WARNING SIGNS YOUR PATIENTS CHILD MAY HAVE ADHD
All children can exhibit inattention or become fidgety or be impulsive from time to time. This can make it difficult to tell when a child’s behaviour is within the normal range or if they have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Children with ADHD show specific signs of the three major ADHD symptoms: hyperactivity, impulsiveness and inattention. Boys are more than twice as likely as girls to receive a diagnosis of ADHD, this could possibly be because hyperactive behaviours can be observed easier and is seen more frequently in boys.
THE SIGNS OF INATTENTION
The following behaviours occur frequenlty:
• Fails to give close attention to details or make careless mitakes
• Has trouble holding attention on tasks or play activities
• Does not seem to listern when spoken to directly • Does not follow through on instructions
• Has trouble organizing tasks and activities
• Avoid, dislikes or reluctant do tasks that require mental effort for long periods of time • Loses things necessary tasks and activities • Easily distracted • Forgetful in daily activities
THE SIGNS OF HYPERACTIVITY AND IMPULSIVITY
The following behaviours occur frequenlty:
• Fidgets with or taps hands or feet or squirms in seat • Leaves seat in situations when remaining seated is expected • Runs about or climbs in situations when it is not appropriate • Unable to play or take part in leisure activities quietly • On the go, acting as if driven by a motor • Talks excessively • Blurts out an answer before a question has been completed • Trouble waiting their turn • Interrupts or intrudes on others e.g. butts into conversations
