Governor Gavin Newsom signed one of the strongest use-offorce laws in the nation Monday that permits police officers to use deadly force when “necessary” instead of “when reasonable.” He was surrounded by family members of people killed by police throughout the state. The January 1, 2020 law also allows prosecutors to consider the actions of the officer leading up to any shooting and prohibits firing on fleeing felons unless they pose an immediate danger. “For 400 years, people of color have often had a different kind of justice in this nation. After 400 years of demonstrating our commitment and humanity to this nation, we deserve fairness and justice,” says the law’s author, San Diego Assemblywoman Shirley Weber. The law requires officers to use other techniques to address threats instead of using deadly force when safe to do so, and encourages law enforcement to train on and use de-escalation techniques like verbal persuasion and other crisis intervention methods. “This is a time for healing, progress and looking forward, ”said Governor Newsom. “The bill goes to the heart of some of our most sacred principles, in which force should be ex-

The thousands of documented lies he has told since he emerged on the political scene and as president have been astonishing. The tariffs he has established, intended to make America great again, have done nothing to make our country better and will, in fact, cost Americans a bundle. The tariffs imposed by Trump are expected to cost American households up to $1,000 per year when the next round goes into effect on September 1, according to a new note by J.P. Morgan. According to the bank’s analysts, the
cost of the U.S.-China trade war borne by consumers is likely to rise from around $600 per year — based on the first two “phases” of the tariffs on Chinese imports — to around $1,000, based on the third round of tariffs. That $1,000 figure assumes a 10% tariff on about $112 billion of Chinese imports, which Trump announced will begin next month. While he had initially proposed 10% tariffs on $300 billion worth of Chinese goods, he later scaled it back to exclude certain consumer products like cell phones, laptops, and toys. If the tariff increase to 25 percent, as Trump has threatened, the cost to consumers would rise to $1,500 per year, J.P. Mor-

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Hip Hop Icon, Jay Z and his entertainment company, Roc Nation announced a new business alliance with the NFL last week and the black community is in rage. Last year, in support of Colin Kaepernick, Jay Z encouraged several Hip Hop artists to refuse the NFL’s invitation to perform for the Super Bowl’s half time show, including one of the biggest artists on his roster, Pop Star, Rihanna. Kaepernick is a former American football quarterback known

We don’t know J’s plans but would like to think that he is making this move as a set up to eventually win the game. It’s too early to decipher as of right now. The very next day after the news conference, there were rumors circulating on Social Media that Jay Z was in talks with the NFL to become part owner of a team. Perhaps, he has plans to hire Kaep himself. We don’t know. Only time will tell.

Queen Latifah took to twitter to announce she will play Ursula in ABC’s live production version of the Little Mermaid. For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past three
decades, Queen Latifah is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, actress, and producer. She has long been considered one of hip-hop’s pioneer feminists. Ursula is the main antagonist of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. She is a villainous sea witch, with a half-woman, halfoctopus physique. In the story of The Little Mermaid, Princess Ariel trades her voice to Ursula in exchange for human legs in order to be able to walk with humans. Of course #Black Twitter went nuts in celebration and support. We hoped she’d be sharing the screen with Halle Bailey who we learned earlier this year was casted as Ariel in Disney’s live adaptation of the movie. Social Media exploded with mixed feelings at the extraordinarily brilliant decision Disney made casting a woman of color in the classic film and of course, we are totally
here for it. Before Disney jumps head first into production of the live-action movie, it appears they are doing a trial run with this Live Show. I’m sure they will both be received very well. Queen Latifah, along with “Moana” actress, Auli’i Cravalho, starring as Ariel in ABC’s Live ‘The Little Mermaid’ is a huge deal. The music will be from the original cartoon film as well as the Tony Award-winning Broadway show. This is a major win for both Queens and also a win for The Culture. The production is currently scheduled to air Nov. 5th and will also star Dancehall Legend, Shaggy as Sebastian. Melissa McCarthy says she loves Queen Latifah and excitingly praised the Casting for The Little Mermaid Live Production Show as she is reportedly taking on the role for Disney’s much-anticipated liveaction The Little Mermaid movie. Queen Latifah’s work in music has earned her a Grammy Award and sales of over two million records. Her work in film and television have earned her an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, two NAACP Image Awards, and an Academy Award nomination. In 2006, she received a star on Hollywood’s Walk Of Fame. We are looking forward to celebrating Queen Latifah’s portrayal of Ursula in The Little Mermaid Live, in addition to all of the magic of both productions.

The legislation is called the “Stephon Clark Law,” named after the unarmed African-American man who was shot by police in his backyard in Sacramento last year.
