INGLEWOOD, 4TH OF JULY, 61 YEARS AGO

By Dispatches from Skip Gorman’s Audioblog You had to be there. The decade was the fifties, the place was Inglewood, California, half a block from Centinela Park, and for us the Fourth of July was indeed the best of times. We kids (the six of us) made out like bandits on the Fourth of July plus we got to enjoy a wonderful fireworks show in the park. See, this particular holiday meant streetwise hustle and applied capitalism. We never much associated the Fourth with American Independence or patriotism. To us it was mostly about easy money and finders keepers. Centinela Park had the best fireworks show our side of the nearby Coliseum at Exposition Park. People drove in from all over town to BBQ and picnic and play in the park until nightfall when the fireworks get started. The trouble (for them) was the lack of available parking. This is where we made our driveway and front yard into a grassy little parking lot. Other neighbors did the same thing but we were generally the cheapest and easily the most aggressive at directing

them in. I think we charged $2.00 and never had a dent. Pop loved it. $16.00 of easy money in a good year and we even had returning customers over the years. A further opportunity in all this was the fact that the park had very little lighting. So after the fireworks ended, all the picnic blankets and stuff had to be gathered up by the visiting families and toted out to there cars in the dark. It was wonderfully dark and not everybody brought flashlights. So lots of nifty stuff got lost. This is where the coolness of the Fifth of July comes in. Inglewood’s Finest patrolled the park after dark to discourage nighttime “treasure hunters”. But the park was a cluttered and trashed mess that desperately needed to be cleaned-up so in the cold gray dawn the Parks Maintenance guys “hired” us kids to help them do it. We were told to turn-in all wallets and jewelry and wrist watches we found but we could keep any loose change and pocket knives and sunglasses and sports equipment and uneaten cupcakes (or

whatever) that we came across as we collected trash and helped them cleanup the park. It was like Easter and some years the picking was bountiful. By noon

we were generally done and each had a satisfactory amount of found money and lots of nifty stuff for trading or selling

LOS ANGELES LAKERS GRAB LEBRON JAMES By Francis Taylor, Asst. Editor

Probably the biggest news this week in Los Angeles, especially among sports fans, is that LeBron James signed

a four-year $154 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. It was the largest amount the Lakers could offer and it is significant that James elected to sign a four-year deal, compared to a more popular two-year deal for free agents, which would have given him the option to become a free agent after two years. With Earvin “Magic” Johnson as the Lakers president of basketball operations, it would appear that James trusts that Magic will restore the Lakers to the prominence it held when he and his teammates dominated the NBA in the ‘80s and ‘90s at the Inglewood Forum, giving the City of Inglewood the moniker, the City of Champions. Magic appears to be well on the way to helping the Lakers recapture

its glory. After acquiring James, the Lakers agreed to bring back Kentavious Caldwell-Pope on a $12 million deal; inked a one-year deal for Lance Stephenson for $4.4 million ; a one-year minimum deal for JaVale McGee and, a one-year, $9 million deal for Rajon Rondo. The Lakers could definitely use a sharpshooter on the wing and a stretch-four. If they don’t add anybody who fits either of those descriptions, they will be betting on improvement by their existing players. Kyle Kuzma, for example, might be able to

WE’VE GOT TO DO A BETTER JOB

PRESIDENT/PUBLISHER/ EDITOR Willie Brown VICE PRESIDENT Gloria Kennedy

I love LA, I do, but we have a reputation for rudeness that needs to change. To be fair, it isn’t only us, San Diego and San Francisco have the same problem. I recently ran across a list of the 31 rudest cities in America; LA was #9, San Diego #11, and San Francisco was #24. So, yet again, LA leads the way but this isn’t such a good thing to be a leader in. Oh sure, we expect surly New York City to make the list, but trailing behind LA, San Diego, and San Francisco at #26 this year?? Oh, my. Travel + Leisure magazine does this survey of their readers every year. NYC seems to be #1 most years, but LA has made the list for the past few years. Not only has LA made the list, it has topped the list three times and is often in the Top Five Rudest Cities in America. Okay, to be fair, every major city with a heavy tourist population is either on the list or has made it in the past – even Atlanta, just dripping with Southern hospitality – has made the list more than once. Tourists are a fickle lot. They love, love, love you one minute, but if they perceive a slight, it’s all over. However, we can’t blame it all on them. Residents have plenty of highly visible not-so-good traits

idents in particular, about a year and a half to hone our ‘nice’ skills. All of LA needs to work on their patience, being friendly, and ‘make nice’ skills, but Inglewood residents must be top-notch since the stadium is in our town. It is up to us to lead the way and we can do it. Practice being courteous and civil and kind and helpful with a smile on your face and a smile in your voice. It’s not hard and if we start now, by the time the stadium is completed and Rams and Chargers fans start pouring into Inglewood, this nice thing will be second nature to us.

we exhibit, among them road rage, cutting off drivers, answering questions in a less than gracious manner (and sometimes not answering at all), and a propensity for dissing (loudly and long) others choice of a sports team favorite. Just holding a door open for someone goes a long way and thanking someone who held a door for you makes you look mighty good. This is the middle of 2018 and the NFL stadium will be finished in a couple of years. That gives Inglewood res-

SOUTH L.A. MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO THREATENING INGLEWOOD COURTHOUSE By Inglewood News Service

A South Los Angeles man pleaded guilty Monday to making a bizarre series of online threats to kill law enforcement personnel and disrupt proceedings at the Inglewood courthouse and elsewhere. John Patrice Hale, 42, who used the online moniker “Frost K Blizzard,” entered his plea to a federal count of making threats to injure in interstate commerce, which means that he used the internet in making the threats. The charge carries a possible prison term of up to five years, but Hale’s plea deal calls for a sentence of no more than 18 months. Hale made the online threats in May 2017, after a real estate broker commenced legal proceedings in the Inglewood Courthouse to evict him and others from a home in the area. The threats were an effort to disrupt those proceedings and to retaliate against the broker,

as well as to disrupt his stepdaughter’s job at a Los Angeles moving and storage company after the pair had an argument, according to his plea agreement. In the messages, Hale threatened to set off explosives planted in sheriff ’s vehicles at the courthouse. The threat prompted the evacuation of the courthouse, and both the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department’s Arson and Explosives Unit and the Threat Interdiction Unit responded. In court, as Assistant U.S. Attorney George E. Pence read aloud the messages Hale admitted sending, the defendant put his head in his hands. Defense attorney Deborah Elise Gonzalez motioned for him to take a seat, where Hale sat doubled over. Asked by U.S. District Judge Dale S. Fischer to explain in his own words what he had done, Hale responded, “I sent

threats to Inglewood police.” The judge accepted the statement. As Pence explained, two threats were made to the sheriff ’s department, through its Court Services Division website, on May 15, 2017, with the sender promising to “take out as many officers that pull out (of) your parking structure.” Two more threats made a day later warned of explosives planted under a patrol car at the Inglewood sheriff ’s station, saying the impact would be felt for “half city block.” The threats again prompted a significant response by law enforcement and evacuation of the Inglewood courthouse. In addition to those threats, Hale sent a threat to the moving company that employed his stepdaughter on May 23, 2017, that read: “All praises to Allah. Today, we will detonate an explosive at your

NEW SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGES AGAINST

HARVEY WEINSTEIN By Francis Taylor, Asst. Editor

Earlier this year, Harvey Weinstein was charged with three indictments, including rape and sexual assault, relating to alleged incidents involving two women, in 2004 and 2013. He pleaded not guilty when he was brought before a New York court. Last week, New York District Attorney Cyrus Vance revealed that new charges had been brought in relation to an alleged assault on a third woman.

COMMUNITY CLIPPERS GOT RELIEF FROM CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY ACT (CEQA) By: Francis Taylor, Asst. Editor The Clippers received, from the Legislature, special treatment on environmental regulations to build the Inglewood basketball arena faster. The Oakland A’s are also likely to get special legislation to expedite building a new baseball stadium for their franchise. In recent years, the Legislature and Gov. Jerry Brown have smoothed the regulatory process for the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors to construct fancy basketball arenas. But what about less glamorous, more modest housing developments? Or retail stores? Industrial parks? They’re still stuck with the pokey California Environmental Quality Act, or CEQA, which project opponents too often abuse to wrest financial concessions from developers, or to kill potential competition. “The irony is that millionaire athletes and billionaire team owners are getting [CEQA] exemptions, but middle-class home builders are not,” complains Dan Dunmoyer, president and chief executive of the California Building Industry Assn. “CEQA no longer is what it was intended to be. There’s no way California is going to meet its housing needs for the foreseeable future without CEQA reform.” Signed 48 years ago by Gov. Ronald Reagan, CEQA requires builders and other entrepreneurs to undergo a long, costly process of detailing their projects’ environmental effects. The act deserves credit for helping to clean up the air, keep water pure and prevent greedy developers from building on fragile earthquake faults. But CEQA has also been blatantly abused, for example by union blackmailers, “greenmailers, ” who threaten to file environmental suits and derail projects unless developers cave to labor demands. Business rivals also try to drive off potential competitors by filing time-consum-

ing environmental lawsuits. The investor finally is forced to cut losses and drop the project. “CEQA originally was a good law,” Assembly Republican Leader Brian Dahle of Lassen County says. “But it turned into something used for extortion and to keep other businesses out.” On higher ground ethically are the NIMBYs — “not in my backyard” — who fight local projects because they would crowd their spaces or block their views. Yet, California faces an affordable housing crisis, and new dwellings must be built somewhere. “CEQA suits are overwhelmingly filed against environmentally benign projects by people using them for nonenvironmental reasons,” land use attorney Jennifer Hernandez of Berkeley once told me. She’s a lawyer who usually represents project sponsors. But she’d also just studied 600 CEQA lawsuits and published a report that validated her statement. Back to sports teams and the Clippers. Since CEQA suits can last years, what’s mostly sought is fast-tracking through the litigation swamp. The main benefit bestowed by the Legislature has been a nine-month limit on court proceedings concerning environmental challenges. Under the nine-month limit, environmental regulations remain essentially the same, but the review process is greatly expedited. Also, judges can’t stop construction unless there’s an imminent safety risk. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer — the former Microsoft CEO who’s worth an estimated $38 billion, has vowed to move his team out of the downtown Los Angeles Staples Center and into a new, stateof-the-art arena in Inglewood. The new

These charges are among some of the most serious sexual offences that exist under New York’s Penal Law. Allegations against Weinstein first emerged in October of 2017 in reports in the New York Times and the New Yorker. The claims against a man who had for decades been a Hollywood power broker, led to a flood of further accusations, not only against Weinstein, but other powerful figures in industries ranging from classical music to highend catering. They helped trigger the #MeToo movement, in which women, and men, shared stories of sexual assault and abuse they had suffered on social media. Many said they were speaking out for the first time, or that their claims had previously been ignored. When Weinstein appeared in the New York Supreme Court, he pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on $1m bail. His lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, claimed the accusations against him were “absurd” and sought to question the integrity of Weinstein’s alleged victims.

On Monday, Mr Brafman issued a statement in which he again asserted his client’s innocence. The movie producer is scheduled to appear in court on 9 July to answer the latest charges. The three new charges against Weinstein carried a minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. “The new charges are in addition to those contained in the previous indictment of Weinstein on charges of rape in the first and third degrees, as well as criminal sexual act in the first degree, for forcible sexual acts against two women in 2013 and 2004, respectively,” he said.

arena will cost about $1.2 billion. But the Clippers’ lease at Staples expires after the 2024 season. So either he builds relatively quickly or he doesn’t build at all. Staples, according to Ballmer, is outdated. It accommodates hockey and isn’t cozy enough for basketball. Also, the Clippers are third in line for game dates behind the Kings and the Lakers. The Clippers are forced to play too many Saturday afternoon games, he said, “when everyone else is out in the sun.” Plus, Ballmer added, Inglewood “badly needs jobs. We’ll be an investment in the community, on land where you can’t build homes.” The arena site is under the L.A. International Airport flight path. Won’t the jet noise be aggravating during games — an environmental problem? No, he answered. “We’re going to build an arena that’s great for concerts.” The Clippers’ bill, AB 987, sailed out of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee on a unanimous bipartisan vote. So did the bill to help the A’s. When the bills reach Brown’s desk, he probably won’t hesitate to sign them. He has advocated CEQA reform for years without doing much. “I don’t know,” says the bill’s author, new Assemblywoman Sydney Kamlager-

Dove (D-Los Angeles), who represents Inglewood. “He’s a mercurial governor. So I don’t count my chickens before they hatch.” The Sierra Club opposes the legislation. “We’re against the weakening of CEQA, generally,” says Sierra Club lobbyist Kyle Jones. The state Judicial Council opposes it, too. It “pushes other cases on the courts’ dockets to the back of the line,” the council declares. “Such preferential treatment is fundamentally at odds with how our justice system has historically functioned.” Sacramento should greatly increase court funding so all civil cases can be heard much faster. And it should reform CEQA. But Democrats won’t cross environmentalists or, especially labor unions. The Legislature is moving a bill to fasttrack CEQA during rebuilding for victims of last year’s wine country wildfires. That’s good. And it recently passed a bill to fast-track construction of a new legislative office building. What’s good for billionaires and legislators should be good for everyone.

THE INGLEWOOD CITY COUNCIL DID NOT MEET ON JULY 3, 2018. By Francis Taylor, Assistant Editor

Los Angeles police have responded after a video posted on social media, showing at least five officers with their guns drawn as they arrest a woma, who appears cooperative and unarmed, drew

ire from some in the community. The 45 seconds of footage begin as the woman is standing outside the front driver’s side of a dark-colored sedan pulled over on the side of the road, and

it’s unclear exactly what led up to the police encounter. The man narrating the video says it’s occurring near the intersection of La Cienega Boulevard and Centinela Av-

enue, which is on the border of Inglewood and Westchester. The clip was posted to Twitter just after 3:15 p.m. on Monday, but in a reply the poster says it happened

later. Despite the accouterments of anger these days including road rage, too many guns, social media commentary and single-finger salutes, recognize that they are all born mostly of frustration (often mixed with stupidity) but they culminate in head-on collisions, and threatening Facebook commentary threads. Dude! Take a deep breath, have a cold beverage and enjoy the 4th of July 2018.

SPOOKED WITH 4TH FIREWORKS

You probably already know you need to keep your pets inside during the Fourth of July to prevent them from getting spooked by – and possibly running away from – the explosions of fireworks. But those scary sounds can make their way into your home, too. Here’s how to make the night better for you and your dog using distracting sounds and gentle pressure. Your TV or stereo can be dog’s best friends during loud explosions. They can be used to drown out the unusual sounds with something more normal. Turn the television up loud, snuggle on the couch and eat some treats. If you’d rather listen to music, turn up the tunes and dance the night away with your pup. While you might want to put on relaxing music, it likely won’t be able to drown out the fireworks. Instead, make a special playlist or station for the night including your favorite upbeat music on an your favorite app. Just make sure to use external speakers, rather than the ones on your laptop or phone, so the music is loud enough to cover up the pops

Is Less White,

and bangs. Another way to drown out the noise is to take your dog to a bedroom and turn on a loud fan. Bedrooms typically have plenty of soft objects that absorb sounds, dulling the commotion of fireworks. The fan will provide some white noise that will also help to lessen the sound. If all loud noises (including music, television and fans) freak your dog out, there are some quieter options. Human babies are calmer when swaddled in a blanket because it provides gentle pressure that’s soothing. Fur babies are the same way. Swaddling a dog with a blanket can be difficult, though, especially with larger dogs. A better choice is to use a compression suit or vest. From me and the staff of INGLEWOOD TODAY, have a safe and pleasant 4th of July!

HHHHHH

Your Future Is Greater Than Your Past. Think, Act, Believe, and Own it.

The nation’s over/under age demarcation line rose to 38.0 years, according to 2017 estimates released from the U.S. Census Bureau. In 2000, the median age was 37.2 years. “Baby boomers, and millennials alike, are responsible for this trend in increased aging,” said Molly Cromwell, a demographer at the U.S. Census Bureau. “Boomers continue to age and are slowly outnumbering children as the birth rate has declined steadily over the last decade.” By 2035, Americans age 65 and older are forecast to outnumber kids for the first time. While the majority of counties in the U.S. continued to grow older, about half of the counties getting younger were in the Midwest. “Williams County, N.D., had the largest decrease in median age, declining by 7.1 years,” Cromwell said. Increasingly, the nation’s population is living in metropolitan areas. Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Arizona gained one spot to move ahead of San Francisco as the 11th largest metro area. In the buckeye state, Columbus moved ahead of Cleveland. New York led all states in domestic migration as over million people have left the state since April 1, 2010. From July, 1 2016 to July 1, 2017, 190,508 people left New York and 138,195 left California. But, California was net positive as 164,867 international migrants moved to the state. Net migration was negative in 14 states plus Puerto Rico last year. The populations in eight states plus Puerto Rico shrank in size last year. Diversity Trends - America is becoming more diverse by race and ethnicity. Non-Hispanic whites are

shrinking in population, while all other race and ethnic groups grew between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017. Non-Hispanic white alone population decreased .02 percent to 197.8 million. The non-Hispanic white alone population is projected to continue aging and decline in terms of size. The Hispanic population increased 2.1 percent to 58.9 million, and made up 18.1 percent of the nation’s total population in 2017. The gain was primarily due to natural increases (the difference between births and deaths), not net migration. California had the largest Hispanic population at 15.5 million. More blacks or African-American moved to Clark County, Nevada, the county holding Las Vegas, than to any other county (14,000). The black or African-American population increased 1.2 percent to 47.4 million. The Asian population, the fastestgrowing racial group in the nation, increased 3.1 percent to 22.2 million. Their increase is primarily due to net migration. In Hawaii, Asian’s represented a majority of the population.

bring his 36.6 percent 3-point percentage up when he’s receiving passes from the likes of James, Rondo and an improved Ball. Ball could become more consistent with his long-range jumper in his second season. It is also significant to note that James’ current supporting cast is mostly guys who James can make better, as he did in Cleveland, rather than the other way around. In order for James to have an ideal amount of room to operate with the ball in his hands, he needs floorspacers.

As presently constructed, though, the roster looks like this: starters: Ball, Caldwell-Pope, Ingram, James, McGee and reserves: Kuzma, Hart, Rondo, Stephenson, Deng, Moritz Wagner, Ivica Zubac. Lakers fans will certainly have something to look forward to in the 2018-19 season while Los Angeles Clippers fans are waiting, with baited breath, for the plans Jerry West will implement to make the Lakers’ cross-town rival more competitive.

HOST A BETTER-FOR-YOU

BARBECUE

A traditional backyard barbecue is typically filled with a wide array of tempting foods that make it hard to keep a healthy eating plan on track. With a few simple modifications to your menu, you can transform your grilling party into a spread of better-for-you foods you can still enjoy. Get creative on the grill. An easy swap like chicken or pork instead of burgers and brats is an instant nutrition boost. Use wood chips or a marinade to create a main dish so tasty you’ll forget it’s a health-conscious choice. Put produce front and center. There’s no time like summer to enjoy the bounty of the garden, so -pile on the veggies in place of dense, calorie-laden sides. A crisp, refreshing salad, lightly seasoned veggies on the grill and even fresh raw veggies with a light yogurt dip can all be healthier additions to your barbecue menu. Make apps amazing. A health-conscious meal doesn’t have to mean eliminating entire courses. Appetizers while you wait for the grill to heat are particularly a requirement, after all. Instead of the typical rich, creamy dips, try a lighter approach, like these cracker canapés. Add a special touch with Crunchmaster crackers, which are gluten-free, non-GMO and full of flavor. Made with wholesome ingredients from trusted sources and available in Sea Salt, Roasted Vegetable, Applewood Smoked BBQ and Aged White Cheddar flavors, these snacks are crafted to fit healthy lifestyles.
