Councilmember Eloy Morales: A Champion for the City of Inglewood
By Francis Taylor, Senior Correspondent
Councilmember Eloy Morales, 3rd District representative for the City of Inglewood, was first elected to the city council in 2003. He has directly contributed to the dramatic changes and improvements the city has experienced. Morales grew up in Inglewood and his father’s leadership and involvement in the community contributed to his decision to run for elected office. As a member of the city council, when council members could not agree on anything, he has been an active participant in the transformation of a city council that synergistically handles the city’s business, gets things done, and broadly garners the support of the majority of Inglewood residents “I earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of California, Northridge and a J. D. Degree from California Western School of Law in San Diego,” Morales said. “I was inspired to run for elected office by my father and it has
been a pleasure serving the citizens in the city where I grew up.” While it is difficult highlighting 17 years of dedicated community service in a few paragraphs, Morales notes that for many years he was the only Latino representative on the council. He recalls how he was frequently asked to make calls to city staffers on behalf of nonEnglish speaking residents who needed city services. “The city has come a long way during my service as it pertains to the access Spanish-speaking residents have to literature, documents and information,” Morales said. In addition, Morales has been instrumental in delivering many notable accomplishments that have helped to transform the city’s landscape. He listed the vice squad that was formed to clean up Century Boulevard and the closure of adult book stores and massage parlors. He described the five percent grave space for local businesses that allowed local businesses to prevail when their bid was within five percent of the winning
& Lakers
bid and the revitalization of the annual Hispanic Fiesta. Another accomplishment that Morales lists as a significant is the redevelopment of the local park where he grew up. Ash Park has received a $1.6 million face lift that has transformed the community. Not only is it an award worthy-park with tennis and basketball courts, it also features a child’s water park and adult exercise stations. “I am also delighted,” Morales said, “that we were able to remove the fence around the park that was installed years ago to
contain gang activity.” Morales commented on the synergy the council demonstrates in weekly council meetings explaining that agenda items are thoroughly vetted before they are presented in an open forum. “I am familiar with the issues that will be reviewed in the weekly meetings and I ensure that all of the questions, objections and concerns are addressed by the city staff, before they come before the public.” Morales said. Waters Slams LASD Killing of Schools K-12 to Offer In-Person Learning Dijon Kizzee, Calls for Investigation
Public Health Revises Health Officer Order IT News Wire
L.A. County will not open the waiver program for grades TK-6 at this time; hair salons and barbershops may offer indoor service with limited occupancy The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health), in consultation with the Board of Supervisors, has revised the Health Officer Order to allow for limited, on-campus operation for schools in L.A. County, as well as limited indoor operations of Hair Salons and Barbershops. Beginning Monday, September 14, schools K-12 may offer in-school services for small cohorts of students
with Individualized Education Plans (IEP), students requiring instruction for English as a Second Language (ESL) or students needing assessments or specialized in-school services, as long as the school is able to fully implement the Health Officer’s re-opening protocols. Public Health will not be opening the waiver program for instruction of students in grades TK-6 as the department monitors the implementation of this effort to safely get students needing specialized inschool services back to school. LOS ANGELES – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Chair of the House Financial Services Committee (FSC), issued a statement today slamming the killing of Dijon Kizzee by Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies. “I am deeply troubled by yet another police killing of an African American man, Dijon Kizzee, stemming from an alleged bike riding code violation – a violation the sheriffs could not specify or explain to reporters on the scene. I am further disturbed by at least one witness who observed that Dijon put his hands in the air as others watching the unfolding events urged the police

not to shoot. None of the deputies were wearing body cameras and now another man is dead, shot between 10 and 20 times, after being initially stopped on his bicycle. We do not yet know all of the details of this incident, but I share in the community’s outrage. The ongoing message these police killings send is that the lives of people of color do not matter and that the practice is to shoot first and ask questions later. “The LA Sheriff’s Department is the largest county police in the United States, with 9,000 officers who patrol nearly 200 different southern California Continued on page 7

Hair salons and barbershops can re-open for indoor services at 25% occupancy provided they are in full compliance with the Health Officer’s protocols. The Order encourages these businesses to continue outdoor operations when possible, and to offer in-door operations for those services that cannot be provided outdoors. This Order is in effect beginning immediately. All other current restrictions remain unchanged at this time. “I want to extend my sincere sympathy to all our L.A. County residents that are grieving the loss of a family member, friend, co-worker or loved one. Your loss is not unnoticed, and we keep you in our hearts during these days of sadness,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. “Right now, a cautious and titrated reopening - with close monitoring of what happens to our data in the weeks to follow - is needed to ensure we are not experiencing significant spikes in cases, hospitalizations and deaths, as we saw in July after re-openings and holidays. As we slowly reopen sectors, we will watch closely how it is impacting community transmission. The longer our county’s 7-day average case rate remains above 7, as determined by the State, the longer we will remain in the State’s most restrictive Tier. In addition, once both our 7-day average case rate and 7-day average positivity percentage meet the criteria for Tier 2, they must stay there for at least two weeks before we can be moved to the
next less restrictive Tier.” Today, Public Health has confirmed 51 new deaths and 1,457 new cases of confirmed COVID-19. This brings the cumulative number of positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County to 243,935, and a total of 5,878 deaths. There are currently 1,048 hospitalized, of which 31% are confirmed cases in the ICU. Upon further investigation, 43 cases and two deaths reported earlier were not L.A. County residents. Of the 50 new deaths reported today (excluding Long Beach and Pasadena), 22 people that passed away were over the age of 80, 15 people who died were between the ages of 65 and 79 years old, eight people who died were between the ages of 50 and 64 years old, three people that passed away were between the ages of 30 and 49 years old and two people that passed away were between the ages of 18 and 29 years old. Thirty-four people had underlying health conditions including 17 people that passed away were over the age of 80, 10 people who died were between the ages of 65 and 79 years old, six people who died were between the ages of 50 and 64 years old and one person that passed away was between the ages of 30 and 49 years old. Ninety-two percent of the people who died from COVID-19 had underlying health conditions. Of those who died, information about race and ethnicity is available for 5,535 people (99 percent of the cases reported by Public Health); 51% of deaths occurred among Latino/ Latinx residents, 23% among White residents, 15% among Asian residents, 10% among African American/Black
residents, less than 1% among Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander residents and 1% among residents identifying with other races. Testing results are available for 2,317,851 individuals with 10% of all people testing positive. At the outset of the pandemic, Public Health had grave concerns for people experiencing homelessness as this population was unable to just “stay at home” as we advised everyone to do in March. However, the data that we are seeing up to this point show these fears have not come to fruition. As of August 27th, 19,715 people experiencing homelessness have been tested (with 28,502 tests) with 1.87% positivity rate. As of last week, there have been 1,589 cases among people experiencing homelessness and 160 cases among people who work at shelters. Since March, 448 people who were experiencing homelessness have been referred for isolation and 1,040 people have been referred for quarantine. There were early spikes in cases in April and May due to an outbreak at a large shelter and due to wider testing in shelters. Since then, the number has remained fairly stable. Tragically, we have seen deaths among both people who were experiencing homelessness as well as people who were working in shelters. To date, 41 people who were experiencing homelessness and 2 people who were working in shelters have passed away from COVID-19. And, in the last month, 15 people passed away, which may be related to the spikes in cases we saw across our county in the month of July.

Morales has witnessed a number of mayors in the City of Inglewood and indicated that the measure of greatness is determined by the results that are achieved. “Based upon the actual results that city has achieved, Mayor Butts is the most accomplished mayor in the city of Inglewood.” Morales said and when asked about the mayor’s former assistant’s allegations he said, “I am not particularly concerned about the controversy surrounding the mayor’s former assistant and will allow the process to play out before making any judgments or comments.” Morales is running unopposed in the November election and will serve another term as the 3rd __ district council member. “While there is much that the City of Inglewood is able to boast about with the developments that are underway, during my next term I will continue to focus on the issues that affect the quality of life for Inglewood residents.” Morales stated. “The projects that are ongoing will have an impact on the day-to-day lives of our residents and I want to make sure that we address the issues of parking, traffic, and congestion that minimize the negative impact.” “It has been a pleasure and an honor for me to serve the residents of the City of Inglewood and I am thankful and grateful for the support that I have been given. As we approach the November election,” Morales concluded, “I encourage everyone to vote for the individual who they feel will represent their interests in the local and national election. “

Bradford Bill on Police Decertification Dies on Assembly Floor or termination from employment for SACRAMENTO – Senate Bill 731, cause due to misconduct. The bill would also known as the Kenneth Ross Jr. have authorized the Commission on Police Decertification Act of 2020, Peace Officer Standards and Training failed passage on the Assembly Floor. The bill was not brought up for a vote due to the legislative deadline imposed by the California State Constitution. This bill, authored by Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena), would have increased accountability for law enforcement officers that commit serious misconduct and illegally violate a person’s civil rights. “I am deeply disappointed that this bill did not receive the debate and vote it rightfully deserved,” said Senator Bradford. “Deadlines in the second year of a session are always short, but in years past that has not prevented us from acting on major legislation. To ignore the thousands of voices calling for meaningful police reform is insulting. Today, Californians were once again let down by those who were meant to represent them.” SB 731 would have created a statewide process to revoke the to revoke a certificate on specified certification of a peace officer following grounds, as set forth in regulations by the conviction of certain serious crimes the Commission. Additionally, the bill

of organizations and individuals, including Aloe Blacc, Kim Kardashian West, Kyle Kuzma, Billie Eilish, Robert De Niro, and Chelsea Handler, among hundreds of others. Assemblymember Mike Gipson reaffirmed his support of SB 731 last night in a tweet reading, “As the peoples’ voice in #AD64, I am proud to support SB731. We need justice and we need #policereform – and we need it now.” “This issue cannot rest and we will not rest until we have real police reform,” continued Bradford. “I’d like to thank my fellow legislators who were unwavering in their support, the organizations and entertainers who advocated tirelessly, and the families who continue to fight for true justice. Their dedication and compassion is what got us this far. I am committed to pursuing this reform in the next legislative session.” If the bill had been passed by the Assembly, it would have moved to the Senate Floor for a final vote before being submitted to the Governor for his SB 731 was a priority of the signature. California Legislature Passes Bill to Enforce Out-of-State Gun Restrictions Legislation strengthens “red flag laws” by requiring California to honor and enforce gun violence restraining orders (GVROs) issued in other states
IT News Wire
SACRAMENTO, CA — Earlier this week, the California State Senate passed Assembly Bill (AB) 2617, a measure that aims to fill the vacuum created by federal inaction on gun violence by ensuring that California honors and enforces gun violence restraining orders (GVROs) issued in other states. AB 2617 is authored by Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel (D-Encino), who founded the Legislature’s Gun Violence Prevention Working Group, and who has called for broader state-level cooperation on issues related to gun violence. The bill passed with bipartisan support and is now on its way to Governor Gavin Newsom, who must sign or veto the bill by September 30, 2020. “With Congress repeatedly failing to act, California must take a broader view and do more to address threats of gun violence that originate beyond our borders,” said Assemblymember Gabriel. “Last year’s mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival was a tragic reminder that guns and gun violence too often cross state lines. This
legislation will help to prevent mass shootings and save lives by ensuring that those who have been deemed a threat to themselves or others cannot easily obtain firearms in the State of California.” A GVRO is a judicial order that allows law enforcement to temporarily confiscate firearms from an individual who poses an imminent risk of harm to themselves or others. When used to their full potential, GVROs are a powerful tool that can prevent mass shootings and suicides and save lives. Laws providing for GVROs, which are sometimes referred to as “red flag laws” or “extreme risk protection orders,” have been enacted in numerous other states. AB 2617 is supported by a broad coalition that includes law enforcement and gun safety advocates. Alex Griffin Walker, Northern California Political
Director for March For Our Lives added, “Every day in America, more than 100 lives are taken by the deadly epidemic of gun violence and young people are being disproportionately affected. Suicides are the second leading cause of death among preteens to young adults. Thousands of deaths could have possibly been prevented with the right procedures in place. California has led the nation in gun violence prevention, and by continuing to strengthen our GVRO laws, these bills will help save lives. March for our Lives is proud to support Assemblymember Gabriel’s bill to ensure the safety of our families and communities.”

Sports & Entertainment IN MEMORIAM: John Thompson, Coaching Legend and Unforgettable Mentor, Dies at 78
John Thompson By Lauren Victoria Burke, NNPA Newswire Contributor
John Thompson was the first Black coach to win the NCAA Championship. In 1984, he led the Georgetown Hoyas to victory over the Houston Cougars. In 1985 Thompson was named Coach of the Year. He coached at Georgetown University from 1972 to 1999. Thompson was a coach who set the bar high for his players on and off the basketball court. He coached Patrick Ewing, Allen Iverson, Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutumbo. He
became a mentor to many long after they left Georgetown and competitive basketball. Thompson had a preference for players that had a passion for the game on the court. He once said, “you can calm down a fool before you can resurrect a corpse.” He emphasized the power of habit, attitude and state of mind with his players. “If you think you are beaten you are. If you think you dare not, you won’t,” he once said. “Big John Thompson is the single
most important African American man in the history of D.C. sports,” Sia writer Clinton Yeats. In 1999 he was selected to be in the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. In 27 seasons, Thompson compiled a coaching record of 596-239. Most importantly to Thompson, 97 percent of his players stayed four years and left Georgetown University with a college degree. Thompson was born in Washington, D.C. and went on to play in the NBA for the Boston Celtics.
Thompson is survived by his three children, John Thompson III, who also coached basketball at Georgetown, Ronny Thompson and Tiffany Thompson. Thompson’s autobiography is due out in January 2021. IN MEMORIAM: Chadwick Boseman By Nsenga Burton, Ph.D., NNPA Newswire Culture and Entertainment Editor
The world is reeling from the loss of iconic actor Chadwick Boseman, who died Friday, August 28, after losing a private battle to colon cancer. Boseman died at home surrounded by his family. A statement released by his family said Boseman was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer in 2016 and the disease progressed to stage 4. Boseman endured countless surgeries and treatments as he continued to make films from Marshall (directed by Reginald Hudlin), Da 5 Bloods (directed by Spike Lee) and August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (directed by George C. Wolfe and produced by Denzel Washington). Washington and Boseman were first introduced when Washington paid for Boseman and several other Howard University students to continue their theater studies by taking a theater course in Oxford. The Howard University-educated thespian was the star of Marvel’s Black Panther franchise, bringing to life one
of the most important and revered superheroes in American film history. Directed by Ryan Coogler, Black Panther was the first superhero movie to be nominated for a best picture Oscar and one of the highest-grossing films of all time, bringing in over $1billion. Black Panther became more than a movie, morphing into a celebration of Black culture, art, history, achievement and intellect in addition to highlighting the Black cultural presence and influence in comic book culture. Boseman was no stranger to playing iconic characters, bursting onto the big screen in 2013’s 42 as baseball legend Jackie Robinson, who broke the color barrier in major league baseball. Boseman went on to star as Soul legend James Brown in 2014’s Get On Up and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall in 2017. Boseman brought a quiet dignity and powerful presence to these characters, with performances reflective of the weight they hold in world culture. HUMANIZE BLACKNESS By Michelle Lyons, Columnist
Just this past week, another unarmed black man was shot in the back seven times by the police while walking towards his three children. However, unlike many others, this man survived. His name is Jacob Blake. Remember his name because he will go down in history as a key figure in this modern day civil rights movement. Can you believe Rodney King’s beating was on March 3rd 1991, almost 20 years ago, and yet we are still experiencing Police brutality. With all the advances in modern day technology why are we not focused on deescalating situations? Why are police in a first World country trained to kill? Why are our politicians not focusing on uniting black lives matter and good police officers? The World is watching and we are exposing our greatest weakness, systemic racism. The World should to respect us for our great military and our great values. Too often people of color, especially Black Americans, are on the receiving end of being perceived as less than. Black Americans are viewed as guilty until proven innocent and not the other way around. As someone who was raised in a mixed race household one thing I will say is that my Jewish step-mother never made me feel less than human, and this has been a gift and curse in my life because the World I grew up in does not mirror The Country. In 1999, I moved to Brazil and my world was flipped upside down. Ninety percent of Brazilians resemble me, and they live in poverty with no way for upward mobility. Every where I went store owners would follow me around to see if I was stealing, some stores wouldn’t even let me in unless I spoke English, and every time I saw a girl that looked like me she asked me which family I was working for, presuming I was a maid. After I explained to them in Portuguese that I was American their eyes lit up like I was their superhero, some I could tell had never met a foreign black woman let alone a black woman that was successful. They spoke no English so they had very little interaction with foreigners Continued on page 7
culture through business
The Southern California roads in business is not less traveled for local entrepreneur extraordinaire Aaron Levert Moore who has continued to add to his portfolio and elevate his community. Moore hails from humble beginnings to become successful in business, but more importantly to be an instrument of service to the community he serves. One of a quad of ownership partners of the evolving LA Lounge Cigar Club in Inglewood, Moore also owns Nail & Hammer construction, Family Affairs Hair Salon and The Way Forward Foundation. “All of my companies are for the most part either home improvement or humanity uplifting. New homes, renovations, kitchen, bathrooms, additions. Fifteen percent of our business has been in the commercial area,” Moore explained to Inglewood Today. The construction company hires approximately 10-30 employees depending on the project and all of them are minority, either Black or Hispanic. Construction is close the Moore’s heart because he is a fifth generation carpenter. “My great grandfather, my grandfather, my father and then me, and now my children,” he added. He is a proud father of two sons, Aaron Levert Moore Jr., and Andrew Aaron Moore and a stepdaughter Shelby Bell. Both adult sons work in the construction company and Shelby runs the transitional living home. “We have one transitional living
home right now with 10 tenants.” When asked his inspiration for the transitional living home, which is located in South Los Angeles, he responded; “Every business that I have is inspired by what God tells me to do. While some people may look at that kind of strange, but if it’s not helpful to humanity then I don’t really want to do it. If I can’t serve people through making a living then I don’t think it’s worth it.” Moore believes that it has benefited him to give in order to receive and every business that he has reflects that purpose. He recognized that there was a housing shortage and a homeless crisis and therefore decided to open and affordable transitional living home. “We pride ourselves on having a transitional living home that reflects a very comfortable living quarters so that people would feel like they are at home,” he stated. The hair salon business came about from one of his best friends who were a hairdresser and the two saw the similarities in their businesses. His male friend decided to open his own hair salon and commissioned Moore to build it for him. Garrett Grills opened Family Affair Hair Salon with his family as the primary employees. Unfortunately, two years ago he died leaving the salon and his family with a tremendous void. Moore felt it was his obligation to step in and keep the salon open and retain Grills’ family as the primary staff. “They would not have had anywhere to work, so I took it over.” When asked which of the businesses
are closest to his heart, Moore wrestled with the question for a bit. “I like to build and I like closing gaps between people. Primarily I like to bring African American people together so that we can find our way in society.” The construction was initially the closest to his heart because it allowed for him to train men of color through his non-profit. Now as he is evolving, the cigar culture has peaked his interest because of the connectivity to a broader environment of individuals in business that has the potential to impact his vision. Thus LA Lounge offers the prospects to promote the humanity that Moore desires while also bridging individuals who can impact culture and community.
More Professionals Could Remain Contractors Under New AB 5 Exemptions Quinci LeGardye | California Black
After months of protests and tough negotiations with representatives from various industries, California lawmakers have released an updated list of professions that could be exempted from AB 5, the controversial worker reclassification law that went into effect Jan 1. AB 2257, a new bill that revises some Labor Code sections affected by AB 5, will exempt artists, appraisers, insurance field representatives and youth sports coaches, allowing them to work as independent contractors. This is in addition to previous exemptions made for musicians, writers, photographers, tutors, interpreters and other industries. AB 2257 is backed by Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), who authored AB 5 and has been its primary advocate.
“We have utilized the reasoning in Dynamex, existing case law, and all of the provisions of workers comp and the [Unemployment Insurance] code developed over the last 40 years to try to create a framework for employment in California. We are confident that legitimate [independent contractors] will be able to work as such” said Gonzalez in a Aug. 27 tweet. Assemblymember Christy Smith (D-Santa Clarita), co-author of AB 2257, said, “These clarifications to AB5 create additional industry specific pathways for people to work independently and prevent abuses that hurt workers and small business.” Under AB 5, companies must determine whether their workers are employees according to criteria known as the “ABC” test. Workers can only be classified as independent contractors if
A) Their work is free from control of the hiring entity B) They perform work that is outside the hiring entity’s usual course of business, and C) They have an independent business. AB 5 has been challenged by various industries since it was introduced as a bill. Truck drivers won an injunction that prevented AB 5 from being enforced for their industry on Jan. 16. Recently, a California Superior Court judge ruled that rideshare companies Uber and Lyft must classify their drivers as employees. The judge later paused the injunction after the companies threatened to stop operating in California. Uber and Lyft have also funded a ballot measure along with other rideshare and delivery companies that would exempt the companies from AB 5 restrictions if voters approve it in November. If Gov. Newsom signs AB 2257 into law, it would take effect immediately.

cities. Unfortunately, the LASD’s history of abuse and misconduct is as staggering as its size. I have most recently called for CA Attorney General Becerra to investigate the sheriffs’ murder of Andres Guardado, a young unarmed teen whom the sheriffs shot several times in the back at the height of national protests against the police killings of unarmed Black men. The department has also faced questions in recent weeks about its handling of the death of Robert Fuller, a 24-yearold Black man who was found hanging from a tree. According to a report by The Guardian, public anger with LASD is further exacerbated by allegations that there is a gang of white supremacists within the department prone to Trumplike outbursts, racist harassment, arbitrary stops and searches, and hostile patrolling. According to the Youth Justice Coalition, LA Sheriff’s deputies have killed more than 330 people since 2000. In recent years, the LA region has been one of the deadliest in the country for police violence. According to The Guardian’s reporting, between the LASD and LAPD – the department that polices the city – officers in Los Angeles have on average shot one person every five days. lived in New York, teaching at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture while cutting his teeth on small roles on shows like Law & Order, Third Watch, ER and Lie to Me, eventually landing recurring roles on Lincoln Heights and Persons Unknown. It was Boseman’s turn as Jackie Robinson that cemented his film star status and his performance as T’Challa in Marvel’s Black Panther, that catapulted him to superstardom. Black Panther grew beyond the big screen and became a cultural phenomenon. Boseman, who hails from Anderson South Carolina, gave moviegoers a king who was stoic, powerful and captivating as he led warriors with love, intellect and strategy as they fought to maintain control of their powerful, technologically superior nation, ripe for poaching by outsiders. Much like the Gullah culture of his home state, Boseman was able to effortlessly blend African and American culture to help create a fantastical world on screen that was inspirational and recognizable. Boseman led an all-star cast including Angela Bassett, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Sterling Brown, Winston Duke and Academy award-winning actors Lupita Nyong’o and Forrest Whitaker, holding his own and fortifying his status as a Hollywood superstar. Boseman, who also appeared as T’Challa/Black Panther in Avengers Infinity War and Avengers: End Game, starred in and produced the films 21 Bridges, Marshall and Message from
“We cannot ignore that the killings of Andres Guardado and Dijon Kizzee is happening in the backdrop of a 17-year-old young man in Kenosha, who murdered two protestors who were marching against the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Jacob Blake did not have a weapon and was shot several times in the back. The young white man who murdered two protesters was treated humanely by the police and his vigilante, extrajudicial actions are being praised by some Fox News pundits and implicitly condoned by the President of the United States. Whatever details the Sheriffs leak or reveal over the coming days about why Dijon Kizzee
was shot dead in Westmont, we know for a fact that a Black man stopped while riding his bicycle should not be dead today. I stand with the community in condemning unaccountable rogue sheriffs and police officers who continue to hunt and murder unarmed people of color in our communities. It’s past time for the Attorney General of CA, Xavier Becerra, to intervene and investigate the pattern of abuses at the LA Sheriff’s Department. The department is out of control and has lost the confidence of the community it is supposed to protect. There will be no peace in our streets until the LASD cleans house.”
the King, which he served as Executive Producer. At the time of his death, Boseman was in pre-production as producer on Yasuke, a film about the world’s first Black Samurai in which Boseman was slated to star. In addition to acting and producing, Boseman was also an activist and philanthropist supporting social justice initiatives like Michelle Obama’s #WhenWeAllVote and celebrating fellow Bison Kamala Harris’ history making selection as the Democratic Vice-Presidential nominee for the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, which was his last Twitter post before his death. In 2018, the wonderkind performer delivered a powerful commencement speech at Howard University encouraging students to rise above traumatic experiences and applauding their campus activism. Boseman, who was mentored by fellow Howard University alum Phylicia Rashad and helped financially by Denzel Washington as a student donated $100,000 to #Change4Change, which supports HBCUs in November 2019. The private public figure spent time visiting children suffering from cancer at St. Jude’s Research Center. In April 2020, the actor donated $4.2 million worth of PPE equipment to hospitals serving Black communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The youngest of four, Boseman is survived by his parents Leroy and Carolyn Boseman, siblings Kevin, Dionne and Derrick and wife Taylor Simone Ledward. Boseman was 43.

unless they were prostitutes. After living in Brazil for 8 months I thought for sure I would return to The United States with a new found drive and appreciation for America. In fact, when living in Brazil the only thing I could think about was how proud I was to be an American. However, when I returned to the US I had a new set of eyes and to my surprise the United States had way too many similarities. It made me uncomfortable. I had been living 19 years in my own elitist bubble in America, so I never realized the degree to which systemic racism existed. Then as I got older I would experience it first hand. It feels awful to have someone, especially someone with authority, look down on you without knowing anything about you and assume the worst. This happens far too often for black Americans. Black people are held back from jobs, sentenced to longer prison terms, removed from their children, exploited and killed by the police because WE ARE NOT HUMANIZED. Sure, we have Oprah and Tyler Perry who have beaten the odds, but with all odds against us from liberal Hollywood that exploits us to conservatives that imprison us, the only way to truly make it out the Matrix is with God’s Grace. When we humanize blackness in America, America’s economy will rise to an extraordinary level of greatness.
