Inglewood to allow fireworks display
By Francis Taylor, Senior Correspondent
Fireworks in the City of Inglewood may be displayed on the 4th of July only between 5PM and 10PM. The mayor and city council members encourage everyone to be safe with the use of SAFE and SANE fireworks only and to confine all celebrations to
private property. Safety is critically important! Fireworks injuries seen at Emergency Rooms between June 20 and July 20, 2014 included 28% from Sparklers, 16% from Illegal Firecrackers and 13% reloadable shells. Injuries by age included 34% - age 25-44 years
and 15% -age five to nine years.46% of fireworks injuries affect the hands and fingers while 17% affect the eyes with another 17% affecting the head, face and ears. The balance of injuries affects the arms, trunks and legs. The most important safety tips include; having an adult present, do
not light fireworks in the street, be sure to have water handy, never re-light malfunctioning fireworks, never give fireworks to small children and never throw fireworks at another person. Happy 4th of July from INGLEWOOD TODAY!
Family, Academics & Culture at Century Academy for Excellence By Kenneth Miller, Publisher
Century Academy For Excellence charter school has proved to be more than just an educational institution as indicated here with football coach Kenneth Patterson, former basketball standout Robert Cook (Washington Prep), former two-sport star Daniel Shelton (Inglewood High) and dean and basketball coach David Groce. Photo/ Kenneth Miller
Virtual graduations where students dressed in their cap and gown accepted their diploma, celebrated as parents painted their names and class year on car windshields was over. At Century Academy For Excellence (CAFE) school administrators were bracing for the bad news that Lennox school board voted to revoke its charter, thus moving forward to closing the school down for good. However, just days removed from the gut wrenching decision by Lennox, operator Dr. Lisa Edwards and principal Dr. Stephany Glover were fully engaged at the school located in Inglewood as if nothing had happened at all. A sign outside the main office noted that applications were being accepted, and on this day there would be one happy applicant to enroll in the school. David Groce, the dean and boys basketball coach, has been at the school for the past five years, before Edwards took over the school.
Buppie is Back! See Page 6
Groce set up shop on the outdoor basketball courts at the former church transformed into a school and greeted the new applicant, while also entertaining a trio of former students who were two years removed from CAFE graduation. It was not unusual for students to return to the school especially since Edwards and her sister Glover inspired this higher learning family culture. Groce is more than just a holdover from the previous administration, Edwards promoted and elevated him to one of the most significant pillars at the school. “Before, I would say that the school really didn’t have any culture,” Groce told Inglewood Today. “Education wise it was good, but the kids really wasn’t having any fun and identify with the community.” He said that once Dr. Glover and Dr. Edwards arrived, they changed the whole culture. Rep. Waters Tributes Black Lives Matter, Angela Davis, Colin Kaepernick, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson & Civil Rights Activists on House Floor It News Wire
WASHINGTON – Ahead of the historic House vote on H.R. 7120, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA43) paid tribute to activists and leaders in the decades-long fight against police brutality on the House Floor. She also expressed her support for the ongoing protests for justice on behalf of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Rayshard Brooks, and countless other Black men and women who have been killed at the hands of police. I rise to support H.R. 7120, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which bans chokeholds, creates a national police misconduct registry, and makes it easier to prosecute police for their brutality, among many other much needed provisions. Thank you to the leadership of the Congressional Black Caucus for bringing us to this moment. The murder of George Floyd, and the pleasure the murdering officer seemed to take in his power over a struggling Black man, are nothing new. My heart broke when I first saw the video footage of the murder, not just for George Floyd and his loved ones, but also because this brutality, and all the police violence against Black men and women before it, have been used for centuries to terrorize, subjugate, and silence the Black community. I have been fighting against this since my first days as an activist and member of the California State Assembly, when I took on then-Los Angeles Police
Chief Daryl Gates, who popularized the chokehold maneuver, which killed over a dozen Black men in Los Angeles between 1975 and 1982. But now I would like to pay tribute to the brave men and women who for so many years have confronted bad cops, racist cops, brutal police chiefs, and the police protective leagues and unions who shield them from accountability. I want to pay special tribute to Angela Davis, Elaine Brown, and the Black Panthers who fought hard and sacrificed mightily fighting bad cops. And then there is Rev. Al Sharpton, who took up the fight against bad cops and assisted [victims’] families in getting legal representation when these issues were not popular. I want to thank Rev. [Jesse] Jackson, who worked with me to confront the racist LA police chief Daryl Gates who popularized the chokehold and battering ram. I want to thank Colin Kaepernick who took the knee and challenged the killings and beatings of unarmed Blacks. And lastly, I want to thank Black Lives Matter: uncompromising, disruptive, energetic, and dedicated to undoing police killings and abuse. I want to challenge the mayors and members of city councils and county commissioners who control police budgets to get the courage to reimagine what it means to serve and protect, and undo the system of rogue cops that has gone on for far too long. And in closing, I want to say to the protesters, I stand with you. No justice, no peace! Continued from page 1: Sports...

“Kids start having fun and they brought in a new technology with kids learning with the computer,” Groce added. The football coach Kenneth Patterson echoed Groce. “With this school, pretty much the students and the staff is like a family,” he added. A former student such as Daniel Shelton is now attending Inglewood, but was one of those who return. “At this school a big part of being able to play sports is academics, so that carries over to high school, college and all that. You can play sports all you life, but what if you get injured and you don’t have anything to fall back on? So education is a big thing of life. Your body is eventually going to break down but your mind is not that’s why you see a lot of players like Richard Sherman who went to Stanford,” Shelton eloquently explained. For them, especially since COVID-19, it was refreshing to get out of the house and into an open space such as the playground and Century Academy has always been that safe haven for them. Groce feels that Century Academy doesn’t not get the support that it deserves from the district. “They are just on the outside looking in. They don’t really come up here to see what we do at Century Academy. They don’t see that the students are coming back on a weekday while we are having COVID or things like that. It’s a family group, its more than for the school, its for the community.”

Sports & Entertainment NBA bubble may burst before it ever resumes in Orlando
By Kenneth Miller, Publisher
Personally, I never though I would see another NBA game this season after coronavirus upended our lives some three months ago, and now I am even more skeptical that LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard would continue
their rivalry of Southern California supremacy. Yes, the NBA has agreed to resume its season within the next month or so at Walt Disney World in Orlando, but with COVID-19 continuing to spread in Florida and California and other regions
Greenleaf: OWN Network Hit is the Number One Cable Telecast for Women 25-54
of the nation, not only does it appear risky but also quite irresponsible. The NBA sent out its media application form that will only be approved for a rare number of publications or organizations and it would cost entities some $550 per day
The fifth and final season premiere of OWN’s hit megachurch drama “Greenleaf” (6/23/20) delivered 1.9 million viewers and ranked as Tuesday night’s #1 cable telecast in OWN’s key demographic of women 25-54, which is up +2% from last season’s premiere. The acclaimed drama from Lionsgate, award-winning writer/executive producer Craig Wright (“Lost,” “Six Feet Under”), and executive producers Clement Virgo (“Empire”), Kriss
Turner Towner (“Black Monday”), and Oprah Winfrey was also the night’s #1 telecast across all broadcast and cable for African-American women. Greenleaf stars Merle Dandridge as Grace Greenleaf; Keith David as Bishop James Greenleaf; Lynn Whitfield as Lady Mae Greenleaf; Kim Hawthorne as Kerissa Greenleaf; Lamman Rucker as Jacob Greenleaf; and Deborah Joy Winans as Charity Greenleaf-Satterjee. The Lion Queen GIRLS RUN THE WORLD
By Michelle Lyons, Columnist
Imagine waitressing at a Mexican Restaurant in New York City and your co-worker, who is also a waitress, tells you she wants to run for Congress. Do you encourage her or think to yourself, “She is crazy”. Unfortunately, most people think the later. They limit others to their own limitations and anything outside of their own expectations for themselves seems asinine. Thankfully, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez also known as AOC, followed her calling and God qualified her call in less than a year. Then on June 23rd, just last Tuesday, she won her second term proving to haters that the first time was not a fluke. Regardless how you feel about her politics, you must see God’s Grace in her career. Which is why, when God calls you must answer because on the other side of that call is where miracles happen much larger than what most people see. Many are called but few are chosen… and this year those chosen are FEMALE. Just yesterday, Amy McGrath beat out Charles Booker in the Kentucky primary to take on Mitch McConnell this November in The General Election. Trayvon Martin’s mom, Sybrina Fulton is answering the call to go into Public Service in Miami, and she will also be on the ballot this November. Black Lives Matter Co-Founder, Chivona Newsome just ran for office in New York, the same day AOC won. Women all across this Nation are answering the call to put love back into society: prioritize children and women issues, reform prisons and children services, and put more money in Education. Can you image what The World will look like under Women leadership? You need to start thinking about it because The Future Is Female, meaning The Future has many more women in leadership alongside men to create a more peaceful society. Women like AOC, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Aja Brown, Amy Klobuchar, Tulsi Gabbard, Stacey Abrams, Gretchen Whitmer are stepping into their power because no matter how it’s been perceived GIRLS RUN THE WORLD!
BUPPIE | BUSINESS Letter Responds to IUSD Board Prez
(Editor’s note: Last week Inglewood Today published a front page article that within it challenged Inglewood Unified School District Board president Dr. D’Artagnan Juc’qualle Scorza, who after publication unilaterally criticized the newspaper, the city, the mayor all the while not accepting any responsibility for his own actions leading a board that has been responsible for allowing iconic schools to close and our students leave the district in record numbers for higher performing charter schools and outside the area private and public schools. The author of this letter Joe Bowers has been a steadfast advocate of education of our children for decades and has closely monitored and advocated for change within the district. Scorza sent Mr. Bowers a letter and here is his response. Opinions of Mr. Bowers are expressly those of his own and does not reflect Inglewood Today position on Mr. Scorza or the IUSD.) Joe Bowers
Why are you harassing me by sending this email that appears to be a response to an email sent out by Bishop Young. Cease and desist and don’t do it again. I have a few minutes so I’ll give you my reaction to your email since you sought me out. I hope you don’t mind that I blind copy some people on this response like you did with your email. Because I know you very well having worked on Measure GG and the Dotson Campaign with you, I don’t believe you know the meaning of truth nor have much practice telling it. So when you call out people for creating false narratives, maybe you should listen to yourself and read your own writing. You know from experience that I’m not easily fooled. You say that closing Warren Lane is just a rumor. Then please have a talk with Dr. Torres. She didn’t get the message and is giving Warren Lane parents that impression. You gave a presentation to the parents and used a slide that said “Rationale for Warren Lane Consolidating to other IUSD schools.” Most people would think the school was being closed. You mentioned Donald J Trump’s tweeting. Did you know you both share the same first two initials, D’Artagnan Juc’qualle? There must be something about having those initials, D.J., that makes you want to talk about yourself all the time and want everything to be about you. You probably could have made your point in your email without inserting up your life story. But then I’m not sure what your point was anyway. By the way, how dare you take Michelle Obama’s name in vain? You talked a lot about using facts and data. I also rely on facts and data. The following are some facts and data I think you should consider as you talk about yourself. You say turning around Inglewood Unified is difficult work and that you are dedicated to its success. Well how did IUSD get to where it is today? You happened to have been the IUSD assistant Chief of Staff from 11/15/2012 to 03/30/2020 working for the State Administrator Office. That’s when the
State Administrator and Interim State Administrator borrowed $29 Million without financial justification. Those are facts. You don’t talk about that job experience in public do you? Conveniently, you left it out of your school board bio. Perhaps had you said something because you care so much, those fiscal mistakes could have been corrected before the school district had to assume responsibility for repaying the money and having to divert $1.8 Million a year for the next 20 years. Borrowing that money is a part of why IUSD is struggling financially today and why you have to work so hard and make tough decisions. You bring up your military service. Thank you for volunteering to serve. I come from a military family so I’m aware of the sacrifices those in the military make. I also know that most military jobs don’t put you in harm’s way but if you don’t elaborate on what you did in the service those who don’t know you might think you were a warrior.. I guess the Navy didn’t have that impression of you. In fact, these are words you used to describe your Navy service on some application. Navy - November 2001-2006 Personnel and Budget Management ·Responsible for the pay and personnel administration of 250 Navy personnel assigned to Multi-National Force Iraq joint and coalition forces ·Processed hundreds of pay documents and travel claims ·Managed a semiannual $100,000 budget for independent operations and unit equipment Records Management ·Directly responsible for records upkeep, led and managed the transition of more than 3,600 personnel documents from paper to electronic format ·Processed more than 5,000 document entries in two months Communication ·Communicated and coordinated Continental U.S. and International Operations for the travel of Navy personnel in out of area of responsibility and hostile zones · Worked closely with executive management to create programs
that expanded US Navy land based operations and capabilities in Iraq Leadership ·Supervised and directed individual deployment of Navy personnel while deployed in Baghdad, Iraq from February 2005 to August 2005 ·Meritoriously promoted to junior management ·Created, coordinated and executed cultural history events ·Established a volunteer and tutor program through the Partnership in Education Program I guess you weren’t awarded a purple heart because you would have let everyone know but if you do have one that must have been some paper cut. In your narrative you say that IUSD will receive funding under AB1840 “if we comply with the following: - Close and/or consolidate schools -Growth and maintenance of budgetary reserves - Sell or lease surplus property” That is true, but the law does not require IUSD to take those specific actions. They are among a list of actions that IUSD “may” not “shall” explore and undertake to receive the funding. So if you are implying that closing Warren Lane is an action that AB 1840 requires the school district to take to receive funding, then you are being misleading. COVID-19 has affected the school budget, but it’s not an excuse for not engaging the community in the decision to close Warren Lane. And your reference to the May Revise cuts is moot, because Governor Newsom and the Legislature have agreed to restore many of the cuts proposed in the May Revise. I could respond to what you’ve said about Mayor Butts and Inglewood Today, but they can handle that. I’ll finish by saying the Inglewood community is sure lucky you came back to help fix the school district and greatly appreciates it that you support Black Lives Matter. I suggest you add working hard on that truthiness thing if you want people in Inglewood to take you seriously. Out. Joe Bowers

the cost of parking and the hospitality requires just shy $100 per game. Now, with COVID-19 crippling our business and advertisers abandoning our product in droves, covering a NBA game could mean bankruptcy. However, for the NBA television and marketing partners a hyphenated campaign could cut their losses that are increasing by the billions. Thus ESPN, which has trimmed staff and cut salaries, is salivating to televise something more than the opinionated First Take and highlight reels of games from yesteryear. Commissioner Adam Silver even hinted at such prospects that the plans to resume play could come to a screeching halt during appearance on TIME 100 Talks. “Never full steam ahead no matter what,” Silver responded to TIME. “One thing we are learning about this virus is much [is] unpredictable, and we and our players together with their union look at the data on a daily basis. If there were something to change that was outside of the scope of what we are playing for, certainly we would revisit our plans. “We are testing daily. We haven’t put
a precise number on it, but if we were to see a large number of cases and see spread in our community, that would of course be a cause to stop as well.” Florida which recklessly opened way too soon has reported more than 6,000 additional cases of the coronavirus since this week, raising the state’s total past 152,000 cases. On one single day, the state had its highest single-day total reported at 9,585 cases. The New Orleans Pelicans has had three players test positive for the virus, the Brooklyn Nets former Taft High Star Spencer Dinwiddie told The Athletic that he had also tested positive for the virus — though Dinwiddie said it was “unclear” whether he would be able to go to Disney World. Wilson Chandler, a reserve forward, told the team he was opting to skip the rest of the season because of virus concerns. Veteran Milwaukee Bucks guard George Hill is still on the fence as to return citing social justice issues in addition to the virus as a primary concern and recently opened up a charter school in his home town of Indianapolis. “If I didn’t have that talent, I possibly would’ve been that George Floyd. I possibly would’ve got gunned down in the streets in Indianapolis. So, yes, this (charter school) for me, it impacts me even more because I’ve seen the killing going on, and I’ve seen the police brutality,” Hill said before getting choked up. “I’ve seen that my cousin is laying in the street for an hour and a half before another police officer gets there. I’ve seen that. So, I get emotional because it really hurts. I’ve got interracial kids, and I’m scared just for my whole life.” Yeah, so life is much more important than basketball at the moment although sports in and of themselves contributes in many aspects to the life we live.

Nashville’s Black Community. I consider it an honor to be able to work alongside Musical Director Dr. Kwami on this monumental project, especially as he carries forth the torch of the Fisk Jubilee Singers so well. I’m also excited to work with the Curb Records team in the creation of this project, and for making it available for the world to hear.” Also making a guest appearance on the album is Country singer Rodney Atkins, whom the Fisk Jubilee Singers had previously joined on Atkins’ 2019 single, “Caught Up In The Country.” Their collaboration broke the record for the most weeks on Billboard’s Country Airplay Chart at 57 weeks until it was broken by Jimmie Allen’s “Make Me Want To”, Travis Denning’s “After A Few” and most recently Scotty McCreery’s “In Between.”
