his summer in Lexington, I was so lucky to be able to watch a sunset almost every night, followed by the frenzy of lightning bugs and the clear night skies with the big dipper hanging over my head. It was a nightly light performance just right outside my house. After spending the summer here, I have a greater appreciation for the beauty of the town we are so fortunate to go to school in. But as the quiet Lexington summer vanished and turned into the rush of classes, I forgot about these little moments. Although they were still present, I wasn’t registering the sun setting over House Mountain or the warm coffee cup in my hand.

This is partly due to the way fall rushes into our lives like the way one floors the gas pedal - no brakes. I tend to get swept up in the busyness of the semester and forget to look around and cherish the beautiful town we live in. With the lingering summer influence, I started to appreciate the way the sun shines on leaves changing color or even when D-Hall’s menu looks especially good.

These little things can make a big difference.

The Fall 2023 issue celebrates the little things. From coffee in the mornings to a guide to gift giving, we offer our best advice and reviews with an emphasis on the impact of the smaller moments in life. We explore the best sunset and study spots because life is a lot better when we take the time to

enjoy our surroundings. Additionally, we dive deep into the clubs on campus, like the flurry of Mock Con, new additions to the Outing Club, and GAB’s Battle of the Bands. InGeneral’s 21st volume focuses on discovering the beauty in everyday life.

Thank you to our exec team and our staff members who worked hard amid their busy schedules to create a piece of simplicity for our readers. In this issue, we grew as a club with the participation of more staff members, meaning more creative pitches and design contributions!

Days are made up of a million little moments and sometimes we carelessly brush them off, but it is important to recognize and treasure the smaller things in life. When it comes down to it, it’s the little things that keep the world turning.

In case you forgot, Lexington somehow survives the summer without the buzz of the W&L students on campus. Townies do their thing as the heat prevails and The Colonnade solemnly awaits our arrival back on campus. Summer in quaint little Lexington can be hard to imagine, but it does exist. If you ever find yourself in Lexington during the summer, here’s a General-approved Lexington summer bucket-list!

It wouldn’t be Lexington without live outdoor music. The Lime Kiln Theater thrives during the warmer months as it hosts its annual spring and summer music series. Up-andcoming bluegrass talent such as 49 Winchester and the Rebirth Brass Band, bring locals out to listen and enjoy. Other live music opportunities include The Beach Music Festival in Buena Vista, Boxerwood Music in the Garden, and Rock the Bridge.

These events reveal a different side of Lexington as locals come together for entertainment, something we don’t get to see throughout the school year.

Another highly reviewed activity close to our dear home is Panther Falls, and certainly one of Caroline Evans’s ’25 favorites. She explains, “one of my favorite summer things we did was swimming and tanning at Panther Falls.”

Don’t forget about the Maury! Many students take the day just to float or swim in the Maury to cool off from the

hot summer sun. If you want to add a little adventure, kayaking on the Maury is also a fan favorite activity!

For non-swimmers there are still plenty of other summer activities in Lexington. Audrey Jameson ’24 swears by blueberry picking at Pippen Hill Farm as it was a core summer memory she spent with friends. And of course activities just in our backyard!

Different hikes such as The Priest, House Mountain, and Dragon’s Tooth are all highly-rated. Other activities like bike rides on the Chessie Nature Trail, climbing at the Outing Club, and different fishing adventures are all numerous ways to get outside and soak up the summer fun!

The Fourth of July Festival is another exciting event to look forward to as the town comes together to celebrate Independence Day. Luckily, many W&L students get to partake in “summering” in Lexington.

Langley Steuart ‘24 lived here this past summer working for the Shenandoah magazine and explained, “There was more time to explore the area and I definitely gained a new perspective of the town and the people who live in Lexington regularly. Staying in Lexington this past summer is just going to make it ten times harder to leave in May!” Saying goodbyes and moving back home as Spring Term concludes can be hard. So maybe you don’t have to! Lexington still offers it’s sweet, simplistic lifestyle even without us.

WHAT’S NEW FOR FALL AT The Outing Club?

With W&L’s packed academic and social calendar, you may be looking for a peaceful place to temporarily escape from the hustle and bustle. One of the Outing Club’s best hidden gems is a little cabin that offers just that. Henri’s Cabin, located in the back campus woods, is available for students to rent out for the night. It was built in 2012 by W&L student Henri Hammond-Paul as part of his senior thesis in English. He wanted the cabin to serve as a quiet, secluded place where students can relax and recharge in nature. The tiny structure is just 8-by-10 feet and is just off the Short Loop trail on back campus. BATTLE OF THE BANDS GAB’s fall concert series comes to a finale with its Nov. 8 competition.

I

n past years, students may have been familiar with the annual fall concert put on by the General Activities Board (GAB). This year, GAB has decided to draw from the student body’s musical talent for their fall concert by hosting a series of backyard BBQ concerts leading up to a final Battle of the Bands, which will be held at Windfall Hill on Nov. 8.

The series has two main goals - to bring the school community together with fun and casual events and to act as a fundraiser for a great winter semester artist, who the GAB executive team will be choosing in the upcoming months.

Over the course of the fall term, four bands performed their sets in the Third Year Village on Sept. 26 and Oct. 27. Each of these bands will have the chance to compete for the winning title at the final concert, which the GAB team promises to be a night to enjoy with fun, food, and friends.

From fraternity traditions to brand new additions: Our back-stage guide to W&L’s student bands Winding Way, formerly known as Meat Puzzle, is the current iteration of the Chi Psi band. A Lexington tradition, the band has existed in some form throughout the past ten years.

In recent years, the band has opened for artists B.o.B and Sean Kingston and performed various other shows on and off campus.

Veterans of the band include vocalists Joe Condie (a Missouri native described to have “shook St. Louis to its core” with his singing) and Kate Lardner and Samuel Cox and Mark Waller splitting bass and guitar. This year, the band has been happy to welcome new faces including Will Pittman on keyboard, Harris Stripling on guitar, and Turner Edwards on the drums.

With a dynamic and innovative sound, Winding Way covers bands like the Grateful Dead, the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and the Cranberries.

Commonly referred to as “the Pi Kapp Band,” Jet Stream started in 2021 when the frat realized that they had many musically talented members.

They debuted at the frat’s Parents and Family Weekend event.

Since then, the group has played at band parties and other on-campus events, including Campus Kitchen’s 11th annual SouperBowl fundraiser. Lead singer Josh Lewis says that the band has played under many different names and has always featured “wildly different music tastes.” This year, Lewis is joined by Andrew Flood, Sellers Smith, bassist Deuce Smoot, drummer Wonjun Jo, and Chris Lyman on keys.

The boys like to think that being open to a range of different musical genres and styles makes the band more fun to listen to because audience members get to hear a mix of songs that they know and songs that they’ve never heard before.

Time

Trav debuted

in March 2023 as an energetic punk rock group from the Class of 2026. Since then, they have performed at Friday Night Underground and several Pike events.

Singer Isabel Duarte said that her and bassist Bill Zheng quickly bonded over shared music tastes and past live musical experiences during a music theory class.

Guitarist John Little said that the friends chose the name “Time Trav” because they wanted to pay homage to W&L’s Trav program.

They also wanted listeners to feel like time travelers. Tim Johns, the new drummer, joined the band this fall.

Although Duarte says the band pulls inspiration from every genre, they often cover energetic classic rock hits as well as their own original work. This year, the band hints at a new sound including an acoustic set.

Formed in Fall 2023 after learning that there was no allfemale band participating in GAB’s Battle of the Bands, Local Honey was created by friends and sorority sisters Lily Greenwald and Kate Keeley. They quickly began putting together a multi-genre setlist that seeks to bring a “girly and harmonic twist” to traditionally masculine songs. Soon enough, they were joined by Nora Jacobson, who brought her tambourine skills into the mix.

The band debuted at GAB’s Oct. 27 concert.

Greenwald says that when the group sang their first song together, magic was made. “You could say that we made a little bit of honey,” she said, referencing the group’s name. As a new band, the girls are excited to see where their journey goes and are looking forward to making and listening to some amazing music.

ooking for a change of scenery? Need a new place to study for your upcoming test? Read about some of the best unique study spots on campus!

Telford Science Library Up first is the Science Library! Located directly inside the doors of the Science Center, the Science Library is a great alternative to the main library on campus. This library is much smaller and quieter, and is open 24 hours a day just like the main library. This library is a great place to go if you want a quiet environment to study with close proximity to many classes.

Coop Porches

study for people who enjoy a noisier coffee-shop environment, but don’t want to go into town. The CGL also has balconies that are popular for studying on when the weather is nice.

Doing work here makes it much more bearable when you are surrounded by a gorgeous view.

Lenfest Center for the Arts Another lesser known study spot is Lenfest Center for the Arts. Lenfest Center houses Lykes Atrium that features multiple seating arrangements, a wall of windows, and numerous nearby art pieces. This spot is full of natural light and artistic inspiration for any project, paper, or studying.

A very popular spot among students when the weather is nice are the porches of Coop.

Located in between Leyburn Library and Elrod Commons, Coop is a frequented spot at all times of day, as it opens early and stays open until 2 a.m. every night. There is a second porch above the main porch that’s accessible by going up the spiral staircase in Commons and through the Student Organizations room. Both porches of Coop feature tables and chairs fit for studying in groups, while also being able to enjoy the weather and have food and drinks nearby.

Last but not least, the Hotchkiss Alumni House porch is a great place for working in groups. It features multiple round tables on a covered porch with a picturesque view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

It’s an amazing place to enjoy the weather while doing collaborative work.

Lexington Coffee Shop: (reviewed by

Fraley) Lexington Coffee Shop is one of the classics in town and has been around since the ‘90s LexCo definitely wins for the best fall vibe, with both their interior decorating and cozy aura. I tried the three drinks the barista said were her favorite fall picks. She said hot drinks are a must for fall.

The first pick was the toasted marshmallow latte. If s’mores don’t remind you of autumn by the fire, wrapped up in a blanket, I don’t know what will. The first sip was a small slice of heaven. Similar to a vanilla latte, this one tasted equally delicious but slightly more candied. This one wins the category for Sneaky Winner. While I would never have picked marshmallow flavor for myself, I sure am glad the barista did. It is light enough of a flavor to where I can still taste the yummy latte flavor. Imagine this one as a sweet treat in coffee form.

Next up was the cinnamon latte, which she recommended with oat milk. From the first sip I got the exact flavor of a red hot candy. If you love these candies, I think you will love this drink.

Sweet with a little bit of spice, this drink feels warm and cozy and would be perfectly enjoyed by a fire. The cinnamon to oat milk to coffee ratio is perfect and not too overwhelming.

LexCo’s pumpkin chai was on the must-try list from my barista. Again, I am not a chai lover, but this drink may have just changed that for me. My usual complaint with chai is that it is too flavorful and kinda reminds me of a Bath and Body Works candle. And who wants to drink a candle? This drink, however, tasted nothing like a candle. I would drink 10 of these if I could. The pumpkin and chai work beautifully together. The whole milk made it smooth and the pumpkin gave it a hint of sweetness. LexCo may have just converted me to a chai-lover…

not expecting this drink to be so delicious. I usually stay away from white chocolate, especially in my coffee, but I will be ordering this drink until the fall season ends. This drink has the perfect amount of sweetness and creaminess and the cold foam just puts it over the top. Definitely a strong start for Seasons’ Yield! Coffee drinkers be wary, if you do not enjoy a sweet drink this one is not going to be your favorite.

Isabella: “This reminds of a fall dessert in a coffee drink” This one wins Best Local Iced Drink.

Next, I tried the iced fall spice latte. This one wins points for creativity and originality! Their “fall spice” flavor consists of vanilla, maple, and hazelnut and all these flavors complimented each other very well. This reminds me a lot of a dirty chai, but creamier. It has the perfect fall spice and essence, but not too sweet. Seasons’ Yield knows how to make a delicious iced latte!

Next I had to order the classic, pumpkin spice latte. I couldn’t order fall drinks and not get this one. There was some nutmeg and pumpkin spice topping which may have overwhelmed the drink, but other than that, this is a high quality PSL. It had a perfect amount of pumpkin and foam on top. This is a solid pumpkin latte. In Lexington, I would make this my go-to spot for all my PSL cravings.

Lastly, I chose the dirty pumpkin chai latte.

I ordered this hot and it was just the epitome of a fall drink. The pumpkin and chai blend well together and neither flavor was too overwhelming. This drink simply put me in a warm fall feeling. I would argue that this is better than a pumpkin spice latte and definitely a new favorite of mine. It reminds me of the fall spice latte, but with a lot more pumpkin. This one ties with LexCo for Best Chai!

Seasons’ Yield at Haywoods: (reviewed by

Cate) Seasons’ Yield at The Georges’ Haywoods is a more recent addition to downtown Lexington, but what they lack in time they make up in popularity. They have a wide variety of fall toasts, pastries, and most importantly: coffee drinks.

After some help from the barista, I was able to narrow down the extensive menu to a few standouts and staples.

My first recommendation was the white chocolate pumpkin latte. This drink typically comes iced since it features a white chocolate cold foam on top that left me speechless. I was INGENERAL 7

But in the hustle of our busy lives, this scenic background can quickly become a mundane backdrop. One of the best ways to remind ourselves of this beauty is to watch a sunset. Yes, it sounds simple, but when was the last time you really took the time to watch the sunset?

For most of us, it has probably been a while. Living in such a beautiful place, we have no shortage of spots to watch the sunset. So, here are some of the best sunset spots in and around Lexington.

Who doesn’t love a good sunset picnic with friends? Grab some snacks, a blanket, and your friends and pack into the car to head to Flagpole.

Owned by a Washington and Lee alumni, W&L students are more than welcome to drive down the road and up the hill to watch the sunset. Arguably one of the most iconic spots in Lexington, every student has to go before they graduate. Beautiful at any time of day, but especially so at sunset.

Looking for a walk on the back campus walking trails? Park at the old Outing Club barn and walk up the hill to the Gazebo trail. In a field owned

by Washington and Lee, it serves as a little nature

retreat from our busy lives here. A campus favorite, the Gazebo offers some beautiful views and is perfect for a sunset spot for you and your friends.

Just fifteen minutes down the road, the Blue Ridge Parkway has countless unbeatable lookout spots perfect for a sunset. You can drive down just for the sunset, or take the day to explore the park and hike around before finding a lookout for sunset. A perfect way to appreciate these mountains around us!

One not so hidden gem here at Washington and Lee is the Poles Overlook. Take a nice walk up past the Outing Club, past the VMI training area, and you will not be able to miss it. A big cliff overlooking the Maury River and Poles houses, this spot is beautiful at any time of day.

Finally, if you’re not looking for a drive or longer walk, just head right over to Third Year Dining to look out on W&L’s scenic campus at sunset. This spot is often overlooked, but if you’re looking for a change in scenery next time you’re going to dinner, it’s a perfect place to watch the sunset with friends.

LOCAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: JASON HOETTERS

I

t’s no secret that the Washington and Lee community loves their music. If you love classic rock, country or alternative check out Jason Hostetter’s music. Hostetter was born and raised in Rockbridge County and now spends his time performing for events in the Lexington area. Jason mostly performs solo with an acoustic guitar, although sometimes is accompanied by other musicians. Jason performs at a variety of local venues, including a Lexington favorite - Devils Backbone Brewing Co. Jason covers country and alternative from the ’70s, ‘80s, ‘90s. He has a large repertoire of music and can be seen playing all over the Shenandoah Valley. Jason has over 8

Violett Violett Consignment Consignment

S

heila Glaesar said she’s never lived anywhere that doesn’t have a consignment shop and Lexington desperately needed one. She opened Violett Consignment in May 2023 and since then, local Lexington families and students have donated and bought from her one-of-a-kind store. Located on Nelson St. in downtown Lexington, Sheila picked the perfect quaint space to display her growing collection of second-hand clothes, antiques and accessories.

The name Violett Consignment comes from Sheila’s maiden name Violett. Not only is the name personal to her but she also feels it “evokes positive and pretty things.”

She likes how it matches the Lexington “vibe” with stores like Clover, Sugar Maple, and Pumpkin Seeds around the corner, contributing to Lexington’s strip of cheerful local businesses.

Sheila currently has 100 consigners, but this number is constantly growing. Most of her consigners are local Lexington women around ages 30 to 50. Sheila says what makes her consigners unique is that many have lived in big metropolitan areas, making items timeless. However, her shoppers are all-ages. For the middle and high schoolers, the accessories and athleisure section are particularly popular. She sells dresses ranging from casual sun dresses to gowns for weddings and special occasions. You never know what you might find at Violett Consignment. In the five months the store has been open, she has sold 138 dresses, 159 tops, 51 jewelry pieces, and 260 items that are uncategorized, and these numbers are constantly increasing.

Sheila believes shopping secondhand is super important. “Textiles can’t keep going in landfills,” she says. “It just doesn’t make sense to keep buying clothes when we are flooded with clothes in this country.” Sheila often gets clothes from her consigners that still have the tags on or are barely used. You’re practically buying new clothes for half the price.

Pumpkin Seeds carries a selection of products related to Lexington like the Ella B Candles with scents like The Blue Ridge Parkway and Lex Vegas ($34). They also have prints representing places and items known to Virginia locals on napkins, dishes, and dish towels.

Additionally, Pumpkin Seeds offers a huge selection of personal birthday cards. But these birthday cards aren’t like the ones you might find at the pharmacy or grocery store. These cards are much more intricate and artistic and would be a nice touch to any gift!

ave you noticed an abundance of mini-games of tennis being played? That’s pickleball! An up-andcoming paddle-ball game with simple rules which makes it perfect for people of all ages and skill levels. Playing pickleball on campus is easy, just find a tennis court and set up markers to make it the correct size. Here’s your guide to your next game:

1.

Set up the court with 2-4 players. All need a paddle and one wiffle ball.

On each side of the net, there is a 7 ft non-volley zone called the kitchen. This means you can not hit an air-borne ball in this zone.

You can hit a groundstroke in the kitchen.

The first team to 11 points wins but must win by 2 points.

The serving player starts the rally by hitting the ball underhand and diagonally to their opponent. The goal is to put the ball into play.

ince its renovation this past summer, Café 77, better known to students as “Coop,” generously expanded its selection of healthy snacks.

A popular pick in the hot food line are their grilled chicken tenders, marinated to perfection and served piping hot, W&L dining has expanded its efforts to serve local meats and produce; the chicken is no exception.

If you’re looking for something a bit quicker, the stand-alone display fridges are stocked full of fermented yogurt kefir drinks, Greek yogurt, hummus, cottage cheese, Pressed Juicery wellness shots to ensure some occasional cleansing, canned Humm kombucha, a fermented probiotic carbonated drink, and so much more.

The Clio Greek yogurt bars are mess and utensil-free, high-protein snack.

Dipped in a thin layer of crispy dark chocolate, they satiate anyone’s sweet tooth.

Another personal favorite would be the Mush overnight oats, offered in several different flavors.

They’re a fantastic source of carbs in a midday snack to help push through those afternoon classes.

Across the hall, the University Store also has some

great snacks and a shorter line than Coop or D-Hall.

My go-to has been either the salted pistachios or honey-glazed cashews. Both are non-GMO verified and grown on family-owned farms in California.

The University store also offers Lesser Evil Himalayan popcorn, dark chocolate, Legally Addictive cookie-crackers, Kind Bars, honey stroop waffles, and an array of refrigerated beverages.

On the other side of campus, Third-Year Foodside now offers Açaí bowls on Fridays, a surprise addition to their general schedule of (what once was) Saturdays and Sundays. Students line up at the door before the 11:00 a.m. opening time to get their fruity fix.

Students with swipes to spare often purchase three or four bowls at once to freeze and eat throughout the week. Every bowl includes up to six toppings, from fruity to creamy to crunchy to nutty.

A Day in the Life of Mock Con General Chair Ramsay Trask

E

veryone at Washington and Lee knows about Mock Con, but does anyone really understand the work that goes into the four years of planning?

There are a multitude of different positions, such as Events Chair, Regional Chairs, Political Outreach Chair, and State Chairs, but the girl that runs it all is General Chair Ramsay Trask. We sat down with General Chair Trask to see what the inner workings of the planning for Mock Con entail.

When looking at schools to apply to, Mock Con helped pull Ramsay to W&L. She knew from the application process that she wanted to be involved in Mock Con, but wasn’t exactly sure how. After going to an info session for the General Chair position, she felt as though the qualities spoke to her and decided this was the position she was going to pursue.

Seven rounds of interviews later, the position was hers. She received the General Chair position during her freshman year spring semester in 2021, and the work began almost immediately.

From freshman to sophomore year, the workload was steady, but throughout junior and the beginning of her senior year, the work significantly ramped up and will continue to do so. Not yet convinced that Ramsay does it all? She isn’t even allowed to take a full course load second semester of this year in preparation for the convention. On average, Ramsay spends about 30 hours a week doing work for Mock Con, but by the Convention and the months leading up to it, she will have around 70-hour weeks.

We all know Mock Con by its most enthralling, camera-ready moments – the glamorous Presidential Gala, the creativity inherent in the Parade, and the exciting atmosphere of convention weekend. But the planning process hasn’t been all rainbows and sunshine. When asked about the most challenging aspect of the process thus far, Ramsay underscored the difficulties inherent 16
