Annual Earth Day Festival: Fun with a Purpose

O

n April 16, the City of Inglewood partnered with the Social Justice Learning Institute (SJLI) and Consolidated Disposal Service (CDS) to host the 6th annual Earth Day Festival. The festival was sponsored by West Basin Municipal Water District. Consolidated Disposal Services and Inglewood Today were supporters of the event.

It was a fun-filled day, which brought the community together with a variety of speakers, food and information vendors, demonstrations, live entertainment, and interactive activities for the entire family.

Demonstrations focused on environmental sustainability, water conservation, and healthy living.

he baseball diamond that’s laid vacant for quite some time now over at Rogers Park, inherited a well-deserved makeover this past weekend. Club 42, under the leadership of John Branca (co-executor of The Michael Jackson Estate, and nephew of Ralph Branca, the last living member of the historic 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers during Jackie Robinson’s rookie season in major league baseball), celebrated the life and legacy of Hall of Fame Major League Baseball icon, Jackie Robinson on the annual Jackie Robin(Continued on page 2)

Spotlight: Brett Roberts

B

rett Roberts is an amazing man with an awesome life.

His background includes deep roots within the Inglewood community. Roberts has traveled to 25 countries and yet still finds time to make contributions in Inglewood through his career working in community relations on a major transportation project.

His childhood was marked with support and hope for a brighter day from his mother and grandparents.

“I grew up an only child to a single mother with my grandparents playing a key role in my life. They made sure we did road trips, went to museums and other fun things,” Roberts said.

Roberts enjoyed his formal school years and has kept many of the same acquaintances since that time.

“My elementary and high school years were fun, in fact I still have many friends from elementary school,” he said. “High school was a period of time that I was finding myself. I was on the track team, which was fun. Also, I got into a little trouble as a student, however by the grace of God and a supportive mom I was able to turn it around.”

When asked about his teenage years, Roberts was forthcoming about the challenges he faced.

Roberts said, “I attended Pepperdine University for my undergrad degree and went to graduate school there, too. I’ve also completed an executive education program through the Harvard Kennedy School of Gov.” Roberts is an enviable traveler.

Seemingly, every week he flies some place special. Many people would be honored to have a passport stamped like his.

Bringing high quality baseball back to the City of Inglewood is something that Coach Lareece Barksdale and youth mentors at the Inglewood City Elite baseball program have done. “We’re providing kids in the community with opportunities that they otherwise may not have, as far as academic prep and high quality baseball,” Coach Barksdale added.

“What we’re doing is bringing together communities. Most of the folks coming from Thousand Oaks and Beverly Hills are joining that team, and playing with the kids from Inglewood, which is a reflection of what Jackie Robinson stood for. That’s the spirit of the day, the spirit of the game, and the spirit of the teams who are here,” Councilman Eloy Morales said.

The Amazing Kobe Bryant: What Will He Do Next?

obe Bean Bryant is an American retired professional basketball player.”

So reads the first line of Wikipedia. Being retired hasn’t sunk in yet for basketball fans, and I’m sure, not for Kobe. For now, it feels more like having witnessed him shoot the final tie-breaking shot in Game 7 of the National NBA Championship Game.

Bryant went out like a hero in his farewell game, played for a team that he stayed with during his entire 20-year career. Kobe’s amazing “60 points by himself” finale Lakers never traded him. made it clear why the Los Angeles Now that he won’t be returning to another training camp, questions are circulating about his future. What exactly does Kobe Bryant plan to do? At age 37, the mega-rich superstar has plenty of options. But he probably won’t go the way of his mentor and former Lakers superstar Magic Johnson.

“We don’t have the same personality,” Bryant said

jokingly about Johnson. “I can’t go around talking and smiling at people all day.”

He also said he has no interest in being a coach or a general manager.

So, as far as high-profile sports careers go, that leaves sports announcing—a path successfully undertaken by former NBA players like Bill Walton, Reggie Miller, and Charles Barkley.

“He’s obviously smart and articulate and he would be a great candidate,” Craig Barry, Turner Sports senior vice president and executive

Meanwhile, Bryant has been quietly investing his millions for postcareer life. He established Kobe Inc. last year, a sports-related venture that invested in Body Armor, an athletic beverage. He was an early investor in the Players Tribune, a website in which athletes write first-person narratives.

“If I’m involved in basketball, from a league perspective, it would be from an ownership perspective if at all,” he said. “I’m not [feeling] any of that daily stuff. That’s not happening.”

Police Investigation a Priority for Members of Local Parish

P

ublic comments during Tuesday’s meeting of the Inglewood City Council focused again on two officer-involved shootings which occurred on Feb. 21.

It began on a positive note, however, with commendations being given to Crystal Wells and Lee Denmon.

Wells, who was not present, was recognized for outstanding community service. Denmon serves on the Inglewood Police Oversight Commission in District 1. He was recommended by the Office of Sen. Isadore Hall (37th District).

Mayor James Butts noted Denmon’s “extraordinary service to the 37th District,” and his “numerous contributions to Inglewood’s Police Oversight Commission.” He was called a role model.

A woman from the parish, who said she spoke with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept., wanted to know if the officers involved are still on active duty.

“No, they are not,” Butts replied.

“You’re sharing that with me now, but it would be really good to share that with the community,” she said.

Another member wants police oversight commissioners present at council meetings to inform people about police matters involving private citizens.

Two weeks ago, a member of Black Lives Matter raised the same issue during the council meeting.

Again, Mayor Butts responded: “It’s been frustrating. People feel we should know right now what happened. The chief has questions.

I have questions and the council has questions, but they (officers) are entitled to due process.

He added that authorities are processing evidence which will take months to complete, and “there are dozens of people to be interviewed.”

The oversight commission does not have the authority to delve into an active investigation, Butts said.

State of Inglewood Is Good

O

n April 21, Mayor James Butts will give his annual State of the City Address at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood.

It will be an upbeat account of the city’s progress, from economic development, record low crime rates, infrastructure improvements and upward home values.

Basically, the city is on a roll that shows no signs of slowing down.

As I write this letter, my primary objective is to speak to those unfamiliar with the city, who are just becoming aware of the “new” Inglewood. Over the years, the media has, no doubt, been influential in painting a picture much darker than it is today.

As Inglewood’s “official” newspaper, in business since 1994, and a long standing stakeholder, I feel a strong responsibility to provide my perspective. Where some news outlets in the past have focused primarily on negative elements, and even credited Inglewood with crimes committed in Los Angeles, it is only fair that newcomers be given a balanced view. As one on the outside looking in, you may not know the city’s background and what it took to bring us here.

Today, Inglewood is experiencing a turnaround that is unprecedented for most cities. It is shedding its label as a “sleeper city” to one which will soon host the Los Angeles

Along with the changing infrastructure is the collective change in attitude. At times, the hope and enthusiasm in this city is literally palpable. You can feel it when you attend community events like the annual tree lighting, turkey giveaway and the recent Earth Day festival.

All the changes are culminating into a changed perspective—pride in our hometown, overwhelming support of our leadership and reclaiming the moniker, “City of Champions.”

Clinton, Trump Take New York

here were no real surprises in Tuesday’s presidential primary in New York. As predicted, Hillary Clinton won the Democratic primary and Donald Trump came out way ahead among Republicans.

Clinton won 58 percent of the vote over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 42 percent. The former New York senator actually did better in her home state than predicted, ending the contest with a 16 point lead. Polls had her at 10 percent.

Trump took a commanding lead over his rivals with 61 percent of the vote, followed by Ohio Gov. John Kasich with 25 percent, and 12 percent went to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, according to NBC News.

Ted Cruz, whose disparaging remarks about “New York values,” caused backlash among voters put him in last place with 0 delegates.

John Kasich, who is too far behind mathematically to win the Republican nomination, came in second with 4 delegates. Trump’s total for New York is 89.

and 106 New York delegates respectively.

So far Trump has 844 of the total 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the Republican nomination. Cruz has 559 and Kasich has 146. Clinton now has 1,885 and Sanders has 1,190 of the required 2,383, NBC News said.

Clinton’s wide margin over Brooklyn-born Sanders has her focused on winning the general election. “The race for the Democratic nomination is in the home stretch and victory is in sight,” she told a crowd on Tuesday.

Trump delivered a confident victory speech, celebrating his success and discounting his rivals’ chances.

“We’re going to end at a very high level and get a lot more delegates than anybody projected, even in their wildest imagination,” he said during his victory speech to enthusiastic chants of “U.S.A.” The next round of primaries will take place April 26 in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

City of Champions – The Saga Continues

I

nglewood’s accolade of “City of Champions” started with the 1932 Olympics when 3 Inglewood High graduates medaled in their three respective events. 1938 brought Hollywood Park Race Track and thoroughbred champions, from Seabiscuit to Zenyatta, showed their stuff. Jack Kent Cooke built the Forum in 1967 which, until 1999, the Lakers and Kings called home.

Also in our pantheon of champions are the minor league professional football team, the BlackHawks, three time national champions and the newest, the Los Angeles Rams.

With the Rams returning to LA, their dance team is getting a makeover. Workshops were held to show those interested in auditioning what the Rams expect. The auditions were held April 2 at USC’s Galen Center, and 450 applicants turned out. From that, 50 finalists were chosen and 35 of these became members of the Rams dance team at the final competition held at the Forum last Sunday.

The LadyHawks (dance team for all BlackHawks home games) has been a training ground for those wishing to hone their skills. The program

Anne Cheek La Rose is designed to enhance skills while putting participants in the same type of environment experienced by NFL and NBA dance groups and assisting the participants to move to the next level. The team uses the same choreography source that many of the west coast NBA and NFL teams use.

The LadyHawks are under the guidance of Inglewood resident D’nez Westmoreland.

He has a 30-year history with cheerleading and dance teams, starting as a head cheerleader of the California State University Sacramento stunt team.

D’nez has worked with the United Spirit Association, teaching skills and judging competitions around the country. Additionally, he has choreographed and coached several high school, all-star, and collegiate teams including the collegiate competition cheer programs at the University of Southern California. After creating two Southern California teams for the American Basketball Association, he moved to the LadyHawks. After eight years with the team, several former squad members can be seen on pro teams including the LakerGirls, San Diego Charger Cheerleaders, and Chivas USA Cheerleaders. Several are professional instructors working for Los Angeles area dance studios or as cheerleader/dance instructors for camp organizations, and another leads the dance program at Lynwood High School.

Once again, a member of the LadyHawks has gone for the gold. She is 5 year veteran and team captain, Britney Warren. Sadly, Britney did not make the cut. All those chosen had been part of other NFL or NBA dance teams. However, this vibrant

young lady will continue to captain the LadyHawks team for 2016 and will be part of the selection committee for the LadyHawks auditions next month while awaiting her next big league opportunity.

The LadyHawks Dance Team will hold one-day auditions on Sunday, May 1, to recruit new talent for the upcoming 2016 season. The goal is to increase the size of the team and several spots are available. Reasons Short Sales Fail (Part 2 of 2)

Keeping It REAL Estate Why a HECM Might Be Right for You (Part 4 of 4)

or the past three weeks, I have been reviewing the different loans that are out there, and what might work best for you. There is the conventional loan, FHA loan, VA loan, and the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM).

Of these four loans, the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) is not used to purchase a home. It is generally more of a home equity loan for older homeowners. It does not require monthly payments and instead lets the borrower convert a portion of the equity in their home into cash. Equity may be paid out monthly for a fixed period, as a lump sum, or as a line of credit.

Just know you must be over 62 years of age and there has to be enough equity in the home to tap.

To qualify for a reverse mortgage, you should have at least 40% equity available in your home. If there’s an existing mortgage, you also must have enough equity to pay off the remaining mortgage.

The Center for Retirement Research believes a reverse mortgage makes sense for people who don’t plan to move, can afford the cost of maintaining their home and want to access the equity in their home to supplement their income or have money available for a rainy day. Some people even use a reverse mortgage to eliminate their existing mortgage and improve their monthly cash flow.

However, before you apply there are a few things you must consider.

They can be a little more expensive than other mortgage products and may affect eligibility for Medicaid and Supplemental Social Security Income benefits.

The (HECM) is there for people who may want to live a higher standard of life while settling into retirement. I often advise those who may have higher life insurance coverage to only borrow up to the amount their life insurance can cover, allowing the

mortgage to be repaid after their passing so that their home may be passed along to children, loved ones or even left to the charity of their choice.

If this is a choice you would consider, it’s generally better to discuss this mortgage with your children so they may know what they will be dealing with at your passing, This will allow them to pay off the re-

To recap, the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage is a tool to be used for those over the age of 62 who have a large amount of equity in their home and would like to use some of that equity. The money you take out during your life must be paid off at death through either insurance or your family repaying the loan. Like any other loan, it is not for everyone and you should consult with a professional before applying.

Registered Nurses have Reached Tentative Agreements with Prime Healthcare

egistered nurses have reached tentative agreements with Prime Healthcare on new collective bargaining contracts covering 1,500 RNs at three hospitals in Inglewood and San Diego, CA and Reno, NV that include new health and safety protections and substantial pay increases for the nurses.

Centinela Hospital in Inglewood, CA, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Reno, each with 600 RNs, and Alvarado Hospital in San Diego, with 300 RNs are covered by the agreements. The pacts must still be ratified by nurses who were expected to vote at membership meetings on April 18 at Centinela, April 20 at Alvarado, and April 21 at St. Mary’s.

The nurses are members of National Nurses United affiliates, the California Nurses Association and National Nurses Organizing Committee-Nevada.

Highlights of the agreements include several critical health and safety provisions to protect nurses and patients. Those include language to strengthen protocols for prevention of workplace violence incidents, procedures to reduce unsafe patient handling, primarily in

the lifting of patients, that causes workplace injuries, patient falls and accidents, and measures to reduce patient and worker exposure to infectious diseases, such as Ebola or other epidemics.

retain experienced RNs at the facilities and recruit new nurses.

In Reno, the RNs were also successful in protecting contract requirements for safe nurse staffing, through minimum nurse to patient staff ratios, which California hospitals are required to maintain as a result of a CNA-sponsored law.

“Nurses at Saints stood together like never before to defend our ratios,” said Darrella McGuire, a Labor and Delivery RN at Saint Mary’s in Reno in a press release. “I’m proud to be able to say that we reached an agreement that benefits not just nurses and our families, but our patients and our entire community.”

“In the ER we know the first step in a trauma is to stabilize the patient and stop the bleeding, and that’s an excellent metaphor for what we’ve accomplished here,” said Jess Farnsworth, an ER nurse at Alvarado Hospital in a press release. “I’m inspired by the way nurses came together, both long-term nurses and brand new graduates, to advocate for a contract that rewards those who’ve stayed while laying the foundation for a new generation to serve this community.”

Regarding overall safety, the rate of homicides in Inglewood is at its lowest level since the department began recording statistics.

Donald Stratton, who lives in District 2, complained that the City’s website is slow and information is outdated. “It gives out erroneous information. You read about a meeting and you go there and it’s not there. Nothing is coming back in logical order,” he said.

During closing comments, Councilman George Dotson praised the City’s Public Works Dept. for organizing Inglewood’s 6th Annual Earth Day Celebration, featuring 70’s band Rose Royce. “This was the largest one so far. Rose Royce was off the chain, so if you missed that, you missed a great one,” he said.

Councilman Alex Padilla reminded the public of Mayor Butts’ upcoming State of the City Address, April 21 at the Fabulous Forum. He also praised Angela Williams and her staff in Public Works for their

efforts toward the Earth Day event.

“Rose Royce nailed it, everyone had a great time,” Padilla said.

Councilman Ralph Franklin gave a shout out to WLM Financial for their efforts to educate the community about investing in their homes and how to use home equity. He also mentioned the South Bay Service Center as a resource for helping consumers with low-interest loans.

Councilman Eloy Morales thanked Parks, Recreation and Library Services Director Sabrina Barnes for her help in getting the baseball field ready at Rogers Park for Jackie Robinson Weekend.

Weighing in on comments about the officer-involved shooting, he said the community needs to “believe in your police department and believe in your leadership.”

“No matter how great a job people do, bad things are going to happen,” Butts said referring to the investigation. “The barometer is how you address them. This is an open and active investigation.

Until all questions are satisfied, it won’t be done.”

Roberts is a fan of the success of the Forum and says he loves driving by there, seeing the parking lot full of cars and event goers.

“With the new stadium developments, Inglewood will become a destination spot for people from across the country. Inglewood’s economy is strong as ever and even strengthening,” Roberts said in an interview.

When it comes to the secret sauce to his success, Roberts admits it takes hard work, perseverance, no fear of failure and tenacity.

“Life is all about the dash. It’s about what we do and the mark we leave during the period between sunrise and sunset,” Roberts said.

Harriet Tubman to Be the New Face of the $20 Bill

urrently, Ms. Gloria Gray is on the West Basin Water District Board of Directors. She is the first African American woman elected to that position in 68 years.

This week, I spoke with her about the basics of the West Basin Water District, which happens to provide water to over one million residents in the area.

Q: How are you currently involved with Gloria D. Gray the City of Inglewood?

Gray: Well, I’ve lived here for a number of years and have served in a lot of organizations. I’m really involved in water; I was elected to the water board in 2014. The board has 5 elected members and I was elected to represent the City of Inglewood.

There was some discussion about replacing the first-ever treasury secretary, Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill. However, that decision generated a backlash from many people who said that he should be kept on the front of our currency. This sentiment is likely influenced by the hit Broadway musical currently running, which is named after him.

Tubman is the perfect choice as the first American woman to go on the $20 bill, as she’s an icon who worked tirelessly to both end slavery and promote women’s suffrage. However, it is going to take another 14 years before a Harriet Tubman $20 bill becomes a reality.

The new bills will begin circulating in 2030.

It is not clear why there is such a long delay.

interactive recycling robot. Mrfphee was quite a hit with the children and those young at heart.

Rose Royce mesmerized the crowd, performing a plethora of hits like “Car Wash,” “I Wanna Get Next to You,” and “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore.” Past Earth Day headliners include Lenny Williams and Kenny Lattimore.

West Basin Municipal Water District provided interactive exhibits and information on its Water Reliability 2020 program. The agency, which manages local water distribution is on target to reduce dependency on imported water sources from 66 percent to 33 percent by 2020. It has been an effective resource for educating Southern Californians about the state’s drought crisis and steps consumers can take to reverse the trend.
