NOTE:
“Echo of the Past” draws its inspiration from a powerful quote by Victor Hugo in L’Homme qui rit (1869): “What is history? An echo of the past in the future; a reflection of the future on the past.” (Qu’est l’histoire? Un écho du passé dans l’avenir. Un reflet de l’avenir sur le passé.) This profound statement suggests that history is not a fixed, linear sequence of events, but rather a dynamic, reciprocal relationship — a conversation between what has been and what is yet to come. Our understanding of the past is never static. The past is evolving as we look back with new insights through the lens of the present, and the future continually reshapes the way we interpret and learn from history. This theme felt especially fitting for a composition in dialogue with Harmoniemusik, reflecting on how music from the past continues to resonate and shape the future.
“Echo of the Past” was commissioned as part of the Women in Harmoniemusik consortium led by Rose Craig Tyler and LADYBAND Minneapolis.
