Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts Jr. had to walk over the gravel, dirt, step on loose wooden blocks, endure the dust, noise and busy construction workers before he finally reached the

We were once known as the City of Champions, we are the City of Champions once again,” Butts explained to Inglewood Today at SoFi Stadium on Feb. 11th. Joining Mayor Butts for the monumental announcement was WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon, Jason Gannon, Managing Director, SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park, in addition to champions Becky Lynch and Andrade. Gannon spoke to how significant it is that the citizens of Inglewood enjoy what’s unfolding at the venue. “It’s incredibly important for us to not only have citizens of Inglewood here on game day, but really 365 days of the year. City Welcomes Wrestlemania to Inglewood City Treasurer Violates Rules of Decorum

By Francis Taylor, Senior Writer

The weekly city council meeting got underway on time and the council members swiftly discharged the city’s business. The council approved Amendment One to Agreement No. 19-302 with Meyers Nave Riback Silver & Wilson, PC for expanded legal services and additional compensation. The council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Los Angeles Food Bank, to support participation in the Older Adult Expansion Program. The council clarified actions regarding the December 17, 2019 award of a Contract (Agreement No. 20-085) to Griffith Company, Inc. for the Transit Center Project for $5,480,500.00 (inclusive of the Contractor’s bid of $4,982,273.00 plus a 10% City controlled contingency of $498,227.00) per the terms, conditions and provisions of the Bid Documents for Bid No. CB-19-18. The council set a public hearing to consider an appeal of Planning Commission Denial of Special Use Permit No. 2019-014 (SP-2019-014) to allow the sale of beer and wine for off-site consumption from an existing convenience market at 400 West Manchester Boulevard. The city treasurer began her report with a rambling diatribe, expressing her opinion about how the Los Angeles Rams ultimately selected the City of Inglewood to build their multi-billion dollar stadium and how a city staffer travelled to the Super Bowl and charged that trip to the City of Inglewood. With what appeared to be a jab at the mayor and city council, the city treasurer said that a cartoon character could have delivered the stadium to the city and she demanded

that the city be repaid for the unauthorized Super Bowl trip. When her time expired, the mayor asked that her microphone be silenced so that the council meeting could continue. At that point the city treasurer proceeded to violate several elements of the City of Inglewood, Rules of Decorum, for city council meetings. Rule number one reads, ‘persons addressing the City council must do so in an orderly manner without making personal, impertinent, slanderous or profane remarks to the Council, City staff or general public. Violators may be barred from speaking further and could be ejected from the meeting.” Rule number two reads, “persons addressing the City council shall limit their remarks to three minutes or the time established by the presiding officer for that subject. The presiding officer may set different time limits based upon the number of speakers wishing to address the Council.” The city treasurer loudly and boldly expressed her displeasure with the mayor, disrupting the council meeting for a short period of time, gathered her belongings and further uttered her displeasure with the mayor as she exited the council chambers. At the end of the meeting the mayor expressed his concern for the city treasurer and explained the complicated, difficult and uncertain process of bringing the Rams to Inglewood and complemented the council for their skill in delivering the stadium. He also asked the city staffer who was accused by the city treasurer of unauthorized travel to Miami for the Super Bowl to explain himself. The staffer indicated that he did not travel to Miami and watched the game on television with his family in Inglewood. A representative from Assemble member Au- Continued on page 7

Legislative Republicans Tapping Into Freelancer Frustration By California Black News Media

Two weeks ago, Assemblymember Kevin Kiley (R-Roseville) delivered a binder of articles titled “AB 5 Stories” to every lawmaker in the legislature at the state Capitol in Sacramento. It contained PDFs of testimonials written by about 200 gig economy workers affected by new restrictions imposed by AB 5, also known as the “Dynamex Law,” which took effect in California Jan. 1, 2020. Freelancers like writers, musicians, dancers, screenwriters, composers and court translators contributed to the narratives that detailed how the law is impacting their lives. “Governor Newsom: we are here today to tell you that your vision cannot be reality as long as AB 5 is on the books,” Kiley said, speaking at a rally to organized to repeal AB 5 and referring to the governor’s guiding governing principle “California for All,” which aims to build a state where there is shared prosperity. Hundreds of freelancers from across the state attended the rally. “Governor, your own former deputy chief of staff called AB 5 ‘one of the most destructive pieces of legislation in the last 20 years,” Kiley told the cheering crowd. The law, authored by Assemblymember Lorena Gonazalez (D-San Diego), rewrites California’s labor law, requiring employers based in California to reclassify their contractors to W-2 employees to comply with a 2018 California Supreme Court ruling. Under the new rules, employers will have to offer the standard minimum wage,

sick leave and other employee benefits required by state law. “This is an effort to right a ship that’s gone wrong,” Gonzalez recently told the Los Angeles Times, referring to of AB 5. “And I believe so fully in it that I’m willing to continue to take on what is a lot of piling on. You’ve got to get it right.” But now Senate Republican leaders, responding to the fallout AB 5 is causing in the so-called “gig economy,” are finding common ground with workers across party affiliations in a state where registered Democratic voters outnumber registered Republican voters by nearly 20 percentage points. “A bad law has put our hard of hearing and deaf communities at risk of not having access to important services,” said Senate Republican Leader Shanon Grove (R-Bakersfield), referring to freelancers who provide services for disabled Californians. “Republicans are offering a solution so independent contractors can once again provide services as interpreters, live closed captioners, or court reporters in settings such as medical facilities, courtrooms, or live television. Republicans will continue our efforts to fight for freelancers in the Capitol,” Grove said. Grove and Senator Brian Jones (REl Cajon) introduced SB 875. The bill proposes exemptions to AB 5 for interpreters ad translators. Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) introduced SB 867 and SB 868. Her bills call for carve-outs in the law for freelance journalists, newspapers carriers, and distributors. Senator Jones also in-

troduced SB 881which would provide exemptions for musicians and contractors who provide freelance services in the music industry. “AB 5 has decimated a lot of freelance interpreters and translators who work in a profession that requires them to be on the road often,” said Jones.

“These folks thrive in their profession, working with a wide variety of clients and unpredictable schedules. Now, AB 5 forces them into an ‘employee’ category which is wrong and this legislation is the first step in correcting it.”

LA County Voter Participation Alert from Rep. Waters Inglewood Today News

LOS ANGELES – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43) issued an urgent message to Los Angeles County residents regarding the new Los Angeles County voting system that will be implemented in the 2020 primary election on March 3, 2020 and the 2020 general election on November 3, 2020: “I want each and every resident of Los Angeles County to be aware that our county has adopted a completely new voting system that will be implemented for the first time in our March 3 primary and November 11 general election. While our early voting period has been extended to 11 days, the new voting system has overhauled more than 5,000 traditional polling places and replaced them with approximately

970 new voting centers. The new system also utilizes new touchscreen voting machines that will print out paper ballots, and each voting center will have staff on hand to answer questions about the new machines. “While these changes may be straightforward, I am extremely concerned about the lack of information that has been shared with LA county residents, which could lead to confusion for members of our community on election day. It is imperative that the LA County Registrar’s Office disseminate information about these changes through radio, television, and newspaper advertising and by working with local clergy members, elected officials, civil rights leaders, and advocacy groups to spread the word about the new voting system. To that end, I have

already held four town hall meetings in my District that included presentations by Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, Dean C. Logan, who demonstrated the new voting machines, explained how and where they will be used, and answered questions from leaders across the 43rd District. Nevertheless, I remain incredibly worried about the lack of awareness and outreach in our community. “LA County must not suffer the same fate as Iowa. Our new voting system must be easily understood, accessible, and verifiable. I will continue to do all that I can to inform LA County residents of the changes that have been made to our voting system. I urge all LA County residents to not only ensure that their family members and friends are aware of the changes

Move forward and not backwards

to our system, but to also take the time to locate the new voting centers in their community and take advantage of the extended early voting days. I also encourage residents to familiarize themselves with the new touchscreen equipment, to ask for help if they experience issues with the machines on election day, and to verify their paper ballot printouts before submitting them. If you see something, say something. We cannot allow our democracy to be weakened or the integrity of our elections to be undermined because we fail to fully understand and inform our community about our new voting system. We must do everything in our power to ensure that every LA County resident can fully participate in our election.”

Sports & Entertainment It’s time for prep hoop dreams to emerge By Kenneth Miller, Publisher

March Madness can wait, a Frenzied February unfolds this week as the high school basketball season swings into the race for championships, but you will likely have to look beyond Inglewood for a title contender. The local girls and boy’s teams at Inglewood and Morningside, respectively, will have just one representative in the CIF Southern Section playoffs with the Monarchs boys’ squad the only team to qualify. Head coach Donnell Meekins returned for his second stint and has already did something that had not been accomplished in 27 years. The Monarchs defeated rival Inglewood twice, winning the final game of the regular season 80-75 to clinch third place in the Pioneer League and qualify for the post season. Morningside girls more than doubled their win total from last season going 6-14, but failed to win a league game in 10 tries. The Sentinels girls finished level at 14-14, but only 3-7 in league and the boy’s team went 11-12, 4-6 and missed the playoffs. While Meekins and Morningside figure to face a most difficult road ahead, there is now a flicker of hope that better

days might be around the corner. Morningside played Pasadena Poly on Feb. 12th. Poly went an impressive 23-4, but Morningside was optimistic at press time. Meanwhile, not all is lost for the City of Inglewood, as local homeboys Reggie Howard and Pookey Wigington

will lead Ribet into the CIF-SS D-2A bracket as the top seed team. Ribet is among the top ranked teams in the state with a 21-6 record with victories over St. Bernard and Fairfax. The Frogs will open at home on Feb. 14. Howard is the head coach and grew up in Inglewood and played at St Ber-

nard, while Wigington is his assistant and starred at Morningside. Elsewhere, Westchester’s girls and boys earned high seeds in the Los Angeles City Section tournament. The Comets (19-8) boy team finished second in the Western League to Fairfax and earned a No. 2 seed in the Open Division, while the girls finished below .500 at 12-15 went 8-4 in league but still earned the top seed in Division 1. This Comet team has blown massive leads against rivals Fairfax and been blown away by CIF-SS Open Division power Etiwanda twice, but veteran coach Ed Azzam is hoping for one clean stretch during the time they usually perform their best. Westchester will host Washington Prep on Feb. 14. Ironically, the day before Kobe Bryant succumbed in a helicopter accident, he was scheduled to meet the boys basketball team and present them with his signature Kobe V sneakers. Lawndale Leuzinger girls went 20-8 on the season and finished strong to make the CIF-SS D-2 tourney. The Olympians open against Summit in Fontana on Feb. 13 in a win or go home match-up.

Chargers Quarterback Philip Rivers to Enter Free Agency IT news Wire

The Los Angeles Chargers and quarterback Philip Rivers have mutually agreed that Rivers will enter free agency and not return to the team for the 2020 season. “After stepping back a bit from last season, we reconnected with Philip and his representatives to look at how 2019 played out, assess our future goals, evaluate the current state of the roster and see if there was a path forward that made sense for both parties,” said General Manager Tom Telesco. “As we talked through various scenarios, it became apparent that it would be best for Philip and the Chargers to turn the page on what has truly been a remarkable run. “We agreed that making this decision well before free agency would allow everyone to put themselves in the best position for success in 2020. “I’ve said before that Philip can still compete at a top-starter level and, in a perfect world, number 17 is your quarterback forever. Obviously, we live in an imperfect world where the only constant

is change. I think Philip’s tremendous perspective, both when it comes to football and when it comes to life, helped lend clarity to a very complex situation.” “I am very grateful to the Spanos family and the Chargers organization for the last 16 years,” said Rivers. “In anything you do, it’s the people you do it with that make it special. There are so many relationships and memories with coaches, support staff and teammates

that will last forever, and for that I am so thankful. “I never took for granted the opportunity to lead this team out on to the field for 235 games. We had a lot of great moments, beginning in San Diego and then finishing in LA. I wish my teammates and coaches nothing but the best moving forward. “I’m not sure what the future holds, but my family and I look forward to see-

ing what God has planned for us next. “Nunc Coepi.“ Rivers, who owns more than 30 franchise records, ranks inside the Top 10 of the NFL’s all-time lists in numerous categories. His 123 career regular season victories as a starter rank ninth in NFL history, ahead of the likes of Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana and Jim Kelly. Sitting at No. 6 on the all-time touchdowns list with 397, ahead of John Elway, Montana and Unitas, Rivers joined Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Brett Favre and Dan Marino this past season as the only players to eclipse 58,000 career passing yards. His 70 300-plus passing yard performances, more than all-time greats Marino and Favre, are good for fourth in NFL history behind only Brees, Peyton Manning and Brady. “Through 16 seasons, 224 consecutive starts and more ‘dadgummits’ and ‘shoots’ than any of us can count, not only has Philip Rivers been our quarterback, he’s been the heart and soul of our organization,” Continued on page 7

said Owner Dean Spanos. “He wore a bolo tie and cowboy boots to games. He introduced us to ‘Nunc Coepi.’ He always went out of his way to interact with the fans, and he even made fans of nuns. Over the years, I think he broke just about every team record in the book and, simply put, it was just fun to watch him play football. “There’s only one Philip Rivers, and we’ve been fortunate to call him our QB1 for the better part of two decades. We cannot thank Philip enough for giving it his all on every single down and for the memories he created that will last a lifetime.” Rivers’ streak of 224 consecutive starts is a franchise-best and the third longest since 1970, trailing Favre (297) and Bruce Matthews (229). In 2014, Rivers became the first player in NFL history to post five straight games with a passer rating of at least 120 in a single season. Four years later, he posted the most consecutive completions in NFL history, connecting on 25-straight attempts in a 35-point home win over Arizona. An eight-time Pro Bowler, Rivers trails only Larry Fitzgerald, Joe Thomas, Jason Peters and DeMarcus Ware among players that entered the NFL since 2004.
