The minority-owned Grocery Outlet Bargain Market recently opened with great fanfare at 2810 W. Imperial Highway. It is a valuable tool for understanding Black voter attitudes in the state of California. Although the report serves as a key barometer of where statewide primary candidates currently stand relative to their potential share of the Black vote; more importantly, it highlights a range of public policy issues that are most important to Black voters in the state. “California’s African American electorate has a voice through this poll. Our voices, perspectives, and interests are now at the forefront of state policy and politics. African American voters appear positioned to have major impact on who will be the next Governor and United States

Even in an era of mega real estate developments in downtown Los Angeles, the Angels Landing proposal stands out. On a steep, barren hillside next to the landmark Angels Flight railway, develop-

ers plan to erect a $1.2-billion residential, hotel and retail complex anchored by a skyscraper of at least 80 stories that would be one of the tallest buildings west of the Mississippi River.

The process could take several years, but the developers, a trio of minority-owned firms, plan to file an application with the city next month to start the official approval process. The City Council has already granted them an exclusive negotiating agreement to develop the citycontrolled 2.2-acre site at Fourth and Hill streets. Their proposal in December won a city competition among would-be developers who coveted the opportunity to build a large-scale project in the heart of downtown. “It’s basically a neighborhood within a building,” said developer Don Peebles, chairman of New York-based Peebles Corp. “It’s the wave of the future for urban living.” The mixed-use concept for Angels Landing, which includes apartments, condominiums, restaurants and an elementary school, is a dramatic

Tea is mighty healthy for us and each variety has many healing properties. Black Tea has strong anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It can calm diarrhea or bloating. Alkaline in it neutralize acids. Works on that, too. As if all this weren’t enough, a black tea foot soak will kill bacteria, close pores, help feet sweat less and reduce odor. GREEN TEA has polyphenols that are believed to play a big part in cancer prevention by either slowing cell growth or by killing those cells. In a study of 472 women with breast cancer, those who drank the most green tea had the least spread of the disease. Another study done on lab animals showed that those who drank green tea had 1/10th as many tumors as those animals who drank only water. Green tea has been shown to lower the risk of dying from heart disease and stroke, reduce tooth decay (did you know the health of your gums tells a lot about heart health?), and stop or slow a decline in mental ability. Talk about a memory booster. A study

Motion sickness and a hangover cure are also part of ginger’s attributes. Most any herb or spice can be added to tea. Explore using black pepper, thyme, sage, lemon balm, dandelion, orange peel in your tea.

The backyard houses aren’t bound to a single set of dimensions and the rent is subsidized by low income city vouchers, with tenants paying no more than 30% of their monthly income to the homeowner. After 10 years, the city forgives the loan to the landlord altogether.

CITY COUNCIL SWIFTLY APPROVES

The weekly City Council meeting started on time and the council members swiftly discharged a number of staff recommendations by approving those that were featured in the weekly agenda. There were no public comments on the items to be reviewed, which is the appropriate opportunity for Inglewood residents to comment on agenda items or for them to ask council to answer any questions related to the staff reports. The council authorized to extend the Exclusive Negotiating Agreement with the Los Angeles Philharmonic an additional 60 days to negotiate the sale and renovation of the property located at 101-05 S. La Brea Avenue, formerly known as the AMAN Inc. Building. They also extended a two-year lease agreement with Duncan Solutions, Inc., to maintain occupancy of office space at 1 West Manchester Bl., in the annual amount of $86,088. The council awarded a contract and approved an agreement with Trueline Construction and Surfacing, Inc. to provide tennis court improvements at four

park sites. Several measures were adopted regarding the Inglewood Police Department including the acceptance of State Citizens Option for Public Safety grant funds; the review and approval to pay for the emergency door repair at City Yard; and, approved invoices submitted by Quest Diagnostics for providing drug testing examinations. The Public Works Department offered three staff reports that were approved by the council members. They approved a one-year agreement with Braden Consulting for professional management services and approved the Water Rights License and Agreement between the City of Inglewood and the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation for the lease of 95 acre-feet of the City’s groundwater rights at $125 per acre-foot for a total amount of $11,875. Item 11, pertaining to a Memorandum of Agreement for the Coordinated Integrated Monitoring Program and Enhanced Watershed Management Program was tabled

‘ROSEANNE’?

ABC and Disney’s swift decision to fire Roseanne Barr and cancel her ratingsleading-weekly series may be an indication that America may have turned the corner and will no longer tolerate the type of racist remarks that have permeated the national discussion for far too long without impunity. The president of ABC Entertainment said, “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values and we have decided to cancel her show. Outsiders will probably never know if the decision to cancel the show, which leaves not only Barr out of work, but also nearly 200 actors, writers and associated production staff out of work, was ‘a rare case of morals over money, or people over profits. Was it a matter of the networks anticipating a huge backlash from their broad audience, the thought of major advertisers and sponsors distancing themselves from Barr and her racist remarks, and withdrawing their advertising support, or was it a matter that the executives took the position that Barr’s tweets, which had previously presented a problem for ABC, had crossed the very thin line and this time, it was the worst yet and the vile, disgusting and distasteful remarks, couched as a bad ‘joke,’ was ‘unsurvivable.’ The morning after Barr tweeted her attacks on Valerie Jarrett, Chelsea Clinton and George Soros, twitter followers were on fire commenting mostly on Barr’s racist tweet about Jarrett.ABC executives were obviously trying to determine if there was a way that the program could remain on the air, by accepting her apology or if they should cancel the series. The answer was NO and the decision came swiftly. Before noon that morning, Barr had been informed that the show was cancelled and she tweeted the following message; “Don’t feel sorry for me, guys!! – I just want apologize to the hundreds of people and wonderful writers (all liberals) and talented actors who lost their jobs on my show due to my stupid tweet. I will be on Joe Rogan’s podcast Friday.” What struck me was the contrast between how the president has not endured any meaningful backlash from his tweets, interviews and antics that, in my view, have been equally as abhorrent as Barr’s remarks. It has been reported that he asked the FBI to jail journalists and publicly threatened to strip press credentials from news outlets that published negative stories about him. He has virtually halted objective press conferences that give news reporters the opportunity to question his

policy decisions, which many believe are intended to dismantle every critical element of the Obama administration. From his failure to disclose his tax returns; mocking a disabled journalist; referring to neo-Nazi protesters as very good people; deriding his own Attorney General, the Justice Department and the FBI; lying about his knowledge of his lawyer’s payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels for her silence; to name only a few, are actions that would have overwhelmed Obama, or any other president for that matter, and certainly led to impeachment proceedings. It is also alarming that for the duration of Obama’s presidency, while Trump was a ratings winner on ABC’s “The Apprentice,’ he continued with his conspiracy theory about Obama’s birthplace which, despite facts to the contrary, were met without consequence by ABC executives. Furthermore, Trump has never addressed the overwhelming facts that support Russian President Vladimir Putin’s interference in the presidential election and now his administration has advanced the notion that special investigator Robert Mueller is going to tamper with the midterm elections. It just might be possible that the decision to fire Roseanne Barr is a turning point in what many in our nation believe is unacceptable hate speech. Many republicans have indicated to me and others that Obama was a decent man who espoused and advanced policies that were not good for the United States. They have also said that even though Trump is ‘less than a decent human being,’ his policies have been good for the nation with healthy stock market numbers, low unemployment, an abandoned Iran Deal and proposed talks to eliminate North Korea’s nuclear threat, etc. Only time will tell whether or not the nation is growing weary of the president and the manner in which he conducts himself domestically and abroad. What is telling is the fact that a television situation comedy actress has had to face the wrath of decency, while the reprehensible actions of the world’s most powerful leader has not. I believe and certainly hope that the nation is turning the corner.

The office market is still soft, but demand for housing downtown has jumped in the last 15 years as thousands of new apartments and condominiums have helped transform much of downtown from a business park into a neighborhood where people live, shop for groceries and walk to outdoor cafes. But while Bunker Hill has top-flight cultural institutions such as Walt Disney Concert Hall and is a destination for about 40,000 office workers each weekday, it has few residents compared with other parts of downtown. Angels Landing and a $1-billion dollar development called the Grand are poised to dramatically change the Bunker Hill vibe. The Grand, designed by architect Frank Gehry, will be an open-air complex of apartments, condominiums, movie theaters, restaurants and shops that promise to enliven a city block across from Gehry’s Disney Concert Hall that has been mostly dead for half a century. Work on the project at Grand Avenue and First Street by developer Related Cos. is set to begin in the fall. A few blocks south is the Angels

Landing site, unoccupied save for occasional visits by flocks of goats brought in to chew weeds and brush off of the precipitous hillside. It was historically part of the business district but has been vacant for decades after the city cleared Bunker Hill for urban renewal. Filling in those two big gaps with blockbuster developments will transform Bunker Hill, office landlord Christopher Rising said. “There’s going to be some ‘there’ there,” said Rising, president of Rising Realty Partners. His firm owns one of the California Plaza office skyscrapers and competed for the Angels Landing site but lost to Peebles, MacFarlane Partners of San Francisco and New York-based Claridge Properties. “I’m a huge proponent of what they are doing,” Rising said of the trio’s proposal.

Between April 28 and May 14, 1,350 Black voters were surveyed, by telephone (41%) and online (59%), including 621 likely June Primary voters and 729 lower propensity voters. The margin of sampling error was +/- 2.67 percent at a 95% confidence level. In addition, results were weighted to match the age, partisanship, gender, and geographic location of registered Black voters. Not surprisingly, the character of Black voters in California is consistent with the

perspective of Blacks on a national level. Geographically, the African American population in the state is dispersed as follows: Los Angeles (52%), Other parts of Southern California (12%), San Francisco Bay Area 26%, Sacramento North (6%) and in the Central Valley (4%). Key findings related to the June Primary showed: • Although nearly one in five respondents or 19% remained undecided, Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom (35%) maintains a sizeable lead over Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (19%) and State Treasurer John Chiang (9%) among likely June Primary Voters.

• Nearly two-thirds of Black voters indicate a preference for U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein (65%) over State Senate President Pro Tempore Emeritus Kevin de León (12%), while nearly one in five remain undecided.

The Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA will continue their five game home stand this Sunday when they take on the defending champions, the Minnesota Lynx. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. The 3-1 Sparks started their home stand last Sunday when they played the Phoenix Mercury. They defeated the Mercury 80-72 behind the play of Chelsea Gray, Nneka Ogwumike and Odyssey Sims. Gray scored 23 points, Ogwumike had 18 and Sims scored 14. At the beginning of this season the Sparks are substituting more often which appears to working in their favor. “People on this team can play different positions and that’s a positive for us,” said Gray after the game on Sunday. “I am excited about this team but we still have work to do and we have room to get better.” The Phoenix game was the first game of the season for WNBA veteran and Sparks star Candace Parker. Parker missed the first three games with back problems. Against the Mercury she scored 10 points in 18 minutes. “I am feeling good but my rhythm and conditioning I still need to work on,” said Parker. Parker, who is an 11 year WNBA veteran, likes what she sees in the 2018 Sparks. “I think we are capable of doing great things. As I look around the locker room every person on this team is capable of doing great things and that’s special.” One of the best defensive players in the WNBA, Alana Beard of the Sparks is a 13 year WNBA veteran. She is assigned to guard the opponents’ best player ever game and she seems to be up for the challenge every game. “It takes a lot of mental energy as well as physical energy but it’s impossible to guard great players with one person so we have a defensive scheme that helps me out,” said Beard. Beard is always in great shape even after 13 years in the league. “I love playing this game and I know I have 10 or 11 people that depend on me so that’s my motivation to stay ready.”

The Inglewood unified School District recently hosted a gathering of graduating seniors who have been accepted at four-year colleges and universities. This image depicts a mostly empty auditorium of students, parents and faculty and staff. While every graduating senior may not be college material, or even interested in college for that matter, it is the opinion of this writer, a former IUSD teacher, that it should be a goal of every high school student to prepare themselves for the types of jobs that will be available in the future. While a college degree does not guarantee the future success of anyone, the skills, attitudes and abilities that one earns with a college degree positions them for success, whatever their future goals may be.

The right design could open up the top of Bunker Hill, he said, which is difficult to reach on foot from the Metro Station at the corner of the development site at Fourth and Hill streets — unless you pay $1 to ride the Angels Flight cabledriven railway. “It’s very hostile to pedestrians right now,” Rising said. That challenging topography can be turned into an asset for Angels Landing, architect Glenn Rescalvo of Handel Architects said. His plan calls for terraces, passageways, ramps, stairs, escalators and elevators to make it easy for people to move around or hang out. “We want to make the site as permeable as possible,” he said. “You could enter from different points and reach all the other locations.” Buildings would fill only half the site, leaving room outdoors for landscaped public terraces including one overlooking Angels Flight railway midway up its path. Above underground parking and lower-level shops and restaurants would be two towers.

The shorter tower of about 27 stories would house a charter elementary school and a 289-room Mondrian hotel with a rooftop pool and bar. The main tower would reach a minimum of 80 stories and include a more luxurious 192-room SLS hotel with its own swimming pool. Above that would be 425 upscale apartments along with some subsidized affordable units. The top floors would hold 250 condominiums — and another swimming pool. Technically the tallest building in L.A. would still be the 73-story Wilshire Grand Center, which reaches a height of 1,100 feet with the help of a spire on top. As planned, Angels Landing would be 1,020 feet tall, but its top floor penthouses, Recalvo said, would be higher than the highest occupied floor of the Wilshire Grand, Recalvo said. The plans are still tentative, however, and the temptation to seize bragging rights tantalizes the developers. “The tallest? We are striving for it. We definitely want to be able to say that,” said co-developer Victor MacFarlane, chairman of MacFarlane Partners.

As currently proposed, however, Angels Landing has maxed out the available density allowed for the site and the developers seem content with boasting that they will have the highest roof line in the West, a distinction now applied to U.S. Bank Tower, technically the secondtallest building in the city. MacFarlane is already building a $400-million residential development a block away on Fifth Street, an apartment and retail complex that includes 660 apartments and a 24-story tower that will overlook Pershing Square. He predicts that residents who move there or to Angels Landing will be young professionals and empty nesters who want to live in an urban setting but don’t seek the more lively entertainment-oriented district growing around Staples Center and L.A. Live, where two other $1-billion mixed-use projects are being completed. Financing to build Angels Landing should be available through conventional sources, said MacFarlane, who develops property on behalf of pension funds and other large institutions. But the real

estate market has been on the upswing for several years so it may be a while before big-money backers jump in, he said. “It’s not going to be financed in this cycle,” MacFarlane said, “unless this cycle breaks all kinds of length records. We are three to four years from breaking ground.” Major projects such as the Grand and Metropolis, which is nearing completion north of L.A. Live, often take many years to execute, however. “Angels Landing is like any other mega project,” downtown real estate consultant Hal Bastian said. “It will take more time to [get to] construction than anybody would expect — and it will get done.” To start Angels Landing it will cost as much as $40 million just to buy the land and go through the design, approval and permit process, MacFarlane said. Construction would take an additional 41 months, perhaps putting completion around late 2024. “Realistically,” he said speaking of the timing, “these big projects take what they take.”
