Issue 51 | October 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S PEN: Learning, Living and Leading with Purpose Two significant occasions in recent weeks have provided our Fairholme community with an opportunity to reflect on both where we have come from and where we are heading.

reflected young women striving to live out our values of Seeking Excellence, Respect, Enjoyment, Collaboration and Christ-centred Faith in their daily lives.

At Presenting Fairholme, we gathered to celebrate the achievements, contributions and growth of our students throughout 2026. More than an awards evening, it was an opportunity to pause amid the busyness of school life and consider a simple but important question: How do we ensure every Fairholme girl learns, lives and leads with purpose?

We were also privileged to acknowledge staff whose dedicated service has helped shape generations of Fairholme girls – Mrs Jenny Noble, Mrs Fran Brazier, Mrs Erin Tonscheck, Mr Craig Gibbens and Mrs Colette Whell. From long-serving educators and leaders to those who have quietly worked behind the scenes for decades, their contributions form an enduring part of our College story. Their commitment reminds us that strong communities are built through service, generosity and care for others.

This question sits at the heart of our emerging Strategic Outlook and underpins everything we seek to achieve as a College. We want our students to learn with curiosity and courage, live with integrity, compassion and gratitude, and lead with conviction, service and purpose. Throughout the evening, we reflected on the many ways this vision is already taking shape. Initiatives such as the reimagining of our Junior School, Holme Health and our expanding Global Experiences program are creating opportunities for girls to engage deeply with their learning while preparing them to contribute meaningfully to the world around them. Whether pursuing pathways into healthcare, participating in specialised programs and industry partnerships, or embracing international experiences that broaden perspectives and build independence, our young women are discovering that education is about much more than personal achievement. It is about making a difference. Importantly, Presenting Fairholme also reminded us that success is measured by more than results and awards. The achievements we celebrated were evidence of courage, character and growth. They

‘True leadership is about creating opportunities for others to flourish...’

Dr Leigh Hobart

A particularly special moment during Presenting Fairholme was the recognition of our graduating Year 12 leaders. As they prepare for the many “firsts” that await beyond the school gates, they also leave behind a legacy of service and contribution. Through leadership committees, student initiatives and their daily example, they have strengthened every corner of College life. To our 2026 Head Girls, Bronte, Alex and Miranda, and to the entire Year 12 cohort, thank you

for demonstrating that leadership is not defined by a title, but by influence, service and the positive impact we have on those around us. The very next day, another important chapter began as we inducted our 2027 student leaders. While Presenting Fairholme celebrated a year of accomplishment, the Leadership Induction Service looked toward the future. It marked the passing of responsibility from one cohort of leaders to the next and challenged our newest leaders to embrace leadership as an act of service. In a world that often associates leadership with visibility and achievement, we reflected on a different understanding of leadership. True leadership is about creating opportunities for others to flourish. It is about building belonging, acting with integrity and having the courage to do what is right, even when it may not be easy. Our newly inducted leaders were encouraged to remember that their greatest influence will come not from the badges they wear or the positions they hold, but from their character. The true measure of leadership is found in the experience of those around us. Do others feel welcomed? Valued? Encouraged to become their best selves?

We are delighted to acknowledge our 2027 Head Girls, Ruby, Alicia and Lexi, who, alongside their fellow student leaders, will help shape the spirit and direction of Fairholme in the year ahead. They have been entrusted with this responsibility because they have already demonstrated the qualities that matter most: integrity, empathy, courage and a willingness to serve. Together, these two occasions capture something distinctive about Fairholme. They remind us that leadership is not an endpoint but a journey. As one group of young women steps confidently into the next stage of life, another steps forward to serve and carry forward the traditions that lie close to our hearts while looking optimistically towards the future. For both groups, and indeed for all of us, the challenge remains the same: to learn with purpose, live with purpose and lead with purpose. In a rapidly changing world, these timeless qualities of character, faith, resilience and service will continue to guide our community and shape the women Fairholme sends into the world. It is a future that gives us every reason for confidence and hope.

Dr Leigh Hobart | Principal

Welcome Holme,Mrs Stains Get to know our new Head of Junior School, Mrs Pam Stains.

Having previously been part of the Fairholme College community as Head of Teaching and Learning, Mrs Pam Stains returns with a deep appreciation of what makes Fairholme such a special place: the warmth of its people, the strength of its relationships, and the unwavering commitment to helping every student flourish.

where every child feels known, valued and inspired to learn.

We are thrilled to welcome Pam back to Fairholme and look forward to the wonderful contribution she will make to our Junior School.

What is your philosophy when it comes to nurturing confident, capable and curious young learners?

Welcome back to Fairholme! How does it feel to be returning to the College in the role of Head of Junior School? It feels wonderful. Fairholme is a school that I care deeply about, and I feel honoured and privileged to be leading the Junior School. What excites you most about leading the Fairholme Junior School? The opportunity to continue to shape a special community

The Junior years are such an important time in a child’s life, and I love working with dedicated staff and supportive families to ensure each girl is supported to flourish academically, socially and emotionally.

My philosophy is always grounded in relational leadership and relational pedagogy. I am passionate about creating an environment where academic excellence is balanced with wellbeing, character development and a strong sense of belonging. I believe that students learn best and will always achieve greater success when they genuinely feel known, valued and connected to those around them. Strong relationships are the foundation for confidence, curiosity and growth.

If you could spend a day back in your own junior school classroom, what would you love to tell your younger self? The first thing I would tell myself is to trust the journey because my dream of becoming the Head of an all-girls Junior School will come true. I would also remind myself to be brave, even when it feels difficult or uncertain. True growth and learning happen when we are willing to take risks, try new things and learn from the journey. What was your favourite subject at school? Primary school was PE and English. I attended a small rural primary school, and the PE teacher would travel and visit many of the small schools in our district, it was always an exciting day

when they arrived! I attended Boarding school during my Secondary years and found a love of English and Legal Studies. I considered going into Law at University but feel that I made the right choice with Education. Finish this sentence … The best thing about working with children is … Witnessing their growth, celebrating their achievements (big and small) and seeing the world through their eyes with a wonderful sense of wonder, curiosity and possibility.

Smartphone Delay: Not never. Just not yet Renewing our commitment to delaying smartphone ownership into 2027

With student safety and wellbeing as our foremost priority, we continue our shared commitment to the Smartphone Delay Initiative heading into 2027 alongside The Glennie School, and Toowoomba Grammar School.

demonstrated positive outcomes and strong continued support. Shared community standards have significantly reduced peer pressure and social fear of missing out, empowering families to make healthier choices around technology together.

This initiative reflects national research and expert advice, including guidance from the eSafety Commissioner and the Raising Children Network on the benefits of delaying personal smartphone ownership until after Year 7.

By standing together, our schools provide a unified framework in which students can flourish both academically and socially without the added distractions of personal smartphones.

At the heart of the initiative is a simple but powerful purpose: to nurture mental health, boost academic concentration, foster face-to-face peer connections, support healthy sleep habits, and shield young people from online risks during critical formative years. Over the past year of implementation across our three schools, ongoing feedback from staff, parents, and students has

Three Schools. One Commitment.

Each school will continue to provide practical guidance, resources for basic phone alternatives, and opportunities for dialogue. We look forward to working side-by-side with both new and existing families in 2027 to uphold student wellbeing across our communities.

SPORT HIGHLIGHTS

Top 16 at Queensland All Schools Touch Football

> Sprint (Urban) - Silver (Senior Girls)

Our U13, U15 and Open Touch Football teams travelled to the Gold Coast to play at the Qld All Schools Touch Tournament the largest school touch carnival in the world, featuring almost 500 teams.

> Long Distance (Bush) - Bronze (Senior Girls)

The Open and U13 teams both suffered just one narrow loss in the pool rounds, going down by a single try, while our U15 team remained undefeated throughout pool rounds and finished top of their pool. Their efforts saw all three teams progress to the Finals Series and finish among the top 16 teams in their respective divisions. Although our finals campaigns came to an end at that stage, every team fought hard and were narrowly defeated by quality opposition that went on to feature deep into the finals. Reaching the top 16 is a fantastic achievement and marks the first time in several years that all three of our teams have qualified for finals at this event! This success is a reflection of the commitment, hard work and dedication shown by our players and coaches since preparations began back in February. Finishing so highly in a tournament of this size is something our entire school community can be proud of. Congratulations to our Touch teams on an outstanding tournament.
