WINERIES

CHIANTI CLASSICO

Borgo San Felice is nestled in the heart of the Chianti Classico wine region, one of the most beautiful regions in the world with hilltop medieval hamlets and valleys covered in vines like a rolling carpet.

Discover the wineries we selected for you, hidden in the birthplace of the Chianti.

CHIANTI CLASSICO

Castello di Brolio – Ricasoli 1141

SP484 18, 53013 Gaiole in Chianti (SI)

With its gentle hills, velvety valleys and thick woodlands of oaks and chestnuts, the 1,200 hectares of property include almost 240 hectares of vineyards and 26 of olive groves. This creates a continuous succession of colors and hues around the Brolio Castle, which is located within the town limits of Gaiole in Chianti. Since 1993, Baron Francesco Ricasoli has been guiding this central Tuscan company in innovative challenges. This has been done with the deepest respect for his renowned ancestors who have made this territory great, Bettino Ricasoli first and foremost.

✻ Recommended by the Be San Felice Guide:

Sunset Tour

Experience a magical evening in Brolio. Starting with a guided tour of Brolio Castle, the gardens and the Ricasoli Collection under the golden light of the sunset. CHIANTI CLASSICO

Castello di Ama

Località Ama in Chianti, 53013 Gaiole in Chianti (SI)

About 75 hectares under vine, around the village of Ama. The vineyards lie between 420 and 527 metres above sea level and extend across four valleys referred to by their traditional names of Bellavista, San Lorenzo, La Casuccia and Montebuoni. Located in a beautiful medieval hilltop town just north of Siena in Chianti , Castello di Ama feels like an oldfashioned fairytale one that also happens to be a destination for contemporary art. Lush vineyards produce award-winning wine; gardens are a backdrop to 14 site-specific works and installations by 13 international artists.

✻ Recommended by the Be San Felice Guide:

The Ark of Vintages Tour

The title takes its name from the building home to their historic vintages: the 'Arca'. At the end of the guided tour of the company spaces, lasting about 1 hour, you will participate in the tasting of a selection of the Great Wines. Reservations required.

CHIANTI CLASSICO

Castello di Meleto

CCXH+J7, Località Castello di Meleto, 53013 Gaiole In Chianti (SI)

Castello di Meleto is a complex and fascinating reality where history, wine, and tourism intertwine. Located in Gaiole in Chianti, the history of Castello di Meleto is quite unique, and it has passed through different eras over the centuries. Its connection with wine began in the 11th century with the Benedictine monks, but it was in 1256 that the first written mention of its name appeared. Since then, the external appearance of the castle has remained almost unchanged.

✻ Recommended by the Be San Felice Guide:

Castle tour with wine tasting paired with a light lunch

Guided tour through the vineyards, Big Bench, and aromatic garden. Explore the noble rooms, the 18th-century theater, the historic cellars, and the Vinsantaia. End with a tasting of 3 wines and our own olive oil production. Reservations required.

CHIANTI CLASSICO

Fèlsina – Castelnuovo Berardenga

Via del Chianti 101, 53019 Castelnuovo Berardenga (SI)

As soon as you set foot in this winery, you feel its hospitality, along with their outstanding commitment to sustainability. The Romans also recognized it as a place blessed by nature, transforming Fèlsina into a post station, and a place to rest, refresh oneself and meet others along an important road. Still, the spirit remains the same: a place to meet others and take refreshment, then as it is today. Fèlsina is a “frontier land” nestled between the Chianti Classico and Crete Senesi areas, in the direction of Montalcino. Their staff will guide you through the world of Fèlsina, telling you the history of the winery and of the Poggiali family. You will be brought into the stunning historical cellar, where you can savour a fascinating history as you wander among the huge oak ovals, the barrels, and the small casks of fermenting Vin Santo.

✻ Recommended by the Be San Felice Guide:

Classic Tour with Charcuterie platter

Visit to the historical cellar, tasting of four wines, charcuterie and local cheese paired with tasting. Reservations required.

CHIANTI

CLASSICO

Tenuta Arceno – Castelnuovo Berardenga

53010 Localita Arceno, 53019 San Gusmé (SI)

Tenuta di Arceno is an ancient Tuscan estate with a diverse portfolio of the highest quality wines across two classification levels – three wines centered on the native Sangiovese grape in the Chianti Classico DOCG collection; and three wines celebrating the estate’s international varieties under the Toscana IGT designation. The estate is situated at the southernmost-edge of Chianti Classico in the butterfly-shaped commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, closest in proximity to Siena and rightfully referred to as ‘the most Senese Chianti Classico.’ It’s home to other world-renowned producers and stylistically distinct from counterparts to the north.

✻ Recommended by the Be San Felice Guide:

“Le

Curve” tasting

Private tasting of our Chianti Classico Annata, Riserva and Gran Selezione plus two Toscana IGT wines in the tasting room or in the garden; accompanied by typical cold cuts and cheese, seasonal vegetables pinzimonio, farro salad or panzanella salad (or ribollita soup in cold season), bread with Chianti Classico DOP olive oil. Reservations required.

CHIANTI CLASSICO

Castello di Fonterutoli – Mazzei

The true link between the past and the future, the Fonterutoli winery dominates the estate and farm slopes looking to Siena from a vantage point, but its heart is beating within. A modern winery but at the same time the owner of centuries-old knowledge, as only a family member could design: in fact, Agnese Mazzei is the designer of the innovative project with low environmental impact, where aesthetics meet functionality.

✻ Recommended by the Be San Felice Guide:

Private VIP Tour

An experience at the center of the Mazzei World. The path consists in a guided tour of the Author’s Cellar with tasting of five wines of your choice (up to three Crus of the Estate, including Siepi, plus other two references also coming from the estates of Zisola and Belguardo). All this can take place informally, in the Wine Shop of the cellar, or comfortably seated in one of the exclusive tasting rooms. Reservations required.

Via Ottone III di Sassonia n. 5 Loc, 53011 Fonterutoli (SI)

San Felice also expands in the Montalcino area with the Campogiovanni estate. Located on the southern slope of the Montalcino, near San Angelo in Colle. In addition to 19 hectares of variety-specific vineyards (14 of each registered at Brunello), there are 18 hectares of olive trees, woods for an overall total of 65 hectares.

The Campogiovanni range, beyond Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, includes also a single-vineyard Riserva, "il Quercione", made with grapes selected from the vineyard of the same name.

MONTEPULCIANO

Podere Le Ripi – Montalcino

53024 Montalcino (SI)

Podere le Ripi is known as a Brunello winery, but in reality it is a small “Organismo Agricolo”. Instead of conceiving a farm only as its land and its produce, the Organismo Agricolo communicates the whole picture: its soil, plants, animals, people, insects, microorganisms. Podere le Ripi has been growing according to biodynamic farming principles for over 10 years. You’ll be visiting the farm from the vineyards to the wine cellar, ending in their tasting room. Their people are not touring guides, but wine experts, winemakers, cellar masters, and agronomists all directly involved in the common realization of their sustainable project. Do not forget to visit their interesting biodynamic vegetable garden and to meet their farm animals.

VAL D’ORCIA: MONTALCINO

& MONTEPULCIANO

Tenuta Casanova di Neri – Montalcino

Podere Fiesole, 53024 Montalcino (SI)

One of the most respected wineries in Montalcino, if not Italy. This family-run cellar owes its success to a solid track record of powerful, luxuriant Brunellos and the exclusive crus, Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto. The wines of Casanova di Neri are renowned for their elegant, modern style and enjoy a steady flow of accolades from specialty magazines and contests the world over. In 2006, the Wine Spectator named their Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova 2001 the world’s top wine, calling it “one of the best examples of the recent winemaking renaissance in Tuscany.” Casanova di Neri, a small family company run by Giacomo Neri, has only 48 hectares of planted vineyards. Yet those 48 high-density hectares are divided among four separate estates — “Pietradonice” in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, the “Cetine” in S. Angelo in Colle, the “Cerretalto” and the “Fiesole” near the new cellar each with its own personality and nuances. Casanova di Neri’s new cellar is the culmination of years of work. A three-story underground cellar is ideally suited to blending and aging the full-bodied wines born here.

Località Molinello, 53024 Castelnuovo dell'Abate (SI)

The estate is located on the southeast slope of Montalcino, close to the medieval village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate and to the famous Romanesque Abbey of Sant’Antimo, which dates back to the 11th century. It features two wine cellars: the historical wine cellar, dedicated to the long ageing of the most prestigious wines located in the basement of the 17th century Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona Palace; the new wine cellar, near the village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, now the estate headquarters with fermentation, aging, refinement and storage facilities.

VAL D’ORCIA: MONTALCINO & MONTEPULCIANO

Cantina Avignonesi – Montepulciano

Via Colonica 1, 53045 Montepulciano (SI)

The Avignonesi wine estate is located near Valiano, between the two historic and beautiful towns of Montepulciano and Cortona. Their wines show the richness and elegance of Montepulciano. Sangiovese wines have been produced here for centuries (60-70 types of Sangiovese are used at Avignonesi). Avignonesi creates wines that are a reflection of its terroir, clean wines with no un-natural intervention thanks to the biodynamic approach. This combined with the passion and shared values of the staff allows Avignonesi to respect the character of each wine by following its natural journey from the soil to the cellar and to your glass. Next to Sangiovese wines, they also have a rosato, white wine and Vin Santo. At Avignonesi they are also trying new techniques, for example their wine Da-Di, this wine is vinified in ‘terracotta’ (Tuscan Clay). This gives a really nice result, a fruity and fresh Sangiovese wine, which shows the beauty of this grape.

DISCOVERING THE AREA

SIENA

25 min driving from our Resort

You can see Siena from afar, resplendent in its medieval harmony. The three hills on which it stands are the high points in an idyllic backdrop of arable fields, where the edges of the ancient city melt into a countryside which in places looks like the background to Ambrogio Lorenzetti's painting Allegory of Good Government in the Palazzo Pubblico. The Siena that greets you today is largely the same as it would have appeared back in 1300, and the preservation of its unique, coherent inheritance of medieval architecture is one of the main reasons to visit such a magnificent city. Siena's heart is its central piazza known as Il Campo, known worldwide for the famous Palio run here.

Main attractions: Piazza del Campo; Climb to the top of the Torre del Mangia; Piazza del Duomo and a visit to the Cathedral, the Crypt and the Piccolomini Library; the Opera del Duomo Museum.

Where to park: Parking Il Campo; Parking Lo Stadio.

MONTERIGGIONI & SAN GIMIGNANO

1h/1h15min driving from our Resort

The best way to see all of Monteriggioni at a glance is the walk along the medieval walls that surround the village. They are the same that appear from a distance when you approach the town in the province of Siena. Nothing has changed: they are the same walls that impressed Dante, so much to mention Monteriggioni in the XXXI canto dell'Inferno. The 14 towers built to defend this territory for centuries disputed between Siena and Florence, repeatedly conquered by one and the other city, are still intact. You will be enchanted by the quiet and relaxed atmosphere of Piazza Roma, with the Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the restaurants offering local cuisine. Discovering the Area

About 40 minutes drive from Monteriggioni, the 15 towers of San Gimignano appear as a mirage already from many kilometers away. They emerge in the Sienese hills offering the same view as a medieval traveler, when the towers of San Gimignano were 72.

Situated in a patchwork of fields, rolling hills and vineyards in Tuscany, San Gimignano’s history is long, dating back to the Etruscans & Romans. However, it was during the town's golden age, characterised by intense rivalries between influential families, that an indelible mark was left on the town and the landscape. San Gimignano is also the area where the famous "Vernaccia di San Gimignano" wine is produced. It is very easy to find wineries or wine shops to be able to make tastings admiring beautiful views – we definitely suggest a visit to the organic winery of Cappella di Sant’Andrea.

Discovering the Area

THE CHIANTI REGION

The origins of Chianti and its small towns is undeniably combined with that of the Etruscans, Romans, and the expanding populations of the two historic cities of Siena and Florence which often fought over this area. Start your journey from the Borgo in the direction of the stunning Brolio Castle to visit its gorgeous English gardens and the private Chapel of the Ricasoli noble Family. It’s then the turn of another breathtaking castle, Castello di Meleto. Continue towards the lovely town of Gaiole in Chianti, located along the course of the Massellone stream, which has developed since the thirteenth century as a "market town" for the castles and neighboring villages. Gaiole is also indissolubly connected to L'Eroica, an evocative manifestation of the cycling of other times that has been able to conquer the attention of many fans all over the world. It takes place every year at the beginning of October, mostly on dirt roads in the area of Chianti Senese and the regulation provides that you take part riding a vintage bike.

You cannot miss a visit to Radda in Chianti, and our top tip would be a stop in the Volpaia Borgo. Respecting eleventh century tradition, the castle and surrounding village remains heavily involved in the production of Volpaia’s wine and olive oil.

Next destination on our itinerary will take you to Castellina in Chianti, which stands as a quintessential hilltop village adorned with a rich tapestry of history and natural splendour. The majestic Fortress in the main square and the massive walls are visible signs of its glorious past. Don't miss Via delle Volte, where you can admire a hidden street with shops and enotecas (very romantic), and the Archeological Museum of Senese Chianti which includes a visit to the tower for some awesome panoramic views.

Panzano in Chianti became famous over the last few years for the butcher shop and restaurant called: Antica Macelleria Cecchini, specializing in an abundant table of fresh cut meats (especially the Florentine steak) and the owner who likes to recite Dante's Divine Comedy.

The following suggested stop is Greve in Chianti, which is traditionally considered the gateway to Chianti. Once inhabited by the Etruscans, this town is perhaps more famous for the great explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano. He is celebrated with a statue in the main square, Piazza Matteotti. Stroll the porticos around this three-sided piazza and check out the restaurants, enotecas (wine bars), and local shops.

CRETE SENESI E VAL D’ORCIA

1h driving from our Resort

These two areas of Tuscany are characterized by bucolic landscapes, soft hills that change color during the year, passing from lush green to warm autumn yellow. In addition to observing the iconic profiles of cypresses on the hills during the drive, we have chosen to make a stop in San Quirico d'Orcia. Here, after having covered a dirt stretch and a few steps on foot, you reach a particular circle of cypresses, in the center of which a work of modern art by Helidon has now been placed, a silver Ionic column. From here, the panoramic shots from above that bring out the perfect harmony of shapes.

The most evocative part of the Crete Senesi is located near the village of Asciano. Among the various panoramic points, we have chosen to stop for some shots at the Agriturismo Baccoleno. We had already admired it in several shots, but it was still very special to see it live around sunset time.

VAL D’ORCIA

1h driving from our Resort

Italy’s Val d’Orcia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its rolling green landscape dotted with Cypress trees, winding roads and hilltop villages are likely the exact scenery you picture when thinking about rural Italy.

Montalcino

The medieval village of Montalcino is undoubtedly worth a visit. On its top stands a castle (now it houses a wine shop) and is surrounded by a wall. Walking through its streets is like taking a dip in the past and during our visit the village was celebrating with a series of historical re-enactments. Do not miss the characteristic long and narrow tower of the Palazzo dei Priori, seat of the municipality, which overlooks Piazza del Popolo. Another reason why this village is known all over the world is undoubtedly the refined Brunello di Montalcino: if you want to buy a few bottles to take home, we recommend Enoteca di Piazza, present with different locations throughout the village.

Bagno Vignoni

This small village is a fraction of San Quirico d'Orcia. The name refers to its thermal origins and has its fulcrum in Piazza delle Sorgenti: a huge pool of thermal water that still flows at a high temperature. The square is surrounded by Renaissance palaces and a beautiful loggia. Stroll along via del Gorello, until you reach the remains of the ancient baths. Here, along ancient grooves in the floor, hot water still flows and then pours into the area from the Parco dei Mulini.

Pienza

Pienza is known for having been named the "ideal city of the Renaissance" by Pope Pius II. It is not difficult to understand the reason for this choice, walking along the streets of its historic center overlooked by splendid Renaissance buildings, such as the Cathedral, Piccolomini Palace and the Townhall. Of the imposing Piccolomini Palace, with its beautiful loggia, the interiors and the beautiful hanging garden can be visited. Pienza is also known for its tasty pecorino cheese, which you can taste and buy in one of the many shops located in its center, or at the wonderful Podere Il Casale.
