The South LA Clinic Delivers President’s Second COVID-19 Vaccination Covid Relief Package By Dr. John E. Warren Publisher, The San Diego Voice & Viewpoint

President Biden has announced bold goals for the much needed Covid relief package that America so desperately needs. But sometimes good intentions can fall upon bad roadblocks. In this case, it’s the President’s desire to try and work with the Republicans who have demonstrated that they have no real concern about the pain and suffering of Americans outside of their own interest as a political party. The U.S. House of Representatives has enough votes to pass the 1.9 trillion dollar relief package and as of February 2nd has begun the process of moving the legislation toward enactment. In the U.S. Senate, we encourage the Democratic leadership and majority to treat the Republicans as they have treated America for the past four years. That is, vote according to having the numbers with no concern for the other side. The Democrats have the numbers for a “simple majority” to pass the relief package with Vice President Harris standing by as the tie breaker if one occurs. The Republican package, presented to the President this week in their meeting with him at the White House, should be considered “dead on arrival” and viewed as no more than another effort to delay getting relief to the American people. There is still time to talk about unity after we get relief to the American people. Mr. President, U.S. House of Representatives and the United States Senate, let’s get this legislation passed and on the President’s desk with all deliberate speed. The Republicans can catch up later, if they are still interested in democracy, their oath of office and the constitution they swore to serve.

& Lakers Why Inglewood and the Nation Celebrates Black History Month in February

The South LA Clinic, So Cal Club, Community of Support medical facility at 2700 W. Manchester Boulevard in Inglewood featured hundreds of individuals on Thursday last week lined up for nearly the entire block as they waited to receive the second COVID-19 vaccination shot.

The community medical facility that has established a reputation of providing a broad range of medical and mental health services to, primarily, the LGBT community, was selected by the County of Los Angeles to administer the second dose. William, the spokesperson who refused to provide his last name, was not able to provide the actual number of vaccines that his clinic was prepared to administer but indicated that individuals were selected by appointment only, suggesting that the county was able to schedule the doses to coincide with the availability of the second vaccine. Jeffrey, the man at the front of the block long line indicated that he had been waiting for about an hour before advancing to the front. “The line is moving fairly rapidly,” he indicated, “to get the second dose, I am prepared to wait as long as necessary.”

This month, as the nation does every year, we celebrate Black History Month, our way of showing respect and recognition for the hard work of and sacrifices made by African Americans. In spite of a painful and unjust American history that saw Black people bought and sold into slavery and ongoing challenges that continue to this day, Blacks have remained strong and we have made countless contributions that range from innovations in science and medicine to technology and education. And, with the election of President Barack Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris, we are still completing seemingly extraordinary and impressive firsts. Continued on page 2

Scott says. “During the civil rights movement in the South, the Freedom Schools incorporated Black history into the curriculum to advance social

attending a celebration in Illinois for the 50th anniversary of the 13th Amendment, which under Abraham Lincoln’s presidency, abolished slavery in 1863 in the Confederate states that seceded from the U.S.: Mississippi, Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. It wasn’t until two years later on June 19, 1865, which is when Juneteenth is celebrated, that all people held as property in the United States were officially free. The festivities honoring the proclamation lasted for three weeks, with various exhibits depicting events in African American culture. In 1915, after seeing this display, Woodson decided to form what is now named the Association for the Study of AfroAmerican Life and History (ASALH), in order to encourage the study of the accomplishments made by Black Americans. After Woodson wrote The Journal of Negro History in 1916, which chronicled the overlooked achievements of African Americans, he sought to amplify Black people’s success and spread his findings to a wider audience. Through community outreach, he encouraged his fraternity Omega Psi Phi to promote his work. In 1924, the fraternity responded by creating “Negro Achievement Week,” and February was selected to align

change. The Negro History movement was an intellectual insurgency that was part of every larger effort to transform race relations.” Consequentially, the ASALH expanded the recognition to Black History Month. To solidify this change, in 1976, President Gerald Ford declared February “Black History Month” in a commemorative speech. He urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” In the years following Ford’s speech, congress passed a law in 1986 that deemed February “National Black (Afro-American) History Month.” Both Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton issued their own proclamations recognizing it as a national observance, and every POTUS has issued one annually since 1996. But as time goes on, just like Woodson’s idea of highlighting people of color went from a single organization to an entire month of recognition, before his death in 1950, Woodson himself wished to see the acknowledgment of African Americans’ past become a regular daily occurrence rather than be relegated to a single month.

Phi’s efforts, Woodson still wanted to make a bigger impact. So in 1926, he and the ASALH officially declared the second week of February to be “Negro History Week,” announcing the news through a press release. Both Lincoln and Douglass had long been celebrated by the Black community in the years before “Negro History Week” was created. Since his assassination, Lincoln’s birthday was honored by both African Americans and Republicans alike, so the ASALH only solidified this tradition. And Douglass was already revered as a change-making abolitionist and orator whose legacy would now be cemented with festivities that honored the people he fought so hard for. In the 50 years that followed clubs, schools, and communities across the country began taking part in the week-long celebration. Slowly, more and more U.S. cities declared official recognition of “Negro History Week.” Particularly in the 1960s, during the civil rights movement, with wider public knowledge of the trials and triumphs of African Americans, a mere seven days turned into a month-long recognition. “In the 1940s, efforts began slowly within the Black community to expand the study of Black history in the schools. In the South, Black teachers often taught Negro History as a supplement to United States history,”

IRS Identity Theft Program NOW OPEN! New one-time use PIN option available for all

IT News Wire

Tip Category: What’s New The IRS is expanding a pilot program that uses Identity Protection Personal Information Numbers (IP PINs) to provide an extra layer of security for all taxpayers. Here is what you need to know. IP PIN program details The IRS’s IP PIN program is an additional layer of security to ensure your tax identity and withholdings are not stolen. When you register in the program, the IRS will mail you a sixdigit numeric IP PIN. You must enter this number on your tax return or the return will be rejected. It is a one-time

use IP PIN. In other words, you will receive a new number every year. So why get an IP PIN? The IRS uses the IP PIN to better verify your identity. It can prevent clever hackers from using your Social Security number to file fraudulent returns or access returns you’ve already filed. Keep in mind that if you choose to get an IP PIN, you’ll need to use an IP PIN for all future filings. While the IRS is planning to add the ability to opt out of the program, it is not yet available. So once you are in the program, you must stay in it. If need be, you can still paper file your tax return if you lose

your IP PIN. Getting your IP PIN You can use special IRS tools to obtain an IP PIN and verify your identity through a two-factor authentication process. Go to the Get an IP PIN page on the IRS website to get started. To get the IP PIN, you will be asked to register for an online account with the IRS. The process to open the account requires an independent ID verification prior to establishing the account. Once approved, you can then register for the program. Final thoughts Remember, a new IP PIN is generated

for every filing season. It may be retrieved mid-January by logging into your account. If you have experienced ID theft, the IRS automatically puts you into this program. So the IRS will continue to issue new IP PINs to taxpayers who have already been victimized by taxrelated identity theft. Remember, if you are in the program, you must protect this number. Do not tell it to anyone other than those who need the information to file a tax return. Also know that the IRS will never ask you for this number, so do not give it out.

Sports & Entertainment Black History Month and Super Bowl Weekend: A Traumatic Experience Made Me a Political Poet

By Cymone Davis, Exclusive to Inglewood Today

My name is Cymone and I’m one of the amazing Davis children. My twin brothers, Carlos and Khalil, play for the NFL teams Steelers and Buccaneers, respectively. My sister, Monique, was recognized as Employee of the Year for her role with the U.S. Department of Justice. And then, there’s me. The middle child of this successful bunch; with two Master’s Degrees, I’m currently the City Manager of Tullahassee, OK and School Founder of Kingdom Come International. Neither of my parents received a Bachelor’s Degree, but have remained married for 30+ years. They instilled love and pushed their four children towards their dreams. My family is a testament that dreams do come true. We’re currently in Tampa, FL and just celebrated my brother winning a Super Bowl ring his rookie year. And yet ... We’re Black in America. Amongst all success, our skin still proves to be a barrier. My family is an anomaly, even for most Americans. But, we’re Black. It’s been much blood, sweat, and tears to get where we are. And Black trauma. A few days after celebrating my brother going to the Super Bowl against our hometown Chiefs, I experienced trauma that forced me to write. I felt my voice wasn’t being heard. I felt my skin still proved to be a barrier for people to listen. On Tuesday, January 26th, around 8:30 p.m. at my apartment in downtown Tulsa, OK, the high of the Buccaneers win came crashing to a terrifying low when someone started to bang on my door. It was loud, aggressive, and scary. I snuck to the door and outside was a white man dressed in all-black, with wire-framed glasses, and a black skull cap. Apparently, this man was upset and I didn’t know why. He was banging, but he never spoke. I didn’t either, I was too shook. I thought of my family. I thought of my life. I thought of Breanna Taylor. I later discovered it was apartment security who was banging on my door. Feeling like my concerns weren’t being heard by the apartment complex and the security company, I was forced to pick up a pen. In a matter of days, I wrote a collection of poems that speaks to black pain and trauma, but also of cultural heritage and victory. In honor of Black History Month and Breonna Taylor, I present two poems from the literary work of “Bang the Door, Beast Unleashed: A collection of poems when trauma hits home.”

1. Capitol Ode. We live in a country where cops can’t even keep Capitol Hill safe. Do I feel secure in this security? Hell no. Hello? Do you hear me... We live in a country where cops can’t even keep Capitol Hill safe. The ships that created slavery manifested this shit. The mountains that produced Caucasus aided and abetted this shame. Let’s be clear You are to blame. Your very own enemy. When did you ever speak? Your friends and family marched that fateful day. I’m just stuck in this game as you play these Capitol charades. What’s the carnage and survival rate? Wait... they all made it out safe? Wow, America is in a valley now. I guess we all in the belly below. But yet I look to the hills which cometh my help. To pull me out

from under this mess. An ode to my Ancestors You are very the best. 2. Liberal friends. This is for you and all your little liberal friends... White flight is bright When Black lives are blight They scream Black matters, Black pride! Meanwhile, they hide behind

as their hides is on the sidelines. When you gonna get in the game and actually play some D? The score is in motion and all I see is you being social... Media shows both sides. Like its 2-faced, Too fake. The shots on the gram, the protests going ham... You eat it like its cake. You soak it like a sponge. You click your camera and scroll your screen. When are you actually gonna SEE ME and not scream? Manifest the black dream. Join the fight and not just for a scene. You strive for a photo op, Pray for Nobel Peace Not peace in streets. You show up late to the party With pastries and happiness. Your highness is rooted in my reality Your silence is loud in the room You CHOOSE when to be moved. Your foot barely hit the pavement When I AM the movement. You can escape when I can’t. Because white flight is bright when Black lives are blight.

Cymone’s current journey is building Kingdom Come International, an black boarding school in the oldest, historic all-black town in Oklahoma.

BUPPIE | BUSINESS AFR Praises Leadership of Rep. Maxine Waters at Helm of Financial Services Panel

Let Our Children Go By Michelle Lyons, Columnist

In the United States of America, we have grown accustomed to separating children from their parents. Last year we spent millions of dollars advertising and campaigning to unite children at the border with their parents, but did you know that child custody cases have become more about money than a child’s wellbeing? Millions of children are separated from their parents right here in the USA. Too often the person who can afford the fancy attorneys gets sole custody of the children when the best interest of a child should always be joint custody, but too many parents are not thinking about the children’s wellbeing instead they are focused on a paycheck. Did you know that Children Services known as DCFS is literally placing kids in foster care that would do much better with one or both of their parents? Its always in the best interest of the child to be with their biological parents unless there is molestation or excessive abuse. However, presently more than 70% of the cases in DCFS are based on hearsay. Can you imagine losing your child over a lie and the government mandating this? This needs to stop and unfortunately it is too common… Tupac said it best, the hate you give little infants messes up the World. When are we going to say enough is enough and put our children first? I can go even deeper because our children are being human trafficked as well. The average age of a human trafficking victim in the United States of America is 12 years old. People sell their souls for money, so no wonder people are also selling children too. If you are paying attention it is all incredibly sad, and to make matters worse the media gets into our children’s minds at such a young age, especially social media which causes low selfesteem and as a result child suicide has risen drastically. A child with low esteem is looking for love, but it is hard to find love when the Government has divided their heart. I say this to say, we as parents must speak up for the voiceless: against the self-hating media; against the courts that separate our children from their parents; and against the human traffickers…. LET OUR CHILDREN GO!

AFR congratulates Rep. Maxine Waters on her renewed position as chair of the House Financial Services Committee, an important panel with jurisdiction over a broad range of issues with profound impacts on people and communities across the country. We are heartened that the committee will continue to be led by a champion of economic and racial justice, one who does not hesitate to call Wall Street CEOs and predatory lenders on the carpet when necessary to protect the public interest. At a time of national crisis and following on four years of aggressive financial deregulation by the Trump administration, the challenges the committee will contend with are immense. The COVID-19 pandemic, with associated economic harms, frames one set of urgent actions for the committee: to protect consumers,

homeowners and renters, the homeless, people of color, and all vulnerable populations that have been disproportionately affected by the crisis. At the same time, there are a host of long-term problems with the ways in which the financial system drives and perpetuates growing inequality and a widening racial wealth gap. Chair Waters has a long track record of fighting for consumers, and for a government that works on their behalf. She has been a leader in standing up for a strong Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. She has highlighted the need to stop predatory lending that traps people in a cycle of debt, and end abuses in the credit reporting industry that shut people out of opportunity and increase the cost of credit. She has steadfastly called out wrongdoing by for profit schools and called for cancellation of student debt Rep. Waters has championed antiracism in many dimensions of policy,

including forcefully opposing the Trump administration’s constant efforts to weaken tools to fight discrimination, such as gutting the disparate impact standard and the rules aimed at proactively encouraging fair housing. With Chair Waters at the helm, the Financial Services Committee held the first-ever hearing on abuses by the private equity industry and policy solutions to address them, focusing attention on a rapidly growing presence in the U.S. economy that urgently requires major reform. The committee also released a powerful report on widespread abuses by Wells Fargo and grilled its CEO, Tim Sloan, at a hearing; Sloan resigned shortly thereafter. We are excited at the opportunity to continue to work with Chair Waters to advance economic and racial justice and make the banking and financial systems work better for everyday people.

Intimate Transgender Drama “Lupe” to Premiere on HBO Latino & HBO Max on February 26 Critically Acclaimed Feature Film “Lupe” Explores the Transgender Journey of a Cuban Immigrant IT News Wire

HBO Latino has acquired film festival darling the moving LGBTQ immigrant story “Lupe,” co-directed by André Phillips (“Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary,” “This Killing Business”) & Charles Vuolo (“Rot,” “Alice Fades Away”), to premiere on Friday, February 26 (8:00 p.m. ET/ PT) on HBO Latino and available to stream on HBO Max. “Lupe” is an extraordinary trifecta of an emotional drama that explores the topics of family, immigration and embracing one’s true identity. In the feature film debut of directing team André Phillips & Charles Vuolo, we are introduced to the complex world of Rafael (Rafael Albarrán in a star making turn), a Cuban immigrant and boxer, struggling with their transgender identity while searching for their missing sister, Isabel (the luminescent Lucerys Medina) in New York City’s underground sex industry. “Lupe” was written and directed with consultation from Celia Harrison, a transgender artist, and additionally shepherded through by transgender executive producer Kerry Michelle O’Brien (“Chopin to Infinity”). “Lupe” shines an intimate light on the complex story of an immigrant struggling with their transgender identity while searching for their missing sister, Isabel in New York City’s underground sex industry. The city’s underworld turns bloody as Rafael continues their quest to liberate their sister from a life of exploitation. Rafael’s search is routine and bloody until the growing need to understand

their gender identity beings to compete with their mission? A film of many contrasts (Cuba vs. NY City, a chiseled boxer vs. a femme fatale), this moving film moves seamlessly between English & Spanish and features a rich cinematic landscape lensed by cinematographer T. Acton Fitzgerald (“Gutterbug”). Celia Harrison portrays the role of Lana, the protagonist’s friend and advisor. All of Celia’s scenes were unscripted, as the

directors emphatically sought to retain Celia’s voice and perspective. This rich tapestry of a transgender immigrant was written by Celia Harrison, André Phillips & Charles Vuolo, featuring a score by Christopher French (“Unlovable,” “Young & Hungry”) edited by Shiran Amir (“Z Nation,” “Student Body”) produced by Anthony Ambrosino (“The Wrong Todd,” “Painless”), Andrew McCarthy (“Radio Days,” “Alice Fades

Away”), Leigh Lanocha (“The Clear,” “Gutterbug”), and executive produced by Kerry Michelle O’Brien. “We are incredibly proud to have ‘Lupe’ debut on HBO, this bilingual story of loss, identity and discovery has found it’s perfect platform. To have a film that features transgender individuals portrayed not as victims but actual champions of their own destiny is such an important message to be seen and heard, front and center without having to be hidden in allegories,” Kerry Michelle O’Brien, executive producer. The ultimate hope with “Lupe” was to create a work of expression that avoids overt category and classification. To show the character of Rafael, a struggling immigrant and transgender woman, can be seen as realistic, flawed but strong. Many films have portrayed transgender characters as drug addicts, prostitutes and mentally unstable. The filmmakers and cast believe the most interesting characters are imperfect, honest and tangible. “Lupe” is a film that seeks to showcase some of the realworld issues and struggles facing the transgender community in a grounded and positive manner. To lend the film a quasi-documentary feeling, the filmmakers embraced a bare-bones style of filming utilizing hand-held cinematography while filming in both NYC and in the Dominican Republic. Michelle Welch of Shoreline Entertainment negotiated on behalf of the filmmaking team directly with Leslie Cohen, Senior Vice President, Content Acquisitions on behalf of HBO.
