PepsiCo pours trust into Inglewood

PepsiCo West Division President Kris Licht Excited about commitment to OUR community By Kenneth Miller, Publisher

SoFi Stadium hosted its first official tailgate party Oct. 10, but what followed Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen hotdogs and PepsiCo beverages was not an NFL game featuring the Chargers or Rams. Instead it was hip hot icon Warren G. as the featured attraction during a celebration for more than 3,000 construction workers who are responsible for what will be a world class sports and entertainment destination in Inglewood. The occasion also announced the landmark PepsiCo and Hollywood Park partnership’s expansive agreement between PepsiCo, SoFi Stadium and the Los Angeles Rams. As a result PepsiCo and Frito-Lay will be the exclusive soft drink and salty snack partners of the new multi billion-dollar stadium. The partnership extends across both the Rams and Chargers, PepsiCo has enjoyed an existing partnership with the Chargers for 15 years, but it’s the first of such with the Rams. While SoFi Stadium is garnering much the attention, adjacent to the stadium and under the same roof will be the 2.5 acre American Airlines Plaza which will feature a 6,000 seat performance venue, capable of hosting a variety of events throughout the year, including esports, award shows, concerts and more. Moreover, the mixed use development will also feature a mix of residential, retail, commercial spaces and more than 20 acres of park space for the community to enjoy. Continued on page 2

Twice is nice for local restaurateurs By Francis Taylor, Senior Writer

Building on the success of their first restaurant in the City of Inglewood at 119 East Regent Street, at the corner of Regent and La Brea, husband and wife team, Ricardo Gonzales and Lili Canjura, recently opened their second restaurant, publicly applauded by Council Member Alex Padilla, at last week’s City Council Meeting, located

at 411 North La Brea. Ricardo had been a chef in an upscale West Los Angeles eatery for a number of years and mastered the art of preparing healthy meals, with fresh ingredients and higher prices that are

typical in West LA. He wanted to offer a broad range of healthy food choices to Inglewood residents at a more affordable price and that formula has worked at the Regent Street restaurant where sales have increased in each of the last six years.

“My inspiration came,” Ricardo explained, “following my emergency hospitalization with high blood pressure and diabetes. I decided to treat my condition with a more healthy diet and natural ingredients and over time, I have avoided the need for prescribed medication.” All of the ingredients in Mango Tango’s food Continued on page 7 JOIN US ON

PepsiCo is one of the founding partners in the Hollywood Park project and will have a tremendous presence in the mix development project as well. PepsiCo West Division President Kris Licht was in Inglewood for the SoFi Stadium tailgate tribute and he is really excited about essentially what all of this means to the city of Inglewood. “Pepsi and Pepsi Cola, we’ve done business in this neighborhood and in L.A. more broadly for 84 years,” Licht explained. “We have thousands of our employees that are Angelinos that live and work in theses neighborhoods, including Inglewood. We have a lot of employees that live and work in Inglewood.” Licht stated that one of PepsiCo’s big distributions is in Torrance and that many employees at that location reside in Inglewood. “For us what it means is being more

present and creating more opportunities than we’ve ever done before, but it’s not a new thought for us we’ve been contributing in the neighborhood and creating jobs and we see this as a opportunity to do more of that,” Lich told Inglewood Today. “In addition to that. What’s exciting about having an elite sports property right here is the way we can tie that into youth sports, both through our Gatorade brand, but really through multiple brands in our portfolio we are already doing a lot to support grass roots sports in the community, and we think we have an opportunity to take that to the next level now.” The Chargers have been a great partner for PepsiCo and Licht says he’s also thrilled about being able to work with the Rams. “The Chargers have been a great partner for us, our partnership extends back 15 years and we’ve done a lot together and we really value that relationship. The fact that we can now also have a rich partnership with the Rams is just terrific. The Rams is a great organization and its a beloved franchise and it sort has the market cornered as it relates to L.A. football and that’s a great thing for us.” The Hollywood Park development is most specific to Inglewood. “The best part about this development, the total Hollywood Park development is that it’s not just the stadium. Now, this is one incredible stadium, but in addition to that it’s retail, its restaurants, it’s parks that are available and open to the public that are going to be beautiful. I believe there are going to be public basketball courts, a lot of places where people can come and have fun with their family, spend time with friends, play sports, listen to music and have a good time in the community in ways that didn’t exist before,” Licht elaborated. Licht says that he has already spent a lot of time thinking about ways to partner with various community organizations. “We spent a lot of time thinking through ways we want to partner with Sofi Stadium in the culinary agenda for Sofi and I think there are some really smart choices that have been made. Basically, the culinary direction is going to be about local L.A. food and that’s terrific because L.A. food is one of the best things about L.A. Many different cuisines that sort of define the city and what we want to do is pair up our portfolio of snacks and beverages to get the perfect paring of different culinary experiences and beverages. We will bring in some unique things, things that we are not doing across the country.” As specifically for the city of Inglewood, Licht says the number one thing that PepsiCo can do for the community is to create good paying jobs. “Good paying jobs that will allow of us to invest in our business to create more good paying jobs. That’s the number one thing I think we can do. Number two is whether its through youth sports and athletics, whether it be through schools and supporting beautification through schools and other initiatives, just to make sure students have the right supplies in good conditions and those are the things that we care deeply about and that we want

It is as if PepsiCo has stepped up to the alter, asking Inglewood for a partner in marriage. A commitment that is sustainable beyond its most cherished brands within its massive portfolio. Dotson, District 1, requesting approval of City Sponsorship for the 7th Annual District 1 Toy Drive Celebration, to be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Inglewood Senior Center located at 111 North Locust Street. Before the meeting was adjourned, Council Member Padilla invited the community to participate in the Dia De los Muertos or Day of the Dead 2019 event in the City of Inglewood on October 20th at the Inglewood Park Cemetery.

By Francis Taylor, Senior Writer

This week’s comparatively short City Council Meeting was highlighted by a presentation by Lisa Trifiletti of Trifiletti Consulting Group and Sanjeev Shah of Sanjeev Shah, Inc., on the subject of Delivering and Operating the Inglewood Transit Connector (ITC); Current Issues to Resolve. Beginning with an overview of the Los Angeles Stadium & Entertainment District’s (LASED) Plans including an operational NFL Stadium in the fall of 2020, Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles Philharmonic – 2020, Super Bowl LVI – Winter 2022, Los Angeles Clippers Arena – Fall 2014. FIFA World Cup – Summer 2026 and Olympic Ceremonies – Summer 2028, Trifiletti described the most significant events that are coming to the City of Inglewood.

She also provided an overview of LASED’s Development plans in addition to the 70,000 seat stadium including a 6,000 seat performing arts venue, public parks and 25 acres of open space with pedestrian walkways, bike paths and a lake, 850,000 square feet (SF) of retail space, 750,000sf of office space, 2,500 residential units and a 300 room hotel. Regional Mobility to and from the City of Inglewood will be improved in 2020 with the Metro Crenshaw/LAX Line that will connect the city to LAX, West Los Angeles, Downtown Los Angeles, South Bay and the balance of the counties transit line. However, that line does not directly connect to Inglewood’s exciting new developments. Therefore, the Inglewood Transit Connector Project that is being considered is a proposed 1.8 mile long system with five stations that connect the Metro Crenshaw/LAX Line, Downtown Inglewood, The Forum, Hollywood Park, the proposed Los Angeles Clippers Arena, and a proposed maintenance and storage facility. The system will be designed to accommo-

council authorized funds to complete purchases previously approved in Fiscal Year 2018-2019, and for new expenditures and the Purchase and Sale Agreement between the City of Inglewood and Grand Pacific 7-28 LLC, to secure 53 square feet of right of way from the larger parcel located at 3900 W. Century Boulevard needed to im-

date 9,500 passengers per hour at peak hours. The cost estimates for the project include approximately $754 M Capital Costs, $100 M Land Acquisition costs, $225 M Soft Costs and Contingencies, and $17.5 M annual Operations and Maintenance costs. Now is the time for the city to explain to state, regional and private funding parties many things to secure funding including the delivery method of the entire project, the governance of the project as it is being developed, the city’s readiness to proceed with design, construction and finance. Finally, the most challenging element is ho will it fund/finance the project. While much preliminary work has been completed, there is much more work to be done before an ITC may be realized in the City of Inglewood. The city’s consultants are proceeding with preparing final decisions on delivery and governance, budget/resources to sand up to procurement governance, stakeholder outreach, drafting essential city ordinances and the engagement of private sector developers. Another patsy on deck for Inglewood

By Dave Smith, Exclusive for Inglewood Today

In all my years covering the Lakers and Clippers, this is the first time they’ve both been really good at the same time; so with both teams among the betting favorites to win the NBA championship, 2019-20 is going to be an interesting and exciting season of basketball in Los Angeles. So the question is this: Which team is better? Without question it’s the Clippers. While you could make an argument the Lakers have a slight edge among the starters, the Clippers depth, defense and coaching give them a clear edge. In Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, the Clippers have a couple of the best two-way players in the league; add ball hawk Patrick Beverly to the mix and the Clips have three lockdown defenders and an elite defensive unit. In Doc Rivers, the Clippers have an championship coach who is highly respected around the NBA. In contrast, the Lakers have journeyman Frank Vogel, recently fired by the Orlando Magic and the last man standing after several other coaches turned them down. And do we really need to compare the Clippers front office of Jerry West, Lawrence Frank and Michael Winger to Rob Pelinka, Kurt Rambis and Linda Rambis? No, I didn’t think so. LeBron James remains the best player in the NBA and now has another superstar alongside him in Anthony Davis; but Davis usually misses 15-20 games a year due to injury and with LeBron now 35 the Lakers are going to have to keep AD healthy to make a championship run. And now we learn Davis is already injured, spraining his thumb in an exhibition game. The Clippers have a legit superstar and Two-Time World Champion in Kawhi Leonard, another star in Paul George and both players are under 30. Throw in an excellent coach, a Continued on page 6

With Mack 10 blasting in the background, the Inglewood Sentinels scored the most points in a half since 2013, ripping 67 off against lowly West on their way to a 77-0 shellacking to improve to 7-0 on Oct. 11 at Caroline Coleman Stadium. The Sentinels have averaged 56

points per game, while only allowing 8.2 and will travel to play winless Torrance (0-7) on Friday Oct. 18. While 77 points is eye opening, the Sentinels scored 139 points in a game against Los Angeles Military Academy in 1913. Inglewood coach Mil’Von James is guiding the Sentinel to their best season in 30 years. The Sentinels are ranked

No. 2 behind Alhambra in the CIFSouthern Section Division 13 rankings. Meanwhile, across town, another Inglewood high school, Morningside is having a tough go of it. The Monarchs (1-6) will play host to South Torrance (4-3 at Caroline Coleman Stadium on Oct. 18.

Rams trade for Jaguars CB Jalen Ramsey IT News Wire

The Los Angeles Rams have acquired CB Jalen Ramsey from the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a 2020 first-round pick, a 2021 first-round pick and a 2021 fourth-round pick. The fifth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Ramsey has amassed 210 tackles, nine interceptions, 45 pass breakups and two forced fumbles in 51 career games. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and former first-team All-Pro selection. With Aqib Talib going on injured reserve and Marcus Peters getting dealt to the Ravens, cornerback was going to be a big need for the Rams. They addressed it in a big way Tuesday afternoon.

Smithsonian obtains ABFF archives IT News Wire

ABFF Ventures, LLC., announced that objects, photographs, documents and other memorabilia from The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) archives have been acquired by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. The items will join the museums’ permanent collection and commemorate the ABFF’s rich 24-year history. The American Black Film Festival (formerly Acapulco Black Film Festival), was first held in June 1997 by its original founders, Jeff Friday, Byron E. Lewis and Warrington Hudlin. In 2002, the Festival moved stateside to continue its commitment to community, providing a platform for up-and-coming filmmakers of color and bringing together creatives in appreciation of one another’s work, to challenge, encourage and uplift each other. ABFF is dedicated to recognizing black talent and showcasing quality film and television content by and about people of African descent, and

continues to be a vehicle to strengthen the black entertainment community by fostering resource sharing, education and artistic collaboration. Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), Stephen Caple, Jr. (Creed II), Will Packer (Girls Trip), Issa Rae (Insecure), Omari Hardwick (Power) and Kevin Hart (Night School), are among the beneficiaries of ABFF’s unique and prestigious talent pipeline programs designed to identify, introduce and showcase artists — including directors, actors, writers and other content creators — to the industry at large. The museum has selected 10 American Black Film Festival artifacts to join its historical collection: • Awards: ABFF Wood Trophy/ Award designed by fine artist and sculptor Cheryl R. Riley, presented to Bill Duke in 1997 for Distinguished Career Achievement as a Filmmaker • Documents: 1997 ABFF Program Guide, 1997 ABFF All Access Pass and VIP Pass, “Hav Plenty” VHS video tape (1997) • Photographs: A collection of six (6) photographs of celebrity attendees by photographer Karl Crutchfield. Celebrities include Bill Duke, Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, and more. • Objects: Watch, Sterling Silver Necklace, Sterling Silver Bracelet. Items given to VIP attendees at the 1997 Festival. Recipients included: Debbie Allen, Morgan Freemen, Halle Berry and more. “Recognizing the cultural significance and historical import of the longstanding American Black Film Festival, it is thrilling to have objects from ABFF join the museum’s permanent collection. For nearly a quarter century, ABFF has been at the forefront of celebrating the history and cultural value of African American storytelling and image-making, so receiving objects that highlight the vision and creative spirit of

ABFF was deeply important,” said Rhea Combs, Supervisory Museum Curator of Photography & Film, Smithsonian, National Museum of African American History and Culture. “Being a part of the NMAAHC’s prestigious collection of historical artifacts is an amazing honor and significant milestone for the ABFF. It brings a great sense of pride and excitement that ABFF’s legacy is recognized as an important piece of African American history and culture,” said Jeff Friday, ABFF Ventures CEO. The American Black Film Festival has been helmed a “top Festival” by reputable media outlets, including One of the Coolest Festivals in the World by MovieMake Magazine; 10 Best Film Festivals by USA Today; Top 100 Events in Miami by BizBash Magazine and One of the Best Events Around the World by PROHBTD. ABFF Ventures continues to expand the Festival programming initiatives and will grow its brand year-round to include the About Women Conference, ABFF Global Series (ABFF London debuted September 2019), ABFF Fit (Health and Wellness series) and ABFF Honors (annual awards show honoring Hollywood creatives).

Bradford Bill Helping Equity Applicants Enter Cannabis Industry Signed Into Law Imglewood Today News

SACRAMENTO – Governor Newsom signed Senate Bill 595, which builds upon Senator Bradford’s work last year with SB 1294: The California Cannabis Equity Act. SB 595 supports local needsbased and equity applicants by providing state cannabis licensing fee waivers and fee deferrals. “Now that adult recreational use of cannabis is legal and our regulatory framework is established, the question that remains is who is allowed to participate in the industry,” said Senator Steven Brad-

only good to eat, they are also good for you.” Describing his salad dressings for example, which are among his popular food selections, Ricardo explained that he uses ginger, garlic, herbs, olive oil and ‘love.’ The second Mango Tango features all of the choices that established their brand on Regent Street. The Mango Salad, Tuna Salad and Sandwich are popular favorites. Combined with their Kale and Greens and Classic Caesar Salads, as well as The Wedge, with

avocado, Persian Cucumber, mango, blue cheese crumbles and ranch, are among their most healthy dishes. The BBQ Chicken, Tuna and Curried Chicken and Greens add more protein to the popular salad choices. Mango Tango’s Quick Bite choices, Morning Handhelds, Classic Handhelds, Paninis, Wraps, and wide burger selections with typical side offerings, round out the food choices. Each food item may be washed down with your choice of Smoothies & Bowls or Raw Juices.

Ricardo and Lili have exciting plans for the space behind their second restaurant. Within the next few months, they plan to build a deck and outside eating and entertainment area that will accommodate weddings, dinner parties, special events and of course, expanded family dining. The improved restaurant is expected to be ready in 2020 but meanwhile, individuals and families may enjoy the food fare at Mango Tango immediately!

ford (D-Gardena). “The fact of the matter is there are not enough people of color, women and especially those who have been negatively and disproportionately harmed by our war on drugs included in the burgeoning industry. This measure is one of many ways the State of California is recognizing the barriers and addressing them before it is too late.” SB 595 helps achieve the goal of creating an inclusive and equitable industry by requiring the three state licensing authorities — Bureau of Cannabis Control, Department of Public Health, and Department of Food and Agriculture — to develop and implement a program to provide a fee deferral or waive the fee to obtain or renew a state license for needs-based, local equity applicants and licensees. Last

year, the Legislature approved and the Governor signed the California Cannabis Equity Act, authored by Senator Bradford, which provided $10 million in funding to local jurisdictions that have adopted or implemented a local equity program. Additionally, the act created four positions at the Bureau of Cannabis Control for direct technical assistance to local jurisdictions. This year, Bradford continued his efforts, along with the support of Governor Newsom, by securing an additional $30 million in state funding for cannabis equity. “SB 595 by Senator Bradford is a significant step toward removing barriers for social equity applicants seeking to enter the cannabis industry,” said Jennette Zanipatin, California State Director, Drug Policy Alliance, who were co-sponsors of

SB 1294 last year and SB 595 this year. “This bill provides additional resources that can help individuals and those communities most impacted by the Drug War, with new opportunities to join the regulated cannabis market, growing wealth for themselves, their families and communities.” “If we want our legalized market to succeed, we must not only focus on the issues pertaining to licensing and enforcement, we must also prioritize equity,” continued Bradford. “My ultimate goal is to have a cannabis industry — and all California industries for that matter — that is safe, accessible, serves the needs of constituents, but also reflects the demographics of our local communities and the greater diversity across our state.”
