INSPIRATION

bottom of the garden For this Spring tablescape theme, an all neutral base was selected. Think browns, creams and whites and all natural materials: wood, ceramics and wire. The advantage being that you most likely have most of the table linen and tableware already on hand. Once having created a warm neutral base, by adding just a few motifs, you can swap out your theme for many occasions during the Spring season: bunnies and vegetables changes to bees and daisies; chickens and eggs or butterflies and blooms.

rabbit & cabbage invite* Inspired by Thornback and Peel’s original Rabbit & Cabbage print, we created a printable collection featuring vintage illustrations: conjuring up the chocolatey brown and vivid green of the vegetable patch, the lazy buzzing of insects on a sunny afternoon, and the delights of a country garden.

Print out both the note card and the patterned paper sheets.

2.

Cut out the note cards and write in the details of your lunch/party on the note card.

3.

Trace around an envelope on the patterned sheets. Cut out and slot the pattenred paper into the envelope as a liner. Glue the flap to the inside of the envelope.

4.

Slot the notecard into the envelope and address.

wire word sign Welcome a new season and guests into your home with this simple DIY. Print out your word of choice, guide wire along the curves and loops and decorate or wrap in a material of your choosing.

Print out WELCOME sign template. Or type the word or phrase you want to turn into a wire sign, apply a font, adjust the size, and print it out. Use a script font that has a consistent line thickness for best results.

2.

Line up the printed sheets of paper, tape them together, then tape the whole thing to your table.

3.

Starting from the left-hand side, guide the wire along your sign template.

4.

For sharp bends, use the pliers to squeeze the wire into a point (or with your fingers).

5.

For some letters, you will need to double the wire back. Simply use the pliers again to squeeze a tight point and guide the wire back along itself. Try to keep the wire as tight to itself as possible (the jute wrapping will take care of any residual space).

6.

When you get to the end of your word, clip the end of the wire with your wire cutters.

WRAP WITH JUTE TWINE 7.

Starting with a dab of hot glue, wrap your wire word tightly with jute string. Get the twine as close to the tip of the wire as you can for a cleaner look. Do this by laying about 2cm of twine down the length of the wire with hot glue — with the end toward the continuation of the letter and the long end of the twine towards the tip — then wrap tightly back onto itself to start the full wrap.

8. When you reach the tip of a letter that does not continuously loop into another, squirt a line of glue along the letter to the tip. Then wrap the twine a bit spaced out to reach the end, and quickly double back with your tight wrapping to continue down the letter while the glue is still sticky. The spaced wrap is to prevent that section from becoming too thick.

9.

Letters that cross over themselves, like the letter “e” benefit from a little reinforcement to hold things steady. Just wrap in an x pattern, once from top to bottom, then once from left to right.

10. To further secure the twine wrapping the wired words, add a small dot of glue at transition points.

11. Continue wrapping to the end of the word, add a dot of glue at the end to secure the word sign, then clip the end of the jute.

Swap out the jute twine for chunky yarn, ribbon or fabric and embellish with small flowers, felt balls or beads.

Hang all year long: for special Spring days add in fresh flowers like stemmed tulips.

all eggs in one basket There is never such a thing as too many eggs. Collect crates, bowls, baskets, boxes, egg trays, egg cups and other containers to decorate the tablescape. Fill with different sizes and shapes of eggs; all in different neutral colours and materials: wooden, ceramic, wire… Add a bit of glitz by lightly painting some eggs with craft glue and roll them in bowls of glitter or gold leaf paper. Remove the outer loose leaves and save those that are not wilted. You wil reattach the leaves to your cabbage with floral pins after you hollow out your cabbage and are ready to add the flowers.

2.

Trim the bottom of your cabbage so it sits level.

3.

Trace around your glass or jar and cut out the centre of your cabbage with a paring knife.

4.

Hollow out your hole thereby allowing you to place the glass or jar inside as a vase to hold your flowers.

5.

Attach outer leaves with floral pins.

6.

Fill the glass with water.

7.

Arrange blooms, strategically place along the outside edge of the glass to conceal the cut edge of the cabbage.

FLOWER ARRANGING TIPS Here are few tips to help extend the life of your flowers in your arrangement: Cut your flower stems at a 45 degree angle for maximum water uptake and remove any leaves below the water line.

Always add the floral preservative packets to your vase water that come with your flowers.

Check your water level to top it off if necessary.

Change your vase water every other day if possible.

Keep your flower arrangement away from heat (like vents blowing) or direct sunlight.

Think carrots (bonus points if the leaves are still intact), leeks and asparagus displayed in glass vases trmmed with twine or ribbon. Add water to the vessels to prolong the life of arrangement.

DIRECTIONS 1.

Whilst no primer paint is needed, still prepare the surface by cleaning it with a warm, soapy dish cloth.

2.

Dry with a clean damp cloth to make sure no cleaner or soap residue is left behind.

3.

Apply the first coat of chalk paint, and leave to dry for 20-30 minutes.

4.

Apply a second coat of paint and leave to dry.

5.

Use a fine grit sandpaper to lightly sand the corners and edges that would naturally get worn with wear. Or rub a damp cloth for a very light distressing.

6.

Apply a thin layer of wax to the whole project, then lightly wipe off any excess wax.

7.

Once the wax has hardened (about 24 hours later), buff the wax to a shiny finish with a lint-free cloth.

a blank canvas This theme is best supported by neutral table linen – that way you can use it over and over again all through the year. A white tablecloth with napkins is always a good first choice; or a soft beige or my favourite “greige”.

If needed, follow the package instructions to condition your clay. Once you have warmed up the clay, make a ball. Then push sides inwards to form an oval shape.

2.

To make a base, push the one side of the egg onto a flat surface.

3.

Cut 10cm of wire and wrap one end around a pencil twice. Stick the other end into the top of the egg. (Remove during baking and painting).

4.

If required, preheat your oven according to the package directions for the clay. Place the eggs on parchment paper on a sheet pan and bake according to instructions.

5.

Wait for eggs to cool, then reinsert wire.

Open up the orange paper napkin, fold into a triangle.

2.

Fold the right side from the bottom corner up toward the center of the napkin. Repeat with the left side.

3.

Fill the napkin cone with candy, tie closed with ribbon/twine.

4.

Fold the green napkin into a triangle. Tuck the ends of the green napkin over the top of the orange cone and tie closed with ribbon. * a good idea Hide candy carrots around the house for little ones to find on Easter morning or set out a harvest basket filled with them for guests to take home as favours.

bunny ears My favourite Easter trick of the trade.

MATERIALS Linen Napkins (50 x 50cm), ironed Hard-boiled Eggs (or rubber eggs) Twine or Ribbon DIRECTIONS 1.

Position the napkin so it looks like a diagonal.

2.

Fold the bottom point of the napkin up to the top point to make a triangle.

3.

Starting with the bottom point, roll up the napkin from the bottom to the top, until the napkin looks like a rope.

4.

Bend the napkin in half.

Make sure the “ears” are the same size.

5.

Nestle a hard boiled egg at the bottom of the “U” of the napkin.

6.

Tie the two sides of the napkin together just above the top of the egg.

7.

Ta-da; a cute bunny! * a good idea Use a pencil to write your guest’s names onto the eggs – now they act as place cards as well!

INGREDIENTS 1 part Carrot Juice 1 part Prosecco Carrot stems or parsley sprigs METHOD 1.

Add carrot juice and Prosecco to a champagne glass.

2.

Garnish with carrot stems or parsley sprigs and serve immediately.

veggie chips & dip Chips and dip is a party classic! This easy to make sour cream and onion dip with just a few ingredients and no cooking involved, is a must. Serve with your favourite chip; or why not try making crispy baked vegetable chips.

SOUR CREAM AND ONION DIP INGREDIENTS 120g Cream Cheese, at room temperature 1 teaspoon of Onion Powder 1 cup of Sour Cream ½ cup of Mayonnaise 1 heaped tablespoon (approximately 10) fresh Chives, finely diced METHOD 1.

Soften the cream cheese before using so it is easy to make smooth – take out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before.

2.

Mix the cream cheese until smooth then add the onion powder and stir until combined.

3.

Add the sour cream, mayonnaise and chives and stir to combine.

4.

Refrigerate for 30 minutes then serve with your favourite chips. Note: Keep refrigerated and do not leave at room temperature for more than 2 hours. This potato chip dip can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. * a good idea For a garlic dip, simply swap the onion powder for garlic powder.

VEGETABLE CHIPS INGREDIENTS Sweet Potatoes, red or golden Beets, Zucchini, Squash Fine sea Salt Avocado Oil METHOD 1.

Preheat oven to 150 degrees Celcius. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper, and set aside.

2.

Scrub clean vegetables (peel, if desired).

3.

Using a mandolin, slice the vegetables into thin slices.

4.

Lay the veggie slices in one layer on paper towels. Sprinkle liberally with sea salt. Set aside and allow to sweat out excess moisture for 15 minutes.

5.

When 15 minutes is up, use paper towels to dab off the extra moisture. Transfer to the prepared baking sheets in one layer, then brush or spray with avocado oil.

6.

Place the baking sheets in the oven and bake for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, rotate the pans (including switching racks). Bake an additional 15 minutes, then rotate again. Bake an additional 5-10 minutes, or until chips are brown and feel slightly crisp. Some chips might crisp up earlier than others—remove those as they finish.

7.

Note: The chips will crisp up even more when cool, so do not worry if they are a bit floppy.

MATERIALS Scissors Paper Glue Stick DIRECTIONS 1.

Start with a rectangular piece of paper. Cut the paper in half diagonally from one corner to the other.

2.

Your triangle will have a short side (A) a long side (B) and a 90 degree angle. The tip of the cone will be formed along the third side of the triangle, directly across from the 90 degree angle.

3.

Take side A and bring the point of the side up to the 90 degree angle, “cutting” the angle in half.

This will be the basic shape of your cone.

4.

Wrap side B all the way around the cone.

5.

Take the point of side B and fold it down into the cone, creasing the edge over the original cone shape.

6.

Fold the edge over one more time to lock it in place or secure with glue.

FILL YOUR CONE UP INGREDIENTS AND METHOD 1.

Start with a base of a breadstick.

2.

Add two crackers and a few cubes of Emmental cheese.

3.

Layer in a skewer of olives and cornichons.

4.

Place two thin slices of your favourite cheddar.

5.

Add a couple of folded salami slices.

6.

Garnish with a sprig of rosemary.

7.

Finish with a sprinkling of salty almonds. * a good idea To stand these paper cones up at serving time you can use a box with holes punched in it or a container filled with rice/beans or just stack them snuggly in a basket.

CAKE

speckled egg brownies Chocolate brownies but make them “Eastery”!

INGREDIENTS 200g unsalted Butter 1 ¼ cups (200g) dark Chocolate Chips 1 cup (175g) Brown Sugar 3 Eggs, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract 1/2 cup (75g) plain Flour 1/4 cup (30g) Cocoa Powder Pinch of Salt 180g dark Chocolate Bunny/Eggs (optional), broken into chunks METHOD 1.

Preheat oven to 180°C. 2.

Spray a 20cm square tin with oil and line with baking/parchment paper with overhang.

3.

Place butter and chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl, microwave in 30 second bursts (usually 1 minute and 30 seconds) until melted. Stir until smooth.

4.

Add sugar and vanilla, mix, then add eggs and mix well until smooth.

5.

Add flour, cocoa and salt and stir until smooth. Stir in chopped chocolate, pour into baking tin.

6.

Bake 24 minutes (really gooey in the centre) up to 32 minutes (moist fudge-cake-like).

7.

Rest for 10 minutes before lifting out of the pan. Allow to cool for at least 20 minutes before cutting.

8.

Using an egg shape cookie cutter, cut out “eggs”.

9.

Dust with icing sugar.

FUN AND GAMES

dip-dye ombre eggs Easter egg decorating is a fun activity for all, especially if you encourage everyone to have a turn and maybe even a grand prize for the best one? Here are a few easy techniques that require very little materials and time but give egg-cellent results!

MATERIALS Hard-boiled Eggs Plastic Cups Gel Food Colouring Distilled White Vinegar Hot Water Spoon Rubber Gloves METHOD 1.

Stir food colouring into a cup of hot water.

2.

Mix in one tablespoon of distilled white vinegar.

3.

Repeat for each colour you want to use.

4.

Carefully drop your hard-boiled egg into the first cup and let it sit until it reaches your desired colour.

5.

Remove the egg from the cup and let it dry completely.

6.

Dip the egg about two-thirds of the way into your next colour and hold it there for a few minutes, checking the shade occasionally. Don’t forget your rubber gloves for this step.

7.

Remove the egg and set it aside to dry.

8. Dip the bottom third of the egg into your last colour and hold it for a few minutes.

9.

Take the egg out of the cup and let it dry.

tattoo eggs MATERIALS Eggs Temporary Tattoos Water Sponge or Paper Towel DIRECTIONS 1.

Cut the temporary tattoo to fit the size of your egg.

2.

Peel the clear plastic sheet from the top of the tattoo and place it face down on the egg.

3.

Using a damp paper towel or sponge, place it over the the back of the tattoo and hold it in place for 30-40 seconds.

4.

Slowly peel the backing off the tattoo.

FUN AND GAMES

marble eggs MATERIALS String Egg Plastic Cup Water 2-3 different colours of Nail Polish Toothpick DIRECTIONS 1.

Tie a piece of string or twine around the egg.

2.

Fill a plastic cup with water deep enough to cover the egg.

3.

Drizzle two or three colours of nail polish over the surface of the water.

4.

Use a toothpick to lightly swirl the nail polish across the surface of the water.

5.

Holding the string, dip the egg down through the nail polish and slowly pull it back out.

6.

You should be left with a beautiful marbled pattern.

7.

Hang your egg to dry.

Make a ball and flatten it with a rolling pin on a piece of parchment. Roll to about 1cm thick.

3.

To make a base, place a glass bowl upside down on the clay and trace around the edge with a craft knife.

To make the sides, use the ruler to cut a strip long enough to wrap around the base.

Wrap the side piece around the base and use the craft knife to cut off any overlap.

Use the blending tool or your fingers to smooth the seams together on the inside, side, and bottom.

If required, preheat your oven according to the package directions for the clay.

8. Place the bowls on parchment paper on a sheet pan and bake according to instructions.

Use water to dilute a small amount of paint.

10. Dip the tips of the toothbrush into the paint, and practice your spatter technique on a piece of paper, holding the brush a little above the paper: - Hold the toothbrush close to the bristles and use your thumb to spray the paint.

- Try pointing the bristles down and tap the back of the brush.

- To make bigger dots, tap the very tip of the toothbrush directly on the clay.

- The goal is to make dots of different sizes instead of streaks—so practice until you get the right ratio of water to paint. Be sure to keep dipping your toothbrush into the water and paint mix.

Keeping the brush wet is part of the trick of spatter painting.

Note: You can paint the DIY clay bowls before or after you bake them. Paint before baking if you do not want to wait for it to dry. Paint after baking if you want to see how what colour the clay is when it dries. You might want to give the bare clay a base coat—just make sure it is completely cool before painting.
