INSPIRATION

carnival comes to town A sunny day celebration calls for all things fun and festive – and this immediately conjures up days spent at a Carnival or the Circus. With this in mind our Easter breakfast for families is inspired by typical Easter bunny motifs but with the addition of carnival candy pastel colours. Gingham and seersucker stripes create a striking backdrop with the table linen and tableware and the printables bring the Easter bunnies and florals to the town.

INVITATION

MATERIALS Colour Printer 160gsm or thicker A4 White Paper Scissors Black Fineliner Pen Twine Washi Tape Toothpick C5 Envelopes DIRECTIONS 1.

Print the printable note card on white printer paper.

2.

Cut out the invitation and pen in the party details.

3.

To make baby bunting: cut strips of washi tape 3cm in length.

4.

Fold half over the twine and stick together.

5.

With scissors, cut a swallowtail to finish off the ends. repeat four more times, spacing the washi tape flags 1cm apart.

6.

Tie a knot at one end, and thread the other end through a small hole pierced through the invitation using a toothpick.

7.

Tie a knot at the end on the underside of the card. Fasten with washi tape.

8.

Place the invitation in an envelope, seal and address accordingly.

flags on a string The great thing about making bunting in pastel or neutral colours is that you now have a great addition to your “party closet”. The banner can be used for your annual Easter celebrations, a birthday party, garden party even a baby shower. Or after the party, don’t pack it away but use the bunting to decorate a bedroom, child's playroom or nursery.

MATERIALS Printable Party Swallowtail Bunting Pennant Template Cotton Fabric: plain, polka dots, stars or stripe patterns Pins Pinking Shears Sewing Machine Twine Threading Needle Note: A piece of fabric 1m x 1.5m will make 28 pennants. Stringing approximately 4/5 pennants per metre will result in a total of 6 metres of bunting.

DIRECTIONS 1.

Fold the fabric, wrong sides together, so that the width is the height of the bunting flag template.

2.

Lay the template at one end so that the top of the flag is placed on the fold of the fabric and pin to the fabric.

3.

Cut around the template using pinking shears.

4.

Repeat all the way along the fold to the other end.

5.

Repeat steps 1 to 4 until the width of the fabric is no longer sufficient to accommodate the height of the pennant flag.

6.

For each cut flag, turn out so that right sides are facing up. Iron flat.

7.

Sew a 1cm seam along the top of the pennant flag. Trim off cotton ends.

8.

Thread twine through a needle and tie a loose knot.

9.

Thread the twine through the hem of each pennant in the order you would like the pennants to hang.

Be sure to leave 30cm of twine at either end for easy hanging. * good idea If you don’t have a sewing machine, do steps 1-4, and simply peg or glue the fabric together (instead of step 6 and 7), and then finish the bunting by doing steps 8 and 9.

Attach balloons to decorating strip: push the end of each balloon through the hole to attach, leave 20cm or so at the beginning of the strip and end of the strip (to attach it to the wall easier).

Keep adding balloons, as long as you want. Be sure to leave out about 5-10 of the smaller balloons for filling in gaps.

FOR HANGING IT UP: Put command hooks (or nails) on the wall where you want your balloon garland to hang. Attach the balloon garland to the wall.

Fill in holes by attaching balloons with glue dots. (Put one glue dot near the knot. Attach this toward the inside of balloon so you won’t see the knot sticking out.) Next, put another glue dot on the balloon you just attached and connect it to another balloon. This will ensure it does not fall down.

MATERIALS Two glass vases: one large and wide and the other small enough to fit inside with plenty of room around it.

Fill the smaller of the two vases with water and place it in the centre of the larger vase.

2.

Arrange the decorated eggs around the perimeter of the smaller vase until they fill it to the top. For an ombre/rainbow look, first sort eggs by colour and then arrange same colour eggs together layer by layer.

3.

Clean the flower stems. Snip all leaves from stems and trim the bottom a few centimetres on a diagonal.

4.

Arrange the blooms by gathering the stems first in your hand, playing with placement, size, and stem length.

Place small glass or glass bottle inside, fill with water.

3.

Trim flowers so that they just pop over the edge of the box.

Fill the ice cream sundae glass with water.

Trim flowers so that they just pop over the edge of the glass.

Place the red flower in the centre slightly raised above the other flowers.

4.

Pop in two straws, so they stick out from other side.

MATERIALS Egg Cups Watercress Seeds (1 teaspoon per egg required) Cotton Wool Balls (1 per egg) Googly Eyes FLYING TIGER Felt Tip Pens/Acrylic Paints DIRECTIONS 1.

Carefully remove the tops from the eggs, leaving the bottom two-thirds of the shells intact.

2.

Empty the shells (save the eggs for the meal), then carefully wash them out.

3.

Decorate the egg cups with googly eyes and/or pens or paint, then leave them to dry.

4.

Dip the cotton wool balls in a little water, squeezing off any excess.

5.

Place 1 ball inside each egg cup, then sprinkle 1 teaspoon watercress seeds onto each one.

6.

Leave the filled eggcups in a dry, well-lit place for a week – a windowsill is perfect.

7.

The cress will start to grow within a few days. * a good idea Instead of using ceramic egg cups, use empty egg shells. When breaking your eggs try to crack them near the narrower top of the egg so that you end up with a decent amount of the egg shell left to do your planting in.

Wash the egg shells out with warm water (you do bot want any rotten egg mouldering away under your cress) and then dry your shells. Stand them in egg cups or back into the carton egg box ready for filling.

Use the watercress for making egg and watercress sandwiches.

MATERIALS Plain Fabric (we used white but natural is fine for a more rustic look) Scissors Acrylic Fabric Paints/Pens (opt for acrylic to prevent rubbing off or peeling) Paint Brushes DIRECTIONS 1.

Cut your fabric to size: Placemats 45 x 30cm Napkins 45 x 45cm Runner 45 x 150cm Tablecloth 4-6 seater = 140 x 180cm 6-8 seater = 140 x 240cm 8-10 seater = 140 x 320cm Square 4-seater = 140 x 140cm 2.

Plan your patterns, designs and colours. You can use a pencil to lightly sketch out your designs on the fabric before painting if you wish.

Start painting, the charm lies in the freehand nature of the stripes.

Likewise alternating the thickness of the stripes and tones of the same coloured paint.

Leave your fabric to dry thoroughly.

When fully dry, bake plates in the oven to seal the paint and make it permanent. Place the plates in a cold oven (to avoid cracking).

BACKGROUND Behind your buffet table is often the most overlooked element and yet it can totally make or break the table, especially in the photos. Possibly you are lucky and the party area already has pretty wallpaper or perfectly placed pictures. if not, opt for a blank wall and decorate with: a printed custom canvas/poster, a wall of ribbon, paper daisies/rosettes, bunting or removable wall stickers, OVERHEAD The most exciting part of the table is often the decorations that “frame” the table from above. first and foremost, assess whether your venue allows for the fastening of items from above. if successful, consider options like Chinese paper lanterns, tissue paper pom poms and paper daisies.

TABLE A weathered wooden or colourful trestle table can be left bare. or opt for a floor-length tablecloth and patterned runners. do measure your table beforehand so as to ensure a good fit; and importantly, assist with spacing out the items that will sit on the table.

VARIATIONS OF HEIGHT Whilst an obvious tip, be sure that your tall items are placed at the back of your table and the smallest ones at the front. height is created by covering polystyrene cubes in wrapping paper. For easy options, look out for pre-covered gift boxes, nesting suitcases and overturned wooden crates.

VESSELS Glass jars, metal buckets, overturned hats, ceramic- or glass-footed compotes and bowls are needed to hold the sweet treats, particularly loose candy. opt for items in clear glass or white; thereby forming a neutral base to show off the sweets and start a collection that can be used for future tables.

PLATTERS White ceramic platters or plates will display standalone treats like cupcakes and cookies. for a crafty idea use mirrors or glass frames and fasten small knobs at each corner for feet. these not only elevate the goodies off the table but allow for one to cut down on the surface area needed to be filled with treats.

BAKED GOODIES Favourites to include are iced cupcakes, cake pops, iced cookies and macaroons.

NO-BAKE GOODIES Jellies and mousses are best made and displayed in small glass jars or shooter glasses, complete with teaspoons tied on with twine. Pretzels dipped in chocolate, candy floss and flavoured popcorn are easy-to-add treats.

CANDY Sweets, marshmallows, lollipops, liquorice, dragée almonds, chocolate bars, mints, gumballs... Sweets are a costly element to the table, as even a small jar requires a lot of candy. therefore, consider using small-footed glass jars with pretty lids and decorate the tops with ribbon bows.

EGG AND SPOON RACES Participants must each balance an egg upon a spoon and race with it to the finishing line. Competitors can race either individually or in teams in a relay race. If the egg falls from the spoon then competitors must stop, retrieve, and reposition their egg; or to start again; or may even be disqualified. For an extra challenge, contestants might carry the spoon with both hands, with their teeth, or have their hands tied behind their back.

EGG TOSS Divide players into pairs and each pair gets one egg. All teams begin by standing an equal distance apart. One person begins by tossing the egg to the other teammate. If the teammate catches the egg successfully, they both take a step back and the game continues. If the egg is dropped, but not broken, the teammate may pick it up and throw it back. Begin by laying the paper bags flat and marking (on the backs of each bag) in pencil a M-shape.

After cutting the bags along the M line to create ears, you will glue a pom pom to the front of each bag.

Fill the bags up with chocolate eggs or other sweet treats.

Print, cut out and thread with twine the printable favour tags.

Gather the tops and fasten closed with the tagged twine.

MAKES 18 SPOONS MATERIALS 18 melamine/bamboo Tablespoons for gifting 1 cup milk Chocolate Chips 1 large Baking Tray Wax Paper to fit baking tray 1 heat-proof Measuring Cup 1 teaspoon Butter (optional) Speckled Chocolate Eggs Clear Cellophane Ribbon METHOD 1.

Cover baking trays with wax paper.

Place the cup of chocolate chips in a heat-proof measuring cup. Microwave chocolate chips at 50% power for 1 minute. Remove cup and stir. Continue microwaving at 50% power, stirring every 30 seconds, until chocolate is melted and smooth. Do not over-heat chocolate. To thin chocolate, add butter and stir gently.

3.

If the chocolate in the cup thickens, return to the microwave for 30 seconds at 50% power, stir gently.

4.

Dip plastic spoons in melted chocolate to cover the bowl of the spoon. Remove excess chocolate by tapping tip gently against the inside of the measuring cup.

5.

Push speckled chocolate eggs into melted chocolate.

Cool spoons thoroughly before wrapping individually with cellophane and ribbon. * a good idea Use dark chocolate for grown-up favours for a more sophisticated taste and appeal.
