INGLEWOOD P.D. ANNOUNCES

MEMORIAL DAY DUI INGLEWOOD AND MORNINGSIDE SENIORS;

ENFORCEMENT CRACKDOWN Additional Officers to look for alcohol and drug impaired drivers INGLEWOOD TODAY Newswire

If you plan to spend time outdoors for backyard barbeques or recreational activities at local parks this Memorial Day Weekend, remember to do so responsibly. Alcohol and marijuana may be included in these gatherings. Tragically, Memorial Day marks the start of California’s 100 dangerous days of summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. In 2016, 16 people were killed and another 385 injured in alcohol involved collisions over the Memorial Day weekend. Sixteen people were killed and 377 injured over the 2016 Labor Day weekend. To reduce DUI-related collisions resulting in injuries or deaths, the Inglewood Police Department will deploy additional officers for a DUI / Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday May 25, 2018 between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. The goal of the checkpoint is to stop and arrest drivers showing signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. The checkpoint will be at an undisclosed location within the city limits and in an area with a history of DUI crashes and arrests. The Inglewood Police Department joins the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to drive awareness on the best ways to get from point A to point B safely. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, many police and sheriff departments in addition to the CHP will use OTS grant funds for overtime to deploy officers across the state to aggressively ticket or arrest traffic violators. High visibly enforcement operations will be in place all summer. In recent years, California has seen an increase in drug-impaired driving crashes. Inglewood PD reminds drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana use can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI. In addition to stopping and arresting impaired drivers, officers will watch for aggressive drivers. Those who speed, tailgate, fail to obey traffic signs and signals, and those driving distracted, will be cited.

DON’T ‘WANNA’ GO TO COLLEGE? INGLEWOOD TODAY Newswire

A college education is not in the cards for everyone, for a variety of reasons. In fact, a college degree may not be needed to be prepared for the jobs of the future. Udemy for Business, and other online firms, offer an alternative learning approach for some students who cannot or do not want to continue their learning in a traditional fashion. See below. Algorithms are coming for their jobs, so workers are teaching themselves algorithms When cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes started automating its quality assurance testing last year, it knew that the move could put more than four dozen employees out of work. Rather than simply replacing them with technology though, the Santa Clara, Calif., firm turned to tech to save their jobs. The company signed up with Udemy for Business, an online learning

platform that teaches courses ranging from data science to sourdough breadmaking. Malwarebytes identified the skills its quality assurance testers would need to stay relevant in the rapidly changing cybersecurity industry. As automation becomes ubiquitous, education start-ups such as Udemy, Coursera and General Assembly are positioning themselves as the nexus between today’s workforce and tomorrow’s jobs. Unlike traditional college programs that can take anywhere from two to four years and tens of thousands of dollars to complete, the online schools frame themselves like vocational programs for the Silicon Valley set. They offer training in a specific skill — say, learning a programming language — in months, rather than years. Coursera offers some of its courses for free but also has programs where it charges up-

ward of a few hundred dollars. Udemy’s courses for individuals start at $10.99, while its enterprise-facing arm, Udemy for Business, offers group rates for companies that want to sign up entire teams. Online learning and micro-certification are increasingly appealing to individuals and businesses seeking to future-proof themselves against automation, or introduce automation without having to fire and rehire a more highly skilled workforce. With automation predicted to displace as many as 73 million, or a third, of U.S. workers by 2030, futurists and automation experts say that retraining at every stage of a person’s career will probably be the most viable path for those who intend to keep working. The quality assurance testers at Malwarebytes, for example, previously

BARACK AND MICHELLE OBAMA; LAUNCHING HIGHER GROUND PRODUCTIONS

Barack and Michelle Obama are getting into the television business with Monday’s announcement that they had signed a multi-year deal with Netflix. The former president and first lady have formed their own production company, Higher Ground Productions, for the material. In announcing a deal that had been rumored since March, Netflix offered no specifics on what shows they

would make. Netflix said the Obamas would make “a diverse mix of content,” potentially including scripted and unscripted series, documentaries or features. “We hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the

wider world,” Barack Obama said in Netflix’s announcement. The Obamas can be expected to participate in some of the programming onscreen, said a person familiar with the deal, not authorized to talk publicly about it, on condition of anonymity. The programming itself is not expected to be partisan in nature; a president who often derided the way things were covered on cable news won’t be joining in. The type of people that Obama — like other presidents — brought forward as guests at his State of the Union addresses would likely provide fodder for the kinds of stories they want to tell. “Barack and I have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others,” Michelle Obama said.

MONEY MANAGEMENT 101

PRESIDENT/PUBLISHER/ EDITOR Willie Brown VICE PRESIDENT Gloria Kennedy

Schools didn’t teach money management so we’ve had to find our way on our own. It’s never too late to learn a new trick or two, so here’s what I’ve picked up. Make one extra payment on your mortgage and/or your car loan annually. Doing so will cut the amount of interest you’ll pay over the life of the loan and you’ll pay it off sooner. If you have credit card debt, pay more than the minimum each month. More than one card? Pay the minimum on the lowest amount, but put all you can toward the highest card until it’s cleared. Credit scores affect everything we do, so keep a strong score by watching the debit vs available credit ratio. The ratio should be between 20 and 30%. Seems strange, but having it at 0% actually hurts you. Keeping ‘good debt’ is important. This is a student loan for college, a mortgage to buy a house, things that are going to increase in value or increase earning potential in the future. Wait at least six months between credit card applications to increase your approval chance. If you have a great score, make lots of money, and always pay on time, you may apply for more cards more frequently because the companies want your busi-

ness. Since the Recession, interest rates are in the dumper. However, you still need to do the best you can with savings accounts and CDs. Your local bank – even the one you’ve used for years – probably doesn’t have the best interest rates. Look at online banks. They can offer better rates because they don’t have buildings or thousands of employees to pay. Are they secure? You bet! I’ve had an account with an online bank for 12 years. In order to access your money, it

is tied to a brick-and-mortar bank so you ask the online bank and in 2-3 days, your money is in your local account. It is a very good way to save. We always hear about diversity in our financial portfolios. So one needs a bit a stock, too. The basic rule of finance is ‘buy low, sell high’. The great Warren Buffet (the 3rd richest man in America) offers this common sense advice for stock purchasing: Invest in what you know. Research companies before investing. Don’t listen to what’s trendy. Keep your costs low and invest in stocks as you would real estate. Sell when you must or when you feel the market is right, but not when others say to do so. Hang on for the long term to see your profit potential. Buffet says if you won’t think about owning a stock for 10 years, don’t even consider owning it for 10 minutes. He doesn’t think about it as buying stock, he invests in companies and we should too. Lastly, Warren Buffet says to invest in quality. Successful, well-made and thoughtout products often mean the companies will have an advantage in the marketplace. I hope this will help with your financial picture.

But even the most optimistic of futurists aren’t convinced that America’s education system is equipped to retrain the nation’s more than 126 million fulltime workers. The jobs of the future will probably need more education than the K-12 system currently provides, according to Byron Reese, author of “The Fourth Age: Smart Robots, Conscious Computers, and the Future of Humanity.” This is where education platforms

STACEY ABRAMS Makes history winning Georgia Democratic primary in bid to become first Black Female Governor.

Georgia Democrats chose Atlanta lawyer Stacey Abrams to be their nominee for Governor. Republican candidates there are in a runoff. Texas Democrats nominated Former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez to take on Republican Governor Greg Abbott. WASHINGTON — Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams won the Democratic primary Tuesday, bringing her a step closer to becoming the nation’s first African-American woman governor. In one of the night’s closely watched primaries, the former state House minority leader beat former state Rep. Stacey Evans, the Associated Press announced. “We are writing the next chapter of Georgia’s future where no one is unseen, no one is unheard and no one is uninspired,” Abrams said during a rousing speech at her post-election party. “We are writing a history of a Georgia where we prosper together.” In the GOP gubernatorial primary, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp advanced to a runoff on July 24. The candidates needed 50% of the vote, plus one ballot, to avoid a runoff election. Georgia state Sen. Michael Williams, the GOP candidate who made headlines with his “deportation bus,” only received 5% of the vote. The candidates are vying to replace Republican Gov. Nathan Deal, who is term-limited. Georgia has elected Republican governors since 2003 and the state voted for President Trump, albeit with just over 50% of the vote. The state has never elected a woman governor. Georgia Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams declared victory in the primary during an election night event on May 22, 2018 in Atlanta. such as Udemy, Coursera and General Assembly seek to make a mark, helping individuals and employers plug skills gaps that will arise from automation — and profiting from it. Already, the online schools have seen a surge in sign-ups from businesses that want to retrain entire teams within their workforce. Since launching Coursera for Business, its business-facing service nearly two years ago, Coursera, which is backed by venture capital firms such as Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers and New Enterprise Associates, now has more than 1,000 employers on board. Udemy, which has raised funding from firms such as Stripes Group and Norwest Venture Partners, declined to say how many companies it currently works with, but said it counts PayPal, Lyft, Pinterest and Booking.com among

its customers. Udemy for Business has grown 265% in the last year. CITY COUNCIL MEETING CANCELLED FOCUS ON COMMUNITY FORUM By Francis Taylor, Asst. Editor (email: francis_taylor@sbcglobal.net)

In a recent community forum, someone launched a rigorous discussion about the benefit the new stadium development will deliver to the citizens of Inglewood. The post indicated that the stadium cost was at $4 billion and it prompted a broad range of comments from those who seem to oppose the new development as well as those who feel the stadium and related development projects will be a boon to Inglewood’s economy. Here is a collection of comments, with the individual’s initials, instead of their full names, published to conceal their identity: JR said $4 billion of private money from Kroenke. So it’s all good. BM said, Benefits: Black folks will be able to sell bootleg T-shirts after the games. ADS said, OK, let’s have nothing; no stadium, no complex, no new rail system

and see what that gets us. This discussion is tiring. Yes, the schools suck, I guess, but with the added tax revenues and new residents with deep pockets, they’re going to get better. Everything is going to get better except traffic. Beyond that, it’s a win, win, win. So, stop it. BD said Rams only play 16 games per season, half on the road. DS said Property values will go through the roof. I can’t wait to raise rent in my apartment building. Imagine the possibilities. JC said the stadium is only ONE of the developments coming that will RETURN Inglewood to being ‘The Jewel of the South Bay.’ JG said to some degree I’m happy but I hope my rent doesn’t turn into Santa Monica Rent. KO said Inglewood was the city of the

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD

VOTE IN THE PRIMARY

ELECTION ON

Continued from page 1

JUNE 5

The June 5th primary election is important to Californians, as are all elections because there is no greater right than the right to vote. America’s democracy thrives when every eligible voter participates. Through voting, you can select your local, state and national leaders and ensure that your voice is heard. The Statewide Direct Primary is Tuesday, June 5. The election is fast approaching and I join our Secretary of State, Alex Padilla, in encouraging INGLEWOOD TODAY readers to participate in your most fundamental right as a citizen of the United States of America. In addition to the important date of June 5th, Election Day, the second most important date to remember is May, 29th, the last day to apply for a vote-by-mail ballot, if you will not be able to visit your normal voting place on Election Day. On the state level, California voters will decide who will be in the general election for the most important statewide positions including U.S. senate candidates, governor candidates, Lieutenant governor candidates, secretary of state candidates, controller candidates, treasurer candidates, attorney general candidates, insurance commissioner candidates, board of equalization candidates, and superintendent of public instruction candidates. If you are unfamiliar with the candidates who are on the primary ballot, I urge you to ‘do your homework’ and discover which candidate is best aligned with your values and the policies you support. The secretary of state has published an Official Voter Information Guide that features all of the information you need to make an informed voting decision. Candidate statements usually provide an overview of their background, experience and position on a range of policy issues. The guide also provides information about the various propositions on the June 5th ballot. This time, voters will decide on the following measures: Prop 68 authorizes Bonds Funding Parks, Natural Resources Protection, Climate

Adaption, Water Quality and Supply and Flood Protection. Prop 69 requires that certain new transportation revenues be used for transportation purposes and a legislative constitutional amendment. Prop 70 requires legislative supermajority vote approving use of Capand-Trade Reserve Fund and a legislative constitutional amendment. Prop 71 sets effective date for ballot measures with a legislative constitutional amendment Prop 72 permits legislature to exclude newly constructed rain-capture systems from property-tax reassessment requirement with a legislative constitutional amendment. The voter guide also provides a description of the top contributors to statewide candidates and ballot measures and an overview of the state bond debt. The information is a reference for voters and can help you make informed decisions. It includes impartial analysis, arguments in favor and against numerous ballot measures, declarations of the candidates, the Voter Bill of Rights and other important information. This guide is also available online on the California Secretary of State website: www.VoterGuide.sos.ca.gov. If you have any questions about how to vote, or how to register to vote, you can contact the office of the Secretary of State by calling toll free 1-800-345VOTE (8683). To obtain the contact information of your local county elections officials, visit the Secretary of State website at: www.sos.ca.gov/countyelections-offices. Even though the City of Inglewood does not have any municipal candidates in this year’s primary election, I strongly urge you to make your voice be heard on June 5th. Your vote is important. Your vote is your voice. VOTE!

Your Future Is Greater Than Your Past. Think, Act, Believe, and Own it.

No content from the deal is expected to be available until at least 2019, said the person familiar with the deal. The former president appeared in January on David Letterman’s Netflix talk show, “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.” Obama is said to be friendly with Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer, and discussions for other programming were already under way. “We are incredibly proud they have chosen to make Netflix the home for their formidable storytelling abilities,” Sarandos said.

Netflix has 125 million subscribers worldwide. The company has always been reluctant to discuss how many people watch its programming, but it clearly dominates the growing market for streaming services. Roughly 10 percent of television viewing now is through these services, the Nielsen company said. Forty-nine percent of streaming being viewed now comes through Netflix, and no other service comes close, Nielsen said.

WNBA Sparks play home opener Sunday The Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA will play their first home game of the 2018 season on Sunday against the Phoenix Mercury at 2 p.m. at the Staples Center. This will be the first of five straight home games for the Sparks. Last year the Sparks reached the WNBA finals before losing to Minnesota Lynx in five games. This year they appear to be ready to go deep into the playoffs again after they beat the Lynx 77-76 in a season opening game in Minneapolis last Sunday. The Sparks beat the Lynx without two of their best players, 6’4”Candace Parker and 6’4” Jantel Lavender. Parker is resting a bad back and Lavender is still overseas but the Sparks were able to win against a team that has arguably the best player in the WNBA in Maya Moore. After the Phoenix game the Sparks play Minnesota again on Sunday, June 3, at 2 p.m., they face Seattle on Thursday, June 7, at 7:30 p.m., they battle Chicago Sunday, June 10, at 2 p.m. and their last game of the home stand will be against Atlanta on Tuesday, June 12, at 7:30 p.m. This year the Sparks will rely on guards Alana Beard, Odyssey Sims, Riquna Williams, Chelsea Gray, Essence Carson, Sydney Wiese and Cappie Pondexter. The front line will be led by Parker, Nneka Ogwumike and Lavender. The Sparks have one of the best coaches in the WNBA in Brian Agler. Agler has coached Seattle and Los Angeles to WNBA championships. The last time the Sparks won the championship was 2016.

INGLEWOOD AND MORNINGSIDE SENIORS;

DON’T ‘WANNA’ GO TO COLLEGE? Continued from page 3 teed high-salaried job placements, but failed to deliver, according to regulators. The school was fined $50,000 by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education in 2016 for making false statements and ordered to shut down. And even if schools do right by students and don’t overpromise, they still aren’t a panacea. Reese likened them to home exercise equipment — completion rates are low, and you only get as much out of it as you put into it. There’s also irony in the fact that these online schools purport to help students stay relevant in the labor market while they themselves pose a potential threat to the relevance of the existing education industry. Where traditional education institutions might hire many instructors to teach a course, online learning allows for lessons to be disseminated to an endless number of students, bypassing the facultyintensive model. A more radical idea is to make junior college free for everyone, or to extend high school through grade 14, Reese said. The extra two years could be vocational for some students and pre-university for others. It wouldn’t be unprecedented: At the dawn of

the 20th century when most American children left school before eighth grade, America was one of the first countries in the world to guarantee a high school education under the premise that the jobs of the future would require more education. “This, as much as anything, propelled the U.S. into the preeminent economic position it continues to enjoy,” Reese said. “Now we are at that same place again.” In lieu of major shifts in the public education system, Gabe Batstone, chief executive of Contextere, a company that provides artificial-intelligence tools to blue-collar workers to increase their productivity, says companies, individuals and government need to be proactive in training workers and finding ways to support those who can’t retrain. Companies have a responsibility to their employees, governments have a responsibility to their constituents, and “we all have individual accountability,” Batstone said. “We all have to take ownership of what we want to do, assess the skills we have and the ones we don’t but want, and go get them.”

COMMUNITY

SOUTH BAY WORKFORCE INVESTMENT BOARD:

BROAD RANGE OF SERVICES BENEFIT ADULTS, YOUTH AND BUSINESSES By INGLEWOOD Newswire

For more than 35 years, The South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB) has been a leader in workforce innovation and has been helping job seekers and employers in Inglewood and 10 other South Bay communities with no cost employment services and support.

Under the direction of Executive Director Jan Vogel, the SBWIB operates four One-Stop Business & Career Centers serving adults, youth and small and large businesses in the communities of Carson, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lomita, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach and Torrance. Large and small businesses benefit from the SBWIB’s no cost services and support which include: Apprenticeships and Paid Intern services; Rapid Response & Layoff Aversion planning; Recruitment services; Staff Training Resources;

ETP Funding; Hiring Events & Candidate Screenings; and, Wage Subsidy Programs. The SBWIB has received national awards for performance of workforce development activities for employment and business services, not only within Los Angeles County, but throughout Southern California. The SBWIB has also been recognized for being one of the highest performing Workforce Investment Boards in the state of California. Among the no cost services provided for adults are: Re-entry services – Career Pathways 180; Transitional Subsidized Employment & On-the-Job Training; Veteran Transition & Employment Services; Hiring Events, Outreach & Recruitment, Education & Training; and, Blueprint for Workplace Success Training, Career Counseling & Resume Preparation

The establishment of apprenticeship programs utilizing innovative approaches for employer engagement and job seeker recruitment for both union and non-union apprenticeship models is a major emphasis for the SBWIB. And one of the best examples is the Construction and Utilities Pathways Program which is enabling many Inglewood and South Bay job seekers to gain entry into construction jobs at the new football stadium and entertainment district being constructed in Inglewood and surface transportation and expansion projects around LAX. Another is a pre apprenticeship program in Aerospace Engineering called AERO-Flex. The advanced manufacturing program has quickly evolved into an employer-centric earn and learn model attracting top employers such as Northrop Grum-

man, Lockheed-Martin, L-3 Communications, Impressa Aerospace, Magnetika and many others. This employer driven pre-apprenticeship will ensure advanced manufacturing firms can find the talent they need locally and provide workers with the hands-on experience employers need. Mr. Vogel plans to expand the program statewide and nationally with both the pre apprenticeship program and a registered apprenticeship in engineering. Inglewood youth are receiving educational support and career guidance through the One-Stop Center as well at the SBWIB sponsored Inglewood Teen Center. After school tutoring, career counseling, resume preparation, college preparation services, and job placement services are all provided at no cost.
