Life as we knew it…is Over

Coronavirus pandemic alters everything

By Kenneth Miller, Publisher

It was an early overcast Sunday morning in Inglewood, and gamblers flocked to Hollywood Park Casino on Century to do what they had been doing for years…play cards and bet on horses. However, upon arriving they were met with long lines for the simulcast wagering and counted one by one at the casino. The casino was adhering to state guidelines and was only allowing a maximum of 250 people in for the horse wagering and an equal or smaller

number for the various card games. Then they were informed that at midnight, the casino and Off Track Betting would be suspended for at least two weeks and perhaps even longer. Ironically, just the day before the local restaurant Lavender Blue hosted two-birthday celebration with a live band ensemble for a group of close to 50 people. Balloons floated from the pink boxes of birthday cakes as patrons munched on chicken and drank cocktails. These two stark examples of how life for our community was and is going to

be for the foreseeable future are another example of how the coronavirus has altered the normal routine of the lives of our citizens, regionally, nationally and globally for who knows how long. School closures are rampant throughout, restaurants, bars and small businesses have been restricted, the airline industry crippled to a crawl, cruise lines docked, `churches and places of worship void of souls to save and our global medical professionals baffled beyond belief at the havoc the coronavirus has heaped upon us. Our elected officials, once divided at

From March 17 to April 7, residents in seven counties and one city in the Bay Area have been ordered to “shelter in place” in order to halt the spread of COVID-19, also known as coronavirus disease. The Bay Area jurisdictions are the city of Berkeley and San Mateo, Marin, San Francisco, Alameda, Santa Cruz, Contra Costa and Santa Clara counties.

Public health officials announced the move in direct response to the growing number of people testing positive for COVID-19. As of March 17, an estimated 187,990 people worldwide have tested positive for coronavirus disease and over 7,000 of those infected have died. Across the United States, there have been a total of 4,534 cases and 89 deaths. In California, so far, 450 people have

their core, now unified in their hope that the continued spread of the unknown fatal virus can somehow, someway be contained. Traffic on our streets and highways as shallow as a cave, grocery stores and wholesale distributions raided of essential supplies that were once stocked in abundance supply. Life as we once knew it… The stress of a long day at work can no longer be relieved by the ball game or at a theatre, all of which has been either suspended or cancelled. That is if we still have a place to go to work, owners of 243,000 small businesses, a vital veins our statewide economy grappling with the decision to layoff or close down indefinitely. The National Guard has been directed by the Governor to be prepared to perform humanitarian missions across the state including food distribution, ensuring resiliency of supply lines, as well as supporting public safety as required. “As Californians make sacrifices over the coming weeks and stay home, we are immensely grateful for medical providers, first-responders and National Guard personnel who are assisting those who are most vulnerable to COVID-19,” said Governor Newsom. Today’s announcement, made in the Governor’s capacity as the Commander-in-Chief of the California National Guard, is consistent with duties routinely performed by the California National Guard during natural disasters and other emergencies within the state.

Dear Friends, With public health officials emphasizing social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19, we are closing our offices starting tomorrow but will remain accessible online and via phone. I and my staff are determined to continue serving residents of the Second District and the rest of Los Angeles County during this state of emergency. Do not hesitate to call us at (213) 974-2222 or send us a note. We’re here for you. I highly encourage you to check out my website and Los Angeles County’s COVID-19 webpage. Both are excellent sources of up-to-date and accurate information that you can trust, for example: • Guidelines for protecting yourself from exposure, and how to cope with stress • Tips on how to talk to children and seniors about COVID-19 • Where to get free meals, for example at LAUSD’s Grab & Go Food Centers • How to avoid scams and price gouging, and see if you’re eligible for utility bill relief • Ways for businesses to obtain financial assistance to avert layoffs or apply for disaster loans If we all take the necessary precautions and support each other as a community, I have faith that we can get through this crisis together. With hope,

Hit By Coronavirus Crisis, School Districts Call Time-out: Still Providing Meals Joe W. Bowers Jr. | California Black Media

By Sunday evening, more than 720 of the state’s 1,000 school districts announced they were closing beginning Monday. They made the decision out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of students, parents and staff and with the intent of sharing responsibility with the broader community in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Then, on Monday, county health officials put more than 6.7 million Californians in six Bay Area counties under a “shelter in place” order that instructed residents to stay isolated in their homes and away from public places and human interaction as much as possible. The directive, which took effect Tuesday at 12:01 am and lasts at least through April 7, affects San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Marin, Contra Costa and Alameda counties. The closures are scheduled to last between two to four weeks. In all, more than 95 percent of public school students in 41 of 58 counties will be impacted. Many of the school districts that California’s 334,652 African-American students attend have announced they will be closed. Outside California, more than 33 states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, have announced plans to close schools for two or three weeks. Most of the announcements of school district closings happened on Friday, closely following the closure announcement by the two largest school districts in the state - Los Angeles Unified and San Diego Unified. Los Angeles superintendent Austin Buetner and Cindy Marten, San Diego superintendent, issued a joint statement that read, “California has now entered a critical new phase in the fight to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is evidence the virus is already present in the communities we serve, and our efforts now must be aimed at preventing its spread. We believe closing the state’s two largest school districts will make an important contribution to this effort.” Before deciding to close their schools, the districts consulted with their county offices of education and their public health departments. Many school leaders were concerned about interrupting student learning and the negative effect closures would have on the families that depend on schools to provide meals and other essential social services. Inglewood Unified was one of the

On Friday, Newsom signed an executive order announcing that California schools that close due to the coronavirus outbreak will continue to receive funding, on condition that dollars are directed toward remote learning opportunities and childcare options during workday hours. For school districts like Inglewood Unified and Oakland Unified that are paying off state loans and Los Angeles Unified, which is experiencing budget issues, the governor’s action relieves some of the fiscal strain of closing schools. Given the rapidly changing nature of the coronavirus outbreak and CDC’s guidance, what school districts decide to do after closing for two to four weeks is in flux. It is important for all parents and students to check their District websites for updated information and school districts making the decision to it may not be feasible for districts to follow directives from the California close on Friday. With a student body that administer the tests if school closures Department of Public Health. is 40 percent African American, among are extended. districts with over 2,000 students, Inglewood has the largest percentage of Black students in the state. Los Angeles Unified with 8.4 percent and Oakland Unified with 24 percent respectively have the largest number of AfricanAmerican students. Dr. Erika Torres, Inglewood’s County Administrator, said she decided to close the district’s schools because, “We are concerned about the health, safety and well being of our students and families.” “I wanted to make sure that we were very proactive in this decision,” she said. Like many of the school districts that are closing, Inglewood has no reported cases of coronavirus among students or staff. Even as California banned large public gatherings, Governor Newsom resisted taking steps at the state level to close schools. On Sunday, Newsom defended his approach saying, “I know for a fact that not all these districts have planned for the needs of these kids next week, and I’m deeply concerned about their health and I’m deeply concerned about their safety and I’m deeply concerned about their parents’ inability to go to work and many of those parents work in hospitals, work as firefighters, work as paramedics, work as the people that would get in gear to help us advance the mobile testing (for the virus) throughout the state.” While school leaders were deciding to close schools last Friday, the U.S. Department of Education said it would consider waiving requirements for statewide tests that are mandated for grades 3-8 and high school. With testing set to start during the spring,

The Los Angeles Chargers today placed a tender on cornerback Michael Davis (second round) along with exclusive rights free agents Isaac Rochell and Trent Scott. Davis, a Glendale, Calif., native, has played in 43 games with 21 starts for Los Angeles. Initially signed by the team as an undrafted rookie out of Brigham Young, Davis earned a starting role in his second season. The fourth-year player has posted 87 tackles (69 solo), 18 passes defensed and two interceptions for his career. Selected in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Chargers, Rochell has appeared in 35 games with three starts. He posted a sack in his second career game and, in 2018, recorded 4.5 sacks in a five-game span. In his career, Rochell registered 42 tackles (25 solo), seven sacks, nine tackles for loss and an interception. Scott enters his third NFL season after originally signing with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Grambling State. He appeared in 25 games with 10 starts for his career, with 16 of those appearances and nine starts coming in 2019. In his 10 starts, Scott has blocked for an offense that produced seven performances with a 300-yard passer.

offensive lineman has missed only one regular season game over the last three seasons. When Los Angeles endured an uncharacteristic amount of injuries along the offensive line this past season, he played a crucial role in stabilizing it and helping allow a league-low 22 sacks. He started the season as the team’s starting right guard, then moved

over to center after Brian Allen suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 10. Blythe will enter his fourth season with L.A and fifth overall in 2020. The former University of Iowa standout originally entered the league as a seventh-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2016.

Major League Baseball Statement on Coronavirus

IT News Wire

Following a conference call with all 30 Clubs regarding the recent coronavirus cases around the world, Major League Baseball issued the following statement: “The health and safety of everyone in our communities is of the utmost importance to us. We have been engaging on an ongoing basis with a wide range of public health experts, infectious disease specialists, and governmental agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to obtain the latest information.

“We are regularly conveying the guidance from these experts to Clubs, players, and staff regarding prevention, good hygiene practices and the latest recommendations related to travel. We are continuing to monitor developments and will adjust as necessary. While MLB recognizes the fluidity of this rapidly evolving situation, our current intention is to play Spring Training and regular season games as scheduled. “On a temporary basis, effective on Tuesday, [March 10], only players and essential personnel may enter locker rooms and clubhouses at MLB facilities. In a joint step with other professional sports leagues, we are requiring that

Clubs relocate media availabilities to another area in their facilities. “Clubs will be expected to provide best efforts in facilitating usual media coverage and access to uniformed personnel and team officials in these alternate settings. Access for and coverage by the BBWAA and all media are vital to our game and we hope to resume normal operations as quickly as possible. We appreciate the media’s cooperation with this temporary step, which is being taken out of an abundance of caution for the best interests of all.”

supported Bloomberg because of his moderate position on many of the issues, noting that Bernie was too far to the left and Biden’s views are too far to the right. He also expressed his concern that Biden, the presumptive Democratic candidate to oppose Trump does not have the verbal and mental acuity to compete with Trump on the debate stage and will have an uphill battle defeating him in the general election. Finally, Jim shared his optimism for the City of Inglewood and the economic boon that is underway, once the COVID-19 threat has been neutralized. “The NFL stadium, the proposed NBA arena and the adjacent commercial development in the City of Inglewood will likely challenge City Walk in Downtown Los Angeles for one of the region’s primary entertainment destinations,” Jim said. “In fact, my wife and I are seriously considering a move to Icon at Grace Park, the development under construction that will be in walking distance from the new stadium.” Icon at Grace Park is a new collection of 60 detached auto court style homes that will offer consumer inspired floor plans. This exclusive community will distinguish itself from nearby neighborhoods with a private clubhouse, community pool, and paseos integrated within the community.

EXCLUSIVE: Rory Gamble Named First African American President of the UAW By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior Correspondent

The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) is one of the largest and most diverse unions in North America, with members in virtually every sector of the economy. Representing nearly 1 million current and retired members of all ethnicities and backgrounds in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the UAW has never had an African American president. Until now. “I was sitting at home and brainstorming on things that I needed to do, and then the phone started to ring,” stated Rory Gamble, a welder fixture repairman, who joined the UAW in 1974 when he worked at the Ford Motor Co. Dearborn (Mich.) Frame Plant. “The local NAACP chapter president called, and others,” noted Gamble, who in December was named the 13th president of the 85-year-old union. “It hit me then that, ‘Hey, you’re the first African American president,’” Gamble recalled. “It struck me like a rock. It’s a great accomplishment.” Gamble observed a distinct and frequently-used quote that dates back to

Winston Churchill: “With great power, comes great responsibility.” “There is a great weight that comes with being the first African American president,” Gamble said. “I want to be an example where no one can question my leadership and not use anything against another African American brother or sister to prevent them from being able to ascend to a position like this.” Gamble accepted the job after his predecessor, Gary Jones, resigned amid a corruption scandal. Despite the cloud of suspicion left behind, Gamble observed that the union must continue to move forward. “Being an African American already means you have a great deal of responsibility and so I want to make sure that the way I carry myself will keep the doors open for others to follow,” Gamble expressed during an exclusive interview with NNPA Newswire. “I’ve been blessed. I was able to come up during a time where there was a lot of activism. Unlike today, where a lot of our brothers and sisters get caught up in the digital world, I came up when everything was more hands-on and personal,” Gamble continued.

“You couldn’t hide behind a keyboard. You had to get up and see people and look them in the eye. Looking folks in the eye shows that you have a lot more of yourself invested.” That doesn’t mean Gamble is technologically challenged. “I had to get social media because you have to engage and keep up with the times,” he said. “I’m very personal, and I love engaging with the members. I try hard to make sure that our union doesn’t get away from that even though we have this digital and electronic stuff. That’s fine, but the downside is that it can be icy when it comes to human relationships, so I like the eye-to-eye contact.” “People need to know how important the Black Press is and how important the union is,” Gamble said. “Both have accomplished so much together. We do this by making sure that we use all of the available resources to educate our people and let them know how important and relevant the Black Press and the union is especially when they are functioning together. The things we’ve accomplished to uplift society and our people, in general, is something we need to continue to do together.”
