easy to imagine her working side by side with Andrew in the coming years.

He says he will continue to do glassblowing for as long as he can sustain a living “making things nobody needs.” And when asked where he sees himself going after Manchester Hot Glass, Andrew nonchalantly replies, “fishing.”

Saratoga Springs’ Caffe Lena A Storied Past. A Remarkable Present. An Exciting Future.

It was named after Lena with two f’s in the word Caffe because Lena was Italian, and Caffe is the Italian word for coffee.

Caffe Lena began as an unassuming coffee shop in 1960 and quickly became a favored gathering place for locals, college students, and tourists alike. Located in a former woodworking shop at 47 Phila St. in Saratoga Springs, New York, it also became an important venue for a “Who’s Who” list of 1960’s performing artists. The owners, married couple Lena Nargi

Like any small business, Caffe Lena had its ups and downs, but those ups and downs quickly became personal when their marriage broke up and Bill left, leaving Lena to shoulder the responsibility of running the Caffe by herself. Now its sole owner, Lena immersed herself in every aspect of the business and in the lives of those who performed. Strident in her beliefs, she was equal part mother, dreamer, and activist. The Caffe quickly became a destination for many emerging and established entertainers who could not have found a more enthusiastic promoter and supportive fan than Lena Spencer. She sought out and welcomed all kinds of talent including

writers, poets, folksingers, musicians, actors, and artists. She mothered them when they needed mothering, fed them when they were hungry, and gave them a place to stay when there was nowhere else for them to go.

afraid of success, because either one gets in the way of your work.”

Many recognizable name artists passed through Lena’s doors in the early days and some even found shelter under her roof including Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Don McLean, Emmylou Harris, and Maria Mulduar. Arlo Guthrie summed it up best when he said, “When I was just a kid I came stompin’ up Lena’s stairs and got took care of. I came to believe she was someone I could trust.” And she was.

Those who did not receive the global acclaim that these name performers enjoyed, but were staples in the coffeehouse circuit, were also embraced by Lena. Dave Van Ronk, Reverend Gary Davis and Rosalie Sorrels appeared on Caffe Lena’s entertainment

roster over and over again dating back to 1960 when she first opened. These folks were modern day troubadours, living a hardscrabble life, but committed to their craft. Lena understood their struggles and truly appreciated their talent as did so many of their Saratoga fans.

Dave Van Ronk was an American folksinger who was considered the patriarch of the Greenwich Village Music Scene and often called the “Mayor of MacDougal Street.” He first performed at Caffe Lena in June, 1960 and many times thereafter until his death in 2002. One of his memorable quotes when interviewed speaks for all performers, “You can’t be afraid of failure and you can’t be

Reverend Gary Davis, another regular at Caffe Lena, was a folklorist and gospel singer as well. Blind from the age of three, he was also known as Blind Gary Davis on the circuit. He was one of eight children and suffered through a terrible childhood. In spite of that, he became an accomplished guitar player whose finger picking was legendary. He first performed at Caffe Lena in July of 1960 and just like Dave Van Ronk, many more times over the following years.

He lived in Durham, North Carolina, then moved to Harlem with his second wife, becoming a minister at Missionary Baptist Connection Church. He taught music in New York City and was a mentor to Dave Van Ronk and none other than Bob Dylan.

He died of a heart attack while traveling to a performance in 1972.

Rosalie Sorrels, known as a quintessential folk music troubadour, stood out as a strong female folk singer and songwriter of the 60’s. She first performed at Caffe Lena in July of 1966. Despite never earning more than $20,000 a year, she drove across the country from gig to gig with her five children in tow. She made friends easily, so there was always a safe place for her and the children

to stay. In Saratoga Springs, Lena made sure of that. Much to the amazement of many fellow folksingers, Rosalie could drink any man under the table, then be the first one up the next morning making breakfast. She also performed at Woodstock.

Rosalie last performed at Caffe Lena in 2009 at the age of 75. She died in 2017.

Despite so many loyal and celebrated musicians performing night after night, Lena struggled to stay open. Caffe Lena was shut down once for a few months due to code violations. She held a benefit to raise money, and the proceeds, combined with the support of some of her patrons, enabled her to reopen. Unfortunately, in the early 80’s, folk music was experiencing a commercial slump, which negatively affected Lena’s business. She eventually

moved out of her apartment into a room in the Caffe to save money and keep it running. Tragically, in 1989, Lena fell down the stairs and died from her injuries six weeks later.

For performers and patrons alike, losing Lena was like losing a member of their own family and the possibility of the Caffe closing was like losing the family home. A group of townspeople, entertainment industry supporters, volunteers, and Caffe regulars came together to figure out how to save Caffe Lena, now a beloved landmark.

They formed a 501(c)3 nonprofit to revive the faltering business and kept it running through donations, grants, and concert revenue for the next several years.

A recently formed nonprofit was looking for a full or part time Executive Director.

She sent in her resume and got a call back for an interview. It turned out the job was with Caffe Lena, the famous folk music club she had heard so much about.

Meanwhile, Sarah Craig had graduated from the University of Vermont. She went on to volunteer at Burlington City Hall for Mayor Bernie Sanders; then became a Vista volunteer in Boston, followed by a full time stint at Peace Action, an anti-nuclear organization for four years. During this time her Mom’s untimely death rocked her world, forcing Sarah to take stock of her life and decide what she really wanted to do. She discovered that the front lines were not for her. She eventually married and moved to upstate New York.

Her first meeting with the search committee was more of a conversation than an interview, and it felt right. Despite her lack of experience in the music industry, her grant writing and fundraising experience, in addition to her grassroots organizing skills, qualified her for the job. Sarah was offered a half time position a couple of days later and accepted immediately. That was 25 years ago, and she continues to serve as Executive Director to this day.

Over the years, Sarah and the Board of Directors have built a solid foundation for Caffe Lena.

When the building’s landlord wanted to sell and retire, she gave the organization a year to raise the money to buy it. A major capital campaign was begun; and incredibly, the small, struggling nonprofit raised enough money to buy its home of 38 years along with a much needed adjacent parking lot. Business blossomed over the next dozen years as Americana music came back in vogue.

In 2016 it was time to renovate the historic building. Following a much larger fundraising effort and the sale of the parking lot, the venue underwent a complete overhaul. During this period, Caffe Lena’s entertainment schedule never missed a beat. The performances were held at a number of different venues throughout Saratoga Springs.

On December 30, 2016 the new and improved Caffe Lena was unveiled to the delight of every entertainer, resident, and tourist.

Among the many improvements made were the installation of a world class sound system, an expanded performance space and stage, an elevator, and much improved backstage amenities for the performers. On the walls in the listening room are three fabulous light box murals created and installed by artist, Andrew Benincasa that convey the story of American roots music as it has flowed through Caffe Lena. Sofas, coffee tables, chairs, and bistro tables provide new and comfortable accommodations for the patrons.

There is a light menu of snacks, desserts, coffee, beer and wine to enjoy, with table service provided by volunteers. It is a pleasant and informal setting conducive to making new friends as well as having a uniquely intimate live music experience.

Today the entertainment lineup includes a mix of folksingers, poets, performance artists, acapella groups, blue grass and jazz musicians, songwriters, theatre groups, and vocalists. In addition, there are regular open mic nights, Skidmore college nights, and book readings. Cormac McCarthy, Livingston Taylor, Elizabeth Von Trapp, AJ Croce, and Jeff Daniels and his band have appeared more recently

at Caffe Lena. Sarah is always open to new and interesting performers who understand what is expected and are enthusiastic about the opportunity, and she encourages aspiring acts from schools and colleges such as Berkeley College of Music, Skidmore, and New England Conservatory to apply.

In addition to their daily performance schedule, Caffe Lena has reached out to the community at-large in a number of ways to give back.

The Caffe Lena On-the-Road program provides entertainment to nursing homes and senior facilities, homeless shelters, and schools at no cost to the venue. Their outreach also extends to classes, workshops, and opportunities for the public and aspiring musicians to learn their craft. The Kevin and Claudia Bright New Music Series, Stewart’s Little Folks Series, The Nordlys Global Voices Series, and Pride Night are just a few of the innovative programs currently offered by Caffe Lena.

As the venue embarks upon its 60th anniversary year, there is just a little more excitement than usual in the air. In October, a new documentary covering the birth and growth of Caffe Lena, its performers, and Lena herself, was released to the public following a hardcover book and CD set that came out in 2013. Thankfully, these new releases, plus many historic photos, videos, and documents saved over the years, are now housed at the Library of Congress for safekeeping.

And now there’s more to celebrate! In the last year the venue has been named Capital Region’s Best Small Venue and People’s Choice Best Capital Region Venue of any size.

Plus, a number of acts and musicians on the

Caffe Lena roster are up for Grammys this year. The nominations are: Amethyst Kiah –Best American Roots Song; Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen – Best Bluegrass Album; Jontavious Willis – Best Traditional Blues Album; Che Apalache –Best Folk Album; Hadestown/Anais Mitchell – Best Musical Theater Album; Fred Hersch – Best Instrumental Composition; Cyrille Aimee and Diego Figueiredo – Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals. The winners will be announced in January 2020.

According to Sarah, “At Caffe Lena there is nobody universally recognized like Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber. “That may be true, but who you see and what you hear is pure and authentic, in keeping with Lena Spencer’s vision. Given Sarah’s and the board’s commitment to preserving and expanding her legacy, that should be the case for many generations to come.

Luxury with an Adirondack Vibe Retreat to Whiteface Lodge

I

heard the crunch of my winter boots in the woodland stillness this snowy day, the first time I walked under the wooden arches leading to the entrance of the rustic lobby of the Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid. After a breezy welcoming check-in, I explored the outdoor pool. Even with six inches of snow on the ground, this was no polar bear plunge. I could see the steam rising over the heated pool and could barely spot my husband who was within yelling distance. Hot tub bathers braved the elements, leaving their ski caps on as they relaxed after a long day on the slopes of nearby Whiteface Mountain. Or they may have spent the day basking in boredom enjoying the view of the High Peaks from their suite balconies.

When swimmers tire of the

outdoor pool, they can swim to the indoor pool, which is connected via a small alcove. There is plenty of time for stargazing too as the pool is open until 10pm.

Visionary Joe Barile, an Olympian luger, built the original Whiteface Lodge in 2005, selling individual rooms to outdoor enthusiasts looking to invest in an Adirondack getaway. The property has changed hands a few times since its inception, and now half of the units are o w n e d a n d t h e o t h e r h a l f a re m aintained by Urgo Hotel and Resorts as one to three bedroom suites for vacationers.

General Manager, Shawn Goodway, a former Saratoga Springs resident, worked as the general manager at the

Gideon Putnam Hotel & Resorts for twenty years before taking on this position in 2016. He sometimes sees guests arrive as early as noon to make use of the onsite amenities. Besides the pools, there are three hot tubs, an ice skating rink, a salon, a spa, and a 56-seat surround sound movie theater with daily showings at 1pm. Visitors who want to relax before the 4pm check-in, can sink into one of the many plush chairs and enjoy free coffee, tea, and treats and people watch or look out at the stunning Adirondack view.

When he first started working at the Whiteface Lodge, Goodway recalls witnessing first impressions of the rooms while he was walking down the hall. “I just saw some guests open up their room, and their first reaction was ‘Oh, wow!’ and I have to say it was my reaction too. Having worked and lived in Saratoga Springs for all that time and then come up to Lake Placid, it had to be a special property and ownership,” says Goodway. As one of the most popular Lake Placid wedding venues, many weekends the Whiteface Lodge has wedding guests, but there are also adult getaways, family reunions, and friend getaways, many of whom take advantage of the spa and explore downtown Lake Placid.

With so many romantic Instagram-able photo opportunities, planned or surprise romantic gestures have been known to happen. “I have never witnessed it, but guests tell me that they got engaged here so that’s why they are coming back to get married here,” says Goodway.

Like many guests who stay at Whiteface Lodge, I indulged in a treatment when I was there with an 80 minute Purifying Lodge Body Retreat, a signature treatment at the spa - a combination of a clay wrap body mask and a grapefruit infused oil - followed

by a short hot stone massage at the end. I can vouch that your winter skin will be left feeling refreshed and ageless afterwards, even though it will look like you are shedding alien green skin when you rinse off. Guests can also check out their daily calendar for wellness events such as fireside yoga.

Whiteface Lodge renovated their hair salon last April, under the guidance of Michelle Hogan, the former owner of Elements Hair Salon in Lake Placid, which had a loyal following before it closed. “The resort salon had more of a lodge-y look, and she

had a vision, so we exposed the white tiling on the wall and added new chairs and new shampoo stations to what she thought would be more conducive to her business, plus a line of Aveda products,” says Goodway.

During my stays at the Whiteface Lodge, the staff has always gone out of their way to make me feel comfortable, whether it’s answering my questions about a spa treatment, or letting my daughter have second helpings of sprinkles at the ice cream bar. “Most of them are local. It’s sort of the way people

During the busy summer season, the resort staff has help from J1 Visa workers; but when they leave, it’s all hands on deck, including his own helping hands where he can multi-task and assist housekeepers in a pinch.

Guests can check out the downtown Lake Placid scene: shops, boutiques, bistros, art galleries, and The Lake Placid Olympic Museum for a dose of 1980s Olympic nostalgia. The Whiteface Lodge offers complimentary shuttle service until 6pm. After 6pm guests can use their BMW car service, which includes two SUVs and a sedan.

Breakfast, which is typically included in the rate, comes with a stainless steel carafe of coffee. Since my visit, the second restaurant was renamed Peak 47 and renovated. “We named it 47 after the 46 peaks that you climb; this would be 47, a fun way of looking at it,” says Goodway. At Peak 47 you can select from a variety of farm to table options, including wood fired pizza, a charcuterie board, or a Lodge Burger. If you prefer to eat inside your suite, there is 24-hour room service. There is also a Price Chopper nearby where you can go grocery shopping and stock your in-suite kitchen. “Many of the two and three bedroom suites are a bit different from each other, but they all have that same great lodge vibe, which makes it special. It’s like a home away from home. For the guests who are new, it’s a wild experience because it’s all here. We’ve got a fantastic fitness center and the spa,” says Goodway.

The snowstorms can be epic and unpredictable. He remembers one storm in particular where he had to clear off over a foot of snow from his car every few hours. “I don’t mind the snow and the cold. I’m from Saratoga. It’s just a little bit more extreme up here. Saratoga weather on steroids.”

Why not embrace the wicked winter, connect with your inner Olympic athlete in Lake Placid, and go for a bobsled ride at the Olympic Sports Complex; or dog sledding, ice skating, snowshoeing, and ice skating before relaxing by your suite’s gas fireplace with a hot drink. Getting to Whiteface Lodge by car takes about two hours, or you can take a three hour train ride on Amtrak, as I did, to the village of Westport, New York, where a friendly driver will transport you to Whiteface Lodge.

Playing with the Old Bones of New York The Genius Behind Handmade Kelly Guitars

Half a century ago, a high school student in Bayshore, Long Island built a ukulele out of an old cigar box. It was a fun project and garnered a good bit of attention. His classmates may have thought it a lark, but to the young student it was the start of a long and successful career that would be one of designing, sculpting, and building guitars one at a time, each custom made and each built by hand.

Fifty-plus years later, Rick Kelly is still making guitars, although this time the cigar boxes are used for holding his fees for doing so.

Handmade Kelly Guitars start at about $3000 and go upward from there. “I never did anything else,” Kelly says matter-of-factly. “It’s been my whole world,” adds the artist who clearly enjoys what he does every day of his life.

The luthier, who was born in Queens, grew up in Long Island, and now has a thriving business right in the heart of the West Village in Manhattan called Carmine Street Guitars, or Kelly Guitars, since his name has become so well known in the field. Professional musicians indeed know the name of the man and his work, others may not, but simply appreciate the artistry. This doesn’t seem to matter much to

Kelly, so long as he can continue to create the vessels.

“There was no internet when I started,” Kelly says, “so I went to the Maryland Institute College of Art.” MICA is considered a premier institution, one of the Top 10 nationwide, and Rick knew he had to be there. Ambition prevailed, motivating and empowering him to pay his tuition by making Appalachian dulcimers, a fretted string instrument that is related to the zither family. They typically have three to four strings and were originally played in the Appalachian region of the United States by musicians who could not afford the materials needed to build a violin.

In the early stages of his career, Kelly participated in many craft fairs, both to become known and to make some needed money, and that’s where a scout found him, recognizing his extraordinary talent. Rick then went on to teach for two and a half years at the Smithsonian,

where he served as an instructor in seven different classes, training his students in everything ranging from instrument making, to acoustic guitars and dulcimers.

“I also taught at a community college for a while,” Kelly adds, “but I really wanted to be a sculptor. However, that’s an art for rich kids.

You need a lot of money to get into it.”

So the talented young man began making instruments, constructing them one at a time, incorporating his own sculptural and unique design on each one. “The last five years I’ve added intricate wood carvings on dulcimers.”

That has included designs ranging from American Indians, to a full size Spiderman he created for one client.

All Kelly Guitars are made from 100% reclaimed wood, generally 400 year old white pine timber culled from the old buildings of New York... wood from demolished hotels and speakeasies, wood that is historical in its own right. Kelly has used wood from the Hotel Chelsea, first built in 1884 and holding a place on the National Register of Historic Places. Today’s musicians who are fortunate enough to own a Kelly guitar may well be touching the same timber that was part of a room occupied by the Grateful Dead, Patti Smith, Jim Morrison, or Jimi Hendrix.

They may unknowingly be hefting their instrument, ready to play, and holding a piece of the floor upon which Sid Vicious,

Bette Midler, or Madonna walked as they walked their way to the top. There are even songs written about this storied hotel. Leonard Cohen wrote of his affair there with Janis Joplin while both lived at the hotel. “Chelsea Hotel” and “Chelsea Hotel #2” pays homage to their tryst.

Names like John Steinbeck, Eugene O’Neill, William Faulkner, Edna St. Vincent Millay, all raised their glasses at Chumley’s, along with members of the “Lost Generation” of the ‘20s and the more well known “Beat Generation” of the ‘50s.

“I call it building my guitars from the old bones of New York,” Kelly adds, noting that when buildings dating back to the 1800s were demolished or the wood replaced, he was right there to scoop up the old materials. Painstakingly, Rick then removes all the old, rusted nails which is a time consuming and monumental job, but in the end he is left with wood that, “allows you to hear the difference in the playing of the instrument. You can hear it and tell it over a factory made guitar.”

So from the bones that fashioned legendary old bars and hotels, comes a magnificent instrument with a unique, world class sound.

Rick’s artistry has brought the likes of Patti Smith, Lenny K, Lou Reed, and Bob Dylan to the shop in the West Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan.

Each is custom designed and handmade with the assistance of CAD (computer aided design). Rick uses a screwed on template and hand files all his instruments. The knots, cracks, and imperfections that remain from the old wood give each piece a different character.

Kelly does not try to remove them, rather he incorporates them into the construct and design of the piece. There are obvious distinct advantages between factory made guitars and the instruments Rick Kelly makes by hand. First and foremost, handmade guitars are not manufactured goods – not mass-produced - so each one is different. While factory guitars are made in large numbers according to strict specifications, a handmade instrument offers you choice: differing scale lengths, neck widths and

contours, fret sizes, string spacings, tunings, electronics, body shapes... each is individual, and that’s what you’re paying for and why the sound is so superior. Kelly guitars are making music all over the world, and Rick now has a two year wait for one of his creations.

Wherever there is music, there may be the sound of a classical guitar or acoustic instrument lovingly handcrafted by Rick Kelly.

When a soloist in a San Francisco coffee house picks up his instrument and begins to strum, he may be holding a part of a room from the old Chelsea Hotel some 3000 miles away. When the band takes the stage in Miami, one of their musicians may reach down and unknowingly pick up a piece of Chumley’s speakeasy from which his notes will emanate this evening; but the history behind the instrument making the sound will, no doubt, remain untold.

It’s amazing, is it not, what uses you can find for an old cigar box?

In 1986, My husband Russ and I, along with the kids, were on our way to purchase some beef cows at a neighboring farm. At that farm they also happened to have baby goats. Our son, Robert was 6 at the time, our daughter Karen was 10, and our daughter Kelly was 12, and Robert ended up falling in love with this one goat. We asked the woman if the goat was for sale, and she said “yes for $20,” so we bought that baby goat. Her ears were like The Flying Nun (the TV program with Sally Field), so that goat became known as “Flying Nun.”

We built a little shed for her in a fenced area. A couple of days later Russ was looking out the kitchen window, and he said, “ that goat looks lonely. We should get another one,” so we did. The second one was called “Bubble Gum” because Robert had lost his bubble gum on the goat's hair. By1987 our farm grew to 130 dairy goats, and we were shipping all the milk we produced to another cheese plant.

In 1994 we decided to become a cheese processing plant ourselves so we got in touch with Cornell University in Ithaca, New York,

approached them, and asked one of the professors if he could actually help us develop a type of goat cheese that was similar to a cream cheese. Thus we actually started making our goat cheese at Cornell and did so for three months, just enough time to have our plant built at the farm.

We then became a processing plant producing Grade A goat milk and cheese, we also have a raw milk license. Goat milk and goat cheese wasn't as popular as it is today, so in the beginning it was quite a struggle. Becoming a goat dairy was something that we wanted to do, so we managed to continue and increase sales by listening to what the customers wanted. For instance, we started out with just quarts of goat milk; however, many of the customers wanted half gallons and also gallons which helped increase our milk sales. We made soft goat cheese with a very mild taste. One of the most important features about our cheese is that it's all natural with only four ingredients: goat milk, cheese culture, rennet, and salt. We now also produce goat milk keďŹ r, yogurt, fudge, crumbled feta, and fruit avored cheese dips.

We have won New York State gold medals for our various assorted herb cheeses, such as cinnamon cranberry, rosemary garlic, Italian herb and garlic, Herbs de Provence, and plain feta. This year, our

new cheeses were cilantro and lime and also a garlic jalapeno, which won great reviews from the customers.

Since it was organized 11 years ago, we also have been members of the Finger Lakes Cheese Alliance. The Cheese Alliance is a great way to introduce our farm and cheese products, and the last Saturday in July is the Finger Lakes Cheese Festival where we love handing out samples for people to try. July of 2020 will be our 10th year participating as a vendor in the Finger Lakes Wine Festival in Watkins Glen, New York with our goat cheese.

Our cheese is sold in health food stores, Green Star Co-Op Ithaca NY, Down to Earth Whole Foods in Endicott NY, and Old Barn Market in Binghamton NY. We also participate in many area farmers markets, as well as distribute to local grocery stores.

As a family operated goat dairy we are committed to maintaining premium quality handcrafted goat milk products creating a case that is "utterly delicious.� In general, our goats are very social, curious, gentle, independent, and intelligent creatures that love to huddle and cuddle, so come visit us!

Life Was Better in Black and White

I was a child of TV. From the time I was about four and we got our first television, I think it was a Dumont - an enormous piece of furniture with doors on it and a tiny, tiny screen, I was hooked.

Each time my father or mother clicked it on, my impatience quickly rose to the fore waiting for the mahogany behemoth with the black and white screen to “warm up” and show me Captain Video and the Video Rangers, The Lone Ranger, and eventually, The Mickey Mouse Club.

Yes, I was a child of TV. True, it had only seven channels and rudimentary production techniques, but I was witness to some of the best acting in television history and stories that were well written, beautifully directed, and left a lasting impression. Studio One, Playhouse 90, Climax, all performed live with actors who were professional enough to not make a mistake... and knew how to cover if they did, working with scripts written by some of the giants in broadcast history. We had CBS, NBC, and ABC, then there were four New York based channels that had everything from women’s roller derby every Saturday to Picture for a Sunday Afternoon, which showed wonderful weekend movies with great plots, memorable performances, and usually a theme song that would eventually become an Oscar contender for Best Song.

I was indeed a child of TV, but today, decades later, I am most definitely not an adult of TV. Today I prefer live radio broadcasts, especially talk radio, well written newspaper articles, and magazines with compelling, intelligent content. Those seven channels to which I clung religiously have now morphed into hundreds of innocuous offerings with everything from programs about storage lockers to shows about strange addictions, to news channels whose sources are often questionable and whose reporting is often sensational, to the vacuous, talentless reality shows doing absolutely nothing and still attracting an audience.

Uncle Walter is gone. So is Mike Wallace and Ed Bradley and the crew we grew to respect.

Howdy Doody is in a museum in Detroit, and Buffalo Bob is dead. Now reality television has taken its place, and people are drawn to watching unfortunate things happen to unfortunate other people.

When I was a child and home sick from school, I dearly loved watching Queen for a Day, hosted by Jack Bailey, a seedy looking guy who looked like he hated his job. That might have been the precursor to reality shows because it featured three women telling gut wrenching stories about their lives.

Bailey would begin each show by shouting, “Would YOU like to be Queen for a Day?” Then the contestants would go on and on about how their roof leaked, their husband left, their children all had post nasal drip and walked with a limp, there was no money, little food, but the only thing they wanted was a new washing machine for their church. The more the women wailed, the more I was drawn in...but I was only eight. The saddest story always won, based on an audience applause meter, and Bailey would put a crown on the winner’s head, drape her with a luxurious red robe, and then she’d be escorted to the throne, with roses and prizes along the way. An Almay makeup kit, silver plated flatware, a coffee pot... whatever sponsors they had that they could squeeze.

Then there was Lassie, which always made me cry because I loved happy endings, and no matter what danger Jeff or Timmy was in, that beautiful collie always managed to pull it out. I never missed Rin Tin Tin, Flicka, Fury, The Lone Ranger, The Cisco Kid, The Twilight Zone, Superman, The Millionaire, and an endless variety of sitcoms from I Love Lucy to the lesser known, I Married Joan. There was a whole host of variety shows: Milton Berle and Dinah Shore, The Ed Sullivan Show, Your Hit Parade; and game shows like I’ve Got a Secret, What’s My Line, the Big Payoff, and Beat the Clock.

Chances are as you read this, you may be wondering why I didn’t mention your favorite; but it’s difficult to list them all in such a small space; however Roy Rogers and Jack Benny and Bishop Fulton Sheen and Wagon Train and The Loretta Young Show still play within the cobwebs of my mind. It was indeed a simpler time, but it was honest, real, and had a quality programming often lacks today. Yes, we had TVs that took forever to warm up and tiny screens and no cable or live streaming, but it was good, clean entertainment, and we loved it.

Life was better in black and white.

The Winery That Never Sleeps

Come the third week of winter, the bustling vacation village of Lake George, New York has completed its transformation from summer resort town to winter wonderland.

On particularly cold days, you might see a handful of cars driving along its main drag, called Canada Street; or if you’re particularly lucky, a line of three ATVs zip across the frozen Lake George, which is affectionately known to many as the “Queen of American Lakes.”

What you might not see are the thousands of summer visitors who have vacationed in the area since they were children and now bring the next generation of Lake George lovers to the beachside community in the foothills of the Adirondacks every summer. That’s because outside of the annual Winter Carnival in February (when Lake George springs back to life on the weekends with polar plunges, helicopter rides, c hi l i cookoffs, and the always entertaining outhouse races), Lake George appreciates its winters as a time to recharge from the busy summer season and prepare for the one ahead.

At Adirondack Winery, located on Canada Street across from the popular Shepard Park, the winter months aren’t quite as busy as the summer, but that doesn’t stop their staff from looking for new and interesting ways to draw wine lovers - and what they “call wine learners” – to the area and their Tasting Room.

Last February, the Winery launched its “Love Is Blind” Valentine’s Day promotion, where guests sampled eight wines disguised in burlap bags and then guessed which wines they tasted from a menu of choices, all for a chance to win prizes. In March, when Lake George is typically still frozen over, their St Patrick’s Day Weekend “Pot of Gold” event gave guests the opportunity to try their luck by pulling a golden ticket out of a pot of gold coins for a chance to win a free case of wine! All that, on top of being able to taste at least seven of their more than 30 fruit-infused and traditional varietal wines, handcrafted and promoted by a husband and wife team, Sasha and Mike Pardy. Their Lake George Tasting Room is also full of winter wine accessories like mulled wine spices and cute wine glass sweaters.

The Pardys started Adirondack Winery 11 years ago with dreams of making standout wines for every palate and every level of interest, from casual wine drinkers, to those with sophisticated taste buds. In order to do that, the team at Adirondack Winery takes

full advantage of its winter months. This includes everyone from the Tasting Room staff to the winemakers.

With harvest season well in the rear view mirror, Winemaking Assistant, Brad Casacci, spends the winter months carefully racking wine from one barrel or tank to another. It’s a time-consuming process, but a necessary one that helps cleanse the wine of leftover grape skins and yeast. Aging also occurs in the winter, and Casacci also takes the off-season to perform a sensory analysis of dry wines to evaluate how they taste, smell, look, and more.

Adirondack Winery’s winemakers also utilize the winter months to conduct a cold stabilization on each of their white wines and some of their red wines for at least two weeks each. “We like to do it naturally,” Casacci said, “and with the cold climate of the Adirondacks, that makes it easy for us. We bring them outside.” If the weather isn’t cold enough, or too cold for extended periods of time, the winery is able to cold stabilize inside, using what’s called a glycol chiller.

The winery also uses the winter to blend their selection of more than 15 fruit-infused wines, like their blackberry infused Amethyst Sunset, mixed berry infused Berry Breeze, and their top-selling Soaring Strawberry.

Bottling will also likely begin in January after a three month hiatus.

The schedule is dependent upon the filtering timeline, and the staff will likely bottle one to two times per week, depending on which wines are ready.

“It might surprise some people, but winemaking is really a year-round process,” Casacci said. Especially when you care about what you do.

And while the village of Lake George changes come winter, the love and care the Adirondack Winery staff puts in to creating remarkable wines and unforgettable tasting room experiences, stays the same all year.
