The Normandy landings were the landing operations on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as DDay, it was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The operation began the liberation of German-occupied France (and later Europe) from Nazi control, and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front. Planning for the operation began in 1943. In the months leading up to the invasion, the Allies conducted a substantial military deception, codenamed Operation Bodyguard, to mislead the Germans as to the date and location of the main Allied landings. The weather on D-Day was far from ideal and the operation had to be delayed 24 hours; a further postponement would have meant a delay of at least two weeks as the invasion planners had requirements for the phase of the moon, the tides, and the time of day that meant only a few days each month were deemed suitable. Southern California’s home prices boomeranged back in April from a rare price drop in March as lower mortgage rates and an increase in the number of homes for sale lured more home shoppers back into the market, real estate data tracker CoreLogic reported Wednesday, May 29. The median home value in Inglewood is $557,500. Inglewood home values have gone up 4.7% over the past year and Zillow predicts they will rise 0.6% within the next year. The median list price per square foot in Inglewood is $405, which is lower than the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim Metro average of $434. Home values showed a slight uptick last month, and while sales were down, they decreased by the smallest margin in nine months. Despite a cooling trend compared with the redhot market of the past few years, this year’s spring homebuying season has been gaining steam following two months of 30year mortgage rates hovering just above 4%. “April’s smaller annual sales decrease, coupled with an above-average month-to-month increase in 3 sales, suggests declining mortgage rates and

SoFi, the largest provider of student-loan refinancing, is reportedly close to acquiring naming rights to the $5 billion sports venue under development in Inglewood, California. The deal is said to cost SoFi $400 million over 20 years, and the new stadium will serve as home to two NFL franchises— the Los Angeles Chargers and the Los Angeles Rams—when it opens in 2020. For SoFi, the deal is about advertising. Anthony Noto, SoFi’s CEO, is a former linebacker at West Point, previously served as CFO for the NFL and had financially successful careers with Goldman Sachs and Twitter. The argument for SoFi’s naming rights seems reasonable—the LA stadium will host the Super Bowl in 2022 and the Olympics in 2028, garnering an enormous amount of exposure for SoFi.

The amphibious landings were preceded by extensive aerial and naval bombardment and an airborne assault—the landing of 24,000 US, British, and Canadian airborne troops shortly after midnight. Allied infantry and armoured divisions began landing on the coast of France at 06:30. The target 50-mile (80 km) stretch of the Normandy coast was divided into five sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. Strong winds blew the landing craft east of their intended positions, particularly at Utah and Omaha. The men landed under heavy fire from gun emplacements overlooking the beaches, and the shore was mined and covered with obstacles such as wooden stakes, metal tripods, and barbed wire, making the work of the beach-clearing teams difficult and dangerous. Casualties were heaviest at Omaha, with its high cliffs. At Gold, Juno, and Sword, several fortified towns were cleared in house-to-house fighting, and two major gun emplacements at Gold were disabled, using specialised tanks. The Allies failed to achieve any of their goals on the first day. Carentan, St. Lô, and Bayeux remained in German hands, and Caen, a major objective, was not captured until 21 July. Only two of the beaches (Juno and Gold) were linked on the first day, and all five beachheads were not connected until 12 June; however, the operation

In response, he tweeted, “The Central Park Five documentary was a one sided piece of garbage that didn’t explain the horrific crimes of these young men while in park.” Apparently Linda Fairstein, the lead prosecutor in the Central Park Five case isn’t feeling what the series had to offer about her either. She calls is, “A basket of Lies!” Once the series dropped this weekend, a social media campaign started trending called, #CancelLindaFairstein. And although Fairstein is now a popular novelist, the backlash from social media has forced her to deactivate all her accounts. She has always stood by the initial verdicts, but that didn’t stop her from stepping down from multiple boards after the series dropped last week. Fairstein resigned from the boards of the nonprofit Safe Horizon, Vassar College, God’s Love We Deliver and the Joyful Heart Foundation, The Hollywood Reporter noted. It’s no surprise that Ava does a phenomenal job with When They See Us, as she continues to prove through her raw talent that she is a Power House in Hollywood.

PARK SHOOTING INJURES THREE MEN By City News Service

Three men between the ages of 18 and 25 were wounded in a shooting at the Westchester Recreation Center, authorities said Monday. It happened about 6 p.m. Sunday at the park at 7000 W. Manchester Ave., said Officer D. Orris of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Operations Center. The three victims were shot in the back, possibly running away from their assailant or assailants, Orris said. The shooting was believed gang-related. The victims took themselves to Memorial Hospital of Gardena for treatment, he said. No suspect information was available, and the victims were not cooperating with police, Orris said.

TRUMP BANS AMERICANS FROM VISITING CUBA The Trump administration recently imposed major new travel restrictions on visits to Cuba by U.S. citizens, banning stops by cruise ships and ending a heavily used form of educational travel as it seeks to further isolate the communist government. The Treasury Department announced that the U.S. will no longer allow cruises to Cuba or the group educational and cultural trips known as “people-to-people” travel to the island. The sanctions took effect on Wednesday. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin said the measures are a response to what it calls Cuba’s “destabilizing role” in the Western Hemisphere, including support for the government of President Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela. “This administration has made a strategic decision to reverse the loosening of sanctions and other restrictions on the Cuban regime,” Mnuchin said. “These ac-

tions will help to keep U.S. dollars out of the hands of Cuban military, intelligence, and security services.” Cruise ships have brought thousands of Americans to Cuba since the U.S. began restoring full diplomatic relations with the communist government in December 2014 and have provided an important economic lifeline to the island. Along with the cruise ships, the U.S. will also now ban most private planes and boats from stopping in the island. Consequently, private and corporate aircraft, cruise ships, sailboats, fishing boats, and other similar aircraft and vessels generally will be prohibited from going to Cuba. I wonder if this action is yet another Trump effort to erase what President Obama implemented, without any consideration for the economic boon the Cubans have realized as a result of relaxed relations with Cuba that pertain to trade, travel and tourism.

Butts has previously questioned the validity of the group, noting that not a single Inglewood resident who claims to be a member of the group has appeared at any public hearings in the two years that the group has been in existence. The Mayor expressed frustration and concern that the DA’s office didn’t bother to contact city officials before making its conclusion. “Had they contacted us, we would have provided the context and infor-

mation necessary to see that the allegation was wrong-headed and that the City bent over backwards to cure any perceived procedural defect by holding not one, but two subsequent Council meetings to discuss the project,” Butts said. “It appears the DA’s office didn’t even do a basic search of the city’s website and press clippings, which makes all of this clear,” he said. “It is deeply troubling to see the District Attorney’s office allow itself to be used as a political tool by a company that opposes the construction of the Clippers Arena.”

a team commented on a player under contract with another team outside of a pre/post-game interview, that’s a fine every time. That this was the coach of a team strongly linked to Leonard as a free agent this summer made sure it was on everybody’s radar. It’s also a small price to pay if Leonard decides to join the Clippers. Obviously, this one comment is not going to sway Leonard’s decision, but it’s been part of a seasonlong effort to show Leonard how much he is wanted by them. Leonard certainly has noticed. Leonard has not tipped his hand about which way he is leaning this summer, as expected his focus has been only the court, where he has led the Raptors within three games of an NBA championship. As basketball fans watch this year’s NBA finals, Toronto fans will hope that Leonard decides to remain in Toronto while Los Angeles Clippers fans will pray that he comes home.

The arena story has been kind of under the radar over the past few months, but will presumably get more attention as the Clippers themselves rise in perception this summer (if things go as planned). Mayor Butts opened this week’s council meeting by reciting a special commendation that was given to the Friends of Inglewood Public Library in recognition of increasing literacy in the City of Inglewood, especially during the summer of 2019. The commendation acknowledged the community organizations that are dedicated to the Inglewood Reads program and applauds their work as they carry out events, programs and awareness-building activities that encourage all residents of Inglewood to read and help others to read. The council approved an amendment to the bylaws of the South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB) and approved the option to extend for one additional year with P&R Paper Supply Company for the purchase of various janitorial supplies for all City facilities, The council authorized the payment of an invoice submitted by Versaterm for software licensing and annual support and approved a three-year agreement with Braden Consulting to provide professional project and program management. The council also approved Amendment No. 3 to Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Agreement No. MR312.12 with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transporta-

tion Authority (Metro) to extend ITS IV-A funding lapse date to June 30, 2019, for FY 2012-13 programmed funds, and extend ITS IV-A funding lapse date to June 30, 2023, for FY 2018-19 programmed funds. They also approved Water Rights License and Agreements between the City of Inglewood and the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation for the lease of 48 acre-feet of the City’s groundwater rights at $125 per acre-foot, for a total amount of $6,000. It was such a pleasure to have The Los Angeles Rams host a co-ed Football Clinic/Character Education Session for the Youth of The City of Inglewood over the weekend. The city showed up and showed out on the field of the historic Edward Vincent Park, where the entry lines snaked around the corner. There were boxes full of free gear, cleats, and hats donated by previous Rams players that attendees had the option to receive covering half the field. This camp was unlike other football camps because in addition to the kids working on speed and endurance, the campers also got an earful on what it takes to be successful on and off the field from Certified USA Football Coaches and other Rams Community Members. They learned of their privilege and

responsibility of being a child athlete. As their individual coaches talked about the importance of discipline, dedications, and determination, they all received some tough life lessons from former Ram Legend Vince Ferragamo. It was great to see such positivity as the city came together for the kids while promoting safety, healthy, and educational life skills and allowing them the opportunity sports.

It’s been over two months since the slain rapper, entrepreneur, and community activist Nipsey Hussle has been laid to rest; the ongoing legal affairs with his estate are just getting started. Tanisha Foster (the mother of Nipsey’s daughter, Emani Asghedom) is attempting

to battle it out in court for full custody (along with support from the estate) of their child. At the time of Nipsey’s death, Emani was living with her father. Nipsey’s sister, Samantha suggests that Tanisha is unfit to raise Emani and that having the child live with her mother would not only put her in danger, but would also not be conducive to a lifestyle that her brother has made her niece accustomed to. In the wake of the news that Tanisha was hit with a bench warrant on May 15, 2019, as a result of not showing up to court for a DUI she plead “No Contest” to some years ago, the judge has awarded temporary custody of the child to Samantha. Tanisha has been ordered to attend AA meetings, and another court date is set for July. As if that isn’t enough posthumous drama, the LA Crips now want in on the cake. It’s no secret that Nipsey “Naybahood Nip” Hussle was a respected member of the Rollin 60’s

They are attempting to trademark the Motto, “The Marathon Continues.” The Marathon Continues was not only the Name of Nipsey’s second Mix tape (a follow up effort to his first mix tape, The Marathon), and the name of his clothing store, but ultimately a synonymous catchphrase with Nipsey Hussle and form of salute from his fans in his honor following his untimely death in March. The Organization is taking the legal steps necessary to adopt it as the Mantra to use for commerce and community efforts. Unfortunately, upon his passing, we learned that Nipsey did not have a will, and sadly, he also failed to trademark the “TMC” Slogan before he passed. The Crips LLC reportedly filed for the trademark on May 16 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. According to the documents, the organization plans to use the trademark for commerce including “conducting youth sports programs; Concert booking; Developing educational manuals for others in the field of community organizing, gang prevention, gang intervention; Direction of making radio or television programs; Entertainment in the nature of boxing contests; Entertainment services in the nature of an ongoing realitybased television program; Entertainment services in the nature of development, creation, production,

distribution, and post-production of documentaries and films.” The Crips indicated in their trademark filing that they have plans on releasing a documentary titled, The Marathon Continues” on all streaming platforms this summer. The gang registered its LLC in 2018. Nipsey’s brother, Samiel “Blacc Sam” Asghedom filed a trademark application on May 28th to secure rights to
