Primary Victory Belongs to ‘Generations of Women,’ Clinton Says

illary Clinton made history Tuesday night when she won the California primary election, making her the first presumptive major-party female nominee. Clinton defeated her closest Democratic rival Bernie Sanders 55.8% to 43.2%.

“Thanks to you, we reached a milestone,” she told excited supporters in Brooklyn. She added: “Tonight’s victory is not about one person, it belongs to generations of women and men who sacrificed and made this moment possible.”

Mathematically, it is no longer possible for Sanders to reach the 2,383 delegates needed to win the nomination. Still, he fights on…

d Vincent Park is lush with green spaces for picnics, an afternoon read, soccer, football, a fresh basketball court, skate park, swimming pool, and a beautiful amphitheater that has hosted some amazing concerts. We walk the park, run the park, and even entertain games of chicken with the local family of squirrels who make their way onto the walkways and our picnic blankets.

Going Down the Road

P

articularly in Southern California, we are a car society, and we auto drivers feel we own the road. After all, the freeways were built for us. But we need to learn to share the road with bicycle riders.

Those who ride bicycles need to understand that they, too, are required to follow the same rules of the road.

Bike lanes are all over LA and more are added each year. Eventually, there will be bike lanes on all major roadways. The lanes on Florence are ‘dedicated’ bike lanes, but as Inglewood adds more, there will also be ‘shared’ lanes. These are meant to be shared by cars and bicycles.

Part of sharing the road is being an ‘active’ driver. Active driving is doing nothing but driving – handsfree cell phone use and no texting.

As a friend pointed out, texting while driving may be even more dangerous than drunk driving; at least the drunk driver is trying to focusing on the road.

Technology has been a blessing

Last week, on a highway in another state, Brennan was struck by a car travelling 65 mph while the young driver was texting. His bicycle was destroyed and his helmet was broken in two. Brennan has a broken pelvis, a concussion, staples in his scalp and stitches in his face, and is in intensive care.

The Rebirth of the Inglewood Playhouse (Continued from page 1) for the last 15 years, the Inglewood Playhouse laid vacant and unutilized, leaving residents and visitors wondering just what fate had in store for the building that once brought performing arts and culture to the city.

Over the weekend, the Inglewood Playhouse, a venue that seats close to 60 guests, was standing-roomonly as the city celebrated the site’s re-opening and introduction of new quality performing arts programming.

Mayor Butts said, “Everything we do in this city, from here on out, is history now. You’ll be the ones to say, I remember when they opened the playhouse, I remember the first performance that was there. I was there when they turned the corner.”

The restoration of the site was performed by Clark Construction, the construction team who is responsible for renovating the Fabulous Forum.

Mike Bradford of Clark Construction said, “My team was lucky enough to win the renovation of the Forum project and that’s what introduced me to Inglewood, and I’m a huge fan of this city and the growth that you’re experiencing now.

Balancing the Scales

The Fairest of Them All?

S

ince 1949, wage discrimination based on gender has been illegal in California under the California Equal Pay Act. Despite the Equal Pay Act and federal laws designed to address gender-based wage discrimination, significant wage disparities continue to exist between men and women.

Recent studies demonstrate that in California, a woman working yearround and full-time earned an average (median) of 84 cents for every dollar earned by a man, amounting to an annual wage gap of $8,053. To make matters worse, this disparity is even greater for Latinas, African American women and Asian women, who are paid 43 cents, 63 cents, and 72 cents, respectively, for every dollar paid to white men. All told, the gender-based wage gap costs California women working fulltime more than $39 billion per year.

In order to address these continuing disparities, in October 2015, Governor Brown signed into law the California Fair Pay Act (“CFPA”), which became effective in January of this year. Described by many as the strongest equal pay

ampaigning ahead of wife Hillary for the California Democratic primary, and taking jabs at GOP candidate Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton stopped in Inglewood on June 4th to fire up local voters.

Appearing at Center Park with U.S. Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Inglewood Mayor James Butts, the 42nd U.S. president drew a clear distinction between Hillary and the presumptive Republican nominee. Slamming Trump’s campaign slogan, “Making America Great Again,” Clinton said: “He means: ‘I’ll make it the way it used to be.’ Well it wasn’t so great for a lot of people,” he told an audience of largely African American and Latino voters.

Praising President Barack Obama’s work in saving America from near economic collapse, he stressed the importance of high voter turnout in communities of color. The next day, Clinton drew more crowds when he ate at the Serving Spoon, a popular Inglewood restaurant.

The Clintons have a strong voter base among African Americans.

Hillary Clinton has done well with older blacks in several state primary elections this year. Latino voters have split the Democratic vote between Hillary and Bernie Sanders.

Johnny Darnell Griggs law in the United States, the CFPA seeks to strengthen the California Equal Pay Act by closing loopholes that prevent effective enforcement of existing laws, and by creating greater transparency by permitting employees to discuss their wages without fear of retaliation.

The CFPA made several important changes to existing California law.

Among other things, the new law: • Changes the “equal pay for equal work” and the “same establishment” requirements. Before passage of the CFPA, Cali-

fornia employers were prohibited from paying an employee less than an employee of the opposite sex “in the same establishment for equal work.” This was generally interpreted to prohibit employers from paying employees of the opposite sex less for the same job in the same location. The CFPA eliminates the requirement that the pay disparity occur “within the same establishment,” and eliminates the concept of “equal work.” Instead, the CFPA prohibits an employer from paying an employee less than employees of the opposite sex for “substantially similar work, when viewed as a composite of skill effort and responsibility.” No longer is the wage comparison limited to the exact same job in the same location.

• Limits factors an employer may use to defend wage disparities. Existing law provides a defense or exception for wage disparities where they are justified by “a seniority system, a merit system, a system which measures earnings by quantity or quality of production, or a differential based on any bona fide factor other than sex.” The CFPA

retains these exceptions. However, under the CFPA, an employer may not invoke “the bona fide factor other than sex” exception unless it can demonstrate that the factor is not derived from or based on a sex-based differential in compensation, is job-related with respect to the position, and is consistent with a business necessity. The employer must now also demonstrate that each factor relied upon is applied reasonably, and that one or more of the factors relied upon account for the entire wage disparity.

• Increases wage transparency and prohibits retaliation. The CFPA also seeks to reduce secrecy surrounding wages and increase wage transparency by creating additional protections that prohibit employers from adopting policies or rules, or engaging in any conduct, designed to prohibit employees from discussing wages (either their own or those of others). In addition, employers may not retaliate against employees for aiding and encouraging other employees to avail themselves of their rights under the CFPA. (Continued on page 10)

Construction on the new Senior Center is moving right along. The council approved second, third and fourth amendments to agreements for various construction services.

The new center will be located at 111 North Locust Street.

Two public hearings were set. The first will consider the Inglewood Housing Authority (IHA) Fiscal Year 2016-2017 Annual Plan, and was set for June 28, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. The second hearing, set for July 12, 2016 at 2:00 p.m., will consider approval of an amendment to Chapter 2, Article 5, Sections 2-198.1 and deletion of Section 2-198.3 of the Inglewood Municipal Code.

Will You Be Next to Make History?

L

ast night Hillary Clinton made history as the first woman named the presumptive presidential nominee for a major-party. Closer to home, a local hero, Willie Agee was honored by having the new playhouse at Edward Vincent Jr. Park named after him.

About two weeks ago, Inglewood was named as the site for the 2021 Super Bowl—another first.

Because recognition comes in many different forms and levels, most of us don’t think of ourselves as history makers. But, really we are all change agents in some way. It’s just a matter of doing something new, being the first to do it, or doing it in a different way or place.

The spotlight is clearly shining brightly on Inglewood. It seems our city is always in the news now for one reason or another. From the moment the Fabulous Forum reopened in 2014 to now, the media has been having a field day. The city has received coverage from all over the country for hosting the Jamaican Special Olympics delegation, ushering the Rams back to Southern California after a nearly 2 decades absence, and maintaining the lowest homicide rate since the police department began keeping records.

News camera crews are becoming common now in Inglewood.

History is happening every day, and it can happen to any one of us at any time. So my question to you is, what will your history be? Your legacy doesn’t have to make you famous. You could be the one person on your block to bring in your neighbor’s trash cans, the one who takes initiative to clean up your community when others are just complaining.

Will you be the one to mentor fatherless boys or motherless girls?

Willie Brown, Publisher, Inglewood Today Weekly a young black girl who wanted to read more books about girls who looked like her. She started a book drive, and before she knew it, had collected over 1,300 books! Now she spends time reading the books to children of all races because she wants them to know and appreciate black girls. She is looking to do something similar with Asian and Latino children. She made history by making it possible for others to learn about their history.

As Inglewood continues to turn the corner and grow into one of the nation’s most prominent cities, we can all share in a proud history. However, it begins with each individual. Obama Commutes More Life Sentences of Nonviolent Offenders

n estimated 2.2 million people are behind bars in the United States, including “the mentally ill and drug addicts,” and are often people of color.

Making good on his promise of criminal justice reform, President Barack Obama, on June 3, commuted prison sentences of 42 people who were locked up as nonviolent drug offenders, sources say. Under The Obama Administration, 348 prison sentences have been commuted—the most of any president in recent history.

The harsh prison terms were

doled out under “outdated and unduly harsh sentencing laws,” the White House said in a statement.

Most were “small-time drug dealers who received long sentences under a code shaped by the government’s war on drugs.”

Noting the thousands of men and women in federal prisons—many serving life sentences—the White House has called for the reduction of sentences and alternative forms of punishment.

Some prisoners will be released between October 1, 2016 and June 3, 2018.

“I said, what would you have me do, and he invited me to this place, and as he said when he opened up, it was in disrepair, again. What he wanted to do here was big and it was bold and I said, oh my gosh.

And, at a nice luncheon for the California Preservation awards, the mayor pulled me to the side and said, ‘I promised the city that playhouse, we’ve got to deliver.’ I hope you guys love it, it’s been a labor of love for us.”

Under the direction of playwright and Inglewood resident Brandon Rainey, a group of highly talented young singers, actors and dancers took to the stage to provide guests with a “snapshot” of some of the quality performances the community can expect once programming of the playhouse commences in the coming months.

One of the biggest advocates in the community, who most know for his unyielding love and support for this city and its regeneration is Willie Agee. Even in the days where it may have been difficult to see the beauty that lied within the city’s 9-square mile territory, Agee, remained resilient in his proclamation that we lived in the “Beautiful City of Inglewood!”

Remembering the Champ

M

uhammad Ali, the heavyweight boxing champion named Sportsman of the Century by Sports Illustrated magazine, died June 3, 2016. He was 74.

Born Cassius Clay Jan. 17, 1942, he began boxing as a preteen, enjoying an award-winning amateur career. He won six Golden Gloves titles in his home state of Kentucky, two national Golden Gloves titles and an Amateur Athletic Union National Title. His amateur career culminated with a gold medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy.

Clay moved to a professional boxing career shortly after winning Olympic gold, debuting with a win against Tunney Hunsaker in October 1960. He continued to win and soon began developing the cocky, self-promoting attitude that fans would come to love. He displayed it memorably as his 1964 fight against Sonny Liston approached. They would be fighting for the heavyweight championship, and Clay taunted his opponent before the fight, with his verbal jabs including the famous quote, “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. The hands can’t hit what the eyes can’t see.”

Fans initially mistook Clay’s grandstanding for nervousness, but in the end, Clay won both the fight and the heavyweight championship title, becoming the youngest heavyweight fighter ever to take the title from a reigning champion. In 1996, Ali was chosen to light the Olympic torch at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a member of the International

Boxing Hall of Fame, won the Arthur Ashe Courage Award in 1997, and received a Presidential Citizens Medal and a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

n search of an effective method to prevent muscle wasting that comes with illness and aging, researchers have located a natural compound that is very promising.

The findings reported in the June issue of Cell Metabolism (a Cell Press publication), identify a natural component of apple peels known as Ursolic Acid as a promising new nutritional therapy for the widespread and debilitating condition that affects nearly everyone at one time or another.

“Muscle wasting is a frequent companion of illness and aging,” explained researchers from The University of Iowa, Iowa City. “It prolongs hospitalization, delays recoveries and in some cases prevents people from going back home. It isn’t well understood, and there is no medicine for it.”

The research team first looked at what happens to gene activity in muscles under conditions that promote weakening. Those studies turned up 63 genes that change in response to fasting in both people and

When ursolic acid was added to the food of normal subjects for a period of weeks, their muscles grew.

Those effects were traced back to enhanced insulin signaling in muscle and to corrections in the gene signatures linked to atrophy.

hat is an ideal long term care facility? Various answers cropped up from the aged who, after all, make up a big percentage of the recipients of caring services in the USA, and elsewhere for that matter.

Most men and women in their retirement years still prefer to be cared for by their children right in the comforts of their homes. However true, there are some individuals accustomed to their independence and would rather be under the care of nursing institutions or retirement communities.

Living with your children and opting for the services of a nursing home or an assisted living facility have its advantages, but you shouldn’t discount the fact that each also has its downside.

For instance, home care will ensure you’re well taken care of because your kids or other relatives will be present 24/7 to assist you in all areas of activities of daily living (ADL),such as eating, bathing, using the toilet, dressing up, and performing house chores among others. Unfortunately, you cannot count on them to administer medications especially if you have a se-

rious health condition because they are not trained professionally on the medical or nursing field.

Those who can afford to pay a professional would prefer home health care and, thus, hire a licensed nurse or medical practitioner to look after them, and attend to their medical needs. However helpful this is to a patient, studies done on long term care show that the government will not shoulder the expenses of caring services performed in one’s home except if the reason behind it is medical.

Meanwhile, patients with low to no income are an exception in the eyes of the government. So even if the reason for their home care is nonmedical, the government will definitely consider paying the home care services that were provided to them.

Cost of Long Term Care Your budget for long term care will depend on your choice or type of long term care facility. If you will opt for home care or home health care, you will not spend as much as you would in a nursing home or assisted living facilities.

n our previous article, we talked about the importance of finding the right real estate consultant to represent you as well as having a title search performed on the property as soon as possible. Both of these important initial steps can help you to avoid potentially long closing delays. Following are additional important steps to take.

Price Your Home Appropriately Choosing the right real estate consultant and the right list price go handin-hand. Pricing a home properly is a skill that the best agents should possess. Everyone wants to sell for the highest possible price, but be careful, because pricing a home too high (often times based on emotion) will repel buyers and delay getting that perfect offer. If your home stays on the market too long, it could develop a stigma and be seen as less desirable by most buyers as they speculate as to why it hasn’t sold. This is especially true in a market where buyers are plentiful.

When your consultant recommends a listing price to you, they should take into account homes that have sold within your geographical area that closely match your home. They should take into account various factors that add to or take away from what your home should be listed at.

If the property is ‘marketed’ beyond the agent’s office, it takes twice as long to sell and will probably not get the highest possible dollar. Normally, this listing method does not represent the best interest of the seller.

Economics 101 would argue that if you have multiple buyers competing for the same commodity, then the price is invariably bid UP. When a property is listed through the ‘network’, not only is it on the multiple listing service, but it’s also automatically uploaded to Trulia, Zillow, Realtor.com, and several other online sites that are seen nationwide by buyers looking to purchase a property just like yours. For the greatest amount of visibility, insist that your consultant market your property to as many eyes as possible.

recently received this question from one of our readers: I know that credit is a huge part of home buying. If I cannot afford to pay a credit repair company, what can I do myself?

This is a question I get asked frequently. In the current market a lot of people find themselves between debt and a hard place. They are working hard, but with the cost of living as it is, and the prices of homes rising, some might find it more difficult to hand over a large sum of cash for credit repair services.

Let me reassure you, this can be done yourself. What you should be paying for when enlisting the help of a credit repair service is nothing more than their time—because this process will take time—and their relationships. Since they do this often, they may have good relationships with various merchants and can possibly work a better payoff rate than you could going it alone.

Now let’s talk about how to actually get this process started yourself.

By law, you’re entitled to a free credit report if a company takes “adverse action” against you, like denying your application for credit, insurance, or employment; and/or one free report a year if you’re unemployed and plan to look for a job within 60 days; if you’re on welfare; or if your report is inaccurate due to fraud, including identity theft.

Each of the national credit reporting companies—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—is required to provide you with a free copy of your credit report once every 12 months, if you ask for it.

Fixing your credit yourself doesn’t require a lot of tools or equipment.

The most costly thing of all will be the time you have to spend, which will vary depending on the number of discrepancies, your documentation of them and the merchant’s cooperation.

First, examine your credit report

and highlight any discrepancies you find. Second, you will want to search for any documentation you might have to support your claim.

Third, notify the credit reporting company, in writing, of any information you think is inaccurate. Include copies (NOT originals) of any documents that support your position. Send your letter by certified mail, “return receipt requested,” so you can document that the credit re-

Ongoing Talk to a Lawyer Online In cooperation with the City of Inglewood, the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) now offers a teleconferencing center at the Main Library, where you can speak to a lawyer live, and send them documents. They offer legal advice and guidance on a variety of civil matters, including evictions, divorces, and child custody. They can provide referrals to private attorneys, other legal services, or other resources as needed.
