Gerard McCallum - The Man with the Golden Plan
Gerard McCallum is the ultimate development planner who has been a key player in the renaissance of the City of Inglewood. McCallum is shown here with his dog Lando. By Kenneth Miller, Publisher
When you take a look at the massive development of the City of Inglewood, one would have to explore long and deep to discover the man who has been at the foundation of it all. That’s because Gerard McCallum prefers to be an effective key player behind the scene, executing on a vision that was once a far fetched dream decades ago. Just look around Inglewood today and the evolution is becoming clearer
by each passing day. Robust housing construction and of course the cherry on the top, the $5 billion SoFi Stadium mix development project that will include a five star hotel, shops, retail outlets, parks and an additional entertainment venue at the location of Prairie Ave. and Century Blvd. “I am amazed and proud of the people of color in this community, whose strength is fortified by its residents and have become a model for others to follow,” McCallum explained in an exclusive interview with
Inglewood Today. McCallum, the Senior Project Manager for San Francisco based Wilson Meany, a prominent developer of mixed-use, residential, retail, office and master plan urban infill properties. His journey west from his humble beginnings in Houma, Louisiana has led him to the epicenter of the entertainment and sports capitol of the world and Inglewood was nothing like this when he first arrived as a young child. That was in 1965 during the tail
end of the Watts Riots when his late father came to visit McCallum’s uncle in Watts, but had to find safe shelter for his son in a motel in then lilywhite Inglewood. “I was just a kid and not understanding what was going on at the time,” McCallum reflected. Little did he know way back then that he would one day call Inglewood his adopted home. McCallum’s first project in the city was in 1995 when the Lakers were soon to be leaving for Los Angeles and Holly- Continued on page 2 JOIN US ON

The Most Senior
Citizen at the Inglewood Senior Center By Francis Taylor, Senior Writer
Vernita Smith, who was born in 1922 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, prides herself as being the oldest (most senior) citizen who regularly attends the Inglewood Senior Center and this week, on Wednesday, enjoyed the lunch feast of herbed baked chicken,
split pea soup, wg couscous, cauliflower, cucumber onion and dill salad, pineapple tidbits and milk. Smith was the youngest child with four older brothers and one sister. The family moved from Oklahoma to Watts in Southern California when she was about nine years old. Her mother was a teacher and Continued on page 6

Kelvin Smith constructed to inspire Local businessman driven to help others
By Kenneth Miller, Publisher
‘Never Give Up’- “ Gangs are like war. In order to defeat them, you must cut their supply lines of fresh troops so there will be no one left to fight. In order to do that, you need to give those kids a positive alternative.” –Lou Dantzler, founder of Challengers Boys & Girls ClubThe hands of Kelvin Smith resemble a man who has worked long, hard and grueling hours in the construction field, but his heart and soul reflects that of the late Lou Dantzler, founder of Challengers Boys & Girls Club who passionately spent his life helping individuals escape an existence of poverty, crime and futility. Part of Smith’s journey is chronicled in Dantzler’s book ‘A Place to Go, A Place to Grow’ and defines how Smith escaped a life of street gangs, drug pusher, violence and crime to become a successful businessman, father and mentor. He went from being one of the kids that found solace at Challengers, to a man responsible for building the ‘Smile’ dentistry and the tennis courts at the South Los Angeles center. That was especially significant to Smith because as he explained it; “It was huge because the kids saw as an example of what could happen for them. If Kelvin can do it then anybody
can do it.” Kelvin Smith’s remarkable transformation was inspired by the very words and deeds of Dantzler who encouraged him to never give up on himself and those less unfortunate. Like many who grow up in impoverished communities, the best choices are not always the ones made, but instead the ones not made. Smith had aspirations of being a football player, but a bum shoulder ended those dreams at Pasadena City College. He enjoyed modest success as a defensive back at Manual Arts high School on the lower level and then varsity team. Reality hit hard when his son, Kelvin Jr. was born in 1991 and that is when Smith as states it; “I had to go to work.” Coming from a family of electricians, Smith ironically began his career as a truck driver. First being taught how to operate one by his childhood friend and then subsequently purchasing his own big rig. While his son was still an infant, Smith began working in the lucrative construction industry at Hemsley Construction Company Inc. The construction industry has not been minority or African American friendly, so Smith was fortunate to get in as an employee. Smith eventually obtained his con-
struction license and maintained the business under the same name and has not looked back since. He operates his company out of his home and many of his employees are gang members, former drug offenders, or felons similar to the people Dantzler detailed in his book. “I hire a lot of gang members and teach them how to operate equipment. I believe in reaching back and pull someone else up. These people would not have been hired by anyone else. We train them how to operate equipment and make sure the get lessons of a trade,” Smith added. He feels equally obligated demonstrating to young people how important it is to care for the seniors in their community, by mentoring kids to take out the trash for the elderly and performing other chores that enhance the
quality of life for all. Smith is the father to four children, Kelvin Jr., who resides in Canada, LaToya, Khaila and Calvin. When asked the best example he has provided to his children, Smith’s response on the profound. “I think the best example I provided to my kids was my work ethic, loyalty and determination. I am a firm believer that hard works pays off and there is no substitute to doing your best.” That philosophy earned him rave reviews on projects such as construction on the main entrance at Universal Studios. Smith has also been very instrumental in the promotion of those who worked for him. Some have went on to work on major projects such as the Crenshaw/LAX Line and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.
Mike Bloomberg Makes History with the Black Press of America By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior Correspondent
Recognizing the importance of the Black vote and the reach of the Black Press of America, Democratic Presidential Candidate Mike Bloomberg has just delivered the largest single advertising buy to the Black Press in the 80-year history of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA). The NNPA is the national trade association that represents 230 blackowned newspapers and media companies throughout the nation. The $3.5 million ad buy became of-
ficial on Monday, Feb. 10, 2020, during Black History Month. It enables Bloomberg to continue his aggressive campaign for president with ads appearing in Black Press of America publications throughout the upcoming Super Tuesday states, as well as other key states where the Black vote will be the determinative factor in the Democratic Party primaries. Columbia, South Carolina Mayor Steve Benjamin, who co-chairs Bloomberg’s campaign, said the deal is reflective of the former New York City mayor’s commitment toward
building an inclusive economy. “The Bloomberg campaign’s initiative is groundbreaking, and it goes to significantly increasing the economic health of African Americans by tripling their net worth,” said Mayor Benjamin. “The Bloomberg model is intentionally focused on creating a million new African American homeowners, 100,000 new African American-owned businesses, and $70 billion in federal capital to go in the 100 most challenged neighborhoods across the country.” Benjamin added that the ad agree-
ment counts as a recognition that, while some people only talk about accomplishing important initiatives, Bloomberg follows through. “Mike has a history and a record as mayor, CEO, and philanthropist, of getting things done,” Benjamin stated. “The ad buy not only is a show of respect to the incredible impact and importance of African American journalism but also it is Mike walking the walk when it comes to his investing in African American-owned businesses.” Steven N. This touchdown reception stands as the longest pass and reception in Wildcats’ history. her father was a Pullman porter. With both working-parents in the household, and as the ‘baby’ in the family, smith enjoyed a comfortable upbringing. Smith attended Compton College and later graduated from the University of California Los Angeles with a nursing degree. She earned the designation of Registered Nurse, RN, and was the first African American to be hired as a nurse at the Los Angeles County Hospital. During her long nursing career in Southern California, she had worked at several of the area’s medical facilities including tenure at Martin Luther King Hospital where she was a critical care nurse and worked in the emergency room that gained wide acclaim for their treatment of traumatic and often gang-related shootings and other assaults. She remembers working with Dr. George E. Locke, the retired Chair of the Department of Neurosciences and the brain surgeon whose medical feats achieved widespread acclaim. Smith had a swift answer when asked about her secret for a long and healthy life. “Try to be a Christian,” she said and that was also the answer when she was asked what advice she had for young nurses who are embarking on a nursing career. When you put Christ first, everything falls into place. Smith did not describe any special diet that has contributed to her longev-
ity. She has never smoked cigarettes or adopted a vegan lifestyle and reluctantly admitted that she enjoys an occasional glass of wine but never any hard liquor. When she was younger she exercised regularly and maintained a healthy weight. Moderation is the key element, she said. Smith’s favorite thing to do is travel. She has been nearly everywhere in the world except Africa. “The only reason I have not been to Africa is that I could never find anyone to travel with me,” she explained. “I still want to visit the African continent and at the age of 98 she said she is ready to go, if she can find a travel companion! Smith is not on Facebook or Instagram so if you are interested joining her on a trip to Africa, you will probably find her dining with friends at the Inglewood Senior Center.

the NNPA advertising salesman who helped in negotiations with Bloomberg’s campaign, called the ad buy a “Historic partnership between Mike Bloomberg and the Black Press.” Reaching Black America in 2020 is critical for all presidential candidates, according to the Brookings Institute, a nonprofit public policy organization in Washington, D.C. In a recent study, researchers at Brookings noted that candidates increase their chances of winning the presidency by “taking the long-range approach of energizing Black voters. Both parties should not discount the powerful recent election results in which Black votes determined the outcome.” A new Quinnipiac poll revealed that Bloomberg is steadily gaining traction among Black voters. The survey showed that Bloomberg rose 7 points overall, just two points behind former Vice President Joe Biden, who dropped 7 points. Bloomberg now polls second among Black voters with 22 percent to Biden’s 27 percent. The former New York City mayor recently unveiled his Greenwood Initiative, which is designed to ignite economic justice for African Americans. Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., the president and CEO of the NNPA, NNPA, emphasized, “It is appropriate and politically providential that candidates for the highest office in the nation recognize and sustain the significance of reaching African American voters through the Black Press of America via the NNPA. Mike Bloomberg has now stepped up to the plate with the commitment of his resources at this pivotal moment in history to affirm the importance of the Black vote in 2020.”
ily, as well as Chargers players, coaches and front office staff. It’s great for us to grow our partnership with the team as it prepares to move into SoFi Stadium and start an exciting new chapter in franchise history. The Chargers are the perfect fit for CBS 2 and our viewers, as this new partnership agreement includes preseason game rights that dovetail nicely with CBS Sports’ rights to AFC regular season and playoff games.” “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with CBS 2 as we open our SoFi Stadium home this year and enter a new era of Los Angeles Chargers football,” said Spanos. “This truly is the perfect partnership on a number of levels. Not only did CBS 2 carry 11 of our 16 regular season games last season but Jim Hill, prior to becoming the sports broadcasting icon that he is here in Los Angeles, is a former first-round draft pick of ours and a beloved Chargers alum. When you consider Jim’s increased involvement with the franchise, the year-round coverage, first-rate preseason telecasts, in-depth features, off-field community collaboration and extensive postgame analysis of regular season contests, we simply can’t wait for the 2020 season to kick off and have CBS 2 right there with us.”

From the desk of
MIKE BLOOMBERG Dear Reader, Thank you for taking the time to learn about The Greenwood Initiative. As someone who has been very lucky in life, I often say my story would only have been possible in America — and that’s true. But I also know that because of the artificial barriers of discrimination, my story likely would have turned out very differently if I had been Black, and that more Black Americans of my generation would have ended up with far more wealth, had they been white. Building Generational Wealth for Black Families is Critical. That’s why I launched The Greenwood Initiative in Tulsa last month. I visited the site of the Black Wall Street Massacre, where a white mob decimated the prosperous community of Greenwood. It is to the memory of the lost lives and promise of Greenwood that we’ve dedicated The Greenwood Initiative: a plan to address the systematic bias that has kept Black Americans from building wealth.
THE GREENWOOD PLAN WILL: • Create 1 million new Black homeowners • Double the number of new Black-owned businesses • Invest $70 billion in the country’s 100 most disadvantaged neighborhoods
Fixing the System for Black Families. When I was mayor of New York, I was proud to take on the systematic inequality that held back too many New Yorkers. We increased education funding, built 650 new schools and raised Black graduation rates to record highs. We led an ambitious effort to reduce poverty and managed the largest amount of affordable housing in the nation. And as President, I will work even more aggressively to combat inequality nationwide. I understand that undoing generations of systematic discrimination won’t happen overnight, but we can make progress with a clear vision and a comprehensive plan. I’ve included a pamphlet along with this letter that lays out my plan. When I’m President, implementing The Greenwood Initiative will be a top priority. Join me in ending the systemic inequality that has held Black Americans back for too long! Sincerely, Mike Bloomberg
