Welcome to the 24th Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF). From September 18-22, downtown Ottawa is the stage where you can enjoy the world’s most cutting-edge, thoughtful, funny and provocative animation films while mingling with many of animation’s most celebrated stars, studios and characters.

Bienvenue au 24e Festival international d’animation d’Ottawa (FIAO). Du 18 au 22 septembre, c’est dans le centre-ville d’Ottawa que vous pourrez profiter en avant-première les films d’animation les plus profonds, drôles et provocateurs en vous mêlant aux plus célèbres personnalités, studios et personnages de l’animation.

OIAF 2013 FESTIVAL GUIDE SCREENING TICKETS / BILLETS POUR LES REPRÉSENTATIONS • $12 Adults / $7 children under 12, seniors and members of the Canadian Film Institute (bring your card) (Discounts at the ByTowne and National Gallery for their members) • Tickets for the general public are available for purchase online or at the venues 30 minutes before showtime for all screenings. • Passholders have priority seating at all GALA screenings (jury and filmmakers in attendance). Animation Six-Pack ticket holders are given Passholder Priority. Seating is not guaranteed; based on a first-come, first-seated basis • Download our app for an on-the-go schedule & maps (Animationfest). •

COMPÉTITION OFFICIELLE

The Official Competition section of the Ottawa International Animation Festival consists of works chosen by the Festival’s Artistic Director, Chris Robinson with Tom McSorley, Keltie Duncan, Azarin Sohrabkhani (TV) and Jarvis Neall (High School).

La section compétition officielle du Festival international d’animation d’Ottawa se compose d’œuvres choisies par le directeur artistique du Festival, Chris Robinson, Tom McSorley, Keltie Duncan, Azarin Sohrobkhani (TV) et par Jarvis Neall (films de fin d’études).

This year, the Festival received 1,924 entries, selecting 108 finalists for competition. An additional 44 films will be shown out-of-competition in Showcase screenings. OIAF competition includes categories for narrative, experimental and student films, TV shows, commercials, school showreel and music videos. There is also a separate competition for films and TV shows made for children. Prizes will be awarded to category winners along with Grand Prizes for Independent Short Animation and Feature Animation. At its discretion, the International Jury may also award additional special prizes. The Jury has the right to withhold an award where no entry, in its view, meets the standards for recognition. On Saturday, September 21st at 7:00 pm, the Jury will announce the award-winning films.

Cette année, le Festival a reçu 1924 entrées, sélectionné 108 finalistes en compétition. 44 films de plus seront présentés hors-compétition lors de projections en Showcase. Les films en compétition du FIAO comprennent les catégories narratives, expérimentales, films d’étudiant, séries TV, publicités, démos d’écoles et clips musicaux. Une compétition bien distincte départagera les films et émissions de télévision pour enfants. Des prix seront décernés aux gagnants de chaque catégorie dont le Gand prix du court-métrage d’animation indépendant et celui du long-métrage. A sa convenance, le jury International sera susceptible de décerner des prix spéciaux supplémentaires. Il pourra aussi décider de ne pas remettre de prix pour une catégorie, s’il considère qu’aucun film en compétition ne remplit les critères requis. Samedi 21 septembre à 19h, le jury annoncera les films primés.

JURIES COMPETITION FEATURES Elliot Cowan was born in Australia where he directed thousands of television commercials for regional television. In 2006 he left for London where he worked with Uli Meyer animation and began animation the Boxhhead and Roundhead shorts. Cowan currently lives in New York. When he’s not animating, he’s bullying students into animating. Currently he’s directing the Boxhead and Roundhead feature. Elliot Cowan est né à Australie où il a réalisé des milliers de pubs pour la télé régionale. En 2006, il a quitté pour Londres, où il a surtout travaillé chez Uli Meyer Animation. À Londres, il a commencé à animer les courts-métrages Boxhead et Roundhead. Il vit maintenant à New York. Quand il ne fait pas d’animation, il persécute des étudiants pour qu’ils en fassent. Il réalise actuellement la série Boxhead and Roundhead. Fran Krause was born in Utica, New York. In 1999, while earning a masters at, he made the awardwinning Mister Smile. Collaborating with his brother Will, he made two pilots for Cartoon Network: Utica Cartoon (2001) and The Upstate Four (2007). He currently lives in Los Angeles, where he teaches at the California Institute of the Arts and is the director and show-runner for the animated series, Superfuckers. She turned her hand to animation with an adaptation of her book Stormy Night (2003) followed by the pinscreen animation film, Here and the Great Elsewhere (2012). Michèle Lemieux entrée dans le monde de l’illustration à la fin des années 1970. Elle a travaillé 5 ans en Allemagne avant de revenir à Montréal, où elle enseigne à l’école de design de l’UQAM depuis 1990. Ses livres d’enfants ont été traduits dans quelque 20 langues et se sont mérités de nombreux prix. Elle s’est mise à l’animation pour adapter son livre en court métrage (Nuit d’orage - 2003). En 2008, elle est retournée à la production cinématographique après avoir vu un écran d’épingles Alexeïeff-Parker à un atelier de l’ONF dirigé par Jacques Drouin, ce qui l’a menée à son deuxième film d’animation, Le grand ailleurs et le petit ici.

COMPETITION SHORTS Carolina López Caballero is the director of Animac Festival and Xcèntric, the CCCB cinema (Barcelona). After working as a free-lance animator in Barcelona, she moved to U.S. to work for MTV and later for Locomotion TV animation channel. Ged Haney was born in England in 1958. He first became involved with animation in the early eighties when he composed the soundtracks for a couple of animated shorts. Seven years later, he finished his first film, The Kings Of Siam. Since1996 he has worked extensively with Studio Filmbilder in Stuttgart. His most recent film is, Milk, Milk, Lemonade (2010). Megan Turnbull is a Winnipeg bred Montreal based artist, writer, and director. She has created paper worlds for her films Evolucity, Frolic, and the National Film Board stereoscopic 3D film Unlaced-Délacé. She orchestrates COmotion, a collaborative stop-motion project. Her work has been screened across Canada and internationally. L’artiste, écrivaine et réalisatrice Megan Turnbull a été élevée à Winnipeg, mais elle vit à Montréal. Elle a créé des mondes de papier pour ses films Evolucity et Frolic ainsi que pour le film stéréoscopique en 3D de l’Office national du film Unlaced-Délacé. They encounter a number of characters populating the post-Yugoslav indie cultural scene. As the journey continues through increasingly improbable surroundings, the protagonists begin to question themselves and the reality they find themselves in. Watching border controls turn into improvised snapshot sessions, admiring mutant iron-curtain Disney toys, buying souvenir grenade shell handicrafts and discovering sniper art in blown-out apartments, they find that truth may indeed be stranger than fiction. Pour promouvoir leur livre Bosnian Flat Dog, les dessinateurs de bande-dessinée suédois Max Andersson and Lars Sjunnesson ont parcouru les pays de l’ex-Yougoslavie avec une fausse momie réfrigérée de l’ancien dictateur Tito. Ils ont pu y rencontrer de nombreuses figures de la scène culturelle indépendante de l’ex-Yougoslavie. Alors que leur périple se poursuit dans un univers de plus en plus improbable, les protagonistes se questionnent sur eux-mêmes et sur la réalité dans laquelle ils se trouvent. Regarder des postes de frontières se transforme alors en séances de photos improvisées: Les jouets Disney mutants du rideau de fer, les souvenirs artisanaux à partir de coquilles de grenades, ou encore l’art des snipers dans les appartements en ruine, les amènent à constater que la vérité est en effet plus étrange que la fiction.

It’s Such A Beautiful Day is a compilation of three short films about the story of Bill: Everything Will Be Ok, I Am So Proud Of You and the same-titled It’s Such A Beautiful Day are re-edited into one complete story of life, death and beyond.

The hidden soul of Buenos Aires is revealed with humour, tango and emotion through the subtle eyes of Argentina’s most outstanding animators and graphic artists.

The imagination of Don Hertzfeldt could be considered an animation treasure; while visually simple, Bill’s experiences in the ups and downs of humanity are complex and thought provoking. Within Bill’s stick figure lies a loveable soul that will pull at your emotions in an unsuspecting way. It’s Such A Beautiful Day est une compilation de trois courts métrages sur l’histoire de Bill: Everything Will Be Ok, I Am So Proud Of You et le dernier éponyme It’s Such A Beautiful Day ont été réédités en une seule et même histoire sur la vie, la mort et l’au-delà. L’imagination de Don Hertzfeldt peut être considérée comme un petit bijou de l’animation. Tout en restant visuellement très épurées, Les péripéties de Bill, les meilleures comme les pires, sont complexes et provocantes. A l’intérieur de la silhouette filiforme de Bill se trouve une âme adorable, qui vous touchera d’une manière totalement inattendue.

This is a feature animation film made up of four episodes, reflecting each one a different profile, a unique place of this magical city, with the main role of tango, as music and as dance. 2D animation, collage and photomontage, stop motion, and stencils, are combined with an exquisite handling of humour, absurd and poetry, to create an extraordinary plastic and conceptually rich movie. L’âme cachée de Buenos Aires se révèle dans un film empreint d’humour, de tango et d’émotion, par l’interprétation subtile des artistes les plus remarquables de l’animation et de l’art graphique d’Argentine. C’est un long métrage composé de quatre épisodes, reflétant chacun une dimension à part entière, un lieu unique de cette ville enchanteresse, avec le tango comme élément central, comme musique et danse. De l’animation en 2D, image par image, du collage, du photomontage, des pochoirs ont été combinés avec un sens de l’humour irrésistible, de l’absurde, de la poésie, pour créer un film extraordinairement riche au niveau plastique et conceptuel.

The Christies and their cohorts return in the third and final chapter of Mr. Christie’s strange life. Pain and The Pity features the family and a few familiar faces involved in various antics this time set in Soho.

A mysterious fog settles over the city as a disoriented cosmonaut desperately attempts escape. He finds himself in a Groundhog Day scenario: a series of re-occurring events with the same individuals who, along with each situation, change in every encounter.

The bizarre Christie trilogy began with The Christies, followed by Goodbye Mr. Christie: both were awarded the Grand Prix prize at previous Ottawa festivals. Mulloy’s style is crude and simplistic, yet opens the field for the audience to use their imaginations in further completing the visuals.

Zoltán Sóstai’s futuristic tale glimmers with subtle inspiration from tech noir cinema such as The Black Hole and Blade Runner and boasts incredible digital effects that create the illusion of a live action adventure.

Les Christies et leurs acolytes sont de retour pour le troisième et dernier chapitre de l’étrange vie de M. Christie. The Pain and The Pity met en scène la famille au complet et d’autres personnages familiers dans de multiples pitreries, qui se déroulent cette fois à Soho. La trilogie loufoque de Christie a débuté avec The Christies, suivie par Goodbye Mr. Christie: les deux ont reçu le Grand Prix lors des éditions précédentes de notre festival. Le style de Mulloy, brut et simple, fait appel à l’imagination du public pour compléter davantage les visuels.

Alors qu’un mystérieux brouillard s’installe dans toute la ville, un cosmonaute désorienté tente de s’en échapper. Il se retrouve dans un scénario semblable à celui du Jour de la marmotte: une série d’évènements se reproduit en boucle, avec les mêmes individus, qui changent à chaque rencontre. Ce conte futuriste de Zoltán Sóstai se démarque en s’inspirant du cinéma de science-fiction noir comme Le Trou noir et Blade Runner et se fait fort d’effets spéciaux incroyables qui créent l’illusion d’un film d’aventure en prise de vue réelle.

A Liar’s Autobiography adapts the 1980 book of the same name released a year after Chapman’s death and utilizes newly discovered recordings of the late Python for an adventure that only he could lead. Dead parrots and silly walking aside, the Python gang travels through several forms of animation while recounting stories from Chapman’s childhood, rambunctious sexual endeavours, and Royal Family oddities. En prenant toujours le bon côté de la vie, Les Monty Pythons sont de retour avec un drame animé plein d’humour (on l’espère) retraçant la vie de leur regretté partenaire Graham Chapman. L’autobiographie d’un menteur est adaptée du livre éponyme de 1980, écrit un an après le décès de Chapman et utilise des enregistrements récemment découverts des Monty Python, pour créer une aventure que lui seul peut incarner. Allant du Sketch du perroquet aux bêtises loufoques, la troupe des Monty Python voyage à travers différents type d’animation en retraçant les histoires d’enfance de Chapman, ses expériences sexuelles houleuses et les curiosités de la famille royale.

His cozy life is shattered when his father leaves for the city, prompting Cuca to embark on a quest to re-unite his family. What the boy isn’t prepared for is a new world of industrialism and modern technology. Cuca’s lush, ripe homestead of fields and forests differ in tranquillity compared to the large, claustrophobic metropolis. Ale Abreu perfectly contrasts both worlds by usage of colour, noise, and perspective through the eyes of a curious yet determined child. Entrez dans l’univers fantaisiste d’un petit garçon nommé Cuca, fasciné par le monde paisible de la campagne. Sa petite vie douillette prend fin lorsque son père part pour la grande ville, embarquant avec lui Cuca dans une quête pour réunir sa famille. Mais le garçon ne s’était pas préparé, à ce nouveau monde industriel et centré sur la technologie. La tranquillité des forêts luxuriantes et des champs odorants de Cuca diffèrent en tout point de la grande métropole étouffante. Ale Abreu dépeint parfaitement le contraste entre ces deux mondes par l’usage de la couleur, du son, et de la perspective à travers les yeux de cet enfant curieux et déterminé.

Oscar-winning stop motion animator, Adam Elliot (Mary and Max, Harvie Krumpet, Uncle, Brother, Cousin) has produced a comic, emotional and contemplative body of work that challenges viewer’s perceptions of mental illness. In his self-described, “clayographies”, Elliot’s misfit protagonists are not judged. Instead, through Elliot’s objective eyes we see them merely as different, not better, not worse, just different. These ‘misfits’ can frustrate, scare and confuse, but they can also display a humility, creativity, imagination and compassion that make Elliot’s films stand out, earning them countless awards including OIAF’s Grand Prize for Best Animated Picture for Mary and Max in 2009. Adam Elliot will be in attendance.

Chris Sullivan is animation’s dark poet. His films (e.g. Master of Ceremonies, Landscape of Icarus, Consuming Spirits) show us the world as it is, not how we imagine it to be. One that is neither heroic or beautiful, nor exceptionally ugly or evil. This is not your typical animation world of animals, dick jokes, or abstract non-figurative symbolic blah blah blahs about wallowing artists. Sullivan’s working class characters struggle daily against poverty, abuse, death, madness, want and despair. But Sullivan is no preacher or social activist. His blunt, bare and unpretentious films aim, not to shock, but to engage us, to simply show us a world that most of us deny living in. Sullivan will be in attendance.

L’animateur d’images par images oscarisé, Adam Elliot (Mary and Max, Harvie Krumpet, Uncle, Brother, Cousin) est l’auteur d’œuvres comiques, émouvantes et contemplatives qui invitent le spectateur à modifier sa perception des maladies mentales. Dans ses œuvres qu’il qualifie de « clayographies », les personnages hors-normes d’Elliot ne sont soumis à aucun jugement. A l’inverse, la vision objective d’Elliot nous propose de les considérer d’une autre manière, ni meilleurs, ni pires, simplement différents. Ces « marginaux » peuvent nous frustrer, nous effrayer ou nous étonner, mais ils révèlent également de l’humilité, de la créativité, de l’imagination, de la compassion et permettent aux films d’Elliot de se démarquer. Il a remporté d’innombrables récompenses, dont le Grand Prix du Long métrage d’animation d’Ottawa pour Mary et Max en 2009. Adam Elliot sera présent à cette occasion.

Chris Sullivan est le poète noir de l’animation. Ses films (c.f. Master of Ceremonies et Landscape of Icarus ainsi que le long-métrage, Consuming Spirits loué par les critiques) nous montrent le monde tel qu’il est, et non pas tel que nous l’imaginons. Celui-ci n’est ni fantastique ni beau, ni même laid ou diabolique. Ce n’est pas ce monde animé typique composé d’animaux, de blagues vulgaires ou encore de blablas abstraits et métaphoriques d’artistes complaisants. Les personnages de la classe ouvrière de Sullivan se battent jour après jour contre la pauvreté, la violence, la mort, la folie, le désir et le désespoir. Mais Sullivan n’est pas pour autant un prêcheur ou un activiste. Ses films bruts, directs et sans prétention, ne cherchent pas à choquer mais plutôt à inciter le spectateur à s’engager en dépeignant un monde que la plupart d’entre nous renions. Chris Sullivan sera présent à cette occasion.

He found it only natural to move on to animation in 1971 with It’s Good in Heaven. Particularly in the first half of the film career, Van Dijk was a committed filmmaker who, in the tradition of the 1960s, exposed social abuses. Using several different techniques throughout his career including the image-by-mage technique, he considered his works moving paintings. In May 2012, he was told he was terminally ill and his days were numbered. Even in this short period, he took as much from life as he could. He made a single drawing every day during his final months, which led to the short animation film Last Picture Show. He passed away in December 2012. Considéré comme l’un des grands pionniers de l’animation néerlandaise, Gerrit van Dijk a entamé sa carrière après avoir suivi une solide formation de peinture aux beaux-arts. Il se tourne naturellement vers l’animation en 1971 avec It’s Good in Heaven. Durant la première moitié de sa carrière cinématographique, Van Dijk se positionne, dans la mouvance des années 1960, comme un réalisateur engagé en abordant les questions de société et ses travers. Tout au long de sa carrière, il utilise différentes techniques dont celle de l’image par image, il qualifie son travail de « tableaux animés ». En mai 2012, diagnostiqué en phase terminale d’une maladie incurable ses jours sont comptés. Mais même durant cette courte période, il profite au maximum de la vie en dessinant un dessin par jour, qui aboutira au court-métrage d’animation Last Picture Show. Il est décédé en décembre 2012.

It’s tough to think about contemporary animation from a national perspective without falling into clichés… What’s more “Spanish”, the candy world of American Wreck-it Ralph inspired by Gaudi’s architecture, or Spanish Oscar nominee Chico and Rita with all Cuban references and the beautiful drawings of Javier Mariscal? The films presented in this screening dig beyond the clichés and represent a personal approach to animation, singular and true to each of the artists. Malgré la crise et le climat, l’Espagne est le berceau de belles œuvres. Heureusement les talentueux artistes indépendants de ce pays qui ne bénéficie que d’un léger soutien des institutions pour la production d’animation, les outils numériques d’image par image sont désormais entre les mains d’auteurs provenant d’autres champs artistiques. C’est toujours difficile de penser à l’histoire de l’animation contemporaine d’un pays sans tomber dans les clichés…Qu’est-ce qui est plus « espagnol » que l’univers coloré du film américain Les Mondes de Ralph, directement inspiré de l’architecture de Gaudi, ou que le nominé aux Oscars Chico et Rita, rempli de références cubaines et les magnifiques esquisses de Javier Mariscal ? Indigenous self-expression pushes back against this long-standing colonial gaze by dispelling misrepresentations while contributing to Indigenous empowerment and self-determination. Indigenous animators, within the nation state of Canada, are creating works that are groundbreaking in content, form and methodology. The OIAF is excited to celebrate the diverse talents of Indigenous animators by presenting a selection of shorts made by both emerging and established First Nations, Métis and Inuit artists. Du Little Hiawatha de Warner Bros (dans sa version d’avant– guerre), au Pocahontas de Disney (1995): les représentations des peuples autochtones à travers les cartoons et les films d’animation grand public se sont largement basées sur des clichés racistes enracinés dans les esprits des spectateurs comme le bon sauvage, la squaw ou la princesse indienne. Mais les moyens d’expression individuels autochtones repoussent la vision coloniale archaïque en gommant ces représentations déformées et en contribuant à l’habilitation et à l’autonomie des Indigènes. Les animateurs aborigènes du territoire canadien sont à l’origine de projets avantgardistes tant au niveau du contenu, que de la forme ou de la méthodologie utilisée. Le FIAO est impatient de célébrer la diversité de talents de ces auteurs en présentant une sélection de courtsmétrages réalisés par des artistes amérindiens, métisses et Inuits, émergents et reconnus.

This program of some of the most promising of student works from the archives reminds us that our student films can be our most liberating expressions, and can be harbingers of greatness to come. And they’ll remind others of where some of the best ideas and talents have always come from; the gloriously fecund creativity of young artists. Since then he’s been creating short films, first with Alias Inc. (now Autodesk), then with the National Film Board of Canada. His film Ryan (2004) received the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, Grand Prize at OIAF (for Best Independent Short Animation), and 60 other international awards. His latest film, Subconscious Password, received the Annecy Cristal for Best Short Film from the 2013 Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

Sito will explain how computer graphics has changed the way we experience media today. It is the difference between Steamboat Willie and Buzz Lightyear, between ping pong and PONG. Tom Sito—himself an animator, describes the evolution of Computer Graphics. His story features a memorable cast of characters—math nerds, avant-garde artists, cold warriors, hippies, video gamers: disparate types united by a common vision. Computer animation did not begin just with Pixar; Sito shows us how fifty years of work by this motley crew made movies like Toy Story and Avatar possible. Saturday, September 21, 10:15am (Saint Brigid’s) samedi 21 septembre, 10h15 (Saint Brigid’s) The Blue Umbrella director Saschka Unseld will talk about where ideas come from, what is at the core of the stories we tell, and how a story will and should change during production. Unseld will discuss where his initial idea for The Blue Umbrella came from and how he tried to shape this idea into a story by finding out what the story meant to him on a personal and emotional level. He will give the exact story pitch that he gave to Pixar then show excerpts of the different stages of production: story reel, layout and animation. He will explain where and why story changes were made and how he made these changes without losing the core of his initial idea. In the last part he will focus on how knowing the emotional core of his story helped to drive and push the artistry in all the technical aspects and departments of his film. By using The Blue Umbrella as an example, Unseld hopes to impart lessons that will apply to all filmmakers striving to tell emotionally driven stories. Le réalisateur de The Blue Umbrella, Saschka Unseld, parlera de l’origine des idées, de ce qui alimente les histoires, et de la manière dont une histoire change au cours de sa production. Unseld nous dévoilera d’où lui est venue l’idée de the Blue Umbrella et comment il a essayé de la façonner pour en faire une histoire qui lui correspond tant sur le plan personnel et qu’émotionnel. Il nous présentera son projet de la même façon qu’il l’a fait devant Pixar puis montrera des extraits des différentes étapes de la production: la démo, les esquisses et l’animation. Il expliquera à quel niveau et pourquoi l’histoire a subi des changements et comment ils ont été mis en œuvre en conservant l’esprit d’origine. Enfin, il reviendra sur l’importance de maitriser le noyau émotionnel d’une histoire, et expliquera comment le sien a influencé le traitement technique et artistique de son film. Starting out with a character and logline, a development executive will put the creatives through the paces of aging it up, making it gender-neutral, adding a secondscreen component, scaling the animation back to fit a budget cut, etc. This is an exercise to give an idea of what happens in the real world to the concepts that come in the door. Moderated by Dave Skwarczek, President and Creative Director at Eat Your Lunch, an LA based broadcast and digital media studio. In Moving Innovation, Tom Sito—himself an animator and industry insider for more than thirty years—describes the evolution of CG. The history of traditional cinema technology is a fairly straight path from Lumière to MGM. His story features a memorable cast of characters—math nerds, avant-garde artists, cold warriors, hippies, video game enthusiasts, and studio executives: disparate types united by a common vision. The range of visions and techniques provide endless inspiration and allow a rare insight into the scope of the animator’s art. On Saturday, September 21, thousands of people will attend Ottawa’s second annual Nuit Blanche, to witness a city pulsing with color and creativity. Art and cultural venues will remain open late in to the night as art lovers of all ages, residents and tourists alike, walk through the warm fall night to experience innovative and provocative works by artists from Ottawa and beyond. The OIAF’s contribution to Nuit Blanche is Hello Amiga by the Toronto Animated Image Society (TAIS). TAIS commissioned six Canadian artists to create animations by exploring Amiga computers. These machines were popularized for graphics and image generation in the 1980s and early 1990s. The artists have created captivating works that promote necessary critical discourse around animation, ponder the history of recent technologies and embrace new manipulations of old processes.

The 2013 edition has a host Daytime Emmy Award winning writer Ben Joseph who will go behind the scenes and discuss his writing process for animated tv shows! Ben has written over two hundred animation scripts including: Stickin’ Around, Rolie Polie Olie, The Berenstain Bears, The Save-Ums, Totally Spies!, Franny’s Feet, George Shrinks, Marvin the Tap Dancing Horse, Gerald McBoing Boing, and many, many more. Workshops take place between 9:30am and 1:30am. The public premier of McLaren’s Workshop App, the National Film Board of Canada’s free and innovative iPad app that lets users create their own films, exploring three animation techniques made famous by animation pioneer Norman McLaren. The NFB educators will introduce the app and showcase different animation techniques including ‘drawing on film’ on the iPad, found object stop-motion animation, puppet animation and flipbooks at the National Gallery of Canada. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with these easy techniques, inspiring them to create animation at home, at school and with their friends!
