The building itself is made up of twelve reused shipping containers (the largest shipping container project in Costa Rica) whose exterior will remain true to their original purpose, giving the project an industrial look. All the cut-outs from the containers were also reused to make furniture, such that none of the material was wasted. The interior of the structure was kept clean and efficient with floor to ceiling windows in communal spaces and smaller windows in working areas. The arrangement of the containers was also strategic in that the second-floor containers, supported by v-shaped columns, were positioned to maximize the views of the scenic mountains.

KMD was hired to design the Costa Rican headquarters of the Canadian waste management company Ebi, after having been already previously commissioned to design their waste management facility. The lot had an existing house on it that was transformed into an office space and the new building features a kitchen, a patio and storage rooms. We connected both the new and the old with a staircase, and painted the railings blue to really highlight this vertical connection. We wanted to ensure we were capitalizing on the stunning views of the valleys and so we kept the building quite open allowing for a lot of natural light to enter the building. As well the open scheme allows for cross ventilation which is important as there is no air conditioning in the building. We created a skylight in the reception area to offer more light creating a welcoming area for visitors. Beams were utilized to create an element mimicking a pergola. This is a feature that has come to be adored by the employees as they get to see the changing movement of the light throughout the day.

It begins with a sequence of industrial sheds in which workshop, maintenance activities, and product storage can be developed. This first stage is covered by a façade that generates different degrees of transparency in terms of establishing a dialogue with the environment. It projects a primary axis that cuts through the field from start to finish, joining the different buildings and living spaces.

Always in search of the avant-garde. KMA created this stunning showroom for Toyota. It consists of a glass box that opens outwards. This opening has been established as a mechanism for adaptation and dialogue with the surrounding environment. Our aim was to create a dynamic network of interconnections, where the customers’ needs are the priority. We created flexible and dynamic spaces, with proportions that optimize the energy flow within them, thus stimulating the five senses of the users. The quality of light and color function as generators of comfortable environments in which the different activities of the business are carried out. Among these, are service workshops, administrative offices, areas of sale and exhibition of vehicles, among others.

The purpose of the design was to reflect an innovative, transparent and solid company. Symetrical, linear and transparent volume invites the user into a open space where sales, vehicles maintenance and customer relations interact in a clean flow between its functions.

The project is dedicated to transportation vehicles (police, firemen, ambulance, buses.) Located in a 7000 sq m property CT3 has the first assembly workshop for trucks and trailers. The designed included the master plan, process design and the transportation vehicles dealer. As well as their administrative office.

This project seeks to unify all the activities of the company in the same terrain, under a single quality standard and by using simple volumetric elements. We also sought to maintain and strengthen the brand image by using orthogonal shapes, volumes and materials that express the project´s contemporary style.

We intervened in the design of the VMG building during the gray work stage. Its pure and solid volumes are broken up through the presence of holes, which let the building fully breathe. Internal gardens are integrated through every level, and a central vertical chamber is used to inject natural light into most of the spaces. The use of color highlights the stairwell and elevators, bringing vitality to the different accesses. The building is crowned by a volumetric that invites the landscape to be an important protagonist where, through water ponds and lush vegetation, a great “urban greenhouse “is born. Main Floor Plan

It was important to create a contemporary open concept space for this office. Previously the Cafsa employees where used to having closed off spaces and were not too comfortable with the idea of now having to share their work space however they have come to really enjoy the new open concept plan which has allowed them to share ideas and conversation easier. There is a meeting room which has been designed to be transparent by utilizing glass. Glass can be seen all over the office, however wood was also used to invite warmth into the contemporary space via the floors and the walls.

Punta Coco is a project that enhances the concept of merging the outdoors and indoors living experience, allowing its users to fully experiment its natural surroundings. Its curved shape is a design strategy taken to mimic the organic natural forms and a way of creating a dialogue between the building and the immediate context. The building is laid out in three different modules which hold various apartment typologies for today’s multifunctional families. These modules are connected by a central garden that acts as a natural articulator and lung for the building. This space also holds the most important recreational area with a pool and a sundeck which allows the guests to relax and enjoy the natural scenery.

This yoga and meditation centre is all about clarity, peace of mind and tranquility. It is for these reasons that we needed to have a neutral and clean design for the interior. KMA did this by sticking with a simple colour palette for the interior. A few times however, pops of colour were used only for details. It is a simple and contemporary design that is balanced by the use of wood textures which were included in order to add warmth to the space.

Pikeos is a Peruvian fusion restaurant, which mixes unique flavors based on the most representative cuisines in the world. KMD was hired to design Pikeos Restaurant. We wanted to introduce a fun but stylish concept to this restaurant space! Everything from the lighting, to the bar, to the finishes of the ceiling (which has been specially designed to mimic the movement of the ocean) has been carefully designed by our team. We utilized the color blue and had artistic impressions of fishes on the walls to highlight the fact that the restaurant a seafood restaurant and to give the space a feeling of bringing the ocean in. We also created appropriate divisions in the space to allow for privacy for the customers.

ARENAS DEL MAR Arenas del Mar is a luxury five-star beachfront resort in Costa Rica, located in the ever-popular tourist attraction, The Manuel Antonio National Park. The scope of the project included rejuvenating and modernizing the look and feel of the bar, reception, and pool area. KMD drew colour and materiality from the natural surroundings of the resort to create a design that blends seamlessly with the tropical landscape. The light hue of the flooring was chosen to evoke the sandy beach beyond, and the bar was envisioned as a sort of pixelated image of the stunning shoreline. The reception area brings the outside in by making use of the same contemporary teak wood lounge chairs and tables as are located on the beach, and the reception desk echoes the natural environment while adding just the right amount of playfulness to the project. KMD was truly able to achieve an organic and refined atmosphere in this lush coastal resort.

Green City is a housing project that consists of 61 lots, divided in two major sections: residential and commercial. The project has several green areas for recreation purposes as well as entertainment spaces. We care about nature and people, the wellbeing of children and animals are part of our daily life. This is why including spaces such as yoga decks, firepits, dog parks and walk ways where included in the master plan design We want to take people back to the old neighborhood style of living, we want our residents to live close to the natural environment and to share as a community. With this objective we created areas for different activities like playgrounds, a football field, two pools and a clubhouse with a gym, lounge and terrace. In Green City, living in harmony with nature is one of the most important things.

The challenge with Lote 9 was to create a building that would not have the traditional feel of an ordinary apartment building. We created a central courtyard so that there is cross ventilation throughout the building and so that natural light would come into the building from all the living areas. We were inspired by the tetris game to create a configuration that allowed some of the residents of the upper levels to have walkout basements. Playing with the natural topography we were able to have three floors in some areas rather than just two. The roof design on the buildings are shaped like an inverted pyramid which brings water into the courtyard, allowing for the greenery to stay lush.
TUNISIA KMD was hired by a recognized developer of hotels to design a hotel in Tunisia (North Africa). The clients were interested in introducing a contemporary tropical style that was full of amazing vantage points and this is exactly what we did. In addition the curvilinear form of the building gives it a soft and warm feeling adding an elegant visual flair to this modern building.
AURASOMA Aura‑Soma is a system of colour, plant and crystal energies that enhance happiness and vitality. Created using the highest quality organic and biodynamic ingredients the products bring ease, balance and calm to your energetic system. While strengthening and protecting the aura they empower and elevate. KMD was commissioned to design the head office of Aura Soma. We created a concept that paid close attention to chakras and energy flow, bringing high vibration spaces into the project.
