In its 42nd year, the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) will once again bring the world’s animation and the animation world together, for the largest festival of this kind in North America. The OIAF offers a rare chance to see every genre and style of animated films from major studios to independent filmmakers.

In the heart of Ottawa, you can watch, interact with, and learn about animation while making connections and having fun with animators, animation enthusiasts, and people who know a good time when they see one. Taking place from September 26-30, 2018 at the ByTowne Cinema, Arts Court, National Gallery of Canada, National Arts Centre, Chateau Laurier, and the magnificent new Ottawa Art Gallery, the OIAF serves up a steady, healthy dose of screenings, new technologies, workshops, panels, parties, and the world famous animator’s picnic and pumpkin carving contest.

OIAF 2018 OFFICIAL COMPETITION PRIZES AND AWARDS The Official Competition section of the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) consists of works selected by the Festival programming team of Chris Robinson and Keltie Duncan. This year, the OIAF received a total of 2469 entries from 80 different countries. Of those, 105 Short films, 7 Feature films and 5 VR projects were chosen for Competition. In addition, 41 Panorama films were chosen to represent the efforts of the Canadian, International, and Student communities. During the Festival, three official juries sit with the audience to judge the Short, Feature and Young Audience Competition screenings. The Short and Feature jury members are chosen from the international animation community. The Young Audience jury is comprised of Ottawa-area children. At its discretion, the International Jury may also award additional special prizes. The Jury has the right to withhold an award where no entry, in its view, meets the standards for recognition. On Saturday, September 29th at 7:30 pm, the Jury will announce the award-winning films during the OIAF’s Awards Ceremony at the National Gallery of Canada. A Best of Ottawa 2018 screening (a selection of the Festival’s award-winning films) will be screened on Sunday, September 30th at 7:00 pm and 9:00pm at the ByTowne Cinema.

OIAF 2018 : PRIX ET RÉCOMPENSES DE LA COMPÉTITION OFFICIELLE La sélection officielle du Festival international d’animation d’Ottawa se compose d’œuvres choisies par l’équipe de programmation, menée par Chris Robinson et Keltie Duncan. Cette année, l’OIAF a reçu au total 2469 inscriptions de films, provenant de 80 pays. Parmi celles-ci, 105 courts-métrages, 7 longs-métrages et 5 projets de RV (réalité virtuelle) ont été sélectionnés en compétition. Par ailleurs, 41 films ont été choisis hors-compétition pour mettre à l’honneur les projets canadiens, internationaux et étudiants. Pendant le festival, trois jurys officiels, mêlés au grand public lors des séances, jugent les courts-métrages, longs-métrages et films pour enfants en compétition. Les membres des jurys des courts et longs-métrages sont choisis parmi la communauté internationale de l’animation. Les jurys des films jeune public sont, eux, des enfants sélectionnés dans la région d’Ottawa. S’ils le jugent opportun, les membres du jury international peuvent également décerner des prix spéciaux supplémentaires. Ils peuvent, enfin, refuser de décerner un prix s’ils considèrent qu’aucun film sélectionné ne répond aux critères d’évaluation. Le samedi 29 septembre, à 19 h 30, le jury annoncera les films primés lors de la cérémonie de remise des prix au Musée des beaux-arts du Canada. La sélection des films primés sera projetée le dimanche 30 septembre au cinéma ByTowne à 19 h et 21 h.

GERBEN SCHERMER Since we first met in 1996, Gerben Schermer has been a guiding influence on my own curatorial philosophy at the OIAF. He taught me that I didn’t have to follow the standard path of salivating over conservative, technically polished works that looked pretty but said little. He inspired me to instead push and provoke the boundaries of animation. Through the Holland Animation Film Festival (HAFF) which Schermer ran from its beginning in 1985 until 2018 - he has always steered clear of trying to appeal to a mass audience. Yet, he’s done more than most animation curators to open up the often-hermetic doors of animation. Through his interest in art, his use of graphic novel artists to do posters (e.g. Joost Swarte, Chris Ware, etc.) mixed media events, and, more recently, his Expanded Animation series of art installations, he managed to create a bridge between the art, music and animation worlds. Schermer has always been one step ahead of other festivals, spotting trends (e.g. Russian, Estonian, Chinese animation). And despite his reputation, Schermer was never anti-commercial. In fact, until 2010, HAFF only had a competition for commissioned films. HAFF was the first festival to go to find cool ads, IDs, PSAs, music videos, and TV work. Schermer always respected and celebrated the artistic element of commissioned works. In celebration and recognition of a lifetime of passionate and unwavering commitment to the art of animation, we are pleased to welcome Schermer as this year’s Honorary President. Depuis notre première rencontre en 1996, Gerben Schermer a été une influence qui a guidé ma propre philosophie de conservateur au OIAF. Il m’a appris que je n’étais pas obligé de suivre la voie habituelle et de saliver devant des œuvres conservatrices et polies par la technique, qui étaient bien jolies, mais ne disaient pas grand-chose. Il m’a inspiré, au contraire, à pousser et à provoquer les frontières de l’animation. Par le festival du film d’animation de la Hollande (HAFF) — que Schermer organisa de son lancement en 1985, jusqu’en 2018 — il n’a jamais tenté de plaire à un auditoire de masse. Il a cependant réussi à en faire plus que la plupart des conservateurs d’animation pour ouvrir les portes souvent hermétiques de l’animation. De par son intérêt dans l’art, son emploi d’artistes de romans graphiques pour faire des affiches (p. ex. Joost Swarte, Chris Ware, etc.), des événement de médias mixtes, et, plus récemment, sa série d’installations artistiques Expanded Animation, il a pu créer un pont entre les mondes de l’art, de la musique et de l’animation. Schermer a toujours eu une longueur d’avance sur les autres festivals pour remarquer les tendances (p. ex., l’animation russe, estonienne, chinoise). Chintis Lundgren is an Estonian-born animator currently

living in Croatia. She studied fine arts at an alternative art school in Estonia called Academia Non Grata. Lundgren later taught herself animation and quickly gained attention in the animation world for her quirky music videos, PSAs, and short films featuring a light, absurdist tone and distinctive anthropomorphic characters. In 2011, Lundgren created her own animation studio, Chintis Lundgreni Animatsioonistuudio, and later co-founded Adriatic Animation. Her work (the award-winning shorts Life with Herman H. Rott and Manivald) has screened at numerous international animation festivals, including Annecy, Zagreb, and Ottawa.

Since 2010 he is lecturing on the history and theory of animation film at the University in Nova Gorica. In 2012 the Slovenian Cinematheque published his book “The Filmography of Slovene Animated Film 1952 – 2012”. In 2004 he founded the International Animation Film Festival Animateka, where he is since the artistic director.

Kelly Sears is an experimental animator that cuts up and

collages imagery from American culture and politics. Her award-winning films have screened at festivals such as Sundance, South by Southwest, American Film Institute, Tricky Women in Austria as well as retrospective programs of her short work at Anthology Film Archives in NYC, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Portland Art Museum, and the SF Cinematheque. Sears is currently an Assistant Professor of Film Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she teaches advanced filmmaking, animation, experimental documentary, and media archeology.

Quel est le sens de la vie? Ou du bonheur? On Happiness Road suit le cheminement de Chi, alors qu’elle cherche avec difficulté ses propres réponses à ces questions. Après avoir pourchassé son rêve américain, Chi retourne en Taïwan à la suite du décès de sa grand-mère. Elle est réunie avec sa famille sur le chemin du Bonheur, où elle vivait avant. En revivant ses souvenirs perdus, Chi est poussée à réfléchir à ce qu’elle a laissé derrière elle, et à ce qu’elle doit faire pour changer sa vie à partir de ce jour. Un film vibrant, cette autobiographie, première œuvre de la réalisatrice Sung Hsin-yin, se sert de l’animation afin de refléter visuellement et symboliquement la mémoire collective de la société Taïwanaise, de documenter ses changements et de questionner ses valeurs. Faisant écho des changements sociaux considérables qui se sont produits en Taïwan au cours des trois dernières décennies, ce film est un mélange inspirant de nostalgie, d’esthétique et d’histoire.

By reliving her lost memories, Chi is driven to reflect on what she left behind and what she must do to change her life going forward. A vibrant flick, this autobiography by firsttime director Sung Hsin-yin uses animation to visually and symbolically reflect the collective memory of Taiwanese society, documenting its changes and questioning its values. Echoing the sweeping social changes in Taiwan during the past three decades, the film is an inspiring blend of nostalgia, aesthetics, and history.

At the core of Seder-Masochism is Paley’s animated interview with her late father Hiram. Their conversation weaves around an innovative retelling of how Moses freed the Jewish people from the Egyptians. This complex, multi-layered 45-minute work is set in the late 19th century during Belgium’s colonization of the Congo Basin in West Africa. Divided into five chapters, the experience and effects of colonization are shown from a multitude of perspectives: a king (based on Belgium’s King Leopold II), slaves, a crooked, drunk businessman, and an army deserter. This Magnificent Cake! is an astonishing, sensitive and original stop motion work that eschews time and subtly drifts between reality and illusion as it explores the crushed dreams and lives caused by the disastrous, brutal and inhuman effects of colonialism on both the innocent and guilty, and the good and the awful. With dashes of magic realism, we are placed in a sort of dreamscape where we’re never quite sure where we are, and never quite sure if what the characters are experiencing is real or not. It’s wonderfully disorientating. Preceded by the duo’s acclaimed short film, Oh Willy... (2012)

COLLIDEOSCOPE - SPOTLIGHT IN COLLAGE ANIMATION COLLIDEOSCOPE - PLEINS FEUX SUR L’ANIMATION DE COLLAGE

We are living in an age of globalization and technological saturation. Images and sounds collide seemingly every second within our subconscious. It’s a time defined by fragmentation and disconnect. And while the animation industry blindly salivates over every shiny new technological toy, it’s an older, more traditional and much less sexy technique that offers the aptest reflection of modern society: collage. Collage art and film date back to the early 20th century (the earliest collages have roots in 12th century Japan). It was rooted in the age of consumerism where artists addressed an array of political and social issues by creating a carefully crafted collision of pre-existing images and sounds (e.g. photographs, film, texts) to generate new meanings and commentaries on the surrounding world. Collage has also pushed the boundaries of animation, by incorporating other artistic forms (e.g. photography, live action, experimental cinema, literature, found sound) while exploring an array of social, cultural and political issues. Collideoscope is a multi-part programme that will explore the history of collage animation films, ranging from retrospectives of Lewis Klahr and Stacey Steers to the ‘golden hits’ of collage pioneers Stan Vanderbeek, Terry Gilliam, Martha Colburn, Janie Geiser, Frank Mouris and many others. Alongside there will be a screening of contemporary collage films curated by OIAF 18 jury member, Kelly Sears. Chris Robinson Artistic Director

Nous vivons en un âge de la mondialisation et saturé de technologie. Les images et les sons se font entrer en collision chaque seconde dans notre subconscient. C’est un moment défini par fragmentation et déconnexion. Tandis que l’industrie de l’animation salit aveuglément à tous les jouets technologiques nouveaux et brillants, c’est une ancienne technique, plus traditionnelle et beaucoup moins attirant. Ça nous offre une réflexion la plus pertinente de la société moderne: le collage. L’art et le film de collage remontent au début du 20e siècle (les premiers collages ont des racines au Japon du 12e siècle). Il était enraciné dans un âge du consumérisme où les artistes abordaient des problèmes politiques et sociaux par créant soigneusement une collision élaborée des images et des sons préexistants (par exemple, les photographes, les films et les textes) pour générer les nouvelles significations et commentaires sur le monde. Par ailleurs, le collage a poussé les limites de l’animation, en intégrer les autres formes artistiques (par exemple, la photographie, l’action en direct, le cinéma expérimental, la littérature et le son trouvé) tout pendant qu’ils exploraient les problèmes sociaux, culturelles et politiques. Comic book heroes, pulp fiction protagonists, 1960s imagery meet and mingle with Ancient Gods, Film Noir, Sci-Fi, Leonard Cohen, the ghosts of Mad Men, and Douglas Sirk melodramas in Lewis Klahr’s mesmerizingly melancholic, 12-chapter, collage feature, 66. Made over a period of twelve years, 66 represents both time and space (the iconic Route 66). Throughout the film, sad, broken and lonely characters fecklessly roam the mental and physical roads of past and present urban landscapes desperately in search of something, a connection, or maybe a chance to grab that last moment before everything collapsed? Lewis Klahr will be in attendance during the festival.

Les moments les plus heureux de ma jeunesse, je les ai passés chez mes grands-parents. Mes classeurs en métal de souvenirs contiennent plusieurs dossiers des images, des sons et des odeurs de ces journées. Ils ont parfois l’impression d’être si réels, si près, si clairs. Mais, ils ne le sont pas, et je ne suis pas certain qu’ils ne l’aient jamais été. Peut-être sont-ils des clichés de vidéos maison ou de présentations de diapositives; peut-être des souvenirs racontés par d’autres membres de la famille. De tout ce que je crois désirer, qu’est-ce qui a réellement existé? La mémoire et la nostalgie sont des sœurs illégitimes et trompeuses de la fiction. Elles nous poussent à vouloir des choses qu’on ne peut jamais vraiment atteindre et qu’on n’a peut-être même jamais eues. Une intersection rompue entre la réalité, le consumérisme, la mémoire et les mondes de rêves similaire imprègne plusieurs des films de collages aux multiples couches de Lewis Klahr. À l’aide d’un vaste choix d’imagerie (p. ex. des publicités dans des magazines, des films maison, des feuilles de coordonnées, de la pornographie, des bandes-dessinées) et de sons, les personnages de Klahr se glissent au travers de moments déconnectés et d’espaces rêvant d’une connexion, un toucher, une voix, et ultimement, un sens de soi qui, comme un rêve, semble toujours être hors de portée, même lorsque droit devant eux. Pour cette projection rare de 16 mm, Lewis Klahr a personnellement regroupé une sélection de courts métrages provenant de son vaste et impressionnant portfolio.

VR The happiest moments of my childhood were spent at my grandparents’ home. My metal cabinets of memories contain many folders of the sights, sounds, and smells of those days. They sometimes feel so real, so close, so clear. Yet, they aren’t and I’m not sure they ever really were. Maybe they’re from snippets of home movies or slide shows; perhaps overheard recollections from other family members. How much of what I think I desire was real to begin with? Memory and nostalgia are deceptive bastard siblings of fiction. They entice you to crave something you can’t every quite reach and might never have had to begin with. A similar ruptured intersection between reality, consumerism, memory, and dreamscape seeps through many of the multi-layered collage films of Lewis Klahr. Utilizing an assortment of found imagery (e.g. magazine ads, home movies, contact sheets, porn, comic books) and sounds, Klahr’s characters drift through disconnected times and spaces craving a connection, a touch, a voice and ultimately a sense of self that, like a dream, always seems to be just out of reach even when its right there in front of them. For this rare 16mm screening, Lewis Klahr has personally culled together a selection of his short films from his vast and impressive body of work.

Birds fly, spiders dance, bees buzz, bats pester, snakes slither, and strange orbs hatch winged creatures that roam nightmarish dreamscapes as Lillian Gish, Mary Pickford, and Janet Gaynor watch in horror, perplexity, and yet with hope too. Using imagery from silent films, Eadweard Muybridge, along with thousands of handmade collages, Stacey Steers creates a mesmerizing allegorical trilogy (Phantom Canyon, Night Hunter, and Edge of Alchemy). She excavates the turbulent mental and emotional inner landscapes of women thrust into roles and selves they didn’t choose. Restless and unsettled, they battle demons of doubt, and creatures of anxiety and hesitancy in search of some semblance of self, being and happiness. Stacey Steers will be in attendance during OIAF 18.

Using an arsenal of materials (drawings, cutouts, fruit), imagery (abstract and figurative) and sounds, Subotnick explores aspects of history and folklore, often unearthing the oddities (Lake), cruelties (Fight, Pig, Hairyman), and anxieties (Ballerina) of nature and humanity. All with a calm, playful and freewheeling tone that skitters, skulks and slinks between the misty boundaries of comedy and tragedy. Subotnik, a member of the OIAF 18 jury, will be in attendance through the festival.

Il était une fois, pendant l’année deux mille deux, trois hommes ambitieux et exceptionnellement talentueux en unifier pour former le triumvirat qu’on connaissait aujourd’hui, Bent Image Lab. Le studio immédiatement a trouvé l’équilibre parfait entre l’imagination débridé, structure solide et l’expression créative dans un monde des courts métrages, vidéoclips, spots publicitaires et télévision avec les clients comme Honda, Saturday Night Live, Pee Wee’s Playhouse, At The Drive In, Radiohead et Gatorade, et c’est seulement le début. Organisé par le co-fondateur, Chel White, le bien établi réalisateur des films comme Copy Machine (Photocopy Cha Cha) et Dirt, Bent Image Lab: A Perfect Storm va aussi présenter les travaux des co-fondateurs David Daniels, l’inventeur de la technique incroyablement ingénieuse, «strata-cut», et Ray Di Carlo, un expert des effets spéciaux à qui on peut voir son travail dans The Abyss, I’m Not There, et Milk, entre autres. Once upon a time, in the year of our lord two thousand and two, three ambitious and uniquely qualified talents came together to form the triumvirate known today as Bent Image Lab. The studio immediately struck a special balance between unbridled imagination, solid structure and creative expression in the world of short films, music videos, commercial spots and television with clients like Honda, Saturday Night Live, Pee Wee’s Playhouse, At The Drive In, Radiohead and Gatorade, and that’s just to start. Curated by Bent co-founder, Chel White, the highly established short form director of such films as Choreography for the Copy Machine (Photocopy Cha Cha) and Dirt, Bent Image Lab: A Perfect Storm also features the work of co-founders David Daniels, inventor of the wild and stunningly ingenious ‘stratacut’ technique, and Ray Di Carlo, a special effects master whose work can be seen in The Abyss, I’m Not There, and Milk, among others. Along the way, Bent added directors such as OIAF repeat offender Rob Shaw, Solomon Burbridge, and Jun seo Hahm to the roster, whose films complete the puzzle that is Bent Image Lab in 2018. A tribute to contemporary filmmakers who work on the edge of cinema and beyond while the animation world was, and often still is, not accepting their work as animated films. Some artists (e.g. Geng Sue and her film, Mr. Sea) are mainly active in visual arts and hardly get shown at animation festivals. And of course, there are also some funny films like Jesse Schmal’s classic student film, Sub, which rarely get seen again after their festival run ends. When searching for films, most people look for the well-known names and titles. With this program I invite people to look beyond and find superb films they maybe never thought existed. Un hommage aux cinéastes contemporains qui travaillent aux limites du cinéma et les dépassent, alors que le monde de l’animation n’accepte pas toujours leurs œuvres en tant que films animés. Certains artistes (p. ex. Geng Sue et son film, Mr. Sea) sont principalement actifs dans le domaine des arts visuels et ne sont presque jamais présentés à des festivals d’animation. Puis, il y a aussi des films comiques, comme le film d’étudiant classique de Jesse Schmal, Sub, qui sont rarement vus à nouveau après que les tournées de festivals aient pris fin. Dans le choix d’un film, la plupart des gens cherchent des noms et des titres connus. La guerre en Yougoslavie a débuté par des de conflits ethniques provoqués par les Serbes, et a rapidement dégénéré en conflit le plus meurtrier de l’Europe depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il s’agit d’une affirmation risquée, mais le chef d’œuvre de Vlado Kristl, Don Kihot (1961), semble avoir prédit le conflit lorsqu’il suggéra que : « Quiconque n’est pas avec nous, est contre nous, et sera puni. » C’est ce qui s’est déroulé en Croatie, en Bosnie et au Kosovo. La montée du nationalisme extrême de chaque côté a causé la chute de la pensée critique, et plusieurs artistes se sont trouvés devant deux choix : aller sur la ligne avant, ou quitter le pays. La cruauté de la guerre présentée dans ce programme ne réside pas dans l’illustration du sang et de la destruction sur le champ de bataille, mais davantage dans la vision de l’absurdité du contrôle de l’esprit et la création de sociétés contrôlées par la guerre. Cette projection à propos explore aussi les différentes face à la destruction de la République socialiste fédérale de Yougoslavie. (Igor Prassel)

War in Yugoslavia started with ethnic confilcts provoked by the Serbs and soon escalated in Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II. It is a risky statement, but Vlado Kristl’s masterpiece Don Kihot (1961), seems to have predicated the conflict when it suggested that: ‘Who is not with us, is against us and will be punished.’ That is what unfolded in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo. The rise of extreme nationalism on each side caused the fall of critical thinking and many artists had two choices: go to the front line or leave the country. The cruelty of war presented in this program is not the depiction of blood and destruction at the battlefield, but more a view on the absurdity of mind control and the creation of war controlled societies. This timely screening also explores the varied reactions to the destruction of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. (Igor Prassel)

BEHIND-THE-SCENES: ISLE OF DOGS Puppet Supervisor, Andy Gent and Co-Production Designer, Paul Harrod will offer an in-depth discussion of the design and development of the characters and environments seen in Isle Of Dogs. They will show how Wes Anderson’s distinct artistic sensibilities informed every step of the process from design, through fabrication and ultimately shooting and performance. Drawings, animatics, maquettes and behind-the-scenes photos will provide a detailed background for a variety of clips from the final film. A Q&A will follow.

YO U The Animation Conference (TAC) is the OIAF’s industrydriven event, celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2018. An annual gathering of key players in the North American animation market, TAC runs alongside the first three days of the Festival and is geared at animation content creators and buyers. This business forum features panels, professional seminars, B2B meetings and intimate opportunities for networking. Wrapping up the event is the signature Art+Biz event, bringing together invited OIAF artists and the TAC audience for a networking brunch and special program to honour the two components of the Festival. TAC 2018 will be held September 26-28 at the Fairmont Château Laurier and requires TAC-specific pass for entry.

La TAC (The Animation Conference) est l’événement du OIAF mené par l’industrie, qui célèbre cette année son 15e anniversaire. Un regroupement annuel des principaux joueurs du marché nord-américain de l’animation, la TAC se tient lors des trois premiers jours du Festival, et a comme public cible les créateurs et acheteurs de contenu d’animation. Ce forum d’affaires offre des panels, des séminaires professionnels, des rencontres interentreprises et des occasions de réseautage. L’événement sera clôturé par l’événement signature Art+Biz, qui rassemblera les artistes du OIAF et le public de la TAC pour un brunch de réseautage et un programme spécial afin d’honorer les deux composantes du Festival. This exhibition, assembled specifically for OIAF, juxtaposes collages I created primarily in the 1990’s and the last twelve months. All my collages use imagery recognizable from my films, but only a few are actual transpositions of images that appeared in my films. The vast majority of my collages are created to be individual, stand alone works that re-contextualize and re-work images used in my films into new, original compositions. My deep, decades long attraction to and use of cutouts relates to their hieroglyphic essence-- their ability to evoke a kind of visual writing that like my films is associational in its accumulation and often involves a submerged, yet palpable, narrative. Since I turned 60 two years ago, 2-D collage making has become a more and more significant part of my artistic practice. (Lewis Klahr)

Cette exposition, assemblée expressément pour le OIAF, juxtapose des collages que j’ai créés surtout dans les années 90 et au cours des douze derniers mois. Tous mes collages utilisent des images que l’on peut reconnaître dans mes films, mais seuls quelques uns d’entre eux sont de véritables transpositions d’images apparues dans mes films. La vaste majorité de mes collages sont créés en tant qu’œuvres individuelles, uniques, qui remettent en contexte et retravaillent l’imagerie de mes films, pour en former de nouvelles compositions originales. Mon attraction profonde pour les découpes, qui s’étale sur des décennies, et mon emploi de celles-ci, s’explique par leur essence hiéroglyphique — leur capacité d’évoquer une sorte d’écriture visuelle qui, comme mes films, est associative par son accumulation et comprend souvent une narration submergée, mais à la fois palpable. Depuis que j’ai eu 60 ans il y a deux ans, la fabrication de collages 2D est devenue une partie de plus en plus importante de ma pratique artistique. (Lewis Klahr)

Not every piece of work is a Festival winner and rejection isn’t always bad. In our case, we want to celebrate it. Salon de Refusés is our celebration of the films that did not make it into the Festival programming. This is your chance to view those films and commiserate with the filmmakers. Come out to the Studio at Arts Court with a copy of your rejection letter and we will give you a free drink to wash that rejection taste away. Festival passes must be shown as ID at entry.

On the first floor, you can hang out at the bar, grab a table indoors or out and enjoy the music or mingle and dance. Upstairs, try your hand at animation with KXB Studio. If you are looking for a late-night snack, Pub 101 will be serving the classic Canadian dish, poutine! Finally, up on the third floor, everyone’s favourite; karaoke! Have fun till 2 in the morning…

Jump on a double decker bus to the legendary Animators’ Picnic at scenic Strathcona Park. There is a big tent to shelter you from the sun or rain. Enjoy complimentary food and drinks then try your hand at carving a pumpkin. There’s some swell Cartoon Network swag to be won. Our buses will begin shuttle service at the ByTowne Cinema after the 11 am screening (approx 12:15) and then from Arts Court at 12:30. It’s walkable for those who want to grab some air. This shuttle service will continue shuttling back and forth to Strathcona Park for the duration of the picnic. Please note that returning busses will only drop off at Arts Court (2 Daly Ave.) Presented By Présenté par

Nos autobus débuteront leur service de navette au Cinéma ByTowne après la projection de 23 h (vers minuit 15) et puis de la Cour des Arts à minuit 30. La distance le permettant, ceux qui voudront prendre de l’air frais pourront faire le trajet à pied. Le service de navette continuera ses allers-retours au parc Strathcona pendant la durée du pique-nique. Veuillez noter que les autobus de retour ne laisseront les passagers qu’à la Cour des Arts (2, avenue Daly).

Firestone Gallery Open 9pm to midnight Visit this significant Canadian art collection that spans the modern period (1890–1985). An interesting selection of the over 1,600 works is always on display. Showing the breadth of the collection, some of the most stunning key works are on display featuring artists from across the country, including Arthur Lismer, Lawren S. Harris, Emily Carr, Alfred Pellan, Rita Letendre, and Marian Scott.

Electrobite

Electrobite: Sarriugarteis (Olenoides) trilobite. This prehistoric steampunk fossil looks ominous with its luminescent eyes and the otherworldly glow emanating from its hard, metal exoskeleton. It moves with lightning speed under the command of its master and rider. But don’t be frightened, go say hello: it doesn’t bite! Electrobite is the creation of Jon Sarriugarte, Kyrsten Mate and their crew at Empire of Dirt, Oakland CA.

The Festival is free for high school students all day Saturday (9am to 6pm). Come and meet with animation schools and other industry professionals. Bring your high school ID to pick-up your pass on Saturday at ANIMATION EXPOSÉ in the National Arts Centre (NAC). If you are looking for the perfect animation school, don’t miss the Animation Career Fair taking place from 9am to 5pm at the National Arts Centre (NAC) where you can meet with the schools at their booths. Schools in attendance: Algonquin College, Sheridan College, Vancouver Film School. IT’S FREE!
