THE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION SOLUTION By Ingrid Garner A New Year’s resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to one or more personal goals, projects, or the reforming of a habit. This lifestyle change is generally interpreted as advantageous. Yep, we do it every year. We reflect on the year that is nearing its end and ponder on what we hope to accomplish in the new year. Our commitments, plans, habits, and lifestyle choices are scrutinized and rated to see how we measured up. In pondering resolutions, I recalled a book I read many years ago, called “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” by

Doing so also keeps you on track and taking the appropriate steps and actions. If some of your strategies aren’t working fine tune them or devise new ones. Likewise, figure out which obstacles and distractions are getting in your way and determine what you need to do to overcome them. We all know there will be setbacks and bumps in the road along the way to achieving our goals, but we need not let them hinder or take us off course. Revise and adjust the game plan where and when you need to. Staying focused and motivated is probably one of the hardest things to do when setting goals. It is common to periodically fall off the wagon; however, it is essential to get back on track as soon as possible.

THE BENEFITS OF SETTING GOALS • Gives you the “big picture” direction you want your life to take • Helps keep you organized and focused • Builds self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment • Helps you achieve success more efficiently and in less time • Makes the small day to day tasks more meaningful and purposeful Goal setting, and certainly effective goal setting, has been a tried and true method for achieving success and accomplishment in life. Without it we would drift aimlessly and waste valuable time and effort in pursuits that lead nowhere. So start now! Decide which goals are most meaningful to you and devise a plan for achieving them.

WHITE FOODS: TRUTH & MYTH By Tim Valderrama

Of course I’m talking about white flour, white sugar, and white pasta, the dreaded refined carbohydrate. We Americans are more health conscious and have decreased our fat intake over the past few decades; however, many have increased consumption of carbohydrates from breads, pasta, pizza dough, breakfast cereals, cookies and muffins which are a significant source of refined carbohydrates. If you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle, you’ll have to eliminate sugar and white flour from your diet.

How do you develop a healthy lifestyle program so you’re able to stick to the diet without feeling deprived of your favorite foods? You’d be surprised how few adjustments are necessary.

Instead have whole grain carbohydrates like whole wheat bread, pasta, or rice. Have foods sweetened with agave nectar, pure cane or unrefined molasses and avoid processed sugars. Nuts, beans, oils, dairy products without added sugar and meats, poultry, fish, shellfish and eggs are also allowed. Read ingredient labels. Sugar may appear under the hidden names of glucose, fructose, sucrose, honey, high fructose corn syrup, and fruit juice concentrates.

EFFECTS ON WEIGHT Eliminating foods with white flour, white sugar, and white pasta, or rice can help you create the calorie deficit you need in order to lose weight and boost your energy levels. You can only lose weight if you reduce your total calorie intake. However, you will not lose weight if you replace the calories from white flour, sugar, and pasta with calories from other sugars like brown sugar and honey, with other grains, or with high-fat foods.

NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS

CONSIDERATIONS Fortified refined grains, including white flour and pasta, are rich sources of thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, and iron. When you eliminate these foods from your diet be sure to include other sources of these essential nutrients to prevent deficiencies. Nutritious alternatives are dark leafy greens like spinach and collards, and lentils and dried beans.

EXERCISE Don’t underestimate the value of good exercise. Exercise with an Accountability Partner. Connect with a friend through Facebook’s “diet app” which allows you to invite select friends into your diet journal to view recorded foods, exercises and weight loss achievements. They can cheer you on and share their weight loss successes with you. It’s a private app, so don’t worry about your friend list being notified if you’ve lost weight or not. Even looking at pictures from a Better Homes and Gardens magazine circa 50s to the 70s make us yearn for days when everyone gathered in families to bake and spend quality time together. Where have those days gone? They have dissipated into the realm of vintage and that is why vintage is so desirable. Even for those of us who were not even alive at that time, the look, feel and touch of many of these objects seem like something from another time, another world.
