BILL COSBY’S FATE: IN THE JURY’S HANDS By Eric Levenson and Aaron Cooper, CNN
The jury in Bill Cosby’s indecent assault trial asked a question Wednesday that goes to the heart of the case against the former TV icon: “What is the legal definition of consent?” The question came around 1 p.m., yesterday, less than two hours after the 12-person jury began deliberating the
case. Cosby is on trial for three counts of aggravated indecent assault. Montgomery County court Judge Steven O’Neill told the jurors that he could not answer the question. “The jury will decide what consent means to them,” he said. The case against Cosby centers on testimony from Andrea Constand, a former employee with Temple University women’s basketball team. She testified that Cosby, a powerful trustee at Temple, drugged her and sexually assaulted her when she visited his home to ask for career advice in a Philadelphia suburb in January 2004. Cosby’s defense team has argued that
their interaction was consensual. Constand is a con artist, they argued, who wanted a piece of Cosby’s fortune. The case is the first celebrity sexual assault trial since the #MeToo movement began last fall, and as such, it represents a test of how the cultural movement will translate into a courtroom arena. In closing arguments, defense attorney Kathleen Bliss positioned Cosby’s legal team as standing up against “witch hunts, lynchings (and) McCarthyism.” Last year, a different jury could not come to a unanimous verdict on any of these three charges for Cosby, leading Judge O’Neill to declare a mistrial. The Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, jury is made up of seven men and five women and they have been sequestered in a hotel during the trial’s two weeks of testimony. One man and one woman are African American, and the rest appear to be white. Cosby, 80, faces up to 10 years in prison on each count if convicted. The case has little forensic evidence and has largely consisted of the “he saidshe said” arguments so common to sex-
ual assault cases. Constand testified that Cosby offered her wine and three blue pills, saying, “these are your friends, they will take the edge off.” She began to slur her words and feel woozy, she testified, and then became unable to move. What we’ve learned as Bill Cosby’s trial pushes to its finale “The next thing I recall is, um, I was kind of jolted awake, and felt Mr. Cosby on the couch beside me, behind me, and my vagina was being penetrated quite forcefully,” Constand testified. “I felt my breasts being touched, and he took my hand and placed my hand on his penis and masturbated himself with my hand. And I was not able to do a thing to fight back.” Cosby did not testify in his own defense during the trial, but he said in a 2005-2006 civil deposition with Constand that their sexual activity was consensual. His defense attorneys have sharply criticized Constand in an attempt to under-

GENTRIFICATION? HERE COMES THE NEIGHBORHOOD By Francis Taylor, Assistant Editor
With the exciting construction of the new Los Angeles Rams stadium and development emerging from underground on Prairie Ave., the anticipation of the Los Angeles Clippers’ new basketball arena, Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts’ seizing every opportunity to espouse
the quality living and visionary leadership he and his city council colleagues are delivering that contributes to Inglewood’s economic growth and viability, to list only a few examples of the city’s rapid transformation, many residents are fearful that gentrification may displace them while more optimistic residents are more welcoming. Critics site the alleged use of city funds to enrich the wealthy team owners. They cite the dramatic increase in property values and rents. They question the number of local residents that are involved in the new construction and they predict impending traffic gridlock when the developments are completed. At the same time, many residents are concerned that the process of renovating and improving Inglewood will have the affect of conforming the city to middleclass taste. With 59,4 percent of the people in Inglewood living in rental hous-
ing units and 22.4 percent of the population living below the federal poverty line, it is reasonable that they are concerned about Inglewood’s move to a more middle class community. In the 1960’s white flight occurred in the more desirable Inglewood neighborhoods and over the years, the city was well known for its majority black population. Also, during more recent years, Hispanics have emerged as the dominant minority group in Inglewood. A recent report indicated that the population of Inglewood is 50.3 percent Hispanic, 41.9 percent black and 3.68 percent white. The median price of a home in In-

glewood is sometimes as much as 50 percent less than the value of homes in non-minority dominant areas like Westchester, Venice, Santa Monica and others. This condition is likely to force wellheeled, home-buying bargain hunters, who wish to enjoy Inglewood’s proximity to freeways, the airport and the ocean, to seriously consider a move into Inglewood. Rental incomes in Inglewood, like those in neighboring communities, and throughout the state for that matter, are climbing rapidly. An Inglewood apartment owner reported that rent for a

I am a maniacal recycler, but I don’t expect everyone to be like me. However, there are lots of things we can all do to help the environment beyond filling our blue recycle can with glass and plastic bottles, and aluminum cans. There’s so much more that can be recycled like paper; newspaper and all that junk mail we receive. There’s more, so look into it if you are so inclined, but if recycling everything you come across isn’t your thing, consider one or more of these things to help do your part. Instead of buying cases of bottled water, get yourself a swanky re-usable water bottle in your favorite color or in a pattern you love. The reason you buy water by the case is purity, so consider switching to Kangen or alkaline water (a healthier alternative), or keeping a Brita water filter pitcher in the fridge for fill-ups. Only 1 in 5 plastic water bottles gets recycled and that equates to approximately 2 million tons of them in the landfill each year. Got the java habit bad? Here again is the opportunity to invest in a mug or lidded cup to use over and over. 60 billion paper cups wind up in landfills per year and take about 20 years to decompose. A reusable grocery or shopping bag is a no-brainer these days and you can never
have too many. I have tons of them and they live in my back seat so I can see them and remember to grab a couple when I head for Ralphs. What’s more, they are free or extremely cost effective at 99 cents. Of course, you could purchase one that is chichi. Like me, I’m sure you’ll discover a million uses for these bags. This is a new one on me – dryer balls. Parachute Wool Dryer Balls is the brand I know of. My first thought is they are a bit pricy at $19 per set of three, but when I considered they last for approximately 1000 cycles and cut
drying time by up to 50% by wicking moisture away, I decided there just might be something to them. Dryer sheets will definitely cost the same and not dry as many loads. Natural cleaning products have finally come into their own. Seventh Generation (Have you seen the ads on TV?) offers a variety of eco-friendly products for everyday needs: paper towels, dishwashing liquid, disinfectant spray, and feminine care products. Check Amazon.com to find them. One last thing that I care deeply about and hope you will help me handle: those plastic rings that hold a 6-pack of sodas. They are dangerous for birds and small animals. They can get their heads and bodies stuck in them. Please cut them up so that no holes are left before you recycle this plastic.

The recently amended GOP tax bill has brought about a lot of major changes in the United States’ individual tax laws in the 2018 tax year. One of the significant changes is in the Child Tax Credit that would greatly affect parents and guardians with children below 17 years old. One of the changes made was the amount of tax credit that can be claimed per qualifying child. From $1,000, the newly reformed bill doubled the amount to $2,000. This means if you have one child, the tax credit you will get is $2,000, if you have two children, $4,000, and so on. The tax credit, which is different from tax deduction that reduces the income subject to tax, will be deducted from the tax bill dollar-for-dollar. More of this tax credit has also been made refundable. Unlike before, now it has more refundable credits of up to $1,400 that can be claimed even if the taxpayer ends up with no liability at all. For instance, if you have $1,000 calculated tax for the year and you have $1,400 refundable credits, you can reduce your tax bill to zero and still get that extra $400. This would very much benefit especially low-income Americans. Another notable change is the adjustment of income qualification. In the past tax year, the credit benefits mostly
low- to middle-income households. But with the reformed bill, there was an increase in the phase-out thresholds that makes the credit available to more thresholds. For example, for those married filing jointly, the maximum AGI for full credit is $400,000 and the credit gets removed from an AGI over $440,000. Moreover, for those who are single, filing head of household, and married filing separately the maximum AGI for full credit is $200,000 and the credit gets removed from an AGI over $240,000. There will also be a $500 nonrefundable family credit for every other dependent. These dependents might be the aging parents or children 17 years old or above who still receive your support. Although the aforementioned changes in the Child Tax Credit seem good, it does not change the fact that taxpayers are still losing the personal exemption. The increase in the deductions does not even equal the loss of taxpayer’s personal exemption. But when it comes to the number of dependents, the new higher child tax credit would be an advantage. For more information about tax credits, visit the official IRS web site at www.irs.gov/credits-deductions-for-individuals.

mine her credibility. They argued she was a “con artist” and a liar who was obsessed with Cosby’s fame and money. “You’re going to be saying to yourself, ‘What does she want from Bill Cosby?’ and you already know. Money, money and lots more money,” Mesereau said in opening statements. “She was madly in love with his fame and money.” In addition, five other women individually testified that Cosby drugged and assaulted them in previous incidents. Prosecutors said these “prior bad acts” witnesses proved that Cosby’s actions toward Constand were part of a pattern of behavior and were not a one-time mistake.

EARTH DAY JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018 CELEBRATED INGLEWOOD: QUALITY LIVING & VISIONARY LEADERSHIP By Francis Taylor, Assistant Editor At the weekly City Council Meeting the members swiftly discharged routine city business, while the bulk of the public comments and the mayor and council remarks focused on the tremendous success of the City of Inglewood’s Earth Day Jazz Festival 2018, with the featured theme of ‘Celebrate Inglewood: Quality Living and Visionary Leadership.’ Shortly after the festival got underway, on the south lawn of City Hall, council members George Dotson, Alex Padilla, and Ralph Franklin joined Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts on the concert stage. In keeping with the festival’s theme, Mayor Butts provided an overview of he leadership he and his council members have executed and have in the planning
and implementation stages to make Inglewood second-to-none when it comes to the quality of living, the availability of a broad range of entertainment options, mixed-use and commercial development, jobs, and declining crime rates, to name only a few. The Festival featured not only top-tier entertainment, for the thousands who packed the grassy area with blankets and lawn chairs, but also a variety of exhibitors involved in protecting our resources, living a healthier and happier life and saving the planet. Musical entertainment was provided by Rose Royce, Loose Ends featuring Jane Eugene, DW3, Elaine Gibbs and the Nu-Soul Band, Stephen Hines Band and Phillip Lauth. Environmental

By Steve Finley For the first time in many years UCLA and USC will have two players taken in the top two or three spots in the National Football League draft today (Thursday). USC’s Sam Darnold and UCLA’s Josh Rosen are two of the top quarterbacks in the draft. No one can predict what the teams will do but if the draft experts are correct Darnold will be the No. 1 pick and will go to the Cleveland Browns. The Browns need a franchise quarterback that is smart, durable and one that can lead them out of cellar. The Browns have been one of the worst NFL teams for a long time and Darnold maybe the answer to their problems. At USC Darnold made some mistakes but he showed he can beat you with is arm and feet. In the 2017 Rose bowl game against Penn State he made some of the most spectacular plays ever seen on a college football field. Can he do that in the NFL, only time will tell? Rosen is scheduled to go to the New York Giants at No. 2 or to the New York Jets at No. 3. The problem with Rosen is he maybe too smart for his own good. He has made several mistakes on social media and on campus at UCLA that has made him a target. His critics say because he comes from well-todo family, his father is a doctor; he may not have the motivation to be a great NFL quarterback. No one questions his skill level. He was the best
NFL ready signal caller three years ago when he threw is first pass for UCLA in the Rose Bowl. The pass was a 50 yard bomb that was right on the money but the receiver dropped the ball. That leads into the problems he had at UCLA. His receivers dropped a lot of passes and his offensive line failed to protect him. He got hit more time than an opponent in a Ali fight. All signs point to Rosen succeeding in the NFL if his receivers hold on to the ball and if his offensive line and protects him. Another local college player from USC is scheduled to be picked in the first two rounds. Running back Ronald Jones II could go in the first round. Jones has the combination of speed, power and moves that NFL teams like. As a freshman he ran for 987 yards. His sophomore season he gained 1,082 yards and as a junior he ran for 1,557 yards. The draft will take place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas beginning at 5 p.m. Rounds 2-3 will be Friday and rounds 4-7 will take

COUNCILMEMBER ENGLANDER CALLS FOR
“MARIJUANA AMNESTY BOXES” AT LAX
Inglewood Wire Service Los Angeles Councilmember Mitchell Englander will introduce legislation calling for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to install marijuana amnesty boxes so that passengers may surrender prohibited items before air travel. As of January 1, 2018, under California law, adults 21 and older can use, purchase, possess, and grow a certain amount of cannabis for recreational use. Although possession is legal in the City of Los Angeles, it remains illegal in any amount under federal law which has jurisdiction over air travel. “We want to make sure that residents and visitors to Los Angeles can enjoy a bummer-free experience at our airport,” Councilmember Englander said. “And while it is not encouraged that travelers have marijuana on their person when they arrive at LAX, this motion provides an easy remedy for the occasions when this does occur so that flyers can stay on the right side of the law. This legislation sends the message: surrender your supply before you fly.” LAX services over 84 million travelers each year. Those that mistakenly carry with them any
amount of cannabis can be subject to a verbal warning, fine, or arrest. To mitigate the chance of a traveler being cited or arrested for possession of cannabis, several airports across the nation have installed “amnesty boxes” which allow individuals the opportunity to surrender cannabis without punishment before boarding flights. With California the latest state to legalize the recreational use of marijuana, it is important to take necessary steps to inform and protect law abiding citizens by installing amnesty boxes at LAX.

Butts joined 20 members of the Los Angeles Conservation Corps and 20 volunteers from the Los Angeles Rams to plant 25 trees in the City of Inglewood. Mayor Butts

Adjacent to the stadium and performance venue, the project anticipates more than 1.5 million square feet of retail and office space, 1,500 residences, a hotel and more than 20 acres of parks. The long-term plans offer the possibility of developing additional phases over time.

Southern California’s median home price jumped 8.4 percent in March from a year earlier, setting a new all-time high of $519,000. T h e rise is largely attributable to an increase in jobs, historically low mortgage rates and a shortage of homes or sale. neighborhood is coming to Inglewood. Existing Inglewood residents must face the reality that the ‘City of Champions,’ as it was formerly known, is the last bastion of Westside affordability and the only difference between Inglewood and Westchester, for example is 90301 and 90045 – the zip code, and of course the cost of housing. It is therefore this writer’s position that the facts support the perception that ‘here comes the neighborhood, instead of the more familiar phrase, ‘there goes the neighborhood.
