Community update on development of property
Dear Inglewood Unified School District Families, Staff and Community: I am excited to share with our community that the Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD) is moving forward with the next steps in developing the 23 acres of land between Morningside High School and Monroe TK-8. IUSD is issuing a Request for Qualification/Proposal (“RFQ/P”) to seek a development partner on a longterm ground lease of the property for up to 99 years. The proposed development
will generate ongoing revenue, maximize job creation opportunities for community residents, create community benefits, and support revitalization and beautification within the District’s boundaries. The project will accelerate our District’s financial health and the goal of returning to local control. This is a much anticipated project. In 2018, after ten public meetings and hearings of the District’s Surplus Property Advisory Committee, the land was recommended for surplus through a long-term lease. However, at that time the District’s options were to sell or negotiate a shorter-term lease, which made development of the property financially unworkable

California: The truth is, if Governor Newsom is recalled, he will most likely be replaced by an anti-mask, anti-vax, and anti-immigrant far-right Trump supporter. That poses a real threat to the progress we’ve made here in California and across the country. On every issue — from the pandemic to climate change to immigration and beyond — building on the progress we’ve made here in California requires stopping this Republican Recall attempt and keeping Governor Newsom in office. But with just a week to go, the polls show this is a tight race. We need to do everything we can to get as many NO voters as possible to turn in their ballots ahead of next week’s deadline. So we are asking for your support to help Gavin Newsom defeat the Republican Recall and to keep California blue: Please split a contribution — of whatever amount you can afford — to help us organize to defeat the Republican Recall and to keep California blue. The marketing of the project to developers, including the RFQ/P process, will be vigorous, advertised nation-wide and transparent. All stakeholders will be welcome and encouraged to participate. The RFQ/P and all marketing materials will be available on the District’s website when issued. Gov. Newsom likely to survive Recall But State Democratic Bastion Shaken By Kenneth Miller, Publisher
As the fate of California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom hang in limbo amid the brutally fraught Sept. 14 Recall election, most shows indicate that he is more than likely to retain his stronghold against a hasty competitive political power struggle spurned out of spite of his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic response. FiveThirtyEight’s polling average shows Newsom with an edge of 10.4 percentage points over the pro-recall effort (53% to 42.6%), up from 5.6 points at the end of August. A poll last week from the Public Policy Institute of California said that 58% of likely voters would vote against the recall. However, Newsom and the Democratic party are not taking anything for granted heading into the final days before the polls close and have summoned their heavy hitters in a robust effort to stave off bombastic conservative radio talk show host Larry Elder who is the greatest threat to the governor. During slew of rallies, Newsom has received support from his biggest allies including President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, United States Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Amy Klobuchar
of Minnesota, Southern California Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Los Angeles Congresswoman Karen Bass and Northern California Congresswoman Barbara Lee to name a few. The state’s unions having been pouring mountains of cash into Newsom coffers, of the nearly $39 million raised by the campaign so far, almost half, $17 million, is from public and private sector unions. California Correctional Peace Officers Association, wrote his campaign a $1.75 million check. The California Teachers Association chipped in $1.8 million and their national partner, the American Federation of Teachers, contributed
Black Men Prioritized in No on Recall Efforts in L.A. County By Jasmyne Cannick, Special to Inglewood Today
As the California gubernatorial recall election nears, Black Men Voting has joined the No on Recall efforts in Los Angeles County by working to inform all Black, particularly those ages 18 to 35, to vote on the Republican-led effort to oust Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. Reverend Jewett L. Walker, Jr., political strategist and co-founder of Black Men Voting predicted, “We can expect cuts to education, a reduction in social welfare spending and a halt to police and criminal justice reform if Black men don’t vote in record numbers.” Early ballot return results from political data firm Political Data Inc. (PDI) indicate that while Democrats are outpacing Republicans and noparty-preference voters, young voters and voters in the Latino, Asian and Black communities are lagging behind older and white voters in returning their recall ballots. As of last week, PDI says that 22.9% of all registered African American voters in California have returned their ballots. While only 22.8% of all Black male voters have returned theirs Attorney Dermot Givens, co-founder of Black Men Voting added, “We helped
$250,000 to Newsom. The 2021 recall is will shed yet another spotlight on California’s booming Latino population which represented 32 percent of registered voters in 2020 and also the shrinking electorate of the Black population which is just at 7.1 percent, but still powerful enough to swing an election. Since the last California recall election, UCLA LPPI estimates that there has been nearly a 126% increase of Latino voters and 94% increase for Asian American voters. During the past 20 years, the white voting population in California was largely unchanged. Because the Recall is occurring during an off election cycle, Newsom is banking on churning out most of
the more than 10 million registered Democrats, a commanding 50 percent of the electorate. While it appears that Republicans with just 24 percent of California registered voters has a snow ball chance of dethroning Newsom, Elder has made them nervous. The 69-year old Elder who hails from Los Angeles and was graduated from Crenshaw High School, is an Ivy league educated zealot who aligns himself with former President Donald Trump and although Black has a penchant for alienating minorities and the Black community as a shock radio host. Among the many off the scale comments Elder has made one of the most alarming was when he argued that slavery was legal and slave owners deserve compensation. Elder made that comment during a July 18 appearance on Dennis Prager University’s “The Candace Owens Show,” that an argument could be made in favor of reparations for slave owners whose legal “property” was taken from them after the Civil War. He has “repeatedly twisted crime statistics to portray Black people as more violent than whites,” and also vilified African American political, religious and community leaders, as well as our organizations and institutions.
Gov. Gavin Newsom has been one of the most pro-Latino governors in CA history. By Ricardo Lara, Insurance Commissioner
increase Black male voting during the elections of President Joe Biden, VicePresident Kamala Harris, and U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock. We will do the same for Governor Newsom. Our proven strategy of using social media along with text messaging and direct mail that specifically targets Black men works. Black Men Voting joins dozens of groups in Los Angeles County focused on Black voters who can be the deciding factor in an off-year special election that is expected to be significantly impacted by voter turnout. Walker added, “There is a lot at stake for Black voters in this recall election. Many of the gains that we have fought for over the years may go right out the window with a regressive Republican governor. With so little time left to vote before September 14, it’s important that Black men participate fully in this recall election.”
As California’s first Latino United States Senator and as a first-generation Mexican-American, I know firsthand why representation matters. I have the honor of representing our state in Washington D.C. -- working night and day to make it easier for Californians to succeed in school, work and life. However, the road towards progress is not always easy. I was inspired to get involved in public service due to one of California’s darkest moments in our recent history -- the passage of Proposition 187. I still remember the feeling when I heard those in charge blaming people like myself and my parents for the problems facing our state. After months of blatant xenophobia and racist dog whistles both on air and off, I couldn’t stay silent. I joined Latino activists across California in calling Prop 187 what it was: a racist scheme by the Republican Party to rile up their base. Thankfully, Prop 187 was stopped by the courts before it could cause incalculable damage to California. Nearly 30 years later, the Republican Party is continuing to push their rightwing agenda. Today, the GOP has found their latest scheme to fuel their radicalization within the nation’s bluest
state -- attempting to recall Governor Gavin Newsom. At the center of the GOP insurgence are anti-immigrant, anti-science and extremists who are seeking to divide us and roll back all the progress we’ve made. It’s clear, the Republican recall leaders have laid out their vision for the California they want - and that’s to take us back to some of our darkest days. Lead proponents of the recall have openly stated “microchipping illegal aliens” and in the official voter information guide claimed that the reason to recall Governor Gavin Newsom is because “laws he endorsed Continued on page 7

Sisters Leslie and LeAnn Jones bring Inglewood its first wine bar, ‘1010 Wine and Events’
By Brea Mitchell, Staff Writer
Sisters and co-owners Leslie and LeAnn Jones have opened the doors of Inglewood’s very first wine bar, and the duo looks forward to hosting events and other entertainment at their new space in the upcoming months. Located near North La Brea Avenue and Centinela Avenue, ‘1010 Wine and Events’ held their grand opening on
August 22, and the Jones’s were pleased by the high turnout and community support on their big day. ‘1010 Wine and Events’ will place an emphasis on Black-owned brands. “Us being Black-owned, we need to highlight Blackowned wines, too,” says LeAnn Jones. And she’s found the Black-owned wine community to be very tight-knit. After a single phone call to one company, it quickly led to another, and another. “Once you make a call to one, you make a call to all of them,” says Jones, with a grin. Opening the city’s first wine bar isn’t the only thing on the sisters’ plate. LeAnn is already an accomplished

attorney, and Leslie is an established wedding and event planner– each having their own companies in those respective fields, as well. The idea for the wine bar came in 2018, during a time when Leslie was seeking local event space for her company, and LeAnn had developed a love for wine
throughout school and traveling. The two decided to team up and open the bar together. The sisters found and purchased the space in July of 2019, but construction issues delayed the opening. Shortly after that, the COVID-19 pandemic set things back, once again. Finally, in August of 2021, ‘1010 Wine and Events’ opened its doors, and there’s lots more on the horizon. Patrons can expect daily happy hour, live music on Wednesdays, ‘Meet the Winemaker’ on certain Fridays, Rosé Sundays, sporadic art shows, and more.

Both the Rams and Chargers got a taste of what it feels like to actually play a football game in front of fans at SoFi Stadium in the preseason, but with the NFL season kicking off for real on Sept. 12 the $5 billion Inglewood saucer will be sublime indeed. More than a year ago the most anticipated the venue in modern history hosted an NFL season amid crickets, grunts and crackling helmets, but this season SoFi Stadium will be rocking, the traffic alongside Prairie Ave., Century Blvd. and Manchester Ave. will be an absolute mess and spectators who meet the COVID-19 regulations will be going bananas. It will all be a dress rehearsal for Super Bowl LVI on Feb. 13. For the Rams which lost in the divisional round last season, their opening date against the visiting Chicago Bears on NBC prime time television will offer some fleeting clues if this team is capable of winning it all. The Rams host three of its first five games against the Bears, the defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers in
week three and division foe Arizona in week four. The off season was invested in fixing an offense which failed miserably under the leadership of Geoff Goff who was shipped off to Detroit for 11year veteran Matthew Stafford who has never won a post season game. Stafford is expected to benefit tremendously in Sean McVay’s high octane offense that has added veteran speedster DeSean Jackson to a

Chargers rookie head coach Brandon Staley may not have had adequate time to implement all of the new wrinkles he wanted during an abbreviated training camp, but so is life in the NFL. Defensive star Joey Bosa said that he didn’t think that he could learn new tricks, but Staley has convinced him he could in a revamped defensive scheme and philosophy that will move Bosa all over the field. Staley did wonders with the Rams defensive unit last season when he served as coordinator, but now as captain of his own ship he will soon discover it’s a whole new ball game. He will not have Aaron Donald and
receivers corp that includes the reliable Robert Woods and the oft injured and inconsistent Cooper Kupp. This group, less Jackson, caught all of one touchdown pass in two playoff games last year, stressing an elite defense to the limit until it was lit up by Aaron Rogers in the divisional round. Running back Cam Akers rushed for 221 yards and two touchdowns combined in those playoff encounters,
but he is lost for the season suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon. He will be replaced by running backs Darrell Henderson and Sony Michel. The question will be if either can sustain the rushing attack for an entire season. Michel was acquired from the Patriots after being used sparingly albeit efficiently, Henderson may not be durable enough. This team will hang its hat on all world defensive star Aaron Donald and ultra gifted corner back Jalen Ramsey. Defensive coordinator Brandon Staley was hired away by the Chargers, but new coordinator Raheem Morris is more than capable. All eyes will be on McVay as well, the wunderkind offensive genius who led the Rams to a Super Bowl berth in 2018, just three years ago. This is his fifth year at the helm and he has teased every year since. Owner Stan Kroenke has pushed all of his chips to the center of the table. Kroenke has given McVay everything that he has asked for, but now the owner wants a return on his investment. Super Bowl or bust!

Over 10,000 Californians and multiple sectors leaders call for a 100% electric truck fleet by 2040
IT News Wire
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) released the first draft of the Advance Clean Fleet (ACF) rule on August 26, 2021. This rule, a firstin-the-world, seeks to push forward a requirement that every new truck sold in California be zero-emission by 2040. This rule directly addresses the disproportionate health risk that communities, especially low-income Black and Brown, in California experience due to their proximity to heavy truck traffic such as distribution centers, ports, and rail yards. Over 10,000 Californians and multiple industries urge CARB to push a more aggressive policy to protect the most vulnerable communities, stimulate the economy, and achieve cleaner air in California. “Diesel pollution from California’s transportation system and the worsening climate crisis hits communities of color and low-income communities hardest. Frontline communities pay the price in poorer health, reduced life expectancy, and increased expenses. Perkins has worked tirelessly to solidify his roster position, and his coaches and teammates have taken notice, along with others throughout the league. ‘Next Gen Stats’ clocked Perkins as one of the NFL’s fastest players in preseason Week 3, ranking second behind only Kansas City Chiefs’ Tyreek Hill. “The strides he’s made since I even got here and saw him for the first time really ever this spring and to where he is now– just really proud of him and it’s a testament to him and the work he has put into it,” said Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, after practice. Perkins joined the Rams as a free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft, and was originally waved during final roster cuts. Shortly after, he was signed to the practice squad. In January of 2021, he was one of 14 players to sign a reserve/futures contract with the Rams. Now, headed into Week 1 of the 2021 season, Perkins’ diligence has paid off, as he’s made a place for himself on the stacked roster.
