By Crystal Manich
Wagner’s Das Rheingold is an allegory. The story’s foundation hearkens back to Norse mythology by way of the ancient Greeks. The gods, though powerful, are fallible. In them, we see our imperfect selves, struggling with the same decisions and choices that hasten our inevitable fate.
In this sparse production for Opera Santa Barbara, the focus is on the simple concept of lavish greed and highfalutin existence. The visual theme for the production is inspired by the grandiose and decadent attitudes of 1980’s United States. The color palette goes from lavish and grand to dark and foreboding. Each character has a unique personality according to their clothing. In this world, everyone has a place, but not all possess power.
Alberich, an unexpected danger to the world, makes himself powerful by renouncing the one thing that many of us cannot imagine: love. The Rheinmaidens who fail to guard the gold that has been entrusted to them begin to understand that they are not invincible. Their games give passage to Alberich’s greed.
The leader of the gods, Wotan, is faced with a predicament. He owes the giants Fafner and Fasolt payment for a grand hall they built for him in the sky. Wotan’s wife, Fricka, constantly reminds him that his masculine greed has led to backdoor agreements that have led to her sister Freia becoming collateral for the new construction. Wotan’s fate, and that of all the gods, rests in obtaining the gold from Alberich. But, like most tragic stories, once the gold has been taken from its rightful place in the Rhein river, the endless cycle of hubris ensues. The ring allows for endless power and it is seductive.
In all, Das Rheingold teaches us that no one is free from the fetters that come with endless power. The responsibility is great and the temptation to only serve one’s own interest is a trap. It is through these lessons that we as an audience see ourselves in a clearer light and can begin to shape our own destiny.

Dear Friends:
Another first for Opera Santa Barbara: Wagner’s Das Rheingold, the first opera in “The Ring Cycle”. One of the most luminary and controversial opera composers, Richard Wagner (1813-1883), created a world full of new and exciting sounds. He was revered and disdained in his lifetime both for his political and artistic ideas and has continued to be so ever since. Though he and Verdi were famously born the same year, Verdi outlived him by 18 years. Wagner gives us musical sounds that surprise, tantalize and give rise to the stories of the Nordic Gods. Das Rheingold, being the first of his famous “Ring Cycle” is the shortest and is a great introduction to the incredible music of Wagner.
This production, just under two hours in length, was created by Jonathan Dove and Graham Vick in 1990 for the Birmingham City Touring Opera and brings the “Ring Saga” down to just 9 hours from its original of 18 and its orchestra of 110 musicians to 18, all without losing its intrigue, volatility and gorgeous music. We hope this will open your hearts to the sheer joy of the music of Richard Wagner and entice you to listen to the 3 other operas of “The Ring Cycle” as well as the other operas of this incredible composer.
Without the support of our sponsors and all of you, we would not be able to continue our path of providing opera for our community. Today we are particularly grateful to our Santa Barbara County Season Sponsor, the Elaine F. Stepanek Foundation, and for the individual sponsors of this opera: Production sponsor: Bob Weinman, Stage Director: Eric Small, Conductor: Mary Dorra, Woton: Dana White, Freia: Dan & Romy Reicker, Alberich: Michael & Christine Holland, Fricka: Simon & Euzetta Williams, Loge: Nick Burlett & Jessie Dove, Donner: David Mason, Erda: Bella Domani, Rheinmaidens: Margaret Arvey & Michael Sheldon
We hope you find our production of Das Rheingold exciting, intriguing and enjoyable. We have brought together an incredible group of singing actors to portray this story of power and justice. This has been a difficult year for us and for the world. We are proud that we were able to produce 3 fully staged operas throughout the year. Thank you for your support and for being part of this wonderful family.
With best wishes,

presents

Opera SB premiere
In the depths of the Rhein, the three Rheinmaidens guard the Rheingold, a treasure of immeasurable value. The Nibelung dwarf, Alberich, is dazzled by the sight of the golden treasure. The Rheinmaidens explain that whoever wins the gold and forges it into a ring will gain power over the world, but only by renouncing love. Frustrated by his unsuccessful attempts to catch one of the maidens, Alberich curses love and steals the gold.
Wotan, Lord of the Gods, is reproached by his wife, Fricka. He has promised to give her sister Freia, Goddess of Youth and Love, to the giants Fasolt and Fafner in return for their building a castle fortress for the gods. When the giants demand their reward after finishing the castle, Loge, God of Fire, suggests an alternative payment—the ring that Alberich has forged from the Rheingold and his other treasures. The giants agree, and Wotan and Loge leave for the underground home of the Niebelungs.
Alberich mocks the Gods. Loge asks for a demonstration of the Tarnhelm, a magic helmet that can transform the holder into anything, including invisibility. Alberich turns himself into a dragon, then into a toad, which the Gods then easily capture. The dwarf is forced to summon the Nibelungs to pile up the gold. Wotan wrests the ring from his finger. Shattered, Alberich curses the ring—ceaseless worry and death shall be the destiny of its bearer.
The giants return and accept the gold. Wotan refuses to part with the ring. Erda, Goddess of the Earth, appears and warns him that possession of it will bring about the end of the Gods. Wotan reluctantly gives the ring to the giants, and Alberich’s curse claims its first victim as Fafner kills his brother in a dispute over the treasure. As the voices of the Rheinmaidens are heard lamenting the loss of their gold, the Gods walk toward their new home, which Wotan names Valhalla.

Kostis Protopapas was named General Director of Opera Santa Barbara in December 2017, after two-and-a-half seasons as Artistic Director.
During his time as Artistic Director and principal conductor, Kostis brought a unified vision to OSB’s musical and production values, strengthening the orchestra and chorus, engaging some of the country’s most promising young directors and singers, building a high-performing production team, and increasing focus on contemporary American opera. The result was productions of both familiar and new repertoire that are counted among the finest in the company’s history.
As General Director, Kostis grew the company’s staff from three to seven, assembling an enthusiastic group of overachievers sharing an appetite for innovation and the desire to strengthen the company’s bond with the community.
During 2018-19, the company’s 25th anniversary season, Kostis oversaw the sold-out Santa Barbara premiere of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin and a production of The Crucible that the Santa Barbara Independent hailed as “one of the season’s most exciting performances of any kind in Santa Barbara”; a 25th anniversary gala concert; and the company’s first-ever student matinee performance as well as its first ever Youth camp.
Under Kostis’ leadership Opera Santa Barbara saw the creation of the Santa Barbara Youth Opera, a program providing educational and performance opportunities for school-age children; the expansion of the company’s Chrisman Studio program to a season-long residency for emerging artists; an impressive growth in the company’s community engagement and educational activities throughout the Central Coast; and the runaway success of Operacurious, a new program that brings Young Professionals in Santa Barbara in contact with opera and its artists.
2016 saw the end of Kostis’ 15-year association with Tulsa Opera, during which he conducted 30 productions of a diverse repertoire extending from popular classics to contemporary American works. About his 2011 Barber of Seville performances, Alex Ross of The New Yorker wrote, “Most impressive was the fluid idiomatic playing of the orchestra… In any city, it’s rare to find a conductor that sets the right tempo so consistently that you stop noticing he’s there.”
Kostis has been an Assistant Conductor for the Lyric Opera of Chicago, LA Opera and Santa Fe Opera. At the Lyric Opera of Chicago, he also served as Assistant Chorus Master under Donald Palumbo for two seasons.
Born in Athens, Greece, Kostis Protopapas studied Archaeology and History of Art at the University of Athens before coming to the United States in 1993, on an Onassis Foundation scholarship, to study piano at The Boston Conservatory and conducting at Boston University. He became an American citizen in 2011. He loves living in Santa Barbara, and enjoys downtown restaurants, the Funk Zone’s tasting rooms, and sailing on the Santa Barbara Channel.

While there in 2019, she received an Outstanding Achievement in Opera award nomination for her performance of Cunegonde in Candide. In 2020, Ms. Snow was a finalist in Eugene Opera’s Diva Cage Match Competition, and a featured soprano for their virtual New Year’s Eve Gala Concert. She sang her first Adina in L’elisir d’amore with Opera Bend in 2019, and will reprise the role with The Southern Illinois Music Festival in 2022. Prior to COVID19, she was scheduled to debut at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall and at Carnegie Hall as the soprano soloist for Choirs of America’s Emerging Artists Series, and hopes to be performing there in 2022. Ms. Snow earned her MM in Vocal Performance from Indiana University, and her BM at the University of Oregon.

Heather Sterling has been designing and implementing wig and makeup looks for theater for the past 18 years. Pulling inspiration from history, nature, psychology and fashion creates the foundation for her designs. From the glamorous 18th century profiles of Manon to the magical creatures of Cunning Little Vixen makes designing for opera incredibly enjoyable. Recent wig and makeup designs with Opera Santa Barbara include Barber of Seville, The Crucible, Il Postino, Eugene Onegin and La Boheme
Heather also shares her time with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music as a Wig and Makeup Designer as well as a workshop educator in the craft of theatrical hair and makeup. Most recently, she worked with SFCM on a filmed version of Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss II and and an in-theater production of Joseph Bologne’s L’Amant-Anonyme. I am often asked which opera was my favorite which is a hard question to answer. I have loved them all and hated them all for one reason or another. I am happy to be part of this artform and proud of all that we have achieved together at Opera Santa Barbara.
When I am not traveling for work I love spending time with my wife Danielle, and our dog Marlee. I also love scuba diving and sailing.

Healing Community & Supporting Musicians
During Covid Opera SB began a new initiative to financially support area musicians and help local venues permitted to host live music. To date, over 40 individual performers and groups have benefited from Operation Eurydice payments and thousands of Santa Barbara residents and visitors have experienced the comfort of live music when we needed it most
We extend a heartfelt thanks to the John C. Mithun Foundation, our community partners and donors to OSB’s Performing Artists Fund for helping us keep music playing with more than 66 events featured at Roar & Pour, Balcony Jam Sessions and Opera SB Night Out.

More than 100 of the most talented classically trained musicians are in Santa Barbara for six weeks to study and perform with 65+ faculty and teaching artists.
75 concerts and public masterclasses through August 7
$10 Community Access tickets available for every event! Visit musicacademy.org or call 805-969-8787 to order today, M-F, 10 AM-5 PM.
