Former Rams Aqib Talib and John Johnson
reunite to give kids shopping spree
By Francis Taylor, Senior Writer
The arrival of the Los Angeles Rams in the City of Inglewood is not only altering and improving the city’s landscape as they continue the development of the SoFi Stadium and Entertainment Complex, they are also demonstrating
social responsibility and effective community relations as they contribute to the overall well-being of Inglewood’s residents and neighboring communities. On Tuesday Nov. 10th, former Rams cornerback Aqib Talib and safety John Johnson III hosted a holiday shopping
101 local governments support affordable strategies to reduce greenhouse gas IT News Wire
The Southern California Gas Company has announced that more than 110 local governments across Southern California, representing approximately 8 million people, have passed resolutions in support of affordable and balanced strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The resolutions urge policymakers to safeguard consumers’ ability to choose natural gas, propane, or electric appliances for their homes and businesses. They were passed in response to concerns that state agencies are being called upon to take steps to prohibit the use of affordable natural gas in buildings.
“Advances in renewable natural gas and hydrogen technologies mean that we can meet our climate goals without sacrificing the reliability and resilience of our energy systems and without forcing people to give up their gas stoves, board up their fireplaces and take on costly renovations,” said Sharon Tomkins, SoCalGas vice president of strategy and engagement and chief environmental officer. “To meet its ambitious environmental goals, California needs clean gas working together with clean electricity, and most importantly we cannot lose sight of affordability.” A growing number Continued on page 7

His spirited remarks were well received by the young players as he discussed his non-profit organization, Motivation Foundation, which encourages young people to aspire to achieve whatever they want to become. “My foundation helps young people Continued on page 2
WESSON EARNS DEMOCRATIC PARTY ENDORSEMENT HE IS THEIR CHOICE FOR SUPERVISOR IN A LANDSLIDE VOTE
IT News Wire
LA City Council President Herb Wesson received the official endorsement of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party (LACDP) after a landslide vote where Mr. Wesson received more than 60% of the delegate votes – more than double that of the runner-up. The LACDP represents over 2.7 million
registered Democrats. Wesson is running to replace termed-out Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas in District 2, an overwhelmingly Democratic district that encompasses large swaths of South Los Angeles. There are currently over 654,000 registered Democrats in the 2nd District, where Democrats outnumber Republicans nearly 8 to 1. Wesson’s campaign enjoys widespread support from over 60 elected officials including LA Mayor Eric Garcetti and LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn, and hundreds of labor unions and local leaders. This endorsement is a true game-changer for Wesson and solidifies his position as the true frontrunner in the Continued on page 2 JOIN US ON

Entering the 2019 season, the Los Angeles Rams formalized their support of the youth football program and the LAPD’s efforts to bridge community and police relations through the game of football by renaming the Watts Bears, the Watts Rams. The LACDP is focused on electing candidates who are best suited to lead Los Angeles to overcome the most pressing issues of the day like climate change, gender & racial inequity, and homelessness, and there is no candidate better prepared than Herb Wesson to take on these challenges. Golden State Water Company Honored
By Francis Taylor, Senior Writer
Before the council members got down to business at the weekly council meeting, Mayor Butts read and presented a commendation to the Golden State Water Company for their partnership on Community Outreach Projects that have benefitted residents in need in the City of Inglewood. The city saluted the Golden State Water Company and Southwest General Manager, Kate Nutting, who also serves as Board Chair for the CA-NV section of the American Water Works Association, for their partnership with D-4 Council Member Ralph Franklin that provided more than 50 Inglewood families with Thanksgiving turkeys this year. A representative from the Los Angeles County Clerk’s office presented a comprehensive overview of the new voting system that replaces the outdated and decertified system that has been in place for over 50 years. Registered voters may explore the new voting experience at demonstration centers set up in Inglewood City Hall Lobby and Public Library. Several public hearings were conducted by the council. The first considered an ordinance amending Inglewood Municipal Code Chapter 11 related to building regulations that adopts by reference the 2019 California, Title 24 Building codes. H-1. The second public hearing considered approval of the Draft Fiscal Year 2018-2019 Consolidated Annual Performance Evaluation Report (CAPER) for the submission to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Los Angeles Field Office by the December 30, 2019, deadline. The ordinance was introduced and the report was approved for submission to HUD. The council adopted a resolution amending the Fiscal Year 2019-2020 budget in order to roll prior year encumbrances into the current Fiscal Year and approved a four-year coopera-
tive agreement with IPS Group, Inc., to purchase, install and use software for smart parking meters, sensors, and multi-space pay stations citywide. The council approved an agreement with PayByPhone Technologies, Inc., to conduct a twelve (12) month pilot program for on-street parking meters mobile payment option at no cost to the City and awarded and approved a contract for professional services with Advantec Consulting Engineers, Inc., to provide design and construction engineering services for the Inglewood Intelligent Transportation System. The council awarded a contract and approved an agreement with Michael Baker International, Inc., to provide engineering design services for the Inglewood Intelligent Transportation System. The council adopted a resolution amending the Fiscal Year 2019-2020 budget to include grant funds, upon receipt, in the amount of $9,275,000 from Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) for the Residential Sound Insulation Program Grant Implementation Plan 15 and adopted a Resolution authorizing the destruction of Residential Sound Insulation (RSI) Program Records. During the public comments, Member Morales was congratulated for his fund raising efforts that assisted the local school’s soccer teams. He thanked his staff for organizing the effort and all of those who generously contributed to this worthy cause, indicating that while a $1,500 goal was the fund raiser target, over $5,000 was raised that allowed the teams to order new uniforms. He also echoed his council colleagues’ appreciation to everyone involved in the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration. Member Padilla invited the community to support his Canned Food and Toy Drive that will be conducted Saturday from 10 am until 2 pm. He indicated that the event will support the LA Food Pantry on Beach Avenue. He also
announced a holiday Home Decorating Contest for all D-2 residents. Mayor Butts thanked the Public Works Department for all that they do to ensure the success of City events. He also congratulated Member Morales for his Soccer Teams’ fundraiser, announced the Inglewood Police Department Toy Drive that will be conducted
in front of Inglewood High School on Saturday, December 14th, and announced that the meeting will be closed in honor of a real ‘pillar of the community,’ Paul Smith.

Rep. Waters on SNAP Cuts: Trump Takes Food from Vulnerable Americans While Cutting Taxes for the Rich & Enriching Himself at Taxpayer Expense Inglewood Today News
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services, released a statement in response to the Trump administration’s final rule that imposes harsh work requirements on able-bodied adults with
no dependents who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, also known as Food Stamps, and cuts $5.5 billion from SNAP over five years. The administration’s rule is in addition to two proposed rules cutting SNAP benefits for millions of low-income Americans. One of the two proposed rules would
cut $4.5 billion in SNAP funding over five years, while the other would deny eligibility to 3 million low-income Americans. The Congresswoman’s statement follows: “Donald Trump’s cuts to the Food Stamp program are cruel beyond belief. “Trump’s latest rule callously slashes $5.5 billion from the Food Stamp program and imposes onerous work requirements on low-income Americans, many of whom live in areas where jobs are scarce. This rule comes in addition to two other proposed rules that would slash Food Stamp benefits for millions of hungry people in America, including children, seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and college students. According to an Urban Institute report, Trump’s Food Stamp cuts will take benefits away from a total of 3.7 million people and cut benefits by a total of $4.2 billion per year. “Trump’s heartless plans to cut the
Food Stamp program will hurt some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in America. They will take food away from veterans who have served our country with honor and courage and who are trying to live a meager existence in their retirement years. They will cause about one half million children to lose their eligibility for free school meals, leaving them hungry in their classrooms while they are trying to learn. They will hurt students who are trying to break the cycle of generational poverty, earn their college degrees, and prepare themselves for a better quality of life. They will hurt vulnerable Americans in small towns and rural communities who are already suffering because of Trump’s trade war and the resulting retaliatory tariffs against American agricultural products. “Trump’s heartless cuts to this critical anti-poverty program are in addition to his callous attempts to slash low-income housing. The Trump budget request cuts HUD funding by 18 percent. It eliminates new funding for programs such as the National Housing Trust
Fund, which the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) and other advocates fought so hard to create. His administration has also put forth an outrageous plan that would triple rents for the lowest income households in the country and put 1.7 million Americans at risk of eviction and homelessness. “Trump’s shameful cuts to housing programs would worsen the already difficult conditions that our most vulnerable populations face. The lack of affordable housing units is perhaps the greatest challenge to successfully lifting households out of poverty. NLIHC’s research shows a staggering statistic: we have a deficit of over 7.0 million affordable and available rental units in this country for extremely low-income households. Meanwhile, we continue to struggle to preserve what little affordable housing we do have. “While Donald Trump takes food from the mouths of children, he had no reservations about signing into law the GOP tax scam that’s a giveaway to corporations and the wealthiest one percent of Continued on page 7

Sports & Entertainment Rams need help from Chargers in playoff quest
BOLT OF LIGHTING: Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers ranks third in passing with 3,712 yards. By Kenneth Miller, Publisher
The Rams, riding a modest 2 game win streak, will be pulling for the hometown Chargers this week when both local teams play meaningful games with playoff implications at stake. While the Chargers will be hoping to avoid a losing season when they play host to the Minnesota Vikings at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, they can also help the Rams chances of qualifying for the playoffs with a victory. Sitting at 5-8 and in last place in the AFC West, the Chargers led by quar-
terback Phillip Rivers who ranks as the No.3 quarterback in passing yards with 3,748 must win to prevent a losing season. Meanwhile, the Rams (8-5) which got one of their best all around games all season in defeating the Seattle Seahawks 28-12 at the Coliseum last week, will visit Dallas for a date against the reeling Cowboys (6-7). A victory by the Chargers and Rams will move the Rams closer to playoffs as they would share an equal 9-5 mark with the Vikings, which owns the final wild-card spot in the NFC. Although the Cowboys are marred

in one of the longest losing streaks in the NFL at 3 games, they still cling to first place in the woeful NFC East, holding the tiebreaker advantage over the Philadelphia Eagles. Moreover, the Cowboys are still one of the most potent offensives in the NFL with Dak Prescott leading the league with 4,122 passing yards, Ezekiel Elliott with 1,071 yards rushing and receiver Amari Cooper averaging 15 yards per catch and totaling 1,054 yards on the season. While Rams signal caller Jared Goff has been highly criticized most of the season, he ranks behind Rivers with
3,712 yards passing and is an entirely different player when the Rams have receiver Robert Woods in the line-up. Likewise, running back Todd Gurley II appears to be rounding to form after a mysterious 2018 campaign to collect 721 yards on 177 carries. His 4.1 yards per carry give reason for optimism that the league’s once most dominant runner still has something left in the tank. This week will disclose more about Gurley II and the Rams if they can take care of their business in Dallas.

Win or lose, it will be bittersweet for this to end, but they’re eating this up right now.” Gardena has reached the final week of the high school football season. The Panthers will take on Lincoln of San Francisco on Saturday at noon at City College of San Francisco in the CIF State championship. “Over the years when we were 0-10 and then 0-20, we decided our senior year was going to be different. We couldn’t go out like that,” senior Kwanta Pugh said following the win in the regionals. “Our coaches have been great. They really help us. They talk with us and walk us through things and not scream. We’ve learned a lot from them.” The coaching staff is also learning from the players. “They keep us motivated,” McElroy said of the players. “They haven’t changed their routine. I like to call them
Part of the long road includes Gardena losing 24 consecutive games, including a pair of consecutive 0-10 seasons. “All we heard from the administration was how bad the previous staff was,” McElroy said. “They just didn’t need coaching, but culture change. A lot of them didn’t want to work, didn’t want to hit the weight room or run and just show up and play. We still haven’t changed everything yet, but we’re slowly changing the culture.” Defense leads the way South Torrance has 29 interceptions entering its Division 6-AA CIF State championship game against St. Bernard’s of Eureka on Saturday. Gardena has also received a boost from a tough secondary. In four of the last five games, the Panthers have intercepted 11 passes, with three coming in the regional championship game. “They have really stepped up,” McElroy said of the secondary.
make pit stops in Toronto, Minnesota and Chicago. Paul George and Kawhi Leonard are 17-7 in the stacked West. Leonard will make his first appearance on his old stomping grounds since leaving this past summer to join the Clippers. Coincidently, Leonard’s presence will be felt from the bench; as he is scheduled to sit out this game to rest. • The Clippers are 5-6 on the road and the Raptors have gone 9-2 in home games. Expect a very intense, choppy and emotional game in this matchup. • Toronto wasn’t expected to be a playoff contender team this year but has surprisingly shocked lots of naysayers. Pacal Siakam Leads the Raptors with 24.5 points and 8.4 rebounds. Norman Powell is also averaging 16.2 points. This should be a close game with or without Leonard’s presence. • The Timberwolves are currently on a five-game losing streak and will try to end the streak with upcoming home games. The Clippers biggest threat in Minnesota will be Karl Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins. Both players are averaging over 20 points per game. However, Minnesota hasn’t played well defensively giving up 117.5 points per game. • The Chicago Bulls are less than a stellar with 8-17 record. The Clippers prediction against the Bulls should be a victory as the Bulls best players are not playing up to their best abilities thus far.

Americans. Furthermore, he continues to enrich himself at the taxpayers’ expense. He charged the Secret Service more than $200,000 in taxpayer money for expenses at the Trump Hotel between September of 2016 and February of 2018[9] and his golfing excursions have cost American taxpayers more than $102 million in travel and security expenses as of May of this year. “It is abundantly clear that Donald Trump does not care about anyone except himself and his personal enrichment. of experts, including researchers at Stanford University, University of California, Irvine, and Lawrence Livermore Labs, have raised concerns that the electrification of buildings, alone, could undercut the state’s environmental goals, while making basic utility services less reliable and more expensive. “Renewable gases can increase people’s use of renewable energy and combat climate change—and we can’t become carbon neutral without them,” said Dr. Jack Brouwer, Director of the National Fuel Cell Research Center at University of California, Irvine. “These renewable gases are easily stored in the pipelines and also provide a complementary way to deliver renewable energy that will be more reliable and resilient than using the electric grid alone.” The Energy Futures Initiative (EFI), a research center founded by former US Secretary of Energy Ernest J. Moniz, reached similar conclusions. In a 2019 report on the pathways for achieving deep decarbonization in California, EFI found that meeting California’s environmental goals will require a range of clean energy pathways, including clean fuels like renewable natural gas (RNG), hydrogen and biofuels. “Once we realized what was at stake—the lack of affordable energy options, the loss of local control, and the negative impacts to businesses and residents who rely on natural gas—we knew we had to act. When it comes to energy, our residents deserve choice,” said La Habra City Councilman Tim Shaw. “The cost of living in Southern California is already too expensive for most of the families I represent,” said South Gate Mayor Belen Bernal. “Switching to electricity-only would mean higher utility bills that people just can’t afford. Maintaining a balanced approach is important for my community.” “The simple process of converting our organic wastes, yard trimmings, and food waste into a recycled natural gas can significantly reduce our overall carbon emissions, and yet, the energy discussion is often dominated by the idea of total electrification,” said Temecula Councilmember Matt Rahn. “As we plan for California’s energy future, we must realize that electrification is not the only solution, and certainly not something that everyone can afford.” “Mandating a move to a singular utility model loses sight of the financial burden it will create in many Californians’ homes,” said Upland City Councilmember Ricky Felix. “It would also be irresponsible to not have different types of utilities available, especially in emergency situations which would put residents at risk.” “People should have the choice of what energy source they use—and many prefer natural gas because it’s more affordable,” said Port Hueneme Mayor Will Berg. “In addition, to keep energy reliable and affordable it makes sense to not put all your eggs in one basket.”

HILLTOP COFFEE KITCHEN INGLEWOOD’S LATEST DOWNTOWN ESTABLISHMENT
By Francis Taylor, Senior Writer
Hilltop Coffee Kitchen, an upscale café for the local community, recently celebrated their grand opening at the corner of LaBrea and Regent Street in
Downtown Inglewood. The well-appointed restaurant offers locally roasted gourmet coffee, teas, fresh juices with all-day breakfast and lunch, along with a healthy serving of good vibes with courteous, cheerful
and professional staff members. Inglewood native Yonnie Hagos, and his partner Ajay Relan have an established and successful café in the City of Los Angeles and they wanted to be a part of the exciting economic development that is taking place in the City of Inglewood. They decided to open their second Café in the heart of Downtown Inglewood, at the premiere location across the street from the recently announced mixed-use development project. The owners are committed to a minimum 50 percent hiring rate for Inglewood residents and paying their employees above the minimum wage. The current complement is 20 staff members. The owners derived the name of their café - Hilltop Coffee Kitchen, recognizing that for centuries, the mountaintop has been a touchstone for dreamers and doers. “Each and every day we wake up to pursue our own goals. We encounter and overcome any obstacles that may stand in our way. In short, we’re all here – climbing our very own hilltops. Before you begin your daily journey, we invite you to come join us and grab some coffee for the climb.” Hilltop Coffee Kitchen offers a complete breakfast and lunch menu
with a wide range of Ethiopian coffees and teas. They are awaiting their alcohol permit will be offering beer and wine. In addition to the downstairs ordering and eating area, the café features an open mezzanine above that is an ideal space for more quiet conversations, laptop usage, newspaper and magazine reading, etc. Of course, wi-fi connectivity is available. “We are proud to be among the newest members of the Inglewood family and we invite the entire community to stop by,” Hagos said.
