OIAF 2016 OFFICIAL COMPETITION PRIZES AND AWARDS The Official Competition section of the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) consists of works selected by the Festival programming team led by Chris Robinson and Keltie Duncan. This year, the OIAF received a total of 2311 entries from 86 different countries. Of those, 111 short films and 7 feature films were chosen for competition. In addition, 49 films were chosen for the out of competition World, Canadian and Student Panorama screenings. During the Festival, three official juries sit with the audience to judge the short, feature and children’s competition screenings. The Short and Feature jury members are chosen from the international animation community. The children’s jury is comprised of Ottawa-area children. At its discretion, the International Jury may also award additional special prizes. The Jury has the right to withhold an award where no entry, in its view, meets the standards for recognition. On Saturday, September 24th at 7:30 pm, the Jury will announce the award-winning films during the OIAF’s Awards Ceremony at Saint Brigid’s Centre for Arts. A Best of Ottawa 2016 screening (a selection of the Festival’s award-winning films) will be screened on Sunday, September 25th at 7:00 pm and 9:15pm at the Bytowne Cinema. THE OIAF AWARDS

OIAF 16 Honorary President/ Président d’honneur - OIAF 2016

Donald McWilliams – OIAF 16 Honorary President Président d’honneur - OIAF 2016

How does a documentary filmmaker become President of the Ottawa International ANIMATION Festival? In this interdisciplinary world of hybrid forms of media creation we’re living today, simply enough: Don McWilliams was a close confidant and acolyte of Norman McLaren for decades, and although his work is all documentary, Don’s lived his entire NFB life within the warm embrace of the Animation Studio. Highly informed by this NFB animation proximity, Don’s documentaries are imbued with animation sensibilities, from his eye for detail, to his understanding of frameby-frame and persistence of vision, to the fact that his films are first and foremost driven by artfulness, experimentation, and emotion, bolstered by ideas and content. Much the way animators create. That Don has chosen to live with animators instead of documentarians all of his professional life - effectively in exile - speaks to the artist in his soul. And it’s all the explanation needed for why he, of all people, is this year’s Ottawa International Animation Festival president. Michael Fukushima, executive producer, English Animation, National Film Board of Canada

Using innovative motion capture techniques, Jan Butheel’s animation embodies the detachment of its main character as he gradually loses faith in what he’s fighting for. Cafard is a unique look at the grisly events of war and their impact both on and off the battlefield.

With beautiful pastel imagery, acclaimed director Jean-Francois Laguionie (who won the Ottawa 78 Grand Prize for his short film, La traversée de l’Atlantique à la rame) weaves together the moving story of how being left behind forces us to confront the things and people we have left behind as well. Louise en Hiver is a poetic and heartwarming examination of the dangers of forgetting.

Director Chris Prynoski’s stylish animation recreates the garishness of the less than glamourous Hollywood we are not used to seeing onscreen. Featuring the amazing comedic voice work of Paul Rudd as John, and Patton Oswalt as Elliot, Nerdland is a scathing satirical take on the lengths that people will go to be famous, and the media which propels them to notoriety.

Directors Jean Francois Pouliot and Francois Brisson use vibrant 3d computer animation to create an idyllic and nostalgic wintry setting. But as events escalate, Snowtime! depicts a deeper message which the kids must learn—that war is not a game and often comes with casualties.

Over the past 40 years a lot has changed in the realm of animation. Technology has played a huge role in the now endless possibilities and mediums available to our most talented animators. And with innovation comes social, political, and artistic implications. The Ottawa International Animation Festival’s grand prize winners represent not only the changing face of animation, but the moments in history reflected through these works. We see characters deal with loss, violence, relationships, family, environmental concerns, and the dangers of power, desire, and substance abuse— while some of these shorts challenge us to find a meaning at all. Looking back at these incredibly interesting films there is a clear mixture of now classic pieces of animation and surprising, more provocative choices. They run the gamut of being both timeless and undeniably contemporary. From hand-drawn 2d animation, 3d computer-generated images, puppets, live action, or a mix of these different animation techniques, this diverse set of work truly embodies the cutting-edge identity of the festival. Whether controversial or heartwarming, beautiful or frightening, each of these films is whole-heartedly original. As part of the OIAF40 Anniversary celebrations we invited an all-star list of animation writers, academics, critics, and historians to write essays on each of the Grand Prize winning films. You can find those essays online at animationfestival. ca

1976 - The Street | Caroline Leaf | Canada | 10:12 1978 - La traversée de l’Atlantique à la rame | Jean-François Laguionie | France | 23:00 1980 - Ubu | Geoff Dunbar | UK | 20:00 1982 - Crac | Frederic Back | Canada | 15:00 The earliest winners of the OIAF Grand Prize take us on a journey from the painfully and joyfully ordinary, to the experimental and surreal. Caroline Leaf’s 1976 animated classic The Street, utilizes the innovative mixture of paint and glycerin to create a muddled and fluid effect, illustrating the confusion and banality of loss. Jean-Francois Laguionie’s La traversée de l’Atlantique à la rame takes us across the ocean, hiding the evils lurking underneath with his colourful figures and beautiful settings. Geoff Dunbar’s Ubu takes inspiration from a nineteenth century play to create an edgy and confrontational film, both thoroughly contemporary and avant-garde. Lastly, Frederic Back’s Crac! uses pencil and pastel to take us back to the past, celebrating the warmth of Quebecois pastoral life in contrast to current industrialization.

1984 - Chips | Jerzy Kucia | Poland | 9:00 1986 - The Frog, the Dog, and the Devil | Bob Stenhouse | New Zealand | 7:15 1988 - The Man Who Planted Trees | Frederic Back | Canada | 30:00 1990 - Hen, His Wife | Igor Kovalyov | USSR | 14:00 1992 - Two Sisters - Caroline Leaf | Canada | 10:20 These films continue OIAF’s signature mix of tradition and controversy within the animated medium. Each film utilizes a unique and expressive animation style representative of its specific narrative. Caroline Leaf makes her second appearance as grand prize winner with Two Sisters, beautifully etched directly on 70mm film. The Frog, the Dog, and the Devil uses a more classical animation style to depict a whiskey thief’s bad trip, while The Man Who Planted Trees truly embraces tradition in both style and story. These films are juxtaposed with the absurd and surreal stylings of Jerzy Kucia’s Chips and Igor Kovalyov’s famous Hen, His Wife. Whether it be troubled relationships, morality, or making the world a better place—each of these films reflects a distinctive artistic point of view.

The Wrong Trousers, Bird in the Window, et The Night of the Carrots sont tous aussi inventifs, spirituels et étranges.

The Wrong Trousers, Bird in the Window, and The Night of the Carrots are equally inventive, witty and bizarre. Nick Park uses impressive Claymation to bring the now famous characters of bumbling inventor, Wallace, and his canine better half, Gromit, to life. While Igor Kovalyov’s second grand prize winner still exhibits his signature style of large round characters and a gloomy colour palette, this film looks more internally at the strange central relationships, leaving us once again to solve the mystery of their interactions. And, finally, Priit Pärn’s film takes us even farther off of the deep end with an incredibly colourful story involving some voodoo-wielding rabbits and the would-be end of the world.

The Grand Prize winners from 2000 to 2006 cover an array of different themes. From the risks of disappointing your family in humourous (Dreams and Desires: Family Ties), uncomfortable (Igor Kovalyov’s third time on this list with Milch), or rather devastating (Home Road Movies) ways, to loss and stifled potential within the world of animation itself (Ryan), or the strange and complicated dangers of desire (Ring of Fire). Within this diverse set of films we also see a variety of techniques at work. Through a mix of black and white ink, computer, live action, and hand drawn animation, this set shows the innumerable techniques available to the modern artist to convey their personal visions and narratives onscreen.

2007 – Franz Kafka’s A Country Doctor | Koji Yamamura | Japan | 21:00 2008 - Chainsaw | Dennis Tupicoff | Australia | 25:00 2009 - Inherent Obligations | Rao Heidmets | Estonia | 10:00 2010 - The External World | David O’Reilly | Ireland | 17:00 In a world increasingly conscious of its own darkness, these grand prize winners combine light pop culture images with provocative messages—Inherent Obligations and The External World—or take prescient stories from the past to heighten this bleakness—A Country Doctor. Each of these films question what it is to be human in the twentieth century, what is the cost of human life, and how does violence structure these lives? Whether they are hand-drawn with ink, computer animated, or even use live action and puppets, these films may fool you into thinking they are a fun watch. But beneath these stylized images and bright colours, it quickly becomes clear that there are deeper themes lurking in between the frames.

The most recent Grand Prize winners favour a shorter structure and increasingly provocative visions. Small People with Hats and Moxie both juxtapose inoffensive, cartoon-like characters with existential crises and violence—heightened by simple evocative images. Junkyard, using a detailed and colourful style, and Hipopotamy, completely black and white, take a more serious approach to similar questions of life and death. Each film poetically considers the impact of violence not just upon ourselves, but also the people we have touched.

This is not necessarily a screening of my favorite films, although some are; but in sum it is a collection of films I admire and hope might provoke some thoughts on the nature of cinema and animation.” Donald McWilliams, OIAF 16 Honorary President

“When you become antique, you ask yourself questions, like “IS THERE TOO MUCH ART? do we need any more films, particularly ones made by me? If you say yes, then just what is film or animation? So with the help of Leaf, McLaren, Rybczynski, Anderson, Trnka, etc, here are some musings on that topic.

The Enchanted Village is the first animated feature ever made in Canada. The directors, brothers Réal and Marcel Racicot, worked six years in their evenings with four assistants to make this cell-animated fantasy. The film was released in December 1955 and played in Montréal, Québec City, Hull and Sherbrooke. Naïve and sometimes technically awkward, dealing with Catholic themes and folklore, offering some Hollywood-cartoon slapstick jokes, The Enchanted Village is a tour de force considering that it was made in very modest conditions.

The Enchanted Village was digitized and restored in 4k at Mels Laboratory in Montreal in 2016, by Elephant, the memory of Quebec cinema, under the supervision of Marie-José Raymond, Claude Fournier and Marco de Blois, for the Cinémathèque québécoise.

Arts Court Theatre

Set in the Abitibi Territory colony in the Province of Québec, The Enchanted Village follows a Catholic family who have recently settled in the area. With the other settlers they help build a village, then a church. Their only wish now is to find a bell for the church. Soon, they find a tiny but magical bell that enriches their lives… ...until a menacing figure appears in the village one day.

The OIAF is pleased to present the World Premiere of this specially restored version of this little-known Canadian animation landmark.

ONE-ON-ONE WITH GIANNALBERTO BENDAZZI

CA

Fresh off the heels of completing this ambitious project, Bendazzi (also an OIAF 16 jury member) sits down with the animation writer and OIAF Artistic Director Chris Robinson (The Animation Pimp, Unsung Heroes of Animation, Time out of Mind) to discuss the state of animation writing and criticism and just what kind of sweat went into producing such a massive and important work. Bendazzi will also be signing copies of his books after the talk.

A continuation of 1994’s groundbreaking Cartoons, Giannalberto Bendazzi’s three-volume Animation: A World History is the largest, deepest, most comprehensive text of its kind, based on the idea that animation is an art form that deserves its own place in scholarship. Bendazzi delves beyond just Disney, offering readers glimpses into the animation of Russia, Africa, Latin America, and other often-neglected areas and introducing over fifty previously undiscovered artists. HARMONY ANIMATION TECHNIQUES (STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONALS)

In this workshop, we will introduce you to the preferred workflows of senior animators using Harmony to efficiently create high quality animation. Attendees should ideally have some prior knowledge of basic animation techniques, as the focus will be on getting the most from Harmony when involved in actual production scenarios. Preregistration required (613) 232-8769

TAC (THE ANIMATION CONFERENCE) The Animation Conference (TAC) is an intimate, 3-day networking and business forum featuring talks, one-onone meetings, screenings and networking events. It is aimed at animation content creators, writers, producers, broadcasters and distributors. The Art+Biz event, on the last day of TAC, gathers together invited artists and the TAC audience for a networking brunch and special program to honour the two components of the Festival. TAC’s unique position, running alongside the OIAF, gives its attendees access to some of the world’s best talent in animation. TAC 2016 will be held September 21-23 in Ottawa at The Fairmont Château Laurier and requires a TAC specific pass for entry.

Exhibition: 40 Years of OIAF Posters Exposition : OIAF, 40 ans d’affiches We haven’t just shown groundbreaking art on the screens for 40 years, we’ve also commissioned some pretty spectacular poster artwork as well!. Not all of them have been popular, hell, not all of them have been pretty (No, we won’t name names. That’s for you to decide, quietly.), but the OIAF poster artist roster reads like an all-star line-up of animation, pop art talents and guys named Gary: Wendy Tilby (When the Day Breaks), Ishu Patel, Marv Newland (Bambi Meets Godzilla), Dave Cooper, Nick Cross (Over the Garden Wall), Andreas Hykade, Theodore Ushev, Gary Baseman, Run Wrake, Andrea Stokes, Gary Panter (Pee Wee’s Playhouse), Gary Leib, Koji Yamamura, Howie Tsui, Oscar Grillo, Jonas Odell, Caleb Wood (and the Hut Collective), David OReilly, Aaron Augenblick & Mati Kütt, Michael Zavacky and others. Throughout OIAF 16 you can see all 40 years of OIAF posters (and a few from SAFO, our old student animation festival) exhibited in one place for the first time ever. Posters will be available for purchase and some of the artists will be in attendance to sign them for you!

The archetypal hero takes a journey through seven stages: birth, childhood, mission, labyrinth, monster, battle and death/rebirth. Through purely abstract, moving images, the corresponding emotional states are conveyed: calm, love, joy, surprise, fear, anger/hate, and death/rebirth leading again to calm.

OIAF is chock-full of content – it’s easy to miss something! If there was a Competition or Panorama screening you had to skip, we have a small screening venue where programs can be viewed on-demand during the Festival. Please note – the screening room has limited space, and is run on a first-come-first-screened basis.

CLOSING NIGHT PARTY The grand finale! Held in the Arts Court Studio, it’s a casual affair, come as you are and let’s all get together for one last toast. You might not be happy that the festival has come to a close, but it’s not over yet – this is your last chance to celebrate another great year at the OIAF. Sadly, all good things must come to an end, let’s look forward to all meeting again in 2017 for another animation extravaganza.
