We reflect on recent times, when we could not gather, while at the same time expressing gratitude for your ever-present support and generosity. YOU are true Wildlife Heroes! Tropical Safari will take us across continents to celebrate our commitment to the Zoo, wildlife and the planet we share. Thank you for joining us and being a special part of it all. Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society is proud to honor JoAnna and Stephen Myers as Gala Stewardship Award recipients for more than two decades of standing for wildlife and supporting our Zoo. As lead sponsor of the jaguar habitat, this space at the Zoo is meaningful to the Myers family, and their connection extends beyond the namesake. Stephen was involved from day one in welcoming orphaned Panamanian jaguar Fiona to her forever home and bringing her natural environment to life at Palm Beach Zoo. The Myers believe the Zoo plays an integral part in our community by providing education and preservation, as well as family experiences and enjoyment. With Stephen’s 20 years of service on our Board of Directors, his family steadfastly supports creating a Zoo for the generations ahead and saving species in the wild. “Without a commitment to conservation, philanthropy and our environment, there would be no future. We all need to pay it forward in some capacity.” We celebrate JoAnna and Stephen as our 2022 Gala Stewardship Award recipients and extend our deepest gratitude for their immense generosity to the Zoo.

DEBBIE AND PHILIPPE DAU M A N Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society gratefully acknowledges Debbie and Philippe Dauman as Friends of the Zoo. The Daumans discovered Palm Beach Zoo with their family, including their first grandchild. “We enjoy being up-close with the animals, especially the monkeys, the young tigers and the Aldabra tortoises,” said Debbie and Philippe. “Our granddaughter particularly delighted in feeding sweet potatoes to the gentle giants during the Aldabra experience on our tour! We appreciate the habitats that the Zoo has so well-adapted for each species.” The Daumans believe in building the Zoo of the future and that “expanding the Zoo’s scope and reach would bring happiness to so many.” They emphasize the Zoo’s important role in our community in both educating and inspiring youth, taking great pleasure in observing the joy of all children and their families from the many parts of the Palm Beach area. “We believe the Zoo is a wonderfully fun, educational asset for the entire fast-growing Palm Beach community.” On behalf of the Zoo’s animal residents, members, staff and leadership, we thank Debbie and Philippe for their generosity and support for wildlife.

MARGARET AND MICHAEL PICOT TE We are thrilled to honor Margaret and Michael Picotte as long-standing friends of Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society who are always there to support our greatest needs. For the Picottes, their connection to the Zoo was solidified during visits with their children as they grew up. Margi and Michael believe in making sure all children in our community have an opportunity to visit the Zoo, just as their family has over the years. They feel strongly about protecting animals and becoming a supporter at a young age. “You have to educate kids about the world, the environment and animals, and how we protect them.” The Picottes’ impact is heartfelt, steadfast and extensive, from dedicating a Mayan Plaza statue in honor of their children to replacing commissary equipment that was lost during hurricane season and, most recently, their incredibly generous gift to help build Tiger Forest. On a Zoo tour, the Picottes experienced the sheer joy of their grandson walking in the same steps as their children did years ago. We are extraordinarily grateful to Margi and Michael Picotte and their family for many years of generosity and support.

New to South Florida, the Tannenbaums have a long history as active supporters of wildlife organizations. Margo McKnight President and CEO Palm Beach County is rich in diversity and treasures so precious their mere existence is the story of legends. It is here that the Gulf Stream kisses our shores, carrying an array of animals from giant whales to tiny coral larvae in her warm slow-moving current. This current is a giant loop swooshing up from the Caribbean, past our beaches, all the way across the ocean to Northern Europe and back down in a huge gyre. Its impact of moving marine creatures around the Atlantic is matched only by its warming effect on the land it flows past. We are unique as it comes remarkably close to our beaches, providing an astounding diversity of life and healthy marine habitats.
On land, we boast of the largest remaining subtropical wilderness in the United States that’s home to a huge diversity of species, including our beloved Florida panther and snail kites. Our dream is that flamingos will once again grace this river of grass. Can you imagine? Pa-hay-okee, or “grassy waters” as the Seminoles aptly named the Everglades, is not just critical for wild things. It also provides fresh water to much of South Florida’s human communities. It truly needs to remain forever a giant glade. We are living between these superlatives of nature: ours to protect and ours to be inspired by. While your Zoo works hard to take care of species at the Zoo and in the wild, our most important “animal” is YOU. We exist to inspire people to take action to ensure nature is thriving. Our local conservation work (such as our Florida panther, swallow-tailed kite and coral initiatives) is of the utmost importance and yielding meaningful benefits for wild Florida. In seeing this local progress, we are ready to heed the call of other species needing immediate help. Whether they are nestled in a sand dune close to home or halfway around the globe, we must follow our mission and work diligently to save wildlife in wild places. There is one particular species that recently caught our attention.
At 18 feet tall, weighing in at more than one-and-a-half tons, and adorned with dramatic brown and white patterns, the giraffe is “winking out” of existence without anyone paying attention.
It is now clear that many populations of giraffes have been in a sharp decline without most of the world noticing. Scientists are calling it a “silent extinction.” In 2018, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) elevated the reticulated giraffe from Vulnerable to Endangered status, reflecting a population decline of about 80% over the previous 30 years.

Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society now joins other Association of Zoos and Aquariums® (AZA) institutions (including Houston Zoo, Nashville Zoo, Columbus Zoo, Phoenix Zoo and Denver Zoo) in supporting the Somali Giraffe Project. The Somali Giraffe Project works closely with the Kenya Wildlife Service to focus on conservation and recovery of reticulated giraffes, which are now only found in pockets of Eastern Kenya and adjacent regions in Somalia.
The problems facing these giraffes and the solutions may sound familiar to you, as the giraffes face similar pressures to many of our Florida species.
To protect most species, we need to understand their travel patterns, just as we do with our swallow-tailed kites, snail kites and Florida panthers. Palm Beach Zoo now provides satellite-tracking collars for giraffes within the Somali Giraffe Project. The collected data will assist scientists in determining where these animals are traveling and what hazards they encounter along the way. It will also provide information on important food sources, herd compositions and areas needing habitat restoration. This is just the beginning of this new partnership, and we are in very good company as we team up with the other AZA institutions. We hope these gentle giants will inspire you to act, too. BRIAN BAYERL – PRODUCER, DIRECTOR, CINEMATOGRAPHER, WRITER & EDITOR Brian Bayerl is a multi-award-winning documentary filmmaker, cinematographer and editor. His work has premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, South by Southwest (SXSW), and the Tribeca Film Festival. His work can be seen in such shows as Showtime’s “The Circus,” Epix’s “Fiasco” and CBS Sports. He works with numerous community organizations such as Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society, Nova Southeastern University, and the Florida Panthers Hockey Club. In 2017, he was recognized by the Knight Foundation as a Focus on Florida Filmmaker. His newest project, “The Day the Music Died” with Grammy-Nominated Filmmaker Mark Moormann, will be in theaters in June and streaming on Paramount Plus on July 1. WHITNEY BYLIN – PRODUCER & WRITER Whitney Bylin has worked in film since 1993: developing, producing, directing and writing documentary programs. Her work has aired on National Geographic Channel, Discovery, PBS, The History Channel, among others. Her projects have taken her everywhere from the Outback of Australia to film saltwater crocodiles to the highest peaks of Ecuador to film struggling climbers: from Zimbabwe to film sick elephants, and to Uruguay to interview survivors of the famous plane crash in the Andes that resulted in heroic feats of survival (and was the basis of the book and film “Alive”). Whitney has served on the board of Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society since 2008. She has tirelessly led the Zoo’s Events Committee for 10 years, including a role as past Gala Chairman and Honorary Chairman. This is Whitney’s sixth year donating her time to produce the Gala video. JAMES PATTERSON – NARRATOR James Patterson is the world’s bestselling author. His enduring fictional characters and series include Alex Cross, the Women’s Murder Club, Michael Bennett, Maximum Ride, Middle School, and Ali Cross, along with such acclaimed works of narrative nonfiction as “Walk in My Combat Boots;” “E.R. Nurses;” and his autobiography, “James Patterson by James Patterson.” Bill Clinton (“The President Is Missing”) and Dolly Parton (“Run, Rose, Run”) are among his notable literary collaborators. For his prodigious imagination and championship of literacy in America, Patterson was awarded the 2019 National Humanities Medal. Cleo (mom) and Priscilla (dad), the Zoo’s porcupine pair, welcomed two adorable boys and one spunky girl. As these giant porcupines are important to ecosystems in Africa, they are also important to Palm Beach Zoo. Our guests are thrilled to see them, especially when they are walking around the Zoo with their zoologists. They thrive in human care and seem to enjoy socializing with their humans (zoologists).
