THE AUDITION PROCESS

After my first concert, with my ringlet hair, I proclaimed to my Mum how much I loved performing on stage I loved everything about it. From the preparation of getting ready, standing backstage to the curtain opening and having all audience appreciating what we were doing I think even then, I knew I wanted to be part of the theatre.

My training started at Barbara Jayne Dance Centre and am still here now. I studied all genres of dance and was encouraged to start singing lessons at age 9 after my first song and dance, ‘It’s a Hard Knock Life’!

I competed in many dance competitions and Eisteddfods over the years My favourite memories, however, come from the many musicals I have been involved in either through school or other brilliant South Australian companies

So when Year 11 was approaching the questions started coming, ‘what are you going to do next year?, what do you want to do as a career? My first response, ‘I want to perform’ I decided I wanted to do a Bachelor of Musical Theatre and see where it leads me.

However, the decision to study Musical Theatre cannot be made at the end of the school year. It’s not a decision you can wait until after exams to decide on, it’s a process you must start thinking about before Year 12 even starts! One of the first steps in the process is research; researching the various courses available to try to find what will suit and appeal to you

There are so many options ranging from 1 or 2 year diploma courses available at various Dance Schools or Academies to 3 year Bachelor degrees, and they are available in many different states! It is important to try to identify what you, as a potential performer, would like to do to further enhance your training and experience.

Then, and only then, did I start to look at the audition requirements They all differed ever so slightly, so attention to detail was important

Most of the initial auditions were via video submissions I needed to prepare, film and submit various videos of myself dancing, singing and performing monologues It was important to keep checking what each course specifically required, ie some required specific Shakespearean monologues or specifically pre-1960s Musical Theatre songs while others were more open ended Choosing the ‘right’ song or monologue to showcase what you can do is time consuming You generally produce two pieces of each Then you need to spend the time getting inflections, timings, tones, accents, breathing, everything to the best you can do I spent a lot of time with my vocal coaches and drama teacher at school helping me to produce these pieces Dancing is something I have always done My hardest decision there is choosing what to put forward

Once your applications were submitted, you play the waiting game… the worst part of it all! After a few months (yes that’s how long it can be), I received opportunities to attend live in person call-back auditions Some of these involved taking the risk and going interstate to attend the auditions

These auditions bought a whole new set of nerves and excitement You feel like the next few hours could make or break your whole career, your whole life! You meet other candidates, applicants, some people you may have even met before, many you haven’t but you all share the same nervous excitement There are so many different people of ages, backgrounds, heights (I’m short!) You listen to each other You wonder, can I do it, will I do it? You take deep breaths, be there in the moment, do the best you can and walk away hoping you have done enough Then you wait again It is part of the excitement, the anticipation, the hope It is all part of auditioning We don’t know what the schools are looking for, maybe we have it, maybe we don’t. All we can do is our best and love what we do. We can’t be anyone else, we can only be ourselves.

I’m not sure I’ve ever really written these rules down for myself before but they are certainly what I have followed:

BE PREPARED

Know what the auditions requirements are and start finding your songs, monologues and dance choreography as soon as possible.

CHOOSE YOUR MATERIAL WISELY

It may be tempting to choose a song that is very hard, in an attempt to impress an audition panel It might work, however, it is important to choose songs, monologues, dances which suit you and your style The material you choose should show your strengths and give the panel an insight into who you are and who could be

THE WAITING GAME

It is easy to finish an audition and replay every moment back in your head; overanalysing every word and movement. Do not do this! Once you have left the audition room, there is nothing you can do to change what has happened. I had to constantly remind myself that there was no point spending the time and energy on worrying what could have or should have been done…it’s done!

ENJOY THE PROCESS

Find moments to enjoy your auditions, whether they be recorded or in person. They are a time to show people who you are, showcasing your hard work and dedication. Keep reminding yourself why you are doing this. Why you love to perform.

My name is Jorja McKnight. I am 14 years old and was diagnosed with Perthes disease in February 2021. Perthes disease is a rare childhood disease that affects 1 in 10000 children. It’s a disease that affects the blood supply to the hip bone.

Without treatment, your hip structure becomes unstable and collapses, therefore needing a hip replacement. Luckily for me, mine was caught quite early. I lost 20 percent of blood supply to the hip bone and was instructed immediately to come off the leg and straight into a wheelchair.

I was not able to weight-bear at all, no walking or standing. Mum even had to help me with simple tasks such as getting in and out of the shower. I also had to quit dancing and unfortunately spend two terms home-schooled.

At the end of October 2021, I was allowed to commence some weight bearing activities like walking with crutches and physio treatment In January 2022 I was finally allowed to walk on my own again It felt very weird considering how long I had been off my leg

For a few months I walked with a strange limp but thankfully now it’s all gone. Overall, I spent 10 months of 2021 not walking so when the doctor told me I could finally dance again it was a dream come true. In May 2022, I was given the all clear from my surgeon to start dancing again. I started small with the basics. Each week I worked my way up and became fitter and started to remember old habits.

I found it interesting how quickly my turns came back but how difficult it was to relearn acro, which I am still working on. I was really scared to put any forceful weight on my leg and got quite frightened doing things like jumps and tricks.

The past 6 months I have been working really hard on my stamina and strength. It's been really great being able to work with choreographers again and being able to learn solo’s again.

The last two months, I’ve been so grateful to be able to return to the stage and compete again A real dream come true for me as a one doctor told me I’d never be able to return to dancing ever again I’m so grateful for my beautiful mum who has helped me through everything She has taken me to weekly physio appointments, doctors’ appointments, my surgery, MRI appointments and being my main coach on helping me return to dancing

She has encouraged me to keep trying and to not give up on returning to dance, she is my best friend I’m so grateful to be where I am and am most excited to be returning to Showcase Nations in January!

When I was at home, stuck in bed this was my ultimate goal that I wasn’t sure if I would be able to achieve
