A WORD FROM ...

Dear Readers, I am delighted to present our first e-magazine for customers and partners. Our goal? To bring you testimonials, market trends, new products, and service offers coupled with the passion shared by all players in the wine and spirits sector.

I became Managing Director of Amcor Capsules just a few months ago, and I soon realized how this passion for wine and spirits is at the very core of our teams' dedication to providing the best possible service to our customers.

Personally, throughout my career I have appreciated how, despite being cultural markers, wine and spirits transcend cultural differences through the intensity of the emotions they inspire. I'm originally from Lyon, the temple of French gastronomy "irrigated by three great rivers, the Rhône, the Saône, and the Beaujolais," as Léon Daudet put it (as well as a great many sumptuous Rhône and Bourgogne vintages, of course). I also had the pleasure of discovering the passion inspired by wine and spirits while living abroad, in the countries where my career took me. Such as China, where the emerging wine culture contrasts with the ancestral culture of their "famous" spirit Baijiu. Or Spain, where the ancient, sundrenched wine culture needs no introduction.

But the diversity of wine cultures ultimately merges into infinite passion of all players for their terroir, their heritage, their identities, their iconic brands. That is the true DNA of our profession.

Today, we are living through an unprecedented health crisis that has had a profound impact on all forms of social life and, of course, the world of entertainment. The last six months have been challenging for many in our sector, and the future is so hard to predict that our customers have to contend with many areas of uncertainty. It is therefore essential for them to be able to count on their trusted partners.

CHATONNET VINEYARDS

Chatonnet Vineyards and Amcor: an excellent partnership.

I

n 1967, André and Jeanine Chatonnet purchased the Haut-Chaigneau vines. Since then, the winery has continuously improved. At that time, the structure lay in ruins. Today, the vines of the Château Haut-Chaigneau cover 30 hectares and stand proudly between two great Bordeaux designations: Saint-Emilion and Lalande-dePomerol. Pascal Chatonnet, André and Jeanine's son who's also nicknamed the "wine alchemist," is now at the helm of the Château.

An option for restaurateurs

The wines of the Château Haut-Chaigneau win awards and medals on a regular basis, and they showcase the qualities of three varieties: Merlot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. Each of these varieties brings body, finesse, complexity, and aromatic intensity to the 150,000 bottles produced each year by Chatonnet Vineyards.

Today, Chatonnet Vineyards are among the great properties covered by the Protected Designation of Origin, Lalande-de-Pomerol.

Besides a major distribution network in France and abroad, the wines are sold by numerous wine merchants. They are also to be found at the tables of a great many prestigious restaurants.

Chatonnet Vineyards and Amcor have been partners for some time. "We have been using the EASYPEEL capsule for two years now. At first, the capsule was used on a trial basis. The trial worked so well that we carried on using this solution," said Andréa Giraud, Head of Marketing.

In the first year, EASYPEEL proudly adorned all the vintages produced by the vineyard. Now it is reserved exclusively for the Château's most prestigious vintages, a "wiser choice for a highend capsule." These vintages are Château HautChaigneau, La Sergue, and L'Archange. This choice reflects the nature of the collaboration between Amcor Capsules and Chatonnet Vineyards.

Andréa Giraud, Head of Marketing at Chatonnet Vineyards, says: "At first, we decided to use EASYPEEL for restaurateurs." She explained that they are a major target for Chatonnet Vineyards, who wanted to offer "a suitable solution […] for restaurateurs, as well as wine merchants and sommeliers."

Hence, it was essential to offer a solution that made it possible to open our bottles more quickly and without cutting oneself.

Moreover, Andréa Giraud told us that EASYPEEL was also held in high regard by other target groups for Chatonnet Vineyards, particularly cafés, hotels, restaurants, and end consumers. Amcor and Selinko join forces with the vineyard of the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in China

I

n 2009, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) purchased land in the Qui Shan Valley in Northeast China. This was how the Long Dai vineyard was born.

Collaborating with local farmers, importing barrels from Pauillac and, most importantly, banking on excellence! 10 years later, the first Long Dai vintage is ready for market. This first Chinese vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, the emblematic variety of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), with Cabernet Franc and Marselan.

2,500 crates were produced. That is 30,000 bottles, all of which have already been sold.

FTS: "Being a member of the technical service team is like being a big brother for our customers."

You must have to travel as part of your job?

I travel a great deal because I cover a vast territory that extends from North to South America. You need to be trilingual to do this job because some customers in this territory can only communicate in Spanish. Fortunately, my wife is from Colombia and I learned to speak Spanish with her. This is a great advantage for me when I visit Mexican and Latin American customers.

Could you say a few words to introduce yourself?

My name is Daniel Lacombe and I've been working at Amcor in Saint-CĂŠsaire for 23 years now. I started out as a mechanic, and later joined the Field Technical Service (FTS), where I still work today. I was the first FTS representative in North America. The position already existed in France.

Faced with growing demand from customers needing support for aluminum closures in North America, we decided to create a position in SaintCĂŠsaire, Canada.

Can you describe what's involved in your work and daily tasks?

Being a member of the technical service team is like being a big brother for our customers. We help them to find the right product, i.e., the capsule and the right bottling equipment to go with it. If they already have their bottles or closures, we are available to answer questions concerning product characteristics and how to use them on their bottling lines. We can also visit a customer for the first bottling, to ensure that the machine settings are correct and that the process takes place in good conditions and in accordance with the product's quality specifications. The end product is the customer's satisfaction and we ensure that the final result suits them. We also provide on-site training for our customers, where we teach their technicians and bottling line employees how to configure the machines used for our products.

What part of your work do you like the most?

I would say it's probably meeting new people and feeling like what I'm doing is useful. Most of the time when customers contact us, they're dealing with some problem and can't find a solution for it.

When I lead them in the right direction, customers are very grateful and tell me so, which gives me a sense of accomplishment.

Why would you say that customers appreciate working with the Amcor FTS teams?

When customers choose to work with Amcor, they are pleasantly surprised by the quality of service they receive. When they're faced with a problem, they know that help is just a phone call away. Here, we have a laboratory and equipment to assess every type of difficulty they could encounter. We can find solutions, or we can travel quickly to their site to provide them with our support and expertise. It translates into real added value for our customers, and they realize this because they know this service isn't available from every supplier.

Finally, can you tell us a little about yourself?

What are your hobbies and interests?

I've been married for 21 years and I have a 16-yearold daughter. I love the outdoors. I enjoy fishing and motor sports like motorcycling or off-roading. In my free time, I take my bike out for a ride, whether it be on the highway or out in the forest.

Bourbon, a whiskey forged by history

FOCUS ON...

The history of American whiskey American whiskey first appeared in the 15th century, when a growing number of Northern Europeans immigrated to North America. At the time, the only alcoholic drinks made by the Native Americans came from fermented fruit, and the Scottish and Irish immigrants didn't want to give up their favorite drink: whiskey. It wasn't easy for farmers to find exactly the right ingredients to make it. Only a limited quantity of barley would grow in their soil, yielding poor harvests. The farmers decided to switch to corn, which was cultivated in large quantities by the Native Americans, and they soon discovered that they could distill a mixture of corn, barley, rye, and wheat to make spirits.

And that is how the first rural American whiskey distilleries appeared.

The origins of bourbon Bourbon owes its name to the French assistance received during the Revolutionary War. As a homage to the French Royal Family of the Bourbons (the House of Bourbon), a county on the border between the modern-day states of Kentucky and Indiana was named Bourbon. Whiskey from this region later became famous for its high quality and was also called "Bourbon." Although Bourbon's county of origin no longer exists, there is still a county called Bourbon in Kentucky, though there are no longer any distilleries there.

What makes an American whiskey a bourbon?

Many people think bourbon has to be produced in Kentucky because of the history associated with its name, and because 95% of the global supply comes from Kentucky, though this is just a myth. In reality, it can be produced anywhere in the United States.

In 1964, the American Congress adopted a resolution laying down the conditions under which an American whiskey could be called a bourbon.

For a whiskey to be called a bourbon, at least 51% corn needs to be used. It must be distilled to less than 80%, must not contain any additives, and must be stored in new charred oak barrels. There isn't any minimum aging time for bourbon but, to be designated as "straight bourbon," it needs to have aged for at least 2 years.

What are the main flavors of bourbon, and how do they differ from whiskey?

The difference in taste between whiskey and bourbon is very slight, but other whiskeys like scotch tend to have a stronger smoky flavor, while bourbon usually has sweeter notes. Bourbon is often characterized by oak and notes such as vanilla, caramel, and spices.

It also has a softer texture than other whiskeys.

American Honey – Wild Turkey distillery The Campari Group chose STELCAP, the aluminum closure from Amcor, for its American Honey Bourbon Whiskey.

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail The Kentucky Bourbon Trail was created in 1999 by the Kentucky Distillers' Association. It's an entertaining and informative way to visit 38 Kentucky distilleries along a 60-mile route. The main activities along the route include tastings, distillery visits, activities with historical themes, bars, restaurants, and more. Revenue continues to increase in the Kentucky bourbon industry. Bourbon has generated 17,500 jobs in Kentucky and attracts millions of tourists to the state of Kentucky year after year.

The golden age of bourbon Bourbon's popularity is on the rise, with new artisan distilleries opening up on an almost daily basis, while large companies are investing in the acquisition of brown alcoholic drinks and developing the production of these drinks. In fact, last year saw a 5.3% increase in bourbon production, totaling 23.29 million nine-liter crates in the United States. Bourbon is also exported around the world, with Japan and Spain being the biggest importers in 2019 with over 5.3 million gallons each. Bourbon is used in several cocktails like the Old Fashioned or the Kentucky Mule, though many say the best way to enjoy bourbon is on the rocks. Cheers!
