We caught up with Vicky Howe, the Director of Sales at The Eastside Rooms and Aloft by Marriott Birmingham Eastside. With three years at the venue and more than 25 years in hospitality behind her, Vicky gives us an honest look at what it takes to run one of Birmingham's most flexible event spaces, from juggling a packed diary of exhibitions and client meetings to championing the venue's Gold Neuroinclusive Venue Accreditation. How long have you worked at Eastside Rooms?

I have just celebrated my three-year anniversary at the venue, though it has gone incredibly quickly! I have been in the hospitality industry for over 25 years, and I am still learning, which makes most days different. I love the relationships I have built along the way and continue to build.

Tell us about your role, what does your job involve? I'm lucky to have a really varied role. I lead our sales team and the strategy for the venue, which means we are always looking at new opportunities, building relationships and making sure our clients have successful events and enjoyable stays. I'm also really proud that we are the first venue globally to hold Gold Neuroinclusive Venue Accreditation, so part of my role is making sure that is front and centre when we are talking to organisers about what makes us different. The things I enjoy the most are creating and building relationships. What's the most challenging part of your job?

Probably time, where does it go?! There are times of the year when everything seems to happen at once and the days fly by. Thankfully, after more than 25 years in the industry, I've learnt how to prioritise and keep everything on track. I'm lucky to have a great team, and we all work very well together.

What's been the best advice given to you?
The best advice I've been given is to trust my own judgement. Earlier in my career, I used to overthink just about every decision and spend far too long trying to make everything perfect. Now, I've learnt to trust my experience and instincts, and only spend time reflecting on the tasks that truly require it. That doesn't mean I always get it right (none of us do!), but I've realised that making a well-informed decision and moving forward is almost always the better approach.

What's the best part of your job? And least favourite? The best part of my job is definitely the people. I love building relationships, getting to know our clients and understanding what they are trying to achieve. There is also a real sense of satisfaction when they confirm their event with us and, even better, when you see the team bring the event to life and you know you have introduced that client to our venue. As for my least favourite part, I would be lying if I said I loved every minute of the admin! It is all part of the job, and I do not dislike it, but if I had the choice, I would much rather be out meeting clients, showing people around the venue or speaking with them on the phone than sitting in front of a spreadsheet. 01775 843410 Monday to Friday, 8.30am -5.30pm

What's your favourite dish on the menu?

It has to be the Chicken Caesar Salad. I know it's not the most adventurous choice, but sometimes you just can't beat a classic, especially when it is as good as ours! Although, that may well change this month, as we have a wonderful new menu launching that I'm very much looking forward to trying.

What are the catering options for delegates?
We offer a delicious hot and cold buffet for delegate lunches. Our chef creates incredible salad tables that are always a talking point, alongside freshly prepared hot dishes. We also make sure all dietary requirements and allergens are catered for, so every guest is looked after.

Do you have a favourite event room and why? It has to be our Affinity Suite, it never looks the same twice! One day it could be set up for a theatre-style conference for 1,200 delegates, the next it's transformed into a glamorous awards dinner for 500 guests. And at the weekend it might be dressed for a beautiful wedding. We can even host two events simultaneously, thanks to our fully soundproofed Skyfold partition and separate breakout areas. The flexibility of the space is remarkable, and I never tire of seeing how creative our clients can be. Although I do think our biggest hidden gem is our smaller meeting rooms. Everyone thinks of us for the large-scale events, but we have some brilliant intimate spaces too, perfect for board meetings, training days and smaller client events, and they are overlooked far too often. What's been the most memorable event held at your venue? One of my most memorable events was attending the Aimbridge Forum as a delegate and experiencing our venue through the eyes of our clients. It was an Under the Sea themed event for 400 delegates, with 25 exhibitors, various breakout sessions and an awards dinner. Our operations team delivered every element so effortlessly and helped to create a truly outstanding event. The food was exceptional, the atmosphere was wonderful, and I came away feeling incredibly proud to be part of the team and to showcase everything our venue is capable of. 42

There are plenty of ways to make the most of some downtime. If you would rather stay in, you can unwind at the Aloft by Marriott Birmingham Eastside with a drink and/or meal in our restaurant or bar or fit in a workout in our onsite gym. If you want to experience Birmingham, we are just a ten‑to‑fifteen-minute walk from the city centre, with fantastic shops, bars and restaurants. Whether it is visiting Birmingham Cathedral, exploring one of the city's museums, relaxing in a park, or trying something a little different such as F1 Arcade, Flight Club or a virtual reality experience, there is something for everyone. With theatres, concert venues, the National Sea Life Centre and Cadbury World all nearby, there is so much to see and do.

Outside of work, I love spending time with family and friends. I try to keep fit by attending a yoga class and getting out for a walk, usually in our local park. I am also a big fan of the theatre, especially musicals; Wicked is my favourite!
