Here are some quick self-investment tips from Inc.com that can go a long way, and don’t have to cramp your style of being young and free.

1. Gym membership. The U.S. leads the world on medical spending, with $2 trillion spent annually on healthcare expenses. It’s common knowledge that this number could be drastically reduced if people took better care of their health. Getting fit in your 20s prevents expensive health issues later in life, and for around $10 a week, a YMCA gym membership won’t break the bank either.

2. Social Media. According to a recent study, 18 to 34-year-old Americans spend on average 3.8 hours a day on social networking sites. How much of this time spent on making business connections and profiting from these platforms is unknown. Developing a simple social media strategy by identifying your brand, your offering and who you need to connect with will make good use of this time. An online presence takes years to build up, so it’s best to start right now.

3. An extra set of keys. This may seem like a ridiculous ‘investment,’ but who can argue that they’ve never locked themselves out, creating panic and wasting time. Taking simple preventative measures for when life goes wrong, such as always having a spare tire will save you thousands in the long run. A callout to a locksmith can cost upwards of $200. A spare key will set you back $2. You do the math.

4. Self-insurance. Chances are that in your 20s you won’t have mountains of insurable items or be at the stage to consider mortgage cover, but you must protect what

is most valuable. Consider insuring the three technological items (laptop/tablet/phone) that are imperative to your business and find a policy that covers their loss at any location, not just at your home.

Consider wage insurance to cover your bills during periods of unpaid sick leave and unemployment.

5. Retirement plan co-contributions. When you’re in your 20s, scurrying money away for your 60s seems impossible, however, there are several incentives to take advantage of a company-sponsored 401(k) scheme where your co-contributions will be rewarded. Some companies will match your deposits; most will give you at least half. If your company doesn’t offer matches, or you’re self-employed, you must set up your own fund. You won’t have to work forever if you start saving today.

6. Preferred stocks. The idea behind investing in stocks in your 20s is not necessarily to make big money—unless you’ve got the capital to spend big—but familiarize yourself with the process for when you do have the dollars to invest.

It’s argued that preferred stocks are a good way to whet your trading appetite as their dividends are more stable than common stocks. Look for stable large companies such as Coca-Cola and Disney that will allow you to buy and sell your stock without a broker.

7. Crowdfunding. Although the popularity of crowdfunding has hit an all-time high in the last few years, it’s not a new concept. In 1987, investors who put in $1,000 in the Australian film Crocodile Dundee earned a reported 730 percent return. Politicians to artists are using the crowdfunding platform to get their projects off the ground.

he Friends of Inglewood Public Library are in the midst of a Really Big Book Sale. It started Friday, April 18, and will continue through Saturday, May 3 in the lobby and on the patio. The sale will be held during normal business hours: MondayWednesday, 11am-8pm; Thursday and every other Friday, 11am-6pm; and Saturday, 10am-2pm.

The Friends are doing a membership drive during the sale on April 26, May 2 and 3. There are several reasonably priced membership levels to choose from, so there is one for every pocketbook. The new members joining during this drive will receive a great limited edition reusable tote bag.

ayor James Butts and the Inglewood City Council voted unanimously in favor of several items on the consent calendar Tuesday night. With the exception of an amendment increasing costs to run the Summer Food Service Program (which was pulled), the council took the following actions: • Various agreements to retain legal counsel on behalf of the City • Fencing material and installation services for various City-owned properties • A three-year blanket purchase order for printed envelopes for City staff • Termination of an agreement with a contractor for the La Cienega Boulevard Improvement Project and authorization to re-advertise construction bids

The council also approved a resolution to amend the Fiscal Year 20132014 budget to allocate $2,051,644 to fund Locust Street Senior Center development activities. The funds are allocated through a HUD grant.

Bergman, Dacey, Goldsmith will contract with the City to provide legal counsel for the senior center’s design/build project.

Leroy Fisher objects to Madison Square Garden allowing Faithful

Central Bible Church to host Easter services because, in his opinion, it does not serve the entire community. “One church should not be given preference,” he said, questioning whether the service was part of the agreement the Forum made with the City to allow community events to be held there.

“That was not a community event that the people in the City of Inglewood paid for,” said Mayor Butts, who attended the worship service.

“Faithful Central was responsible for cost of that service.”

Stuart Bailey also attended: “It was sponsored by Faithful Central, and it was well attended. From what I saw and heard, it was 18,000 strong. Anytime you can go to church to thank the Lord for what you have is always a good thing.”

comments were made about the City of Inglewood giving Madison Square Garden $18 million to build the Forum. Once again, Mayor Butts tried to put to rest inaccurate statements about the money: “Ms. (Diane) Sombrano, when someone like yourself purports to run a multi-million dollar business, people might think you know what you’re talking about. Redevelopment (Agency) was a vehicle to help cities (initiate projects to boost revenue) so you would have investment capital. Also, you would leverage that investment.”

He addressed Sombrano’s remark that the money, which is a forgivable loan, not being called a “gift.”

don’t understand why there are always a few people intent on creating negativity, no matter how well things are going.

It happens all the time. People naturally gravitate toward success, but not everyone has good intentions. Some want to be a part of success so they can enjoy it, contribute to it and be blessed by it. Others come just looking to exploit it. They have sinister intentions.

I am talking about a few shady characters lurking around in Inglewood, trying to bring the city down. Some have lived here for decades and refuse to leave. Yet, they complain constantly like Inglewood is the most horrible place on Earth. Others have appeared mysteriously, and have revised their past to hide their failures and crime history.

We have seen this many times with various political factions.

They live to criticize, separate, and tear people down. They can’t stand it if things are going right.

They are only happy when people are scared or angry, so they can pit the unsatisfied against each other and build themselves up as some sort of savior. They seek to make money by magnifying problems, or even creating lies.

Inglewood is on the move. It is on a positive upswing. But, now that the city has turned a corner and is succeeding again, outsiders and Inglewood-haters want to jump on the negative bandwagon.

It’s not because Inglewood is so bad, but they see an opportunity to exploit the city for their own gain.

The haters come in all colors, shapes and sizes. There are some, based on our research, that have had drug and alcohol problems, been arrested for public drunkenness and other forms of disorderly conduct. They are shady characters at best, whose agenda is to mar the image and reputation of Inglewood.

As a long time business owner in this city, I have a vested interest in seeing Inglewood succeed. In fact, Inglewood Today was based on a commitment to reporting local news that more accurately reflects the lives of those who live and work here. When we first came on the scene in 1994, it was hard to find positive news about our city. We were seen as a hot-

Willie Brown, Publisher, Inglewood Today Weekly bed for gang activity, poverty and drug abuse. Residents were being unfairly characterized and it was ruining the City’s opportunities to attract investors.

Negative, false and distorted reporting created an image of Inglewood as an undesirable place to live. Yet, those who really know and love the city had a very different experience. What life was really like and what was being reported by traditional media did not match.

As Inglewood continues to grow, and as opportunities continue to open up, it will attract the vultures, looking to make a quick buck off the backs of Inglewood residents.

But I don’t think anything can stop the forward momentum we’ve seen in recent months. No amount of words can erase the successful re-opening of the Forum, billions of dollars of new projects, which are bringing new jobs and increased tax revenues.

Not even the haters can stop the turnaround which is taking place in our school district.

The haters will always be here, but you do not have to entertain them. Just change the channel, and continue enjoying your life in Inglewood. It has not been an easy turnaround, but together, with your commitment, as well as other residents, businesses and City leadership, we will continue to succeed regardless.

If you’re a proud resident of Inglewood, don’t let anyone badmouth your city. You know what real progress looks and feels like.

If you have a concern, contact your local council representative or block club leader. Get the truth and don’t rely on lies, rumors and half-truths being spouted by the haters.

recently attended the gala grand opening of “The Tallest Tree in The Forest,” a one-man play, performed and written by Obie Award Winner, Daniel Beaty, about the complex life of actor, singer and international activist, Paul Robeson.

Paul Robeson won an academic scholarship to Rutgers University.

He played college and professional football, and later earned a law degree from Columbia University Law School.

Robeson was a dynamic figure in American history, but was very rarely mentioned in the history books.

Daniel Beaty channeled the life of Paul Robeson and over forty other characters. When he sang, “Ole Man River,” Paul Robeson’s

signature song, his methodic voice resounded throughout the theater.

He portrayed Paul Robeson’s wife, Dr. Eslanda “Eddie” Cardozo Goode Robeson, so well I thought she was on stage! Eslanda was a very colorful and dynamic personality, and quite controlling of Robeson’s life. She was the first African American chemist to run a lab at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, and was instrumental in establishing his career.

I loved the graphics and films used in the production, which depicted the various historical events taking place during The Robeson’s travels throughout the world.

I have been attending plays at The Mark Taper for over forty years.

Psychiatry and Nursing Departments Collaborate in Major Effort to Identify Patients in Need of Treatment for Depression to Improve Recovery

n an effort to identify and treat patients with undiagnosed depression, Cedars-Sinai nurses are screening each hospitalized patient for signs of the illness and for risk factors that could make recoveries harder and longer.

The new initiative is believed to be one of the broadest depression screenings of patients in a U.S. medical center.

Although many illnesses are associated with some feelings of anxiety, stress and fear, the new screening process is designed specifically to help detect symptoms of clinical depression characterized by a severely disheartened mood, lowered activity level and persistent negative thoughts lasting longer than two weeks.

More than 18 million Americans about—7 percent of the adult population—experience major depression each year.

Society’s stigma against those who have a mental illness often prevents people from seeking treatment when they start feeling depressed, said Itai Danovitch, MD, MBA, chair of the CedarsSinai Department of Psychiatry.

If they develop a physical condition that requires hospitalization, it can cause depression to worsen, affecting the patient’s ability to bounce back from a physical illness. Instituting comprehensive screening will help us recognize underlying mental health issues and offer effective treatments more readily.

Depression affects a large number of patients who enter hospitals and is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic, biological, psychological and environmental factors.

“We know, based on multiple medical studies over several years, that addressing depression improves all aspects of patient health,” said Linda Burnes Bolton, DrPH, RN, vice president for nursing, chief nursing officer and director of Nursing Research.

By routinely screening our patients for depression upon admission, we can ensure that they receive the appropriate treatment and protocol.

nited States Congresswoman Maxine Waters, along with representatives from the American Red Cross and the White House, will announce their new partnership with more than 40 pastors’ wives who are simultaneously opening their doors to FREE medical screenings this Sunday.

The Third Annual Walgreenssponsored First Ladies Health Day will bring together 42 churches and the City of Hawthorne on Sunday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to serve the medically underserved.

Medical experts will offer FREE health exams for high blood pressure, diabetes, breast cancer, Hepatitis C and other diseases that disproportionately plague African Americans. The event will be held at the Hawthorne Memorial Center, located at 3901 West El Segundo in Hawthorne.

First Ladies Reatha Dyson, from Maranantha Community Church, and Nora Garcia from Ministerios Fuente de Agua Viva will represent Inglewood churches. Two Inglewood churches The historic day is being recognized by a special citation from L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas.

L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti commended the participating first ladies, or pastors’ wives, in special communications.

Mayor Chris Brown of Hawthorne joined the program this year along with his wife, Hedako Brown, and is offering the use of his city’s public center to provide free medical tests on the health day. The center represents the initiatives’ first secular venue.

An estimated 20,000 participants are expected to seek the free screenings during the Walgreenssponsored health day. Targeted illnesses include blood pressure, diabetes, breast cancer, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, Alzheimer’s and other diseases that particularly plague African Americans and Latinos.

This year’s theme for the health day is “Take Time, to Take Care.”

Dr. Betty Price, the former first lady of Crenshaw Christian Center of Los Angeles, returns this year as the chairwoman for the program.

She says the health initiative has made a difference in the lives of some of her church members.

“Many of our members rely on the First Ladies Health Day for their yearly exams,” stated Price. “We are more than happy to welcome Walgreens back to our church as the primary sponsor of this significant labor of love.”

tarting a business that is deemed to be environmentally friendly is a big call for people nowadays and one that receives a lot of attention, both in terms of support by state and government authorities as well as by consumers. A so-called green business may literally be a business that services, makes products for or helps the environment.

One of the most important things to do is to discover your niche, and find out what appeals to you, and then develop a business or product that fits into that niche. Once the initial enthusiasm for setting up and running your own business has died down a little, then what needs to kick in is your enthusiasm or excitement about the product itself. This will only really happen if you have decided upon a niche that is really relevant to you and which really excites you. It is worth spending time on this side of the business development at the outset and use the idea of what excites you as a motivator rather than what you think is going to be the most profitable area of business to go into.

One of the most important things about being an eco-friendly or green business is to have lots of certificates from people saying you are green friendly or eco-friendly.

Luckily there are a number of bodies in every country and internationally that are happy to certify you, assuming you meet their requirements. The importance of this is you need to know what their re-

quirements are before you develop the business so that you can adjust the way the business is run accordingly, in order to make sure it meets their requirements and you get certified.

Categories of certification cover the following ground. Products can easily be certified and the most obvious example of these are products certified as organic. There are a number of bodies that constitute organic certification, and choosing which one is most appropriate to you will determine how your product is sourced and marketed.

Buildings are often certified as being green or not and this will, to an extent, be determined not only by how they are built, but how they are run in terms of fuel efficiency i.e. solar panels, electricity, carbon emission, etc.

There are numerous scientific certification systems for agricultural manufacturing and electric businesses. Research what these are and whether they might be appropriate to the product or service you’re developing. There are a number of energy-efficient products that are certified in the United States by

the Energy Star Program. This is a certification program that is widely looked to by consumers as being a factor in determining what product they buy. Knowing what the requirements are for this program will allow you to decide if your product is appropriate or not, and if so, how to apply for such certification.

There are a number of international certifications that can also be extremely valuable to have. Even if at the outset of your business you are not considering selling overseas, there is a high chance that in the future you will want to. Knowing what the certification programs involve and whether your product fits into them will give you an opportunity to adjust your product accordingly to make sure it does.

This is important both in terms of overseas exports in the future, and also shows domestic customers that you have a broader range of certifications available. This should have a healthy impact on sales or use of the product domestically as well as internationally in the future.

Improved Prevention Is a Group Effort, Says Former Doctor and Personality Disorder Sufferer

About 2 million employees are affected by workplace violence every year, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

“This is not simply a case of the 24-hour news cycle maintaining a captive audience with fear mongering,” says retired physician Mohinder Goomar. “In addition to the reported cases of workplace violence, who knows how many go unreported? A prevalent common denominator is untreated mental illness,” says Goomar, author of “It’s Just My Opinion,” (http:// tinyurl.com/koshnfd), which discusses his experience with dissociative identity disorder (DID), formerly known as multiple personality disorder.

“Because diagnosis and treatment of mental illness hasn’t progressed much in recent decades, we need to encourage lay people to be vigilant toward those expressing tendencies that indicate the potential for violence due to mental illness.”

Goomar, who has personally suffered the destabilizing affects of dissociative identity disorder (DID), reviews indicators of mental illness, which may lead to violence.

• Marginalized or bullied students/coworkers. Students inter­ viewed at the Murrysville, Pa., high school, where 16-year-old Alex Hribal is accused of stabbing 21 people, have said Hribal is a shy person without violent tendencies.

The FBI, however, has found evidence that he was bullied online.

Human beings are social creatures who almost always require companionship for mental well-being, especially for the development of a juvenile. Be sensitive to those who are socially challenged; pressure from bullying can have catastrophic consequences.

• A consistent and emphatic victimization position. After pulling out a pistol and yelling what can be translated in English as “God is great!” Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan pulled out a pistol and killed 13 unarmed people in Fort Hood.

Later in court, when Hasan was representing himself, he justified his actions by saying he was defending a group of Taliban leaders in Afghanistan, including a man named Mullah Omar. Those who perpetrate terrible violence often do so citing justice from a victimized position.

• Readily apparent indicators of paranoia and a history of violent reactions. Aaron Alexis, the former Navy man who was discharged from the service for a violent altercation, was nonetheless allowed to work in the Washington Navy Yard as a contractor. He eventually shot and killed 12 people, and critically injured three. The FBI later said that he was under “the delusional belief that he was being controlled or influenced by extremely low frequency electromagnetic waves,” or ELF. These are clear red flags of mental illness that were ignored.

• An aggressively litigious nature. The Guinness Book of World Records named Jonathan Lee Richards the most litigious man, having had court filings against Martha Stewart and New England Patriots football coach Bill Beli­chick, among many others. Having heard of his new title, he filed a suit against the record-holding institution. Richards also is a former federal prisoner.

Outrageous legal action is another form of confrontation from those who constantly perceive grievances.

Mohinder Goomar is a former medical doctor who, after emigrating from India, became board certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology and became an American citizen. He was chairman of the surgery department at Saratoga Hospital, in New York, had a private practice for head and neck surgery. After experiencing mood swings and a distortion of judgment, Goomar was diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder (DID). He was rehabilitated at a facility and lost his medical license for two years—to be followed by reinstatement of the license. Due to his DID experience, he did not have his license reinstated. The money came from the California Redevelopment Agency to help stimulate economic growth in Inglewood. Had the city not used the $18 million, the funds would have been lost. The CRA no longer exists.

Raising the Minimum Wage to $10.10 Would Help Workers of Color

he Center for American Progress recently released a new infographic detailing the positive effect that raising the minimum wage from $7.25 per hour to $10.10 per hour would have on workers of color. Raising the minimum wage is an important step to ensure that the economy works for everyone, reduce the earnings gap, and help lift people out of poverty. It will provide all Americans who work hard with the

opportunity to get ahead while giving the economy a needed boost.

Workers of color would benefit greatly from raising the minimum wage. Nationally, more than 12 million black, Asian, and Hispanic workers would see their wages rise by $16.1 billion: • Asian workers would see a boost of $2.4 billion.

• Black workers would collectively gain $5.3 billion.

• Hispanic workers would

add a total of $8.5 billion to their wages.

A significant number of people of color would be lifted out of poverty if the minimum wage were raised to $10.10. A minimumwage increase would also reduce government spending because fewer people would rely on programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, saving $46 million over 10 years.

The national wage data are calculated based on

Economic Policy Institute estimates for the 2013 effect of raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 per hour. The data examine the effect for all workers, not just workers making exactly $7.25. If the minimum wage were raised to $10.10, many workers making above the minimum wage would also see wage increases.

Chevron Awards South Bay Workforce Investment Board $50,000 Bridge to STEM Manufacturing Careers Program

he South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB) was awarded $50,000 from Chevron to develop a curriculum and training for SBWIB’s Bridge to Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Manufacturing Careers. City Treasurer Wanda Brown informed the public about general economic trends. The Federal Reserve Bank will not buy as many bonds this year as projected. There has also been a big drop in U.S. imports in recent years. Starting in 2018, automobiles will come equipped with cameras. She also addressed a comment made last week regarding Inglewood’s housing market.

After reporting that some homes in Inglewood are selling for upwards of $400,000, a woman commented that homes in more affluent areas are selling for much more.

“I wasn’t comparing Inglewood to other cities,” Brown said. “Naturally, anything in Beverly H ills is going to sell over a million dollars.

I was comparing apples to apples, not apples to grapefruits.”

Michael Benbow asked that the meeting be closed in honor of Dr. James Hall, who ran a women’s clinic in Inglewood for several years. The meeting was also closed the names of Inglewood students Denise Gonzales and Ismael Jimenez, who died in a tragic bus crash two weeks ago. Padilla thanked the community for supporting the car wash, which raised money for funeral costs.
