It gives us great joy to welcome you back to the Lobero for today’s performance. This show has been in the works since the curtain came down on our production of Handel’s Semele last January.
Our first Handle opera, Semele was an unqualified triumph. Presented in a compact 90-minute production incorporating scenery, digital projections, and a stylish 1920’s look, Semele turned out to be one of the best operas our company has ever produced. Above all, we knew we had witnessed the birth of a star: Santa Barbara-born soprano Jana McIntyre.
Agreeing on what repertoire to program is one of the most fun and hotly debated processes in an opera company’s annual cycle. Yet everyone who witnessed Semele agreed on one thing: our 2022-23 season needed a short, light-hearted work, full of vocal pyrotechnics, presented in a sassy, stylish production, starring Jana McIntyre. La scala di seta, a 90-minute romp by the master of bel canto comedy Rossini, updated to the 1930’s, and directed by the irrepressibly irreverent Josh Shaw, is just that show.
La scala di seta will have a second performance tomorrow at 10am, exclusively for school students. Thanks to generous support by the Eicholtz, Mithun, and Performing Arts Scholarship Foundations and the Music Performance Trust of the American Federation of Musicians, this performance is free to the students, and schools’ transportation costs are covered. Now that theaters and schools are finally back to normal operation, we couldn’t think of a better gift to young people than to experience in person the power of music, storytelling, and the human voice.
Tonight’s performance has been sold out for some time. We still have two amazing works left in our 2022-23 season: the contemporary drama An American Dream, set in the Pacific Northwest during World War 2, and The Valkyrie, second part of Wagner’s Ring saga, following up on the success of our 2021 production of Das Rheingold With only one performance at the Lobero Theater each, both of these shows are guaranteed to sell out. There is nothing that gives me more joy than directing a silly bel canto comedy. And Rossini is the clear master of the genre. Donizetti, who wrote far more comedies, and operas overall, is a worthy opponent, but in truth I find him at his best, rather his funniest, when he is clearly imitating or even poking fun at Rossini in works such as Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali. No one is going to put La scala di Seta, a relatively simple and short opera, on par with masterpieces like Il Barbiere di Siviglia or La Cenerentola, but the genius is already evident. The man knew how to write for comedy. From the sparkling overture (which I decided not to stage, so it can simply be enjoyed for the beautiful music it is) to the final ensemble, the score is full of little gems, many of which Rossini used again in later works. But I’m just the director, so why am I talking about the music? I think it is because Rossini’s music is in fact the drive behind all my directing decisions. The libretto is simple, to put it kindly, and there is scarcely a joke to be found in the text. But then there is Rossini. He masterfully weaves together instruments, voices, rhythms, dynamics, and more in such a way that fun is inescapable, that comedy is implicit. For me, new inspiration is always just one listen away with Rossini. There is always one more layer to discover, one instrument I never noticed before, one more beat to find, one more bit to time out.
About this “silk ladder”... Not knowing this opera well, I was surprised to find out the titular item is hardly mentioned in the libretto. And there is certainly no explanation as to why the ladder is made of silk. (Could there be a worse or more expensive fabric for climbing?) For those about to look it up, and I know you are... the title comes from a contemporary French opéra-comique called L’Échelle de soie by François-Antoine-Eugène de Planard with music by Pierre Gaveaux. (There. We can all sleep tonight.) But I couldn’t see having the title of the show not be explained, at least in some little way. Thus, I’ve moved the action from a country home in rural Paris to a fine tailoring and fabric shop, circa 1930, where one could conceivably have several extra yards of silk just lying around to make a ladder. Giulia, our ingenue, who is under the guidance of her tutor in all matters matrimonial -- because, opera... -- works in the shop and lives above in a small apartment. It’s a family affair with her tutor owning the shop and her cousin working there as well. The usual servant, admirer, and secret husband are all there, as expected. If you’ve seen any of my work, you know I love my toys, whether they be stools, handkerchiefs, puppets, muskets, swords, or anything else that can be choreographed. A clothing shop, loaded with gadgets, gimmicks, and hiding places galore, seamed a “fitting” location, “tailor made” for my particular brand of bel canto comedy. I hope it leaves you in stitches. (But I still have no explanation for why the damn ladder is made of silk.)

As the opera starts, Giulia is sending off Dorvil before the shop opens, but Germano, another employee at the shop, arrives early. As soon as Giulia gets rid of Germano, Lucilla, Giulia’s cousin, comes in. When Giulia is at last able to have a word with her husband, we learn that Dormont has arranged a marriage for Giulia to Blansac, a rich friend of Dormont. Giulia has the idea to pass Blansac off to Lucilla instead. Dorvil tells Blansac that he will have no luck with Giulia, but the suitor sees this as a challenge, and bets Dorvil that he will succeed. The husband reluctantly agrees, in order to test his wife’s fidelity. However Giulia has had the idea of attempting to seduce Blansac to find if he is good enough for her cousin. Confusion reigns. Later, Blansac, always the flirt, puts up little defense to Lucilla’s advances. Germano, drunken and confused, tells Blansac about the silk ladder and a midnight rendezvous, which he assumes is between Giulia and Blansac. Germano then tells Lucilla about the late night meeting. Jealous, Lucilla hides to catch Blansac with her cousin.
Germano also hides to learn the ways of the great Blansac. One after another, Dorvil, then Blansac, then even Dormont scale the ladder and once all the hiding parties are discovered, Giulia and Dorvil are forced to confess that they are married already, which allows Blansac to propose to and be accepted by Lucilla.

Named in recognition of the support of Sarah and Roger Chrisman, the Chrisman Studio Artist Program began in 2007 with the purpose of identifying and developing talented young opera performers. For more than a decade, the program has provided singers, as well as coaches, with high-level performance opportunities and valuable training. These performers work with top industry directors, conductors, and coaches in masterclasses, coachings, and public performances including cover and mainstage role assignments. Studio Artists Alumni are in high demand and have performed at companies around the US including the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Washington National Opera, the Santa Fe Opera, and abroad with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro Regio, Opernhaus Zürich, Bregenzer Festspiele, Hong Kong Opera, and the Aix-en-Provence Festival.

Wellbeing has many sides. I find many of them here, including fitness and aquatics, tai chi, bridge, fine dining, art, music and more. I have cleared the path to find my heart’s desire and enjoy the freedom of a true community.
Over the last year we have made some changes to our ticket pricing and policies. Some of our new practices differ from those of other arts organizations, and depart from long-established industry norms. Some patrons have expressed confusion or curiosity about how we do things now, and the reasons behind our decisions. Here are some frequently asked questions and the answers.
Q: How much do tickets to Opera SB cost?
A: Anywhere between $25 and $249, depending on the manner and time of purchase, and seating preference.
Q: What are “YOU DECIDE!” Tickets?
A: These are name-your-own-price tickets. A minimum price of $25 applies. Over time we increase the minimum price, and You Decide! Tickets are usually discontinued about 10 days before the show. YOU DECIDE! Tickets are available online only.
Q: Who can buy YOU DECIDE! Tickets?
A: Anyone! There are no restrictions. We want everyone who wants to attend the opera to be able to make their own decision about the dollar value of the experience, according to their interest and circumstances.
Q: Why should anyone buy fully-priced tickets?
A: Patrons should buy Fully-priced tickets if:
• They want premium seats (Loge and Boxes at the Granada, and Premium Orchestra at both Granada and Lobero)
• Want to select their own seats. (YOU DECIDE! patrons are seated at the discretion of Team OSB and the Box Office.)
• Fully-priced tickets are available online, by phone, or in-person at the Granada and Lobero Box Offices.
Q: Do you have senior, student, group, and Community tickets?
A: No. The YOU DECIDE! Tickets have replaced all those programs. However, we do offer free tickets to students 8-18. Please email info@operasb.org to inquire.
Q: Can I buy $25 tickets on the day of the show?
A: No. Our ticket prices go up as the day of the show approaches. Price-sensitive patrons are encouraged to make their plans and buy their tickets early.
