Approximately 25-years and three months to that day the City of Inglewood was to become home to the Raiders and Rams, Inglewood now stands on the cusp of becoming the sports and entertainment capitol of the world. The memory is still vivid when Hollywood Park publicist Jack Disney had informed me in confidence that a deal between Hollywood Park and Raiders owner Al Davis had died on the date it was to be announced. Bottom line was, the late Al Davis didn’t want to share a new stadium with the neighboring Rams who had been playing in Orange County. Inglewood had already been promised two Super Bowls and the whole nine, but what Inglewood didn’t have 25-years ago was Rams owner E.

Stanley Kroenke and forward thinking Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts. Unlike Davis 25 years, Kroenke was willing bankroll the project, but it wasn’t going to be just any stadium, it was going to be something that would blow the lid off the world, and it has done just that. The savvy Butts, while intrigued by the possibility of rejuvenation of Inglewood, which had been plagued by high unemployment, crime and the decaying Hollywood Park racetrack, he was not going to mortgage the future of the city to get it done. Mayor Butts who shrank unemployment in Inglewood from more than 17 percent to a record low of 4.7 percent, met Kroenke in 2013 in what was supposed to be a 15-minute meeting at City Hall that stretched out
to more than two hours. A Citizen Initiative was created and more than 22,000 signatures collected. The City Council could have decided to place the measure on the ballot or sign it into law, but instead approved it into law. Three years later in 2016, the NFL votes to approve the Rams relocating to the Southern California region and also approved the Chargers to move from San Diego to the where it was born in Los Angeles in 1960. Now, Inglewood a city where the Ku Klux Klan ran rampant from 1922-1937, that birthed and nourished Hollywood Park for 75 years, opened the Forum in 1967 and housed the Lakers and Kings until 1999 is on an orbit of its own. Rep. Waters announce $17.5 million in noise mitigation grants IT News Wire
LOS ANGELES – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Chair of the House Financial Services Committee (FSC), announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provided $17,500,000 in grants for residential noise mitigation for individuals and families who live near LAX. The grants were funded by the CARES Act, a $2 trillion economic security package that included several provisions drafted by Congresswoman Waters in her capacity as FSC Chair. “I am proud to announce that the FAA has awarded a total of $17.5 million in grants for residential noise mitigation for people who live near LAX and are affected by airport noise,” said Congresswoman Waters. “These grants will help individuals and families in more than 1,000 local residences mitigate the impact of airport noise in their homes.” The FAA provided the following three grants totaling $17,500,000 to provide residential noise mitigation to residences in the vicinity of LAX: $10,000,000 for the Los Angeles County Development Authority (LACDA) for approximately 230 residences in the unincorporated communities of Lennox and Athens.
$3,750,000 for the City of Inglewood for approximately 700 Inglewood residences. $3,750,000 for the City of Los Angeles for approximately 185 residences in the City of El Segundo. “I am especially proud that these grants were funded by the historic CARES Act,” said Congresswoman Waters. “As Chair of the Financial Services Committee, I fought to ensure that this $2 trillion economic security package included a broad range of initiatives to invest in housing, transportation, and other infrastructure and to help families, support essential workers, and maintain public services like noise mitigation. I am pleased that this landmark legislation is helping local families affected by airport noise.” Inglewood residents who want to learn more about residential noise mitigation can contact Bettye Griffith, the director of the City of Inglewood’s Residential Sound Insulation Program (RSIP), at (310) 412-5289. Residents of other communities near LAX can contact Leonor Pacillas, at (626) 586-1815 or Leonor.Pacillas@lacda.org, or Bill Pro, at (626) 586-1836 or Bill.Pro@lacda. org, with LACDA’s RSIP for more information. “Noise from planes flying into and
out of LAX is extremely disruptive for people who live and work near the airport,” said Congresswoman Waters. “Moreover, while the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a reduction in air travel, it has also caused children and adults to spend more time studying and working in their homes exposed to airport noise. These grants will bring relief to more than one thousand individuals and families who deserve to enjoy peace and quiet at home.”

project over the past four years,” said Rams Owner/Chairman Stan Kroenke. “During a period of unrest and change in many parts of the country, it’s been our deepest privilege to work on a project this special with such a diverse workforce. Thank you for making our vision a reality.” Located in the entertainment capital of the world, SoFi Stadium is the first football stadium to be built within Los Angeles in nearly 100 years. The state-of-the-art venue includes many firsts across industries, including in architecture, construction, engineering, technology and more. It is the largest stadium in the NFL at 3.1 million square feet, and the first open-air, indoor-outdoor venue to be built. This structural marvel will usher in a new era of sports, entertainment, and football in Southern California. “When you see our SoFi Stadium home and the ongoing development surrounding it, you have to marvel at Stan Kroenke’s vision,” said Los Angeles Chargers Owner and Chairman of the Board Dean Spanos. “This is an iconic project, anchored by an iconic stadium, that will not only redefine the City of Inglewood, it will redefine the landscape of greater Los Angeles for the next century and beyond. This has been a long time coming, and we cannot wait to usher in a new era of Chargers football on what will undoubtedly be the grandest stage in all of sports.” SoFi Stadium can host approximately 70,000 fans, expandable up to 100,000 for special events. A stadium built to be fan-first, it has more than 260 suites, seven suite concepts, 12 club spaces, and more than 13,000 premium seats all designed to cater to convenience and extraordinary fan experiences. An all-digital venue, SoFi Stadium has 90,000 square feet of digital LED in the seating bowl alone, 70,000 of which makes up the largest videoboard in sports. A completely unique design, SoFi Stadium’s videoboard is the first of its kind and the only 4k end-to-end videoboard in sports. In addition to 20 NFL home games a year, SoFi Stadium will host a variety of events throughout the year and is already the home of LA Bowl, Taylor Swift’s Lover Fest West in 2021, WrestleMania in 2021, Kenny Chesney’s Chillaxification Tour in 2021, Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard’s The Stadium Tour in 2021, Super Bowl LVI in 2022, the College Football National Championship game in 2023, and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic Games. SoFi Stadium is the centerpiece of Hollywood Park, a near 300-acre sports and entertainment destination being developed by Kroenke. It is the largest mixed-use development under construction in the Western United States, and with more than 25 acres of public parks and open space, Hollywood Park is designed to be a true community gathering space for Inglewood, greater Los Angeles, and the world. Entirely privately funded, Hollywood Park, when complete, will offer up to 5 million square feet of creative office space, an exceptional 500,000-square-foot retail district, up to 3,000 residences, and a hotel.

Parent Elementary scores with Jared Goff backpacks Rams quarterback impacts kids through education

Inglewood Unified District Schools are still confined to remote learning as a result of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, but that still did not prevent Rams start quarterback from unveiling the Goff Scholastic Book Program at Frank D. Parent Elementary School on Sept. 8. Teachers, parents and students who were brought to receive backpacks and books delivered by Goff joined Parent Elementary School Principal Margaret Nayfield. “We are honored and excited to give away backpacks. Jared Goff has donated backpacks and books to given to our first through third grade students at Parent, and I am just so honored and excited that he was thinking about us,” Nayfield explained to Inglewood Today. In an effort to help level the educational playing field for Inglewood youth, Goff is providing Scholastic book packs to 1,000 Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD) students. IUSD students (grades 1st-3rd) will receive a “grab and go” Reading Take Home Pack for their personal libraries and instructional practice. Each take home pack will consist of books, reading and writing activities, as well as a family resource guide to help parents support and encourage their child’s reading interests and opportunities. The reading supplies are packaged in customized JG16 backpacks and distributed to Inglewood Unified students. The take home packs will also include a letter from Goff that encourages the
students to discover the excitement and adventures that reading can provide. Parent Elementary School is among of six Inglewood Unified elementary schools will receive the book packs. This is one of the few occasions where contributions made by the Rams, Chargers or any of their existing partners that directly benefitted the students. Inglewood Unified School District remains under the control of the State of California and any financial donations made to the district will likely go towards paying off the substantial debt the district is straddled with. Nayfield says she is “absolutely” excited that the donations went directly to the kids. “That’s the best thing (direct donations to the students) because we want to make sure that our students have access to all of these resources and are feeling so special, especially during these times. I think right now with distant learning and not being in the school, but we still want to make sure that our students are experiencing as much learning as they can.” More than 135 students were treated with the Jared Goff backpacks.

Sports & Entertainment Low expectations be damn as Rams new era begins
By Kenneth Miller, Publisher
It seemed like yesterday when the Rams were the talk of the NFL, a Super Bowl favorite, a media darling in the hottest market in the nation and making the playoffs was a mere formality. Well, folks those days are gone. When the Rams open the spectacular $6 billion SoFi Stadium on Sept. 13 on NBC Sunday Night Football against “Americas Team” the Dallas Cowboys all of the focus and pressure will be on Dak Prescott. It’s Prescott and game busting running back Ezekiel Elliott who will be burning in the spotlight as the legitimate Super Bowl contenders, a role the Rams are all too familiar with
and such lofty expectations can carry the weight of an elephant. So, it will interesting to see how the revamped Rams come out of the gate with very limited reps, just 14 or so padded scrimmages in the new saucer they own. Quarterback Jared Goff is coming off back-to-back seasons where he tossed 12 and 16 interceptions while accumulating a combing 9,326 yards and 54 touchdowns. Goff who has quickly elevated his status among the stars of professional athletes in Southern California and particularly Inglewood has been a star off the field and is on the threshold of becoming one of the most popular
players in franchise history. However, he knows and so does his coach Sean McVay that in this town winning is not just everything, it’s the only thing. Last season was a giant step in the wrong direction when they finished 9-7 and would have made the playoffs under the new, 14-team format. McVay shook up his staff by hiring three new coordinators, shipping running back Todd Gurley and wide receiver Brandin Cooks for cap reasons, and trying to rebuild the front four on defense. Aaron Donald is still a menacing presence on the defensive front, but he can’t do it all by himself. Can he?
The big problem is that they didn’t address the protection for Goff on the offensive line. They re-signed 38-yearold tackle Andrew Whitworth and seem confident Rob Havenstein can return to form after a disastrous 2019. The interior is full of young players who haven’t yet proved themselves to be NFL-caliber linemen; last year, the Rams lost Joe Noteboom and Brian Allen to injuries. If they can stay healthy and give quarterback Goff more time to throw, the Rams could look more like the offensive juggernaut of 2017 and 2018, but if they don’t well… Prediction: 10-6; AFC West 2nd.
Chargers need to win games and fans fast By Kenneth Miller, Publisher
The Chargers will not see the home of their new SoFi Stadium confines until week two of the NFL season, but when game one scheduled on the road against the hapless Bengals in Cincinnati it is safe to say that all eyes will be on the defense. This will be the first game for the Bolts since the face of the franchise quarterback Phillip Rivers was let go and has landed in Indianapolis with the Colts. However, not much point production is expected from an offense that will likely be without receiver Mike Williams in the week opener. In the meanwhile, a defense anchored by defensive end Joey Bosa is even thinner after star safety Derwin suffered a torn meniscus in camp and will likely miss all of 2020. With James out and wide receiver Mike Williams is questionable for Week 1 with a shoulder injury the Chargers may be fortunate to leave Ohio with a victory. Tyrod Taylor takes over under center and will not have to look over his shoulder like he did in Cleveland waiting for baker Mayfield to assume the helm. The hope here is that he regains the form he had while playing for the Bills when Buffalo ranked 10th in offense, but anything short of that and this could be another season looking up from the AFC
West basement. This COVID-19 season has handicapped every team in the league and particularly hurts a team like the Chargers which will rely on young players on defense such as linebacker Kenneth Murray.
Coach Anthony Lynn will have his work cut for him in this strange and crazy new normal that likely will prevent fans from seeing the team in person, but management will have a watchful eye on him and his staff if things unravel and the local tenant emerges as a Super
Bowl contender. This is not a team expected to beat the Chiefs, but in their Inglewood introduction they desperately need to win over some fans that will eventually be allowed to watch them play. Prediction: 7-9; 3rd in AFC West.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? By Michelle Lyons, Columnist
It seems like just yesterday Colin Kaepernick was taking a knee and the entire country was up in arms. I never understood how kneeling to the flag was disrespectful. Kneeling is the highest form of respect, it’s a sign of worship, and since God is omnipresent no matter where you kneel you are kneeling before God. Most of the black community instantly understood that Colin’s protest was crying out to the United States and to God simultaneously to garner awareness for the racial injustice in modern-day America. Fast forward, we are now entering into the 2020-21 football season where this year players are allowed to peacefully protest, and the first week the NFL will play the black National Anthem during every game. Roger Goodell, the commissioner of The NFL, has even come out publicly stating, “I wish we had listened then”. Colin Kaepernick’s bravery has won him countless awards, an amazing shoe contract and just this week he has been added to EA Sports. As President Obama said, “The Moral Arch of the Universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” Where would we be as a society if we had given Colin’s protest the attention is required four years ago. I believe in divine timing so this was the year this great reckoning was suppose to happen, but we should have been on the right side of justice years ago. We are just now trying to catch up, both Roger Goodell’s apology and Cam Newton playing for the Patriots are great symbols that our country wants to eradicate racism. Cam Newton as the quarterback on The Patriots reminds me of The Rugby World Cup in 1995. Nelson Mandela received an ESPY award because Rugby was the final stitch that brought a divided nation back together again. We are that divided Nation, so now all we need to do is WIN because everyone loves a WINNER! #GOUSA
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Los Angeles Rams announced they have agreed to terms with cornerback Jalen Ramsey on a five-year extension. The move will keep Ramsey under contract in L.A. through the 2025 season. Originally acquired in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars last October, Ramsey made 33 total tackles, one interception and four pass breakups in nine games with the Rams in 2019. Following the conclusion of the 2019 season, he was named to his third straight Pro Bowl and made his third career appearance on the NFL’s Top 100 players list. Off the field, Ramsey recently donated $1 million to Purpose Preparatory Academy – an elementary school in his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee – to help enhance its programming. Overall, the former Florida State standout has produced 233 total tackles, 10 interceptions (one returned for touchdown) and 49 pass breakups through 236 career games since entering the NFL as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2016 draft.
