California Sen. Kamala Harris sent a stern letter to the Department of Justice raising questions about a hot and under-staffed federal prison in the San Joaquin Valley with a chronically broken air conditioning system. “As you know, staffing shortages place inmates and staff alike at greater risk of harm. These shortages must be taken seriously and redressed as quickly as possible,” Harris wrote on July 9. Now Harris is considering other actions she can take to get answers about Federal Correctional Institution Mendota, which is undergoing its third consecutive summer with a faulty cooling system. toiaBrown, highlighting the unfortunate circumstances that were involved with her case. She was eventually granted clemency by then Tennessee Governor, Bill Haslam in January 2019. Cyntoia, who at the age of 16 was sex trafficked by a pimp named, “Cut Throat” and drugged and raped repeatedly for days until she was purchased by a 43 year old pedophile who took her home to use her for his own personal sex toy. She ended up finding the courage to fight back and shot him dead. At 16-years-old, she was tried as an adult and convicted of first-degree murder, first-degree felony murder and aggra-

vated robbery, and given a life sentence. She should have never been imprisoned in the first place, but she walked out of the Tennessee Prison for Women Wednesday morning to be with her family. Cyntoia earned her associates and Bachelors degree while she was in prison and is looking forward to the next phase of her life that she has been fighting for the entire duration of her prison stint.

In a statement following her release, she says she has plans to use her experiences to help other women and girls suffering abuse and exploitation. Should she follow through with this (which only makes sense), her prison sentence will not be in vain. This is a direct result of the power of people coming together and fighting for justice. She is a hero and we look forward to seeing her give back in all the ways she wants to. I pray every soul she encounters receives her with open arms and helps her through her journey adapting back in to the world and becoming a productive member of society. Welcome home, Cyntoia.

For all age groups, deaths on the road reached 40,000 last year, down 1% from 2016, according to the National Safety Council. Some 20,360 children and teenagers died in the U.S. in 2016 and 60% of those fatalities were preventable injuries, according new study published in the peer-reviewed New England Journal of Medicine. The No. 1 cause: Motor vehicle accidents, which claimed the lives of more than 4,000 teenagers and children. Firearm deaths were the No. 2 cause of death among youth, claiming the lives of more than 3,140 children and teens in 2016. That equates to approximately eight children dying per day due to preventable deaths related to firearms. The rate of firearm-related death for those aged 1 to 19 years has stayed around the same for nearly the past two decades, although that rate is still more than 36 times as high as the average rate across 12 other high-income countries. Cancer was the No. 3 cause of death and accounted for 1,853 deaths of those ages 1 to 19, although its death rate has dropped over the last 17 years, and suffocation, mainly suicides by hanging and other means was No. 4. Suicide, however, is on the rise. Those causes were followed by drowning, drug overdoses/poisonings and birth defects, each with just under 1,000 deaths in each of those categories.

However, after two mass shootings over the weekend that left more than 30 people dead in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, Obama sounded off, without mentioning any names. Obama called for stricter gun control laws in a Monday statement posted on Twitter. “We are not helpless here, and until all of us stand up and insist on holding public officials accountable for changing our gun laws, these tragedies will keep happening,” he wrote. Obama said the El Paso shooting followed a “dangerous trend” of violence motivated by racist ideologies. He compared white supremacist websites to terrorist groups like ISIS and called on law enforcement and internet platforms to reduce the influence of hate groups. The El Paso shooting is being investigated as a possible hate crime after an anti-immigrant “manifesto” posted online was connected to the alleged gunman. Posts on 8chan, an online messaging board used by right-wing extremists, have also been connected to the alleged gunman. Law enforcement officials said on Saturday that the suspect told them he wanted to shoot as many Mexicans as possible. Obama also called on Americans

President Trump is known for anti-immigrant rhetoric, repeatedly referring to a migrant caravan at the U.S.-Mexico border as an “invasion.” Obama noted that hateful rhetoric and language that demonizes others isn’t new but has been at the “root of most human tragedy.” “It has no place in our politics and our public life,” he wrote. “And it’s time for the overwhelming majority of Americans of goodwill, of every race and faith and political party, to say as much — clearly and unequivocally.” Obama has said that his inability to strengthen gun laws was the “biggest frustration” of his presidency. He was often moved to tears when he addressed the country after a mass shooting. In 2017, he said the “toughest day” of his tenure was when he met with the families of the victims of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in 2012. In his inimitable style, Obama’s words calling for stronger gun laws were eloquent and presidential, reminding all of us of what is was like to have a president of all Americans, not just the ones who looked like him. I continue to stand with Barack Obama.

Council member Autumn Burke’s 5th annual Health and Wellness fair that took place this past Saturday at Crozier Middle School was loads of fun for kids and parents alike. Families stood in a line wrapped around the block to take advantage of the Back-to-School Health and Wellness Fair that was open to all students regardless of their school district. Attendees enjoyed music and entertainment, food, face painting, and games, all free of charge. They got the children moving with physical activities, making it another great family-fun filled day in Inglewood. There was an open discussion on current legislation and valuable issues concerning the community for the parents. In addition to the free backpack and school supplies giveaway, there were free dental, hearing, eye, and diabetes check ups for the kids. As children stood in line with their parents to receive free backpacks loaded with school supplies, some were chatty about going back to school, some chatted about the pro basketball players from the Inglewood area as they discuss why and also who should be traded to the Clippers to make a perfect All Star team. I didn’t eat anything that was really life changing at this event but it was a good way to hang out with friends, learn more about some local businesses, and leave feeling full, entertained, and satisfied. Although a little overpriced, the food was delicious, drinks were great, and the desserts were awesome per usual. I tried alligator on a stick and I’ve never tried that in all my life. It was really good. Mayor Butts was on active duty, posing with kids and families. I can’t forget the entertainment portion. Which in my opinion was the best part of the festival. The smooth operator Big Daddy Kane really did his thing, the melodic song stylings of Kindred The Family Soul set the tone, and Hip Hop royalty Dana Dane and many other artists hit the stage to show out. Also, they included a special appearance from the one and only Stevie Wonder, who really set it off! Inglewood is growing and so are the events around the city. I’m happy to be here and witness its evolution first hand. I think if you’ve never been - it’s worthwhile to attend this event next year if you’re around the area! And even if you’re not, I promise you that traveling here will not be a waste of your time.

INGLEWOOD TODAY was present when the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers scrimmaged at a joint practice at the Jack Hammett Sports Complex in Costa Mesa on Thursday, August 1, 2019. The morning event, which was staged adjacent to the

Orange County Fairgrounds, was an extraordinary family event where adults could enjoy the scrimmage while the young people could practice every skill that is required of an NFL player. Joint practice sessions like this one have become a popular departure from the old-school grind of training camp for many NFL teams, giving coaches a chance to evaluate players against real competition, and players a chance to work against someone other than their teammates. The Chargers and Rams will hold a similar practice session Saturday at the Rams’ training camp facility at UC Irvine. The Rams will visit Napa later this month and hold joint workouts with the Oakland Raiders. “It breaks up the monotony of camp,” Rams safety Eric Weddle said. “It makes you play true and honest. You get used to going against your own guys. You can anticipate certain things, certain route combinations, certain plays. You get out here and we treat this like a game. “Coach puts the emphasis of going all out. We try to do 100 percent on every play, but especially right now, because a lot of us won’t play in the preseason, so we treat this like a game atmosphere. You know when you make the play and you know when you don’t and your teammates know that too, so we take this very serious. We want to be a great defense and a great team and it starts, obviously the four days before this and then coming out here and going against the Chargers.” Rams coach Sean McVay came away from Thursday’s session pleased with what he saw. “Well, I think, it was two good teams going at it,” he said. “A lot of respect for one another and I thought we were able to get a lot out of the day. A lot of different situations that we hit, kind of trying to bounce around a little bit. Can’t wait to go back and look at this film. Anytime that you get a chance to practice against an excellent football team, really in all three phases, it’s really good for us.”

The council approved additional funding for the City of Inglewood Homebuyer Assistance Program. The The City of Inglewood held a “housing lottery” last week, during the regular city council meeting and the lottery drawing wasn’t listed on the regular city council agenda. Ten individuals, including a city employee, were selected to receive up to $350,000 towards the purchase of a home, not to exceed $600,000 in price. At the last minute, Mayor James Butts asked to extend funding to include (10) individuals out of the 46 that were eligible because initially, only (5) individuals were to be selected. The homebuyer assistance program was initially approved August 21, 2018 and was to have no impact to the General Fund as the program would be funded with $2 million dollars from Redevelopment Housing Bond Funds. This week’s staff report, to establish $3.75 million dollars in funding, to accommodate the additional (5) families, will come from the city’s

Applicants must have been enrolled in an eight-hour homebuyer education class to have been eligible to submit an application for the lottery. The zero-interest loan, backed by the housing au-

thority, has no monthly payments as long as you live in the home. It does, however, come with 45 years of conditions. If the resident sells the home before the 45-year mortgage is up, he or she would have to pay back all or a portion of the loan before profiting from the sale, based upon a prorated repayment schedule. After 45 years, the loan is forgiven. It may seem like a lot but the opportunity given here is something that is unheard of and truly a blessing from above. “The way we positioned this program was to make it available for people to actually purchase a home,” says councilman Morales. “The prices of homes are going up so high that a small second loan would not work. This program is set to be successful, with that we’re going to impact people’s lives. It may be less families that we impact but they are going to truly be able to be homeowners at this point. It’s something that we’re real proud of.” Under program eligibility guidelines, lottery winners have six months to purchase a home. I don’t know about you but I am looking to enroll in the next eight-hour homebuyer education class just in case. Should this opportunity arise again, there will be nothing standing in the way of me receiving my blessing. except my number not being called in the draw. The union that represents correctional officers there says guards must pull 16-hour shifts — multiple times per week — to staff the prison adequately. Employees have also complained about leaks and toxic mold within the prison. It’s struggling with a spotty air-conditioning system despite expensive repairs two years ago. Union leaders at the prison say it’s an unsafe working environment for officers. Harris’ letter, sent to Bureau of Prisons Acting Director Hugh Hurwitz, recounts media reports of the issues and demands answers on the recommended number of staff, how many employees the prison currently has, a plan to increase staffing and the status of and plan to fix the air conditioning. She gave a deadline of July 17. By the beginning of August, she had not received a response. “Sen. Harris will continue to press for answers to these important questions,” Harris spokesman Chris Harris said. “We are weighing options to determine the next step.” The Bureau of Prisons declined

Aaron McGolthin, leader of the correctional officers’ union at Mendota, said prison executives have been trying to address employees’ complaints, particularly since lawmakers have gotten involved. “Since we’ve seen action on the legislative side, we have seen positive movement,” McGlothin said. “But the biggest issue we have is we can’t just wave a magic wand and have people show up, because the process just takes so much time.”
