Oh politics. A touchy subject no matter who you are. You really can’t win, just because there are so many issues our country faces these days.

Perhaps you just have to choose your battles and know when you won’t be heard by the other side.

Anyways, back in 2007 and 2008 politics were a less tricky time. Gas was under $2.00 and we were all still amazed by the first Transformers movie. It was even a time when Shia Labeouf hadn’t gone crazy. Well it was also when Jason Wells was a US Se-

Days before the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams face off in Week 3 of the regular season, Los Angeles Stadium, the future home of both NFL teams, scheduled to be completed in 2020, as well as Super Bowl LVI in 2022, the 2023 College Football National Championship and the Opening and Closing ceremonies of the 2028 Olympics, hosted a media tour of the construction site.

INGLEWOOD TODAY as well as a bevy of other local media outlets were escorted on site and into the stadium bowl for interviews and to photograph the construction progress to date, which includes excavation of the site, the structural steel for the bowl, precast columns for support of the canopy and the erection of the first pieces of canopy steel Keith Butler, Shift Supervisor and Inglewood resident, greeted the bus full of media representatives and provided detailed information about the site and the construction process as the bus entered the bowl.

“We have about 3,000 men and women working 24 hours each day,” Butler explained. “We are proud that we have met the 30 percent minority participation and over 30 percent local hires to build this world class stadium.”

The Los Angeles Stadium and Enter-

tainment District at Hollywood Park (LASED) is the centerpiece of the 298acre site and is transforming the site of the former Hollywood Park Racetrack to a year-round sports and entertainment destination for the enjoyment of people throughout Southern California as well as visitors to the region.

The new NFL home for the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams is more than 50 percent complete and is on schedule to open summer of 2020, as a result of the six million worker hours expended to complete one half of the construction.

Once complete the LA Stadium will measure more than three million square feet following the excavation of more than six million cubic yards of dirt out of the bowl and nearly 10 million cubic yards site wide.

If you indulged this summer or are just looking for a fresh start this month you have almost missed putting away the booze and joining sober September.

The 30-day challenge could have been a month-long hiatus from drinking, where the rosé and Coronas of summer are replaced with sparkling water and other non-alcoholic beverages.

Sober September joins its counterpart, dry January, in offering a chance to get back on track with health at a time of

new beginnings. In January, it is the start of the New Year, while September marks the start of the school year and a return to routines and schedules after the lazy days of summer.

If an individual does not find it easy to abstain for one month, it can be an indication that there may be a dependence or overuse or abuse problem.”

The current U.S. dietary guidelines define moderate drinking as up to 1 drink per day for women and up to 2 drinks per

day for men.

Nearly 30 percent of people ages 18 or older reported that they engaged in binge drinking in the past month, according to the most recent data from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

What can taking a month off of alcohol do for your body? There has been limited research on how quitting alcohol for a month affects your body, but a few studies have shown psychological and health benefits.

Gov. Jerry Brown recently signed a bill to decriminalize selling food and other goods on sidewalks and in parks in California.

The legislation, introduced in January by state Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens, prohibits criminal penalties for sidewalk vending. Vendors will also be able to clear pending citations and be retroactively relieved of previous convictions.

Under the law, which goes into effect Jan. 1, cities will be able to establish a permit program for sidewalk vending, according to a news release from Lara’s office. Vendors may also be required to abide by the same laws as other business, such as having a business license to operate and following state tax laws.

Local authorities could also still in-

stitute regulations on sidewalk vendors, but with stipulations that involve health, safety and welfare concerns.

“With Senate Bill 946 we can start seeing sidewalk vendors for who they are – women and seniors, single parents, and micro-business owners taking that first step to starting their own business,” Lara said in the release.

The state senator noted that he introduced the bill after hearing stories about being harassed and even arrested.

He cited one case in which a mother was arrested last October while selling corn in Rancho Cucamonga. She was subsequently detained by ICE and held for six months before a judge ordered her release.

Immigration advocates applauded the governor for signing the legislation.

Roughly 80 percent of some 50,000 vendors in L.A. were estimated to be women, according to a news release from Leadership for Urban Renewal Network, one of over 60 groups that supported the legislation.

“Sidewalk vending is an important and celebrated part of California’s culture and economy,” the organization’s statement said. “Vendors were unfairly denied access to the formal economy and have suffered the harms of local criminalization.”

To kick off its 100th season, the LA Philharmonic joins forces with CicLAvia for a car-free, music-filled fest that stretches from Downtown’s Walt Disney Concert Hall to the orchestra’s summer home at the Hollywood Bowl. Bike, skate or walk between Downtown L.A. and Hollywood as more than 1,800 musicians, artists and dancers will perform at six pedestrian hubs across the eight-mile route. The afternoon culminates in a show at the Hollywood Bowl, where Gustavo Dudamel will lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic with performances from Herbie Hancock, Kali Uchis, Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) and more.

This will be a great opportunity for Inglewood parents and guardians who have youngsters who may be interested in the YOLA center that will be established in Inglewood adjacent to city hall. Mayor Butts has indicated that Inglewood students will be given priority in selecting those who will benefit from the musical instruction that will be provided by the LA Phil.

Members of the Inglewood Police Department and Los Angeles Chargers 2018 Rookie Class, including first-round draft picks Derwin James and second-round draft pick LB Uchenna Nwosu, converged on Worthington Elementary School in Inglewood to host Play60 Camp to talk about the importance of physical activity for 60 minutes a day. The event also featured a Q & A session with students on Tuesday, Sept. 18. Following the Q & A session, the players and officers led approximately 200 children in a Play 60 Junior Chargers Training Camp.

Key representatives of the Los Angeles Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park will host an informational meeting regarding stadium construction.

The weekly city council meeting got underway on schedule and the first matter of business was the Fiscal Year 20182019 Budget which was prepared by the Finance Department and presented to the members. Mayor Butts aptly pointed out that last year the City of Inglewood had an $18 million deficit but will enter the next fiscal year with a $50 million surplus in the General Fund.

Letters from the Office of the City Attorney recommending denial of several claims were approved by the city council setting the stage for further legal action on the part of the claimants.

The council adopted a resolution reaffirming and/or appointing City representatives to the Governing Board of the Independent Cities Risk Management Authority, as recommended by the City Attorney’s office.

The council approved the Minutes for the Council Meetings held on July 17, 2018, July 24, 2 018, July 26, 2018, July 31, 2018, August 7, 2018, August 14, 2018, and August 21, 2018, that were presented by the City Clerk’s office.

Council approved an Exclusive Negotiating Agreement (ENA) by and between the City of Inglewood and Prairie Station, LLC, (the “Developer”), subject to the California Department of Finance’s approval of the Long Range Property Management Plan (LRPMP) of the City of Inglewood as Successor Agency to the Inglewood Redevelopment Agency for disposition of all former Inglewood

The Mistress of Ceremonies was Josefa Salinas, Radio Personality, Journalist and Author.

Kudos to Council Member Alex Padilla for organizing this family event that was an excellent opportunity for the rich Hispanic culture of Inglewood to be exposed to the entire community.

TO REPRESENT INGLEWOOD’S COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER Things in the City of Inglewood have been especially good over the last few days and as the publisher of INGLEWOOD TODAY, Inglewood’s longest running news publication, I am very proud to be an important part of an exciting community that has excellent elected leadership, a tolerant and mixed community, and one that is on the verge of very substantial developments.

Our elected leadership, led by Mayor James T. Butts, has ushered in a wave of innovation, renovation and growth that is second-to-none in our nation.

The council is balanced out with four independent thinkers who seem to understand what it takes to support and sustain a small metropolis and what it takes to make it grow.

Last weekend the Hispanic Heritage Festival was a tremendous success. From the entertainment and food choices to the information booths and activities for children, it seemed to me that everyone had a great time. What I also observed and found heart-warming, was the manner in which black and Hispanic children played together, waiting their turn to enter the inflatable play areas. It was a refreshing respite from what we are seeing from the adult elected officials in Washington at this time.

I extend my kudos to council member Padilla for spear-heading this epic event.

Later in the week, I had the pleasure of entering the bowl of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers stadium that is 50 percent completed and expected to host its first NFL game in 2020. While most of my friends and neighbors in the City of Inglewood have only been able to observe the massive structure that has emerged from the ground of the old Hollywood Park Racetrack and Casino site, it was nearly breath taking to enter the bowl to see what has been done 100 feet underground.

While the primary purpose is to build

a world-class sports venue, as a businessman, it is only natural that I think about the economic growth and development that the new stadium and adjacent developments will mean to the City of Inglewood. From the 3,000 employees who enter our city each day to build the stadium, and the thousands who will continue to work until the stadium is completed, to the 1.5 million square feet of retail and office space, the 2,500 residences and the 20 acres of parks that will attract tourists and visitors from all over the world, it does not take a CPA to notice that the sales tax and retail sales tax revenue will be enormous!

From an employment perspective, as the City of Inglewood is now experiencing near-record levels of employment, it was refreshing to hear directly from LA Rams COO Ken Demott, that the stadium had met its local hiring goals and that an on-site training program had been established to support local and other prospective employees who wanted to work.

As I think about the comparative difference between the old Senior Center on Centinela, which had nothing but a dining area for seniors to the new Senior Center that opened under the leadership of Mayor Butts and the city council, which has every option anyone could wish for, I am proud of the City of Inglewood.

When I review the city’s fiscal health and the hefty budget surplus, compared to the deficiencies we have experienced in the past, I am proud of the City of Inglewood.

When see what the LA Rams and LA Chargers are doing for the students of Inglewood, much at Mayor Butts’ urging, I am proud of the City of Inglewood.

And finally, when I look into the crystal ball of the City of Inglewood’s future, with all that is coming, I hope you will join me in saying, “I am proud of the City of Inglewood.

Wells is a writer now and was recently replying to a question on Quora that asks, ‘Is Barack Obama a nice person when there isn’t a camera around?’ Wells didn’t hold back…

He wrote: “During my tenure with the U.S. Secret Service, I was part of (then) Senator Barack Obama’s protection detail from March 2007 until November 2008, on his election night.

I was chosen as part of a ’round robin’ detail where agents were selected at random from their field offices to spend time with a candidate on the campaign trail to keep him safe.”

“This protection detail is known as C.N.O.S. (Campaign Nominee Operation Section) and is basically the rotation that the U.S. Secret Service goes through during the Election season.

Sen. Obama was given protection unusually early due to the volume of threats that he was receiving.

The rotation consisted of being out on the road with him 24/7 for three week intervals, home for six weeks, and then back out again. It was like this for 18 months.”

This was before his Presidency, just think what the Secret Service was like after

that!

He went onto say: “I made it a point to remain unbiased in my political opinions when asked about Mr. Obama while on this assignment.

I also tend to judge others by how they treat me rather than how they expect to be treated.

I will say that, personally, I have differed on many of President Obama’s stances in politics. I do not support much of his political agenda.

With that stated… Senator Obama, Mrs. Obama and their two daughters were always extremely cordial and appreciative for everything that we provided them.”

“They were engaging with us, asking us about our families and making sure that we were provided for.

On numerous occasions, Mr. Obama would ask me how my wife was doing (she was pregnant with our first child), and wished her the best.

I never, never saw him belittle another person, I never witnessed him do anything behind his wife’s back. For all of my political differences with Barack Obama, I will be the first to say that he is a very decent man.”

No matter what your politics are, we can say for a fact that Obama never tweeted about fake news 240 times as President.

LA STADIUM AND ENTERTAINMENT

CONSTRUCTION SITE Continued from page 1

15,000 tons of reinforcement steel in concrete and erecting the blade column segments, which support the roof canopy. The structural retaining wall, which is a Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) system, is nearly complete and contains 1,108 miles of steel straps, almost twice the length of the Pacific Coast Highway. The actual football field is approximately 100 feet below grade level and currently, there are 12 cranes involved in construction.

The crane responsible for lifting the canopy steel is the Demag CC 12600 and is one of the largest cranes in the world, measuring nearly as tall as the length of a football and whose foot print is about the size of a greyhound bus. The pieces of the crane were transported to the site by 238 trucks and two separate cranes were used to assemble the crane over four weeks.

The canopy is comprised of three parts; the steel compression ring, the cable net system and the ETFE layer. The first pick of canopy steel was completed on August 25th and the piece weighed 2.4 million pounds.

The canopy requires 38 precast concrete support columns which are manufactured on site.

The LA Stadium will provide for a seating capacity of 70,240, expandable up to 100,000, with 280 luxury suites, more than 13,000 premium seats, and three million square feet of usable space. The project will also include a 6,000-seat performance venue located under the same roof canopy as the stadium.

In addition to being the home field for the Rams and Chargers, the stadium will

host year-round sports and entertainment events and has already secured Super Bowl LVI in February 2022, the College Football National Championship game in 2023 and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2028 Olympic Games.

Adjacent to the stadium and performance venue, the project anticipates more than 1.5 million square feet of retail and office space, 2,500 residences, a hotel and more than 20 acres of parks. The long-term plans offer the possibility of developing additional phases over time.

“We are very proud of the contributions we are making to the citizens of Inglewood and the adjacent communities,” Ken Demott, LA Rams COO said, “the transformation of the Hollywood Park site is one of the greatest transformations in the world.”

Both teams are coming won their games last Sunday. The Rams shut out the Arizona Cardinals 34-0 at home and the Chargers beat the Buffalo Bills 31-20 on the road. The game will be televised on Channel 2.

If one team has the edge it appears to be the 2-0 Rams. Right now they look like the best team in the National Football League. Their defense held Arizona to five first downs and their offense, with the addition of Brandin Cooks looks unstoppable.

After the game on Sunday Rams coach Sean McVay talked about the win over the Cardinals. “Great team win today. I thought the defense was outstanding They brought it from the start. Special teams was also excellent as well. Offensively we were able to capitalize on some great short fields. You can’t say enough about the team. I thought our coaches did an excellent job. We’ll enjoy this one and then you have to get ready for a great Charger team.”

Next weeks’ Ram, Charger game should be entertaining. Both teams have explosive offenses but the difference in the game will probably be Rams wide receiver Cooks. His

speed and his ability to catch the ball in the middle of the field despite being only 5’10 and 183 pounds puts the Rams in a whole different offensive category.

Against the Cardinals Cooks caught seven passes for 159 yards. “Brandin did a great job,” said McVay. “I thought he was aggressive with his hands attacking the football on a variety of ways and he made plays down the field and he made plays over the middle.”

The Rams have a lot of outstanding offensive weapons this year but quarterback Jared Goff is the straw that stirs the coffee. He completed 24 of 32 passes for 354 yards against the Cardinal. He looks more comfortable in his third season.

The 1-1 Chargers also have a quarterback who is playing well. Phillip Rivers completed 23 out of 27 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns and right now the 15 year NFL veteran looks like he discovered the fountain of youth. On Sunday he completed passes to six different receivers.

This will be a big game for the Chargers. Can they put together a complete game without dropped passes and mental mistakes? If they can play smart football they have a chance to upset the Rams.

Ram quarterback Jared Goff went 24 of 32 for 354 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the 34-0 win over the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday at the Coliseum.

Rams play the Chargers Sunday at the Colisem at 1 p.m.

Charger quarterback Phillip Rivers hands the ball off to running back Melvin Gordon during a game against the Kansas City Chiefs a few weeks ago at home. The Chargers hope to upset the Rams on Sunday.

Tyler Vaughns of USC and the rest of the Trojans hope to get back on the winning track against Washington State Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Coliseum. They have lost two games in a row.

Diego Rossi of the LAFC is on the move last Saturday night at the Banc of California Stadium during their 1-1 tie against New England. They face San Jose Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at home. The Los Angeles Football Club is 13-7-8.
