Taking place from September 20-24, 2017 at the ByTowne Cinema, Arts Court, National Gallery of Canada, Saint Brigid’s Centre for the Arts, and Chateau Laurier, the OIAF serves up a steady, healthy dose of screenings, new technologies, workshops, panels, parties, and the world famous animator’s picnic and pumpkin carving contest.

OIAF 2017 : PRIX ET RÉCOMPENSES DE LA COMPÉTITION OFFICIELLE La sélection oﬃcielle du Festival International d’Animation d’Ottawa se compose d’œuvres choisies par l’équipe de programmation, menée par Chris Robinson et Keltie Duncan

This year, the OIAF received a total of 1992 entries from 85 different countries. Of those, 105 short films and 5 feature films were chosen for competition. In addition, 45 panorama films were chosen to represent the efforts of the Canadian, International, and Student communities.

Cette année, l’OIAF a reçu au total 1992 inscriptions de ﬁlms, provenant de 85 pays. Parmi eux, 105 courts-métrages et 5 longs-métrages ont été sélectionnés en compétition. Par ailleurs, 45 ﬁlms ont été choisis hors-compétition pour mettre à l’honneur les projets canadiens, internationaux et étudiants.

The Oﬃcial Competition section of the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) consists of works selected by the Festival programming team led by Chris Robinson and Keltie Duncan.

During the Festival, three official juries sit with the audience to judge the short, feature and children’s competition screenings. The Short and Feature jury members are chosen from the international animation community. The Young Audience jury is comprised of Ottawa-area children. At its discretion, the International Jury may also award additional special prizes. The Jury has the right to withhold an award where no entry, in its view, meets the standards for recognition. On Saturday, September 23th at 7:30 pm, the Jury will announce the award-winning films during the OIAF’s Awards Ceremony at Saint Brigid’s Centre for Arts. A Best of Ottawa 2017 screening (a selection of the Festival’s award-winning films) will be screened on Sunday, September 24th at 7:00 pm and 9:15pm at the Bytowne Cinema.

Pendant le festival, trois jurys officiels, mêlés au grand public lors des séances, jugent les courts-métrages, longsmétrages et films pour enfants en compétition. Les membres des jurys des courts et longs-métrages sont choisis parmi la communauté internationale de l’animation. Les jurys des films jeune public sont, eux, des enfants sélectionnés dans la région d’Ottawa. S’ils le jugent opportun, les membres du jury international peuvent également décerner des prix spéciaux supplémentaires. Ils peuvent, enfin, refuser de décerner un prix, s’ils considèrent qu’aucun film sélectionné, ne répond aux critères d’évaluation. Le samedi 23 septembre, à 19h30, le jury annoncera les films primés lors de la cérémonie de remise des prix au Centre des arts St Brigid. La sélection des films primés sera projetée le dimanche 24 au cinéma Bytowne à 19h et 21h15.

Christophe gérard is a writer and director of live action and animation films including the multi-award winning short Child Dream (2015). He also designs and directs the scenography of hugely successful shows held in the Oberhausen Gasometer and at the Hayward Gallery, London including Eyes, Lies & Illusions, on the origin of the moving image. He is currently working on his first feature film, Par-Delà Les Plaines, and on the cinematographic adaptation of Epileptic, David B.’s graphic novel. Christophe teaches at University College London (United Kingdom).

Christophe Gérard est auteur et réalisateur de ﬁlms de prise de vue réelle et d’animation, dont l’œuvre plusieurs fois récompensée Child Dream (2015). Il conçoit et dirige également la scénographie de spectacles renommés, organisés au Gasometer d’Oberhausen et à la Hayward Gallery de Londres, notamment Eyes, Lies & Illusions, sur les origines de l’image en mouvement. Il travaille actuellement sur son premier long métrage, Par-Delà Les Plaines, et sur l’adaptation cinématographique d’Epileptic, le roman graphique de David B. Christophe enseigne par ailleurs à l’University College de Londres (Royaume-Uni).

Bob sabiston and his company Flat Black Films are best known for the interpolated rotoscoping technique used in the movies Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly. Bob has spent his career developing and using software for creating innovative animation. He is the director of many awardwinning animated short ﬁlms, starting with Beat Dedication (1987) and Grinning Evil Death (1991), both featured on MTV’s Liquid Television. His other shorts include Snack and Drink, Roadhead, Grasshopper, and God’s Little Monkey. In recent years Bob has developed several creative apps and videogames, most recently Butterﬂy: Inchworm Animation II for Nintendo 3DS.

amanda strong is an Indigenous (Michif) ﬁlmmaker, media artist and stop motion director currently based out of the unceded Coast Salish territory, also known as Vancouver. Amanda’s work explores ideas of blood memory and Indigenous ideology. Her background in photography, illustration and media extend into her detailed award-winning works. Her ﬁlms challenge conventional structures of storytelling in cinema and have screened internationally, most notably at Cannes, TIFF, VIFF, and Ottawa. Amanda is currently developing a graphic novel, an animated VR and two new short animations, Wheetago War and Biidaaban (The Dawn Comes).

Amanda Strong est une cinéaste autochtone (Michif), artiste médiatique et réalisatrice d’animation image par image, vivant actuellement sur l’ancien territoire de Coast Salish, aujourd’hui plus connu sous le nom de Vancouver. Le travail d’Amanda explore les idées de mémoire du sang et d’idéologie autochtone. Ses expériences en photographie, illustration et médias sont déployées dans certaines de ses œuvres primées. Ses ﬁlms déﬁent les structures narratives conventionnelles au cinéma et ont été programmés à travers le monde entier, notamment à Cannes, au TIFF, au VIFF et à Ottawa. Amanda développe actuellement un roman graphique, animé en Réalité Virtuelle et deux nouveaux courts métrages d’animation, Wheetago War et Biidaaban (The Dawn Comes).

Janice Nadeau a étudié la conception graphique à l’Université du Québec à Montréal et l’illustration à l’École supérieure des arts décoratifs de Strasbourg (France) avant de travailler comme directrice artistique pour diverses structures. Au ﬁl des années, elle a illustré bon nombre de livres et a été trois fois lauréate du Prix du Gouverneur général pour l’illustration, dont l’un pour Nul poisson où aller, qu’elle a ensuite adapté pour son premier ﬁlm d’animation, No Fish Where to Go, co-réalisé par Nicola Lemay. Mamie, qui marque ses débuts de réalisatrice indépendante, est une histoire personnelle et intime co-produite par l’ONF et Folimage.

Marta pajek was born in 1982 in Kielce/Poland. She graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in 2005, at the Faculty of Graphic, with an animated film diploma in the class of Jerzy Kucia. As part of an exchange programme she studied in Turku Arts Academy in the class of Priit Pärn. She works as a free-lance animator and animated film director, does video works for theatre and workshops for children. Her animated shorts include Sleepincord and Impossible Figures and Other Stories II, which is part of an animated film triptych.

priit tender is an Estonian animator – the director, designer and writer of many short animated films. He has made films in 2D, stop motion and various mixed techniques. His author films are driven by surreal imagery, black humor and bizarre folklore. Priit’s films have participated and won prizes and nominations from the most important short and animation film festivals all over the world.

Priit Tender est un animateur estonien - réalisateur, concepteur et auteur de nombreux courts métrages d’animation. Pour réaliser ses films, il utilise la 2D, l’animation image par image et d’autres techniques mixtes. Ses films d’auteur s’inspirent de figures surréalistes, d’humour noir et de folklore insolite. Les films de Priit ont été sélectionnés et ont remporté les prix et nominations des plus importants festivals de courts métrages et d’animation du monde entier.

Québec à Montréal and illustration at the École supérieure des arts décoratifs de Strasbourg (France) before working as an art director for various organizations. Torrey Pines (2016) is part phantasmagoric psychological thriller, part wide-eyed witness to our bizarre world, and part wild hallucination. This inventive stop-motion animated feature is the autobiographical story of transgender filmmaker Clyde Petersen, who invites us along for a cross-country road trip from sunny San Diego to upstate New York. I’ll Just Live in Bando est l’histoire d’un père opprimé, incapable de trouver un emploi stable à “Hell Chosun” (qui combine le concept de l’enfer et “Chosun”, le nom de la Corée à l’époque féodale). Jun-Koo est alors d’âge moyen, sans emploi et désespéré quand il reçoit miraculeusement deux oﬀres d’emploi : l’une pour devenir enseignant, l’autre, pour un rôle dans un feuilleton local. Jun-Koo a une décision à prendre, bien qu’incertain, hésitant entre ses propres aspirations et son devoir d’assurer un revenu stable à sa famille. I’ll Just Live in Bando aborde le problème majeur auquel font face les habitant de la Corée contemporaine (et tout comme d’autres endroits) - de suivre leurs rêves ou de trouver un emploi stable dans un marché du travail vicieux et compétitif. Canada’s ﬁrst woman animator, an under-recognised collaborator of McLaren for 21 years, who was a sterling animator in her own right. This compilation sets the record straight.”

For 36 years, the French animation studio, Folimage has been quietly skirting the boundaries between industry and art by creating some of the most beautiful and original short animation for all manner of audiences. Led by the creative impulses of Girerd (whose feature Raining Cats and Frogs won the Grand Prize for Best Feature Animation at OIAF 04), Folimage has also inspired the creation of a school (the acclaimed, La Poudriere), and developed a highly regarded residence program that has welcomed international animators to come to Folimage to create their own short ﬁlms. Among the many who’ve participated are such animation luminaries as Michael Dudok de Wit, Konstantin Bronzit and Regina Pessoa.

Depuis 36 ans, le studio d’animation Folimage taquine gentiment la frontière entre l’industrie et l’art et a créé quelquesuns des plus beaux et originaux courts-métrages d’animation tout public. Mené par la dynamique créatrice de son fondateur Jacques-Rémy Girerd (souvenons-nous de “La prophétie des grenouilles” qui a remporté le Grand Prix du meilleur long-métrage d’animation de l’OIAF en 2004), Folimage est, entre autres, à l’origine de la création de la fameuse école de la Poudrière, et a développé un programme de résidence de qualité, qui accueille des animateurs du monde entier pour créer leurs courts-métrages. On compte parmi ses nombreux participants, Michael Dudok de Wit, Konstantin Bronzit et Regina Pessoa.

Sabiston’s hybrid animation (e.g. Snack and Drink, Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly) creates a unique collision between reality and fantasy, revealing an anxious, absurd, and unreal world that is also the very real and wacky sensation of living.

Though by now many visual consumers are desensitized to the magic of a “drawing” that moves, there are still instances where a wild technique can whet our whimsy and remind us of the mechanics involved in creating our favourite optical illusion: animation. Where the Wild Things Move is a collection of short ﬁlms that challenge our notion of established techniques and tools through the use of odd and unusual mediums and methods.

It put the most intimate life of its author on display and invented an ever-changing idiosyncratic graphic language to do so. The challenges of adapting for cinema not only the deeply personal narrative, but also the way it is drawn and read, are substantial. They call for a refreshing approach to ﬁlm-making. Join ﬁlmmaker Christophe Gérard as he discusses bringing David B’s iconic graphic novel to the screen.

L’Ascension du haut mal - publiée en anglais sous le titre Epileptic - a révolutionné l’univers des bandes dessinées. Elle a exhibé la vie intime de son auteur et a inventé, pour ce faire, un langage graphique idiosyncratique en constante évolution. Les déﬁs de l’adaptation cinématographique, au niveau de la profondeur du récit personnel, mais aussi de la manière dont elle est dessinée et lue, sont importants. TAC (thE anIMatIon ConFErEnCE) The Animation Conference (TAC) is an intimate, 3-day networking and business forum featuring talks, one-onone meetings, screenings and networking events. It is aimed at animation content creators, writers, producers, broadcasters and distributors. The Art+Biz event, on the last day of TAC, gathers together invited artists and the TAC audience for a networking brunch and special program to honour the two components of the Festival. TAC’s unique position, running alongside the OIAF, gives its attendees access to some of the world’s best talent in animation. TAC 2017 will be held September 20-22 in Ottawa at The Fairmont Château Laurier and requires a TAC speciﬁc pass for entry.
